After mentioning I'm part of a Skype campaign on the "whatever's on your mind" thread, there seemed to be a fair bit of interest in playing/learning D&D here on the forums. Therefore, I'll be starting a Skype campaign for those interested here. No experience with any sort of tabletop gaming is required, and I'll supply what's needed to game here to the best of my ability.

It will most likely be a 3.5 edition campaign unless most interested in playing would prefer 4th edition. I have links to sites to help build character sheets for both editions.

After the initial sign up, since I'm not sure Dropbox is a good idea as my five man group on Skype has been having problems with space, this thread'll serve as our Dropbox of sorts, character sheets, notifications, etc. will be posted here.

I won't claim to be a fantastic DM, but I do try and make sure my group has fun, and I will be playing a character as well as DMing. Also, I try to be on Skype regularly, so feel free to contact me if you feel you need help or just have general questions. I'll try to be as helpful as I can.

There isn't a set time yet, but given my group has people from the U.K., the east coast and the west of the U.S and we make it work, I think we can for this. We'll just have to figure out what time and days work for people. Weekends would probably be ideal, but again, it depends.

On the clerical end of things:

Here is the Character sheet generator (http://www.pathguy.com/cg35.htm) for 3.5 edition. The default settings that it has set for stat roll, etc. is fine.

However before you start generating your character, you should look at this site (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35) for classes and This site (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Races) for races, since both are important to how your your character should be built. I'm not requiring anyone to play strictly the base classes (Dwarf, Human, Elf, Half-elf, Halfling, Gnome, Half-Orc) because I personally do not like playing those classes and find them a bit restrictive. Also, select anything you think your character should be carrying starting out, but pay attention to the weight. Too many heavy items of too many items in general will slow your character down and, if you are spell caster, cause you to fail more often.

For newcomers, certain races have certain bonuses or weaknesses they add to some of your 6 starting stats; Strength (from which attack strength/lifting capability/etc. is drawn from), Constitution (HP/resistance to attacks/etc.), Dexterity (Speed/ability to dodge an attack/acrobatic type skill abilities/etc.), Intelligence (spell casting), Wisdom (Spellcasting and knowledge checks) and Charisma (certain spells and abilities rely on this skill, and it's particularly important to a bard). These bonuses tend to predispose races to certain classes, but that doesn't mean you have to follow it (I'm a big one for picking classes and races that don't go together. Like a Minotaur Bard). If your race is not necessarily designed to be a spellcaster (has a -2 to intelligence for example) you can put a higher number in that stat to compensate for the deficiency of your character's race.

Before deciding on a race or class take a good look at the description, that's the best advice I can give on constructing a good balanced character.

EDIT: Certain characters like Mind Flayers require you to start as a monstrous humanoid, and you take ranks as that first. We will follow that for the most part, except should you choose minotaur, create a Krynn Minotaur rather than the standard one. The standard minotaur build is supremely hampered at level 1.

Oooh. Despite being an avid gamer, I still have always wanted to try out D&D.
I think Neverwinter Nights is the main culprit for that!

Had a quick look at the character sheet and a couple of stuff off the other links.
I think if I play, I'll go for a Half-Elf Rogue, probably one that uses a shortbow, (maybe some light magic but if there are dedicated mages, then that might not be necessary).
(The character I rolled has high dexterity and intelligence)

I'd have to be a grey elf Ranger. That's what Remolay is in the D&D verse to me.

Glad to see so many people are interested in this. ^.^.

More clerical stuff, since people are already deciding on class/race/etc. (should have done this earlier but got buried in writing the scenario). Unfortunately, the character sheet site does not just let you link your character sheet, so I'll be looking at other methods to link them into the thread.

Also, make sure to gen your characters at level 1 (just mentioning it so it's clear to everyone).

Oh, and I should mention I've genned a bard for this campaign. So, I've got some spellcasting capabilities, but I won't be able to do any healing until around level 3 ish.

(Its my first try at making a character, so if it sucks then I'm sorry! XD)

Could then label the link like this:

Larren Moonchild (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40214&c=6288167) -level 1
Grognak (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40220&c=1333695) -level 1 (One I made for fun! XD)
Marsha Shrilltongue (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40225&c=7475992) -level 1 (Just practicing with the creator a little bit more! XD)

So things don't get too mixed up.

