View Full Version : Why "The Heavy"
I'm just curious as to why Telltale chose specifically the Heavy Weapons Guy out of the entire cast of Team Fortress 2. Don't get me wrong I love the Heavy beingit here, I'm just curious as to how Telltale narrowed down their choice specifically to the Heavy.

Pretty much what he said. He features prominently in a lot of TF2 media, so he basically kinda-sorta is its main character in some ways.

No that wouldn't be the case, Valve has a laissez-faire approach to machinima.

Yeah, but Telltale could know how popular Heavy is because of "Moments with Heavy" and asked for the rights for him. Valve's approach to machinima doesn't really have any bearing on which of their characters Telltale wants to use in their game.

Well he is the funniest of the whole bunch.
I would have loved to see the medic instead but the Heavy is okay.

Kinda-sorta yes, but it's still interesting, for example What if everybody at telltale preferred say... The Scout? Would that have effected their choice? Also, the Heavy seems like an odd (though interesting) choice for a poker game, where-as most companies would have chosen a much more cunning character like the Spy for this role, Telltale chose to stick with the big gallute.

The most logical choice other than the Heavy would be the Scout, but the problem with the Scout is he cannot shut up, so he'd probably get old pretty fast. Engineer and Spy's personalities are more subtle than the Heavy's, whereas this game -- since the selling point is really the dialogue -- works best with outrageous personalities. Pyro wouldn't work 'cause you can't understand him. That leaves Demoman, Medic, and Sniper. Medic would just seem a strange choice to me -- an important class, but likely not the first class people think of when they think of TF2. Demoman could work, and Sniper probably could too. But I think Heavy's just funnier. He has that deep but silly voice, he has the mildly broken English, and he's nutty in pretty funny ways ("What was that, sandvich?").
That's my take on it, anyway.

I want the Sniper!
Out of all the cast of tf2, the heavy seemed like he'd be the mist fun, personality-wise, to share a table with the other three. Strong bad and max are crazy live wires of their own trademark sorts, while the heavy is a definite "still waters run deep" type. We picked the four guys at the table pretty much at once, because of the matrix of ways each of them can bounce off each other, and the heavy fit in well.

Jake raises a good point. I mean, Max and Strong Bad are pretty over-the-top as it is. If you throw in someone similarly spontaneous, like the Scout...well, there is such a thing as too ridiculous. Heavy and Tycho, while still crazy, do it in a more subtle way.
That and, as mentioned before, Heavy is essentially the "face" of TF2.

Actually I think Soldier would be one of the best choices, come to think of it. I think the Heavy is overall more comical, though.

I hope he's cheating at it, or else he cannot win unless he's the banker. Or maybe you mean something other than casino Baccarat, but I imagine such games are rare.

The Spy would make this game too confusing. Not only would he have the perfect poker face, you wouldn't be able to believe anything about the game. You will defeat Strong Bad and it revealed that he is actually a spy, along with everyone else at the table, and even your full house is a spy. Then you are murdered by the one thing you thought wasn't a spy: the table.

Not only that, but the Spy would cloak, look at everyone's cards, then make his bets based on what he finds out.

I suggested at one point that every once in a while the Heavy should be replaced by the opposite team's Spy in a Heavy mask without any of the other players noticing.

Imo, the heavy is the perfect choice.
In my opinion, the worst choice would be the Pyro, the Sniper, and the Medic.
The Sniper would probably just get interrupted with calls from his parents about changing his line of work. The Pyro would only speak gibberish all the time; it would be funny for the first few times it happens, but I see it getting old fast; the characters he is talking to has to repeat what he says so that the audience can understand what the pyro is saying. The medic doesn't seem to be developed fully enough; I would wait till his Meet the Medic comes out since I would just see him spoutin out German

I think the Soldier would be a good choice but he would be too crazy and would be over-the-top like Max and Strongbad. I think Demoman would work well considering that he is a drunken, depressed scottsman who is insecure over his one eye

Really? You think that's all there is to the Sniper?
I think the Sniper would be good. He's a real gentleman, he's got that (pseudo-)Australian charm, he looks like somebody who would play cards every now and then -- oh, and he's a professional killer. I'm sure he's also full of entertaining stories about his experiences in the Australian outback.

The Sniper seems boring especially since he is the patient and silent type; silent because of his occupation. I am mostly basing these off of their meet the videos since it is the only way we see their personalities. His "meet the.." was really boring; other than his job, he is the m0st realistic and normal character out there in TF2 and the inventory game; Max is a sociopath, strong bad has a grandiose personality, Heavy is stupid funny, and Typco has a crazy zoo fetish. The realistic straight man is the player, so having another would be unbalanced.
Considering that none of the current Inventory characters play casino cards, I don't think whether or not a character appears to know how to play cards every now and then matters. No offense, but any game character you can think of looks like they can play cards. Not to be mean, but that is just my opinion.

I thought this was because he refers to Strong Bad as lil' Heavy, and SB is also red. If Heavy had been in the blu team then he would probably consistently try to assasinate SB thinking he's on the other team, which would make it awkward when trying to play poker.
That was my first thought on the subject, anyway.

I think they made him a little bit of a moron, but not as much as it 1 would think. Then again, I think moron is a strong word for Heavy since "simple" would be a better term.
I mean there were lines which made him a little bit simple like mistaking Strongbad's job to do a prank on the king of town as to murder or liking Tyco's wife just because she has red hair.

I think the RED Heavy was chosen simply because of the fact that Strong Bad has the best responses for when Heavy refers to him as a potential ally and Tycho is more likely to act afraid to the Heavy's insinuations that Tycho plays for the BLU team.

Anyway, heavy is the most quotable, ever since he got the sandvich. Shame he doesn't try to get advice from it. "What's that sandvich? Go all in! Well, I don't know, but if you say so..."
Anyway, in the blurb for Meet the Heavy, they explicitly averted the dumb muscle stereotype; he's a big bear; sleepy and conservative, but he'll kill you if you annoy him. Nothing in there about being dumb.

"No reason" if you disregard that BLU are attacking to capture/prevent the use of huge ballistic missiles and other assorted superweapons. They should so have depicted these items being fired if BLU lose a timed attack such as dustbowl or gravel pit.

It's not that BLU is "the bad guys" (in canon, both teams are being manipulated by The Administrator anyway), it's just that the RED Team is, for some reason or other, the "face" of TF2. Why is a mystery. Maybe they just like the RED outfits better?
Regardless, the only class to regularly be shown as BLU in promotional material is the Spy. ...Or maybe it's a RED Spy disguised as a BLU Spy? :p
