View Full Version : What do you think Telltale will do after BTTF and JP?

When Rise of the Pirate God was about to be released, I was thinking what's the next thing gonna be. I kinda sorta had the answer after finishing RotPG: New Sam & Max game in 2010. While waiting for The Devil's Playhouse I was thinking what's next in line. Later on the Universal deal was announced.

Now there haven't been any releases since the last S&M episode and we're waiting for Back to the Future and Poker Night to kick off. After that there will be Jurassic Park. So when all this is done and wrapped up, what's gonna be next?

More S&M seems inevitable, but I think they'll do something else first. I'd say Something at the Inventory is the best bet for now. Much as I like Puzzle Agent, I can't shake the feeling it didn't do as well as they had hoped.

Either puzzle agent or At The Inventory.

Something new would be cool, but we have like 4 different new things coming out this year.

Strong Bad would just delay the website more
Monkey Island will probably have to be done by LucasArts now
Sam and Max is too soon.
From what I've heard, Wallace and Gromit didn't do too good.

I'm hoping for another Universal property, The Dark Crystal. Though if it happens, it would likely time with the new movie that's due in 2011 (?).

Though the rights are likely tied up with a number of companies (Henson), perhaps Universal just had a distribution deal. And I have no idea if the new movie will also be out on Universal.

I expect a continuation of one of their proven properties, personally. I can see them doing Tales, Homestar, or maybe a continuation of Puzzle Agent if that's doing well. Wallace and Gromit seems to be out of the picture(sadly), and I doubt we'll see a Sam and Max Season Four before we see a continuation of something else without a second season.

I will not vote for now because the poll's idea has not been clear to me. Should we vote for what we hope that Telltale will make after those games, or for what we guess Telltale will make?
If it is the first one, I really hope they will work on the license for Bone. If it is the second one - probably another game at the Inventory.

but, as for new property, I would love another "Indiana Jones" adventure game.

Sam and Max is too soon.

Lets not forget that Sam & Max Season 1 ended in 2007, the same year season 2 started.

Even though we had to wait 2 years before The Devils Playhouse, I still think season 4 will come out in 2011-2012. Hopefully.:D

Realistically? This is how I see it.

More Monkey Island: LucasArts announced no more external development a while back, so this one's highly unlikely.

More Sam & Max: Probable. There was a gap of only several months between the end of Save the World and the beginning of Beyond Time and Space. Obviously there was a two-year gap between Beyond Time and Space and The Devil's Playhouse, but that's because that season had improved graphics and gameplay, which meant more development time. Now that they have The Devil's Playhouse to work off of, a Season 4 could be finished (comparatively) fast.

More Wallace & Gromit: Does Telltale even have the license anymore? Either way, I don't think it sold well enough to justify more.

More Strong Bad: The Chaps haven't updated their site in almost a year (I'm not counting the April Fool's joke since it wasn't a return to regular updates.) Why would they have the time for the even-more-intensive work of a second SBCG4AP? Just consider yourself lucky we're getting Poker Night at the Inventory.

New license for Bone: Forget it. Warner Bros. picked up the license for a reason. They're making a Bone movie, and they want to be able to make a Bone game to go with it. I guess you can hope that WB will hire Telltale to finish the Bone series (and maybe update the two that came out to look a little less dated), but realistically, that won't happen.

Puzzle Agent continued: You can tell Telltale really wants Puzzle Agent to be popular and grow into a series. They've been trying to push it as much as possible, to the point of giving it away for free for pre-ordering BttF. But sadly, I don't think enough people are interested to warrant more. (Which is a shame, since I loved it.)