Here's my bard, Karis Dirgeseeker (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40287&c=9671225)

EDIT: Rangers do best with light or medium armor, particularly if your playing an elf. I'd recommend a chain shirt or studded leather starting out, Hide if your character can manage the weight with no penalties.

I'm gonna add real quick, though it may be tempting to be one of the more unique races, it's generally much better to play as one of the original seven. That said, it's really tempting me to be one of the unique races.

Actually, what's the context of this campaign anyways? I feel self conscious making a character without knowing what would make sense. (like choosing a planar character for a vanilla world)

I would like to explain the rabbit thing for my character. I first made Remolay as a Wood Elf Ranger using 2nd edition rules. One of the things i noticed was that the ranger could have an enemy it could not help but attack. Something traumatizing in their life happened with that species, and it just stuck. I immediately chose Rabbit. The DM approved it, and even said he might have to throw in a few rabbits just to see what happens, and then I never got to play.

Slept in late after crashing around 5 AM. Had some serious inspiration for the setting and spent a good three hours writing and fine tuning the hook.

I'd be interested in playing in a one-off session or irregularly. I'm fine with playing a "NPC" created by the DM. Otherwise I'd like to just drop in and "watch" the game without being part of it (as long as everyone involved is fine with it of course).

You're both welcome to sit in the first session or take one of the semi-regular NPCs. I haven't genned the latter yet, but I hopefully will get them up within the next day or so, so you can take a look.

There's nothing wrong with a unique race, though the standard seven are a good jumping off point (Then again, my first character was an epic level Silver Dragon (who later became a homebrewed race of Draconic Zombie) plane jumping with a couple of fallen celestials and an avatar of Tiamat, so yeah...suppose I can't really talk). Again, I'm pretty open to players being creative in regards to race.

The world is fairly standard, actually, but we're starting on a subcontinent which is home to a number of ancient ruins housing rare and mystical artifacts (Leading to the major occupations being adventuring and treasure hunting), so a planar character could conceivably be present, coming through a gate in one of the mentioned ruins.

Nyar' La' Thotep (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40291&c=2212745), Wizard, Great Old One.

I screwed up the level, which should say 1, but other than that I think I did all right on it. The character generator let me create my own race, so I hope that that's allowed.

Fawful, as DM I don't really have a problem with players generating their own races at all, in fact, feel free to do so, provided you give me a little background on the race you create so I can incorporate it into the scenario properly. However, I do...kind of have a problem with having an eldritch horror in the party for a standard campaign. Your stats are a bit overpowered for one, and really, your character is more suited to an epic level campaign. I definitely hang onto him, he's got good stats and is well built for an epic style campaign, he's just not really suited for this one.

I don't think this generator understands racial hit dice, otherwise your character would NOT have 7 hp, MGrant.

Unless I'm doing it wrong.

I noticed that when I rechecked the character sheet this morning. Minotaurs have a racial hit dice of 6d8, so I'll roll my HP again and fix that.

NOTICE: Anyone playing a nonstandard race should go back to the race link I put up last page and double check your character sheet to see if everything lines up. The generator appears to not necessarily take into account all Racial benefits. Please modify as necessary. If you need to reroll your stats, use this site (http://www.catchyourhare.com/diceroller/) which we will be using for the game itself once we get started.

EDIT: Fixed Karis Dirgeseeker (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40401&c=3928845)'s stats and re-uploaded them.

Giant Tope
01/12/2011, 06:30 am
I guess the issue is that any substandard race, especially those with larger level modifiers, are going to be horribly overpowered in a campaign with characters who don't have, like, 5 levels in fae like my character's gonna be.

mgrant
01/12/2011, 06:34 am
True, but there are ways of compensating for that in the leveling up process. I'm in a campaign now where we have two human characters on equal footing with a bugbear and a dragonborn, so it does work.

corruptbiggins
01/12/2011, 08:45 am
Well it looks like I have a lot of reading to do when it comes to creating my character. I'll give it a go and see what I come up with. I don't think I'll be creating a new race though, probably will just stick to a standard one.

Secret Fawful
01/12/2011, 09:02 am
Gee willikers! Did you add those modifiers to your race, or is that the level adjustment?

I added them. I really have no concept of what overpowered is in this game though, but I did want him to be powerful.

