View Full Version : Allow Myself to Introduce...Myself: I'm The New Telltale Games Community Manager
Alan Johnson
08/18/2010, 12:09 pm
Hey everyone, I'm Alan Johnson and I am the new Telltale Games Community Manager. I've been keeping an eye on the boards for the past few days (I started Monday morning) but wanted to hold off on posting until I made my first official post on the blog; that is up now. In it, I describe a little about my background and how I got here. So without further ado, I'll re-post my blog here, but you can also head over to the actual blog link (Here (http://www.telltalegames.com/community/blogs/id-651)) to check it out.
So hi everyone! I can't wait to get to know you!
__________________________________________________ _______________
Let me start off by introducing myself - I’m Alan Johnson and I’m your new Community Manager here at Telltale Games.
I come to Telltale as a genuine fan of the company’s past releases (the entire run of Tales of Monkey Island (http://www.telltalegames.com/monkeyisland) being my favorite in the bunch); the finely crafted storytelling paired with the outright high quality of everything that gets released have made them irresistible to me. From downloading my first episode of Sam and Max (http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax) and laughing during every minute of it to playing through Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People (http://www.telltalegames.com/strongbad) as a longtime fan of Homestar Runner (http://www.homestarrunner.com/) and finding easter eggs around every corner, Telltale has never failed to deliver. Getting the opportunity to work alongside a team that has put together some of my favorite games is an absolute treat.
Outside of work, I do actually love video games, a lot. From fighting games, to shooters, to RTS, to whatever, I enjoy any and all genres. I come to you fresh from my time at 1UP.com (http://www.1up.com/) where I was Associate Editor of their game cheats and strategy guide site, MyCheats.com (http://mycheats.1up.com/). Just because I was based in cheats doesn’t mean I didn’t get my hands dirty with everything else under the 1UP sun; I was always busy writing a blog here, previewing a game there, or talking with the 1UP community on the weekly Game Night (http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3172883) video show. I also recorded the at1UP podcast (http://www.1up.com/1upblogs/11/the_at1up_podcast) every week with the very talented Mike Cruz, Jade Kraus, and Travis Williams, where we would nerd out about everything from answering the question of who would win in a fight between Hawkman (the DC Comics superhero) and Robo-Cop to our love for Transformers characters Rumble and Frenzy.
I join Telltale Games as we prepare to unleash two games that I am personally extremely excited for through a partnership with NBC Universal, Back to the Future and Jurassic Park (http://www.telltalegames.com/nbcuni). Both film franchises rank among my most favorites and I’ve already seen so much cool stuff related to both games that I can’t wait to share with you all. Trust me, you’re going to dig these games!
As well as nurturing our already wonderfully rich community and working to make our blog and boards the ‘end all be all’ for the latest on your favorite Telltale games past, present, and future, I look forward to really growing the community’s scope and getting the word out on how awesome Telltale’s games really are (as you already know) to the uninitiated masses. We’ve got some very cool stuff ahead, going into PAX and beyond, that will get you as stoked as it’s gotten me.
As your community manager I want to make myself as available as possible to all of you, to talk about Telltale, video games in general, comics, whatever. You can follow Telltale Games on Twitter as per usual at @telltalegames (http://twitter.com/telltalegames) , PM me at ‘ajohnson (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/member.php?u=59175)’ on the Telltale Forums, or comment in blogs (http://www.telltalegames.com/community/blogs) and the forums (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/) where I’ll respond to you directly. Stay tuned to our community blog or, of course, you can always get your up to the minute Telltale news through at these locations as well:
Facebook: The Official Telltale Games Page (http://www.facebook.com/telltalegames)
YouTube: Telltale Games’ Channel (http://www.youtube.com/telltalegames)
I look forward getting to know you all (as many of you as I can at least) and serving you, the mighty Telltale community, to the best of my ability!

Oooh, ok. Never seen these in English. Nevermind then.
Well, maybe I should introduce myself, too. I'm Avistew/Avi/Alice (Ah-LEES), I live in Canada but I'm French, and I knit stuff because it's fun, then try to find ways to get rid of what I've made, usually by sending it to innocents.
I correct people even when they were actually making references I missed.

Alan, in 80 words or less, how do you respond to the well-founded claim that Telltale Eats Babies?
Appropriate answers will consist of your favorite baby-baking recipe. Bonus points for low calorie options.

"Far as I know" is fine, but it's colloquial. It's the result of the first "as" being either omitted or unstressed to the point of omission in speech, so it isn't actually grammatically correct. Far as I know.

Interestingly, I think the Irish might side with the Americans on this and say "Legos", only because I first heard that from an Irish comedian (Jason Byrne, to be precise). Until now I just assumed that Brits said "Legos" as well, and Aussies were peculiar. Apparently I've managed to go 3 years in the UK without ever having a conversation about Lego.

FROM THE INTERWEBS: (http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/faq.html)
Which is correct as the plural of LEGO: 'Lego' or 'Legos'? Neither, actually. The word 'LEGO', when used as a noun, should only refer to the company that makes the product. Otherwise 'LEGO' is supposed to be used as an adjective. Thus, when referring to the pieces, neither 'lego' nor 'legos' is correct... rather one should say: 'LEGO bricks' or 'LEGO pieces' or whatever (using LEGO as an adjective -- and one should really capitalize all of the letters, and put the little 'circle-R' symbol after it (®)). This is all a matter of protecting the trademark of 'LEGO' for the company (using it otherwise degenerates the strength of the trademark). This is not to say that I use the word correctly 100% of the time... but that's the answer to the question (it's always fun/painful to read the near-flame-wars that start at slashdot.org over this topic... and generally, both sides are wrong).
[/interwebs]
That said, in America we generally say Legos.

It's a good thing you're so happy about it, because this is by no means an uncommon occurrence around here. But I'm sure you were warned about that.
One time, the Monkey Island fanart thread derailed so hard that Will had to split it off into a separate thread and move it to the General Chat board, and for months after that we had "Boobs: An artistic discussion" floating around. That was pretty awesome.

I remember now how you are supposed to say Lego blocks/bricks (and capitalise it, but obviously I'd rather type this parenthesis instead. Selective laziness). Same with Duplo. But I've always said "legos" and "duplos" (and playmobils).

No idea. I started collecting with the Toa Mata (summer 2001), and my last set was the Toa Hordika (summer 2005). I have all the canister sets and a few of the bigger sets from that period. I'd still like to pick up the rest of the Toa sets (the Inika from summer '06, the Mahri from summer '07, Phantoka/Mistika from '08, and maybe the Glatorian Legends from last year or the Bionicle Stars from this year), but I don't think I'd have room. As it is, I have a large tub and two boxes full of Bionicles sitting in the corner of my room (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3063http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=367353#post36735390#post306390) because I have nowhere to put them.
Okay, I lied. Since I went to Wikipedia to figure out which sets I still want, I know exactly what's out now. Bionicle Stars, which appears to be special edition re-releases of certain characters from old sets. Looks like Tahu from the Toa Mata, Gresh from Glatorian, a modified Takanuva from the Toa Nuva, Skrall from Glatorian, a new Piraka called Nektann, and a new yellow-colored Rahkshi. First canister set I've ever seen where all six models were totally different creatures.