Something Completely Different at the Inventory: This is completely dependent on how well Poker Night sells. If there is a sequel, I just hope it's something more interesting than poker. It seems if they're going to make "At the Inventory" into a series, the most important element would be The Inventory itself. Maybe we can see a point-and-click adventure starring the four of them. :D

But most likely, I think Telltale's next project after the two Universal games are done will be something brand new, not a sequel. Telltale's a small studio, but they're getting bigger and attracting more attention with each new game. Back to the Future's a very well-known license, and the news of a BttF game is causing tons of people who have never even heard of Telltale before to start talking about one of their projects. (Hopefully the game will convert these people into full-out fans once it comes out.) When Jurassic Park gets closer, we'll be seeing even more people. This much attention is enough that Telltale might be able to get their hands on an even larger license, or hell, maybe make something original. Whatever they do next, though, I'm looking forward to it.

More Monkey Island: LucasArts announced no more external development a while back, so this one's highly unlikely.
They've also said that they want to continue their existing profitable partnerships. I think it could go either way.

More Sam & Max: Probable. There was a gap of only several months between the end of Save the World and the beginning of Beyond Time and Space. Obviously there was a two-year gap between Beyond Time and Space and The Devil's Playhouse, but that's because that season had improved graphics and gameplay
This is simply wrong. Season Three of Sam and Max was tentatively scheduled for "early 2009" and then all word of it dropped off the face of the earth until Tales was announced and it was made clear that Sam and Max had been put on hold to release Tales.

(Also I'd hardly call "removing all the puzzles in the game" an improvement...)

I would say either Tales II or Puzzle Agent - those are the two most likely candidates. However, I'm hoping for a second Tales of MI more than a continuation of Puzzle Agent, which is why I voted for ToMI 2.

Also, in regards to RAnthonyMahan's comment, didn't we end up deciding that the whole 'no more external development for LucasArts' wouldn't actually affect the chances of a future Monkey Island game all that much (after much discussion (https://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18819))?

If LucasArts doesn't do something amazingly stupid (I.e. make Monkey Island 6 themselves or not make it at all), I expect Monkey Island 6 next. If LucasArts decides to be stupid, I think we'll see more Puzzle Agent (It's too soon for another Sam & Max, I heard the original makers of Homestar don't have much time anymore nowadays, and I remember hearing Wallace & Gromit and Bone were not very succesful, financially speaking).

I think we have a 70% chance of returning to Sam and Max. We're getting 2 new license games now and then a return to something familiar. You can't let Sam and Max fans wait THAT long, lol.

I don't think we'll be seeing a new Strong Bad season. The franchise is too niche. As Telltale is getting more known and popular I think they'd like to stick to more popular license games.

So future for TellTale is: BttF and Jurassic Park and then Sam and Max S4 with the pilot programm continued.

WinterSnowblind
11/03/2010, 11:35 am
I'd say Monkey Island would be the most likely, especially considering how successful it was. But with LucasArts refusing to outsource development now, who knows what will happen with that. I did say after Tales was finished that I'd rather not see anymore MI for a while, the wait for Tales is partly what made it so amazing. And if Telltale aren't going to be able to make another, I'd rather not see it happen.

So other than that, I'd like to see them move onto other new properties. BTTF and Jurassic Park both sound amazing and I'd definitely be in favour of a Futurama game.

A Futurama game. Now that could definitely work!

Again I am really up for an X-Files game. It really has the qualities for a succesful episodic game from Telltale.

-The franchise has been too quiet for a long time. It could use a revival
-It has comical distinctive characters. The real actors are probably easy accesible for the voice acting.
-The series already had an episodic format.
-The series had a nice sense of dark humour. TellTale could really work with this.

It's also a great addition for TellTale's portfolio. It needs a good detective/horror/comedy game.

Now someone already pointed out to me that they have CSI.
But TellTale just acts as an out-sourced studio. The stories are already written. Telltale just transfers it into a game. Also, CSI is pretty generic. Misses drama, action and good characters.

I voted for TMI as most likely but I wouldn't be that exited if they did, hopefully they do an original property. Not sure about a new Sam and Max, there was something lacking in the last season and the episodes start to get repetitive.

Puzzle Agent/Grickle. Hopefully that gamble worked out for 'em, because it's so unique from the rest of their games. I'd love to see the series fully realized.

A Dexter game would be brilliant, because...