I'll probably make a more standard character then. The thing is, this is turning out to be really tough for me to get into because it takes so much learning and I have a hard time concentrating on and retaining information such as what is needed for this. I'm also having trouble figuring out exactly what I need to know now, or use now, so putting a character together by itself is proving to be a huge challenge. I'll probably end up being one of the clumsier players, as I'm REALLY new to this sort of thing. Like, as new as possible.

mgrant
01/12/2011, 09:16 am
Don't worry about being a clumsy first timer, Fawful, I really was on my first outing with D&D. It wasn't really until my DM told me to just loosen up and have fun with the experience that I started to turn my focus away from my stat numbers and strict adherence to my alignment. This game, most of all is about a bunch of people coming together and having fun making a narrative together.

As for what you need to know as a player, how I personally break it down so that it's easier to handle kind of follows the basic question of what do I want to be? If you want to be a frontline fighter, do you want to be the big guy who can take a lot of hits (go fighter and one of the races that has constitution bonuses), the fast fighter (fight based rogue or a dexterity based fighter), the sneaky fighter (rogue) or the damage dealer (Beserker is good at this). If you want to be a spellcaster, do you want to heal or deal damage? Do you want to have to prepare spells (Wizard) or just be able to cast them (Sorcerer)? Or, do you want to do a little of both (Bard)?

After you decide how you want to play, picking a race (most of the time, I try to play against type myself), alignment and how to distribute your stats sort of falls into place. As for avoiding being overpowered, go with the standard distribution of stats, and keep rolling until you see a setup you like.

If it helps in regards to retaining info, I still have to look up what half of my feats and such do, and I've been playing D&D since Junior High, there is a lot to know about the game, and nobody, least of all me, is going to expect you to remember it all off the top of your head.

It's actually entirely possible to get that HP, as Stayrs have a racial hit die of 5d6 + 5.

I have to gen three major NPC characters and finish writing our first adventure, but I think it's safe to say that come this time tomorrow we can start discussing days/times that will work for the campaign, so give it some thought over the next couple of days and let me know. The campaign will probably wait for four or five days minimum, just to give everyone time to check their schedules, finish genning characters, etc. before we get going.

Overall his stats seem pretty solid, and he looks ready for the campaign. When we level up though, I'd advise taking Quick Draw as a feat, since it will relegate switching weapons to a minor action (you can still attack) on a turn rather than a full action (you can only do a minor action, like ready an attack, or move).

Also, his character description is made of win. Thought you should know. XD

I'm just worried that there'll be too many people, and generally 6 is the maximum amount you'd want in a campaign. Oh well, I'm making a cleric because no one else has :P

EDIT: This is important. ARE THERE GOING TO BE UNDEAD THINGS

Possibly. Not on the first mission, but what's a good ruin exploration without a dungeon with the DREADED ROOM OF GHOULS at some point?

I did resist the urge to be a God Pirate God if that makes anything better.

Points for creativity Tom, but you might want to save your pirate god for an epic level campaign, which apparently I'm getting the vibe that I should run one at some point after everyone gets used to the system.

Well, we could always use open RPG, and use ventrillo for the chat..Plus open comes with a type chat feature.

I prefer Skype because the audio chat feature works better for DMing than chatting, but I suppose we could try those options...if they work for Mac. Otherwise you guys'll be short a DM.

Right, I've done one more character, sorted out a couple of names (though not on the first two uploaded sheets) and that'll do me for now. Here they are:

Cengared Ardeni (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40543&c=3765352)

Brennos Rek (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40474&c=5451059)

Rayvano Lamberink (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?id=40668&c=3264372)

As for Skype, I'm debating whether or not to create another account as the only one I have uses my real name. Now I don't mind people knowing it, I just don't want to share it publicly. Actually, I think the simplest answer is for me to add people who've already shared their user names and/or distribute my user/real name by PM.

What setting would this be using? I'm pretty picky with my D&D, if it's not Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Eberron or Dark Sun, it can fuck right off. (ESPECIALLY YOU, GREYHAWK, NOBODY LIKES YOU) Except for Spelljammer. Everyone loves Spelljammer. What's not to love about fantasy + astrophysics?

For the record, I'd probably be making a paladin. SWORDS, NOT WORDS!

This is a homebrewed setting I concocted rather than any of the set text settings. It seemed the best way to accommodate the large number of players and lets me vary missions easily to keep things from getting to boring on you guys.

