BTTF IPAD-How use a selected item (tape recorder)

I am following doc brown in front of courthouse and I need to tape record his mumblings. I have properly selected the tape recorder but how do you actual use it to record ? Every time I press the tape recorder it keeps bringing me back into the 'select and item' option instead of actual recording doc brown.

Just go into your inventory, and then when ur back in the game you'll see the tape recorder at the top. Just tap on doc and Marty should start recording
