Its true.... I have never learned to play...
But I bought this game.... just because I love TTG, and I am sure it will have some funny dialogue.... anyone care to teach me how to play before it comes out?

The game will have tutorials, don't worry about it.

I have a faint idea, but I just bought it for Max and the Heavy. So I'm just going to think "Ah, this is a good hand" (when most likely it isn't) and just bet, or go all in, then probably have someone mock me due to my suck-y-ness.
Anyway, there are guides online, or you can try Telltale Texas Hold'em, there is a guide. Or search the forums, I think Jake posted one somewhere. Or as TentuZero said, there will be one in the game. Sadly, Max, Strongbad, the Heavy and Tycho will not be the ones who teach you. I think.

It is not that hard, Texas Hold'em is easy to learn and play.

Was there not a text guide on the menu with all the hands and such?

I played the TTTH tutorial and didn't notice anything like that.

In the bottom left corner there's a question mark. Click on it and it lists all the different hands. On the bottom right of that window there's a Poker Tutorial button.

Speaking of which, is there a way to reset your stats? This ever lowering negative number is getting depressing to watch.

I take that back, it WAS Beginners luck, now the game just keeps going in their favour no matter what, especially annoying when I think I'm good with Two Pairs and they pull a flush from nowhere.
Also is the Heavy suppose to be the most "Difficult" character in the game? I can always eliminate Strong Bad and Max first but the Heavy always sticks around til the end.

thats funny; the only time it worked for me, heavy and tycho would fold instantly, max would play a bit and drop out, and strong bad always went all in. every hand. for 3 tournaments.

I haven't won yet either. But I got close a few times. Stupid Max. I keep losing to Max.

Here's a sad sack story for ya. First hand, four of us go all in, I win, so I'm up 40k against Max's 10k... and I lose the tournament! Doh! :D
I actually learned how to play poker from telltales last poker game. Was addicted to that for ages, too. That said, even despite knowing how to play, luck still plays a large part.

I'm used to 5 card stud poker. This thing with 2 cards in hand and a shared hand of 3-5 cards is strange. :p
On that, why would anyone fold on the first round before the table cards are shown (as I'm seeing in the game a lot)? The 2 cards in your hand (unless they're a pair) are all pretty useless when the ones on the table aren't known. Sure if you have a 2 and a 4 of different suits you possibly won't be able to do a lot, but who knows.
Also how many decks are in play? Two?

Heavy was the first person eliminated in my game, followed by Tycho. Then... me. :(

It's hard to explain, but suppose you get dealt a hand such as 7-2 offsuit. You have several problems right there: your cards are low, and you cannot make a straight or flush with both cards. Even if you make a pair of 7's or a pair of 2's, you can be beat very easily. Worse, you can get all your money in with a hand like two pair 7's and 2's, and lose to a better two pair. Basically, there are lots of hands that can get you in a lot of trouble.
The other reason is you have to pay to see the flop (unless you're in the big blind and the pot is not raised). If you miss the flop, and most of the time you will, that money just went down the drain. Hence, you should be a little conservative with when you put that money in.
Also how many decks are in play? Two?
Hold'em poker, like virtually all forms of poker, is invariably played with one deck.

Ha - looking at my hand vs the opponents and seeing 5 tens confused me as I forgot 3/5 of my hand was shared. I've still got 5-card stud on the brain.

That is exactly what I thought too... I just figured since I didnt know how to play poker I was missing some sort of crazy strategy..... I am actually getting pretty good.... I went from not knowing anything this morning to winning a bunch.... fun..... I do not think I am ready to go to Vegas or the Native American casinos but I am decent I think.

I pretty much bought this for the dialog (I'm awful at poker), but after a lengthy showdown between me and Max that I eventually won... I think I really like poker. :D I have a feeling I'll be playing this long after I've heard all the lines.
I just wish Tycho wouldn't fold so often... it's like he's not even there most of the time. And I do get the feeling that the cards are in the CPU's favor.

Texas Hold Em is a game where you really re supposed to fold like 3/4ths of the time. If you don't have same suit, a pair, or two consecutive cards, there's not going to be a good chance to get a nice hand.
ShaggE
11/22/2010, 09:40 pm
I did not know that. Makes more sense now, although it's still weird that Tycho is so much more fold-happy than anyone else.

Not weird to me. Tycho is almost certainly intended to be the best or most "solid" poker player, so it's not surprising at all to me that he's tight (a "tight" player is somebody who folds a lot).

Wow, I am really out of my element here, aren't I? :p
I'm pretty good at Go Fish, though... did I mention that I wiped the floor with Max? ... Yeah, maybe I should let you guys hash out the intricacies, and I'll just praise Telltale on the dialog, haha.

This also changes as the game goes on. At the beginning, with four opponents, there's a pretty good chance that somebody will have something better than your crap hand, so you should find yourself folding except on the really good hands. When it's down to a face-off with just one opponent, you can open it up a bit.

I'm not that good at it either, but I still find it fun because of the characters involved. Losing doesn't feel so bad when it's Heavy Weapons Guy taking your chips and calling you a baby man. Of course, a lot of the game is luck too. Just by playing tonight, I picked up on a lot of the rules and card sets, though I still lost quite a bit due to taking risks and having bad luck, generally at the very end (I consistently make it to the 1-on-1).
I did win those sweet Shutter Shades for Demoman, though.

I think the First Annual Telltale Poker Spectacular has a nice ring to it, don't you? Plus, this way, we're not bound to Texas Hold 'Em.

Obviously you're not Mike the Mouth. I've never had a problem with lowball games myself, though I know a lot of people (even professionals) can't stand games like this and Razz.

I don't think I'd be able to stand single-draw lowball or razz. (I used to think I'd like razz, but lately I've changed my mind.) Triple draw has a special allure, though. I like a game where you're likely to hold the nuts at least once in a given session. Especially if that game isn't Omaha. :P

I don't think anyone would honestly be stupid enough to play real Texas Hold'em (as in real stakes, not for fun) without knowing how the game works.
furrykef
11/24/2010, 02:42 pm
Sure they would. It's how games spread: somebody sees a popular game and decides they want in on it. But few (except the rich) would do it without experience at playing other forms of poker for real stakes.

I don't know anything about poker but I'm having fun playing this and learning the basics. It's well worth the $5 and the taunts are hilarious. Maybe by the time I'm tired of this I'll be ready to move on to poker games against real people.