Also, Spelljammer (ELVES....IN SPAAAAAAAAAACE) was great in theory, but I've never had a good game in that scenario. My DM tended to kill us 1 or 2 missions in.

mgrant

Well the setting is basically, "Our subcontinent has an abundance of ruins. You are an adventurer or treasure hunter taking assignments from your respective Guilds. Go to said ruins, punch out anything in your way and finish the mission given to you by the guild, be it collecting treasure, exploring or just clearing out monsters." so it could really go either way, depends on how you guys want to play it.

Alright, so quick update, just because I've been organizing stuff for the campaign pretty much all today between falling asleep on my keyboard, doing laundry and going to class briefings.

On the DMing side of things, I've got two missions put together already and I'm working on a third just to make sure that we're covered both in case we blow through the first mission faster than I expected or in case some real life stuff decides to gutpunch me sometime in the near future.

I've got both skype adresses and character sheets from the following players (thus confirming them as members of the campaign):

01/14/2011, 10:30 pm
Starting Tuesday, I'm on winter break until April 1st, o I'm fairly flexible. I will be in Hokkaido for one week and unavailable (Feb 7th-13th)

Other than my Saturday morning from 8AM to 2PM (that's NYC time 6PM to midnight on Friday) when I tutor English, I'm fairly free. Since my timezone is so far off from everyone else's, I'll be willing to wake up in the middle of the night one day a week if it's the only way to properly coordinate this. I'm in GMT +9 hours, so I know it's hard.

Starting at Saturday night at 7PM for the poster who is in GMT-7 would be 11 in the morning on Sunday, and fine by me.

GuruGuru214
01/14/2011, 11:09 pm
I'm also at GMT -7. I'm free pretty much every night except most Tuesdays and Saturdays, though I could swing those too if it's either early on Tuesday or late on Saturday.

Of course, evenings might be an issue here, as they'd be the wee hours of the morning for our DM in the UK. Here's a visual reference.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/GuruGuru214/timezones.png

It looks like if those of us in the US can manage late night on Saturday and mgrant can handle getting up early Sunday morning, then divisionten lucks out and gets Sunday afternoon. Otherwise, the best we can manage is sometime in the afternoon, making it late night for mgrant and early morning for divisionten.

Another option is doing Saturday Morning for those in the US, Sat afternoon for the GM and Sat night for me.

Again, I'm flexible. If I need to wake up at 4 AM, I have no school or work for three months. I don't mind, honestly.

mgrant - I'll be using the human fighter (Cengared Ardeni).

As for what times I'm available, well as I'm currently not working or doing anything really I can make any time right now.

mgrant
01/17/2011, 07:57 am
Now that I've actually got my schedule mostly finalized, I'll post my availability.

As it stands for me right now, All day Monday (Class and D&D in York) and Sunday (LARP/Persona D20 campaign) are out, as is Saturday(Stormwrack Campaign) Evening. Tuesday I've got class until around 5-ish and I've got a 2 o'clock class on Friday that ends around 4. Wednesday I've got nothing aside from the LARP RP session on campus that runs until after 11 PM, but I generally stay up 'til about 3 or 4 as it is, so if that works, I'll sleep in.

So basically, I'm available to DM Tuesday evening, Wednesday during the day and after 11, all day Thursday, Friday (except from about 1:45 to 4) and Saturday until about 6-ish.

Remolay
01/17/2011, 02:14 pm

GuruGuru214

(Days of the week are GMT, adjust accordingly)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/GuruGuru214/timezones2.png

Basically, I sectioned out an entire week into hours, GMT. All unformatted cells are available hours. I want everybody to go in and mark any hours that they're absolutely unavailable with a strikethrough and any unformatted hours which aren't ideal for them but are technically available if necessary as bold. Hopefully that makes sense. I made it a public document that anybody with the link can edit, so a Google account isn't necessary for it.

In case anybody needs it, here's that quick reference for time zones again.

Guru did a good job of outlining my schedule pretty well a couple of posts, but just to lock it in I've already been on the doc and crossed out completely unavailable times. EDIT (IMPORTANT, ALL INTERESTED PLAYERS PLEASE READ): It has been decided via Skype chat that our sessions will be on Friday evening starting @ 10:00 PM GMT. The first one will be tomorrow, if there are no major objections. If there are it will simply happen the following week. Hey guys, I'm really glad you had a good time. It was insane but you guys are a blast to DM for. After the harpy fight there's not much left to the dungeon except for the courtyard and the other half of the castle. I purposely try to keep most missions short because a long mission can really drag. The exception to that will be mission 6, but as for why...well, you'll just have to see. ;)

I had a great time, guys (except Tom). Thanks to mgrant for running it, and thanks to the rest of you for being absolutely nuts. We absolutely have to record next week.