-Telltale's chance to make a proper big-boy game with serious storylines that interweave and have proper emotional gravitas

-The nature of Dexter's "work" would lend itself well to adventure games, tracking people down, finding clues, finding clever ways to enter into property

-Hints could be delivered seamlessly using Dexter's trademark inner monologue

I think it's great they're doing familiar licences.
Why? Because some company has to do it. And TellTale has been one of the most succesful so far of turning licenced franchises into games. This is a very rare feat to accomplish.

I don't want my hopes too far up. discworld doesn't carry itself very well to mediums like live-action, but the video games have always carried the world across really really well. A new Discworld game would make me go weak at the kness.

HOWEVER! It's not Discworld uless Sir Terry's 'mucking about' with everything just tightening nuts and bolts up. To correspond with a company on the other side of the world might be a pain in the arse for him, especially considering his condition

I'd say that'd be a bit too big-boy kinda concept for Telltale.

Maybe at the moment, it wouldn't exactly be the smoothest of transitions. Let's see what they give us with Jurassic Park. Their whole thing is that they're story tellers, and Dexter makes for a great tale

I voted Monkey Island but I do want more Puzzle Agent and Inventory games and a Sam and Max to follow.
Homestar Runner hasn't updated in a year except for one April Fool toon so I don't feel like a new season should be made until there's more content to work with.
Wallace and Gromit were brilliant games but feel a little too niche to make a second season anytime soon. I do think we need another animated short.

I know this probably won't ever happen, however, I can dream.

My dream is that TTG would re-invent Full Throttle into episodic storyline as it (Along with Sam & Max) were Lucasarts' crowning achievements in adventure games, as well as a highly underrated property.

It is a great story with lots of additional material to draw from (such as rival gangs, power struggles and character relationships). The original game set up a unique dark, gritty but often comedic (love those Corley Bunnies) game that just screams sequel potential.

Anyways, I cast my vote for a Full Throttle (not necessarily a remake) season as I guarantee us adventure game fans will love it.

Billy & Mandy could really work, I think. It'd probably be sorta like Sam & Max, I guess, but different. Interacting with the Jamaican Grim Reaper... that'd be cool/funny.

And imagine exploring the world of Ferris Bueller, though, tricking snooty waiters and interacting with shady parking attendants, exploring art gallery's and parades...

I voted more Sam & Max, though, 'cause my ideas are likely not possible/likely :p

Futurama, or Star Trek!

Paramount would never allow, it, but I can dream! :D

Well, if we go into "how could they make this work", how about... Sonic?

Or, more seriously, I'd love to see the Planetfall 3 sequel actually made. Or the rest of the Magic Trilogy - only getting Z:GI was a bum.

Maybe a collaboration with Dreamworks or Disney/Pixar?

I just had another wonderful idea... Seinfeld: the adventure game about nothing! :D You try to get out of work as George, come up with strange new business ventures for Kramerica Industries as Kramer, etc... It'd probably be pretty expensive to get permission and the original cast back, though. Not to mention the story would be kinda... uh... nothing...

Also, a more plausable idea, Back to the Future: the Game: Season 2!! If the first game does well, of course.

Predator.... or Alien..... or Driving Miss Daisy the point and click adventure game.... only with Winslow as the driver... admit it.... you would play that game.

More Monkey Island - I want this the most. I think Telltale really wants to do it too, given what they've said before, but it's all up to LucasArts.

More Sam & Max - I think it's bound to happen in some form. Sam & Max is to Telltale as Toy Story is to Pixar, it's their flagship series and they own the rights to it.

More Wallace & Gromit - Eeehhhh...maybe. There are better ways to use Telltale's talent, I think, though I did enjoy the first three episodes a lot.

More Strong Bad - I don't think this is too out of the question, given that SB featured in Poker Night, and SB is getting released on PSN/Mac and iPad. However, it was my least favourite Telltale series, so maybe just stick to using him in "At the Inventory?".

More Bone - Not happening. It's been years, and the license is in new hands now.

