sam & max switches video settings on its own

hi, i've been having a problem now with both Sam & Max ep. 1 & 2 where the game will slow down drastically all of a sudden due to the game thinking it is in high quality video mode. I then have to go to the options, click, high, even tho its already on low, then back to low, to correct this. Happens pretty often and it gets annoying after a while cuz my compuer cant handle the higher quality settings well. How can i fix this? thanks

What kind of video card do you have?

Have you tried deleting the prefs.prop file out of the game data folder before launching the game?