We totally need to record it next week and upload it here. Our insanity is a glorious thing. I am going to probably have a beer on standby next week though.

I didn't get on until about 11ish, and I didn't really have a clue what was going on (though I kinda started to pick it up towards the end) but I still enjoyed it and look forward to next week. Though it must be said that I'm not much of a talker I still enjoyed listening to the craziness. Hopefully I'll start joining in more as we progress.

Just wait until you have a full session with Tom. You will be in the middle of the insanity trust me.

I swear, I'm turning him into a grue-flail just as soon as I get some rope.

As I said, I'll need a craft roll, but I will totally let you do it.

That was awesome. Just got back from my tutoring sessions, Will it be 8GMT every week? Cause that means I gotta get up at 4:30 Am here. Not that I mind. That was hilarious.

8GMT gave us some significant play time so it would be idea, but we can push it back if that would be better for people. It'll still be on Friday though.

I would still like to play as a weimic paladin of Nobanion, but at this point I wouldn't be able to commit to a regular game, too busy with work and various polymer clay-related projects. If you don't mind me dropping in now and then Mgrant, that would be great, but I know that can be pretty awkward for some campaigns.

mgrant
01/22/2011, 02:09 pm
It's fine, given everyone's on different ends of the globe, I actually built the setting with fluidity in mind. We're hired hands for an adventurer's guild and a treasure hunter's guild so people can miss or make missions as needed. You're more than welcome to drop in and mission. XD

Giant Tope
01/22/2011, 02:23 pm
Okay, so here's what happened this session through my point of view:

So all our characters got a job or somethin at the adventurer's guild, and our boss is some pms-y bitch who's all really pissy and discontent at us for no reason. She said somethin bout like... goin over some marsh place.. doin.. somethin.. I dunno. Kill something in an abandoned estate.

So we all go through this marsh, and it's a long journey, so we have to camp two nights. I climbed up a tree so I could get a better scope of everything around me and so I didn't have to sleep on the muddy ground. In the middle of the night, Kurt's character wakes up to find that we were going to be attacked by a carrion crawler. So some people woke up to go attack it. Remolay got paralyzed somehow. Idk, I wasn't there at the time, so I healed him anyways. Kurt then decided to be all badass, and he tore off the bug's head then shat down its neck. So that was that.

The next day, I gathered wood and food for the night and once we got camp together, I made food. Tomp insisted that he ate Remolay, even though he didn't. Tomp put out the campfire, so someone (forgot who) punched him into submission. I made a wooden cage and put him in it for the night. He kept on yammering about borrowing shovels and guitars or something. Idk. I climbed up another tree and then the two bards and I played songs.

The next day, we finally get to the estate. Once we got here, were were generally not very helpful and decided to dick around a lot. Tomp claimed to have forged Remolay's name on a blank check. Someone hit on Karis, and i got jelly, so i tried hitting on her too. We both failed. Someone tried hitting at Tomp, they failed, Tomp hit Remolay for a lot, which was dumb. After dicking around, I talked to some ferrets who told me about a harpy and skelletons.

So we go into the estate itself, and were trying to be careful except for Tomp who ran straight into the thing with no regard for anything. He insisted on finding treasure in a room that had no visable treasure. He got grabbed by an assassin vine, and I tied him up and threatened him with my scicle. He didn't stop, so I cut out his eye. Out of luck, I managed to find a pretty shiney thing worth a fair amount of gold in the corner of the room he was at.

While I was marveling at the gem and playing with my dog, I guess some people felt bad for Tomp and attacked the assassin vine. Tomp somehow managed to convince Remolay to get close to the vine, which went ahead and grabbed him. I decided to finally help because Remolay was fine and I didn't want him to die. After we killed the thing, I healed Remolay and we proceeded onward.

We found a room with a shrine and a mace. Tomp said he gave the mace to Fawful, who wasn't even in the same room. I headbutted Tomp, who then tried disguising himself as a chair or a table. I tried hitting on Karis again, of which I was exceedingly succesful, but she said something dumb like she didn't swing that way. Or something dumb like that.