More Puzzle Agent - It's likely, given all the promotion it's gotten (I have like four copies of the game now :P ) However, I didn't LOVE Puzzle Agent, and I'd be kindof annoyed if they did a full season of PA rather than a new Monkey Island or something.

More "At the Inventory" - I think Telltale have got something in mind, given those audio samples, this seems likely to me.

So in conclusion, I'd like a new Monkey Island season the most, and I'm sure Telltale would love to do it too, but in terms of how likely any of these are to happen, they'll probably develop one of their pilot programmes further.

You, sir, are genius! How I'd LOVE to see someone pull that off. A game about nothing would be really challenging to make but if done just the right way would be awesomeness.

Personally, I'm hoping for a new Strong Bad season. Don't get me wrong, I'd jump for joy if they announced a new Puzzle Agent, or Monkey Island, or whatnot, but SBCG4AP was what introduced me to Telltale. I've got a soft spot for the game.

I know it's a property of Disney now but :

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

It would make for a very fun adventure game. By the same author and in the same style, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency could work well as an adventure game as well.

They should totally do that. It could definately work because they had that text adventure game...

If they do make a game, I think, I'd like to see the characters look more like they do in the movie than they do in the TV series.

I haven't read Dirk Gently, yet. I probably should, sometime.

If you don't have much time to read, I'd suggest getting the audiobook. It's a very nice story as well as the sequel (The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul).

Or alternatively, the BBC started a Dirk Gently tv series, but I haven't had the chance to see it yet.

"The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul" I've heard of that one. I love the way the name sounds funny, yet sad and dramatic at the same time. Maybe I'll read them this summer. I read all the Hitchhiker's Guide books last summer. If they're by the same author, I'll probably like these ones, too.

Nobody seems to have mentioned it, possibly because nobody's played it yet, but on blind faith alone, I sure wouldn't mind if they got started on "Back to the Future: The Game Part II" right away... :)

Most likely, however, I think would be "Murder at the Inventory", followed by another Sam and Max game, and perhaps even a Penny Arcade game.

In the opening sequence of Back to the Future : The Game when Marty wakes up there is a movie poster for Weird Science on his wall, with the characters in the same cartoon/3D model as the BTTF game.

I hope this is a nice little easter egg and a teaser for a Weird Science game, would be awesome!

Oh i'd like to see that too.
Anyway, it may sound a little too much "fanboy", but i think Telltale can handle ANY good license. They have awesome writers in the staff, and they know what's Video Game is really about.
I can't wait to see how far they will go.

Well, this would be (of course) eb thinking once BTTF and JP are done, Telltale could do....

From franchises TTG have already touched once:
-Tales of Monkey Island: Season 2
-Puzzle agent
-Sam & Max Season 4
-More of the "At the Inventory" series

Things they could do from other franchises:
-Futurama (Whotever thought of this is win. A futurama point and clikc could work in so many levels)
-Animaniacs (I keep saying it's a good idea! why nobody besides me thinks so? D:)
-Day of the Tentacle/ Maniac Mansion
-Indiana Jones
-Darkwing Duck

PainDealer

-Tales of Monkey Island: Season 2

Can't use same name twice in MI series. That would have to be "Something Else of Monkey Island"

Animaniacs would be a killer!

Tales started in 2009; I think the final months of 2011 to the early half of 2012 is a big enough gap between entries for Telltales most successful series thus far. I'd be very surprised if the next non-pilot game after Jurassic Park wasn't Monkey Island.

Edit: *Sigh* not the case :(

Telltale will bust out a Street Sharks adventure game that will blow everyone away. Then Street Sharks will be remade into a new TV series that sucks.

After the extremely successful Street Sharks adventure game, Telltale will unleash Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: the Adventure Game. Again, people will be blown away, and Telltale will be deemed "Earth Gods"

Battle Toads will be resurrected in the distant future. The current technology that Telltale uses to create adventure games just cannot handle the pure awesomeness that is Battle Toads.
