After finishing the first episode does this mean that there won't be combining of items?

You'll never know, i'll bet there will be the possibility for combining items in the next four episodes. Like when you have to invent something and have to combine certain objects, like in the ''soup'' bar where Doc invented something.

The only game Telltale's ever made that has had inventory combinations is Tales of Monkey Island.