Eventually, we go into this big room with a spiral staircase with a corpse in the middle of the room. Everyone was generally careful, except Tomp who barged right in and alerted the harpy to our existance. He then proceeded to be coward and disguse himself as the dead body.

When the harpy flew down, I threw Tomp at it. We continue to fight the harpy, and then that's generally when the session ended.

mgrant
01/22/2011, 02:27 pm
I punched TomP in the face and did about 8 damage.

Tope gave a pretty good summary of campaign events. Oh, and before I forget again, here is the setting intro I put together but cut down because we wouldn't have managed to get anything done otherwise. There are descriptions for the ruins, swamp etc. as well, but unless people are interested, I won't post 'em here.

The southern subcontinental island of Alceste is one of the most varied places in the Sea of Tyr. The high impenetrable Kalt mountain range is its most prominent feature, opening at it's peaks to the ruddy smithies of the Dwarven settlements and at its summit to the dark, hellbeast populated Underdark. Below the vein-like ridges of the mountain range are it's valleys, forests, deserts, and beaches, all vastly different from one another, yet all sharing a similar feature: the ruins. Alceste over its existence has been home to powerful kingdoms many times over and they all have left their mark on the land. These melancholy monuments to a time long past not only stand vigil over Alceste itself, but also the treasures its earlier inhabitants left behind, treasures coveted by sorcerers, scholars and men with more gold than sense. This greed for the relics of the past has created two occupations that call together a kaleidoscope of races and individuals to the shores of Alceste; the Treasure Hunters who specifically seek these pieces as a profession, and Adventurers, men and women who will take any job....for the right price.

Inland from the Western shores of Alceste, on the banks of the river Tallen, lies the town of Garok. Built on one of the many ruins of Alceste, it is a bustling port town and the gateway for many would-be adventurers into Alceste proper. The main part of town is vibrant and bustling with every merchant and race imaginable. On the Eastern edge of the market, however, is the Dead End, the part of town where Adventurers and Treasure Hunters meet, drink, plan and talk. It is less clean and crowded than the rest of Garok, but it is no less vibrant. It is here that your own individual wanderings have brought you. To your back is the bustling market and a squat stone building housing an inn called the Duskblade, sitting close to the entrance to this part of town, is straight ahead. A dozen people in varying stages of drunkenness are scattered around, their travel-worn clothes marking them as adventurers or treasure hunters.

Inside the building is dim, but welcoming. The dull murmur of conversation buzzes through the room as you enter. The innkeeper steps away from another patron and greets you with a smile. After getting a night's rest at the Duskblade you head out to the guilds. Garok has one for Adventurer's and another for Treasure Hunters, both willing to take anyone on.

I'd like to point out that I threw TomP earlier on in the campaign, (and knocked mgrant's character in the pit with him, she got out, and someone unfortunately saved him as well...), and I tripped him onto the wizard corpse.
During the currently unfinished battle with the Harpy, I shot it in the eye with an arrow, partially blinding it.

Also, we have a fire resistant grue in our party, (which I suggested setting on fire and using him as a weapon).

There are planar rifts in my homebrew world, so dimension jumping isn't completely out of picture, if a bit unlikely. Still this early in the campaign I can't imagine it being too much of a problem so I say leave it be for the time being.

I think I just broke my flatmate, who's an even bigger D&D geek than I am. I told him I was playing a wemic that was going to become a paladin after he's done getting the Monstrous Humanoid levels, and my flatmate's response was "but what will your special mount be once you reach 5th level in paladin?" (for those of you that aren't huge D&D geeks, which is probably most of you, paladins get a special mount at 5th level, usually a warhorse) So... wtf does/can a wemic ride? I can't imagine that a horse would like having a lion sitting on its back... though he'd certainly get around pretty quickly.

Everyone who levelled, we forgot to mention HP before some of you left. You gain more HP when reaching level 2, so to determinate how much here is what to do: you roll depending on your class (d4 for Sorcerer and Wizard, d6 for Bard and Rogue, d8 for Cleric, Druid, Monk and Ranger, d10 for Fighter and Paladin, d12 for Barbarian), and add your Con modifier to your roll. That's the extra hit points you get this level.

If your Con modifier is negative, you can't end up with less hit points this level than the previous one. I think you can't end up with the same result either, that you get at least one extra hit point per level. But we'll have to ask the Word of God (mgrant) on that one.

GuruGuru214
01/28/2011, 06:42 pm
Nice! I rolled a 4 and my Con modifier is +2, so my hit points just doubled from 6 to 12! I'm slightly less feeble now! (http://www.text-upload.com/read.php?t=2041)

I have another question. Does my familiar also level up, and if so how does that work?

mgrant
01/29/2011, 05:30 am
Your familiar levels up in kind of an odd way, it's every two levels so level 3, level 5, level 7, etc. When it does level, it gets a +1 to it's Natural Armor and a +1 to it's intelligence. Also it may acquire added abilities (such as lvl 3 where it gets the abilities to deliver it's master's touch spells).

Next week, I guess I'll take more of a backseat, (maybe we might get somewhere in the campaign! XD).

It only gets bad when it gets too rowdy. Did you notice that everyone was throwing so much energy into being loud this week that there wasn't as much silly stuff going on in the game? Okay, I admit that a lot of the silliness last week came from us abusing the hell out of Tom, but then there was stuff like Icedhope's...erm..."Fatality" against the carrion crawler, which Tom had nothing to do with, and we didn't really do much of that kind of stuff this week.

And ironically, Fawful was the one who probably did the most memorable thing in the game when he lost his sword in the monster's stomach. Guess it just goes to show that someone can turn around and be awesome once they turn down the obnoxious.

Oh, and I don't really remember if you were part of the problem or not, Retro, which is odd since you have one of the most easy to distinguish voices in the group (along with Remolay and Biggins).

I thought the best part was when you failed to catch the healing potion that was thrown at you.

Yeah, the dice were just not on my side that day. I think every single time I got a natural 20, I not only failed the critical check, but I rolled shit for damage too. Not that that happened very often, considering I had a hell of a time just landing a hit. That's why I kept giving up on the crossbow and using Magic Missile. Hopefully the masterwork crossbow will help out with that a bit.

ok so i haven't been on the teal tale furms for a while, so i haven't really been able to post what i thought about the game.

first of all, i didn't leave because i felt bad about the game, it was about another pressing issue. so if anyone thought that was the case, please don't.

HOWEVER. I do have to say, for the first portion of the game, I was sorta disappointed in the way people acted. And while I'd never be caught dead saying that our D&D games should be dead serious 24/7, it shouldn't be mass chaos random social hour either. We can have that some other time if we want (such as after the session is over), it's really not an issue at all, but I really do want to play a game. That's why I signed up for this. When we don't take any of it seriously and try to bend all the rules and break the 4th wall all the time and interrupt everyone all the time, it's as if there really isn't a point in the game. And honestly, acting like this is pretty fucking disrespectful to our lovely DM who set the game up for us in the first place. She didn't have to do this, but she went out of our way to create a complete campaign for us. It got to the point where we were wasting so much time that we had to skip past certain parts of game flavor (the thing that makes the game fun) and it quickly turned into: "go here" "fight this thing" "go here" fight this thing".

You don't have to sacrifice fun to play the game either. That's even the entire point the game. Pretend it's like "Who's Line is it Anyways?" with dice and dragons, where you have a certain thing you have to act out, but you have fun with it anyways.

I'm really not mad at anyone, I just wanted this to be put on the table. You guys are cool dudes, and I like the campaign so far for the amount of game we are able to play. So yeah, let's pull our shit together, okay?

That's pretty much everything I wanted to say about it and didn't get into words, particularly the part about our DM, who deserves much more appreciation than she gets for all this.

Hope you're feeling better, Tope.

I should mention a few things about why I left early too.

1. To be honest, I needed to work on an animation project, and I wasn't giving it the attention it deserved. But also...

2. Along with everything Tope and Guruguru said, there are just too many people in the party, and so combat has become a chore, especially if you're playing a Level 1 Cleric who can't do much else than keep clubbing/punching things for miniscule damage because you can only cast 4 spells a day. It's hard to keep track of what's going on, especially with no visual cues (for me, anyway), so I honestly wasn't having all that much fun.

With all that said, I'm not sure if I'll be showing up to the next game. I don't want to rain on people's parade anymore anyway. >_>

EDIT: Oh, and 3. I was feeling pretty sick and had a huge headache.

Hey, since I have to jut put early normally, what fo I do about leveling? And the bard spells? I need four from my previous level and some level ones for my new one, right?

Okay, since some people had to bug out early, but still showed up for the days session, I'm basically breaking it down so that everyone who showed gets the EXP from that session. It serves the purpose of both keeping the party semi-balanced and also making it less of a headache for me to try and keep track of who was on what mission and how much EXP they have. As it stands, everyone who showed up for last Friday's session has 1680 EXP and is therefore level 2.

A lvl 2 Bard can use 3 level 0 spells a day and 0 level 1s. However you should know 5 0 level spells and 2 level 1s. Also, you get 6+ INT mod for skill points at each level. We don't get any unique bard skills again until next level though (same with feats). For HP roll a D6 + CON mod for your additional HP.

Also, I feel like I shouldn't really add much to the post mortem discussion because I'm your DM and this really should be a player discussion and all things considered you guys haven't been bad...I would appreciate the noise dialed down a bit. I really appreciate the enthusiasm guys, honestly, but it makes it a bit hard to set the scene for you guys if I have to shout it out.

Session this week is same time and date as usual. My class actually got moved up to tomorrow, so I have the day to put some finishing touches on the next two missions (The Seawell mission ended up a lot shorter than I'd intended, sorry, the mission to Passaj should make up for that). We're starting to get into the good stuff guys.

The Seawell mission actually worked out pretty well for where it ended up. A nice short mission that we were able to end our session at the end of was kind of nice after the calamity that was the end of the first mission.

Aww, dammit, I'm going to be a couple hours late. I forgot my mom scheduled (rescheduled, actually) two doctors appointments on Friday that I have to take her to.

I'm not sure what's sad, that I briefly considered how I could still manage to play from the hospital, or that in that extremely short period, I actually figured out how it would be possible to do it using my cell phone, my bluetooth headset, $3 in Skype credits, a printout of my character sheet, and my PSP.

Of course, I was never serious about that to begin with, and much less so once I considered just how extremely geeky it would be if I actually did something like that. But it is possible!

Edit: Scratch that, I think I misinterpreted Skype's mobile offerings. With my particular phone, I don't think I could get in on the voice chat unless I put money on the account of whoever hosts the call. This is all still purely theoretical, mind you. I'm a sucker for developing really horrible theories.

Edit x2: Scratch that even further, the PSP dice roller homebrew app didn't work and I can't be bothered to try and fix whatever went wrong.

Don't worry about missing too much Guru, the next couple of missions are a bit on the long side, so you should be able to jump in no problem.

And if we want to talk sad, I just spent an hour genning an Obsidian Dragon character who will probably never get used because I felt like it. I'm in a much much sadder place than you, my friend.

EDIT: I NOW WANT TO MAKE A PARTY OF DRAGONS HAPPEN AT SOME POINT GUYS.

The True Dragon main types are the only Dragons that have playable forms as far as I know. This leaves Chromatic, Metallic, Gem, Ferrous, Lung and Planar as the options. Given I made an Obsidian Dragon, I obviously went for Gem which I rarely play. I'm actually the kind of person who mostly plays chromatic dragons given the chance to play one. I think it's the same reason I like playing mindflayers, it's fun to be the pretentious dick of the party occasionally.

(btw, I'm now working on a way to potentially have the dragon thing work in the realm of the current campaign. It's probably not a good idea and I'm not even sure anyone'd really be interested given we have a lot of people still just getting used to the system, but damn, a party of ten dragons would be all kinds of badass...damn, I need more hobbies)

You know back in school I knew a girl who was obsessed with dragons.
She used to draw them all the time, with different colours and body-types.
(She did art, and was very good too)
(I swear she once even pretended to be a dragon...)

What is it with women and dragons?....

Lung Dragons? I think I don't want to know what they really are, there is no way it can be better than what I'm picturing right now.

They're from the Oriental Adventure expansion, they're basically Chinese styled river dragons. They're great spell casters, but not as overall well balanced as the other true dragons.

Dragons are awesome? I'm speaking as a mythology nut who loves kaiju films and monsters in general though, so I probably come at it from a different....less creepy angle.

Go for it! They're fun to make (and play). If you don't have the Draconomicon, there's a dragon character generator if you just google D&D 3.5 dragons that makes a lot of the stat stuff easier to handle.

Lung or Long Dragons. Basically Asian dragons.

Also, I'm looking through the dragonomicon, and man, Gold Dragons are bitches.

Edit: Oh geez, the treasure hoard list in this book is so much more fun than the one in the DM book.
