View Full Version : What i'd like to see in Season 2!

With season 2 of sam and max confirmed a few thoughts of what i'd liked to see crawled in to my editable and unwashed brain!

I'd really want to see:

- Flint paper! where the heck was he? i know they had to introduce new characters but we havent seen flint paper since the original game. So want to see him as a recurring character from the second season onwards!

- I heard that Purcell was once working on a sam and max comic about max being shot and replaced by a monkey. If prucell isnt planning on finishing it they could use it as a seperate story that links up with the rest. Just an idea.

That's all i can think of so far, what do you guys think?

Yeah I second Flint Paper.. if they could get steve to write a monkey episode..and get Mike Stemmle to write another episode that would be pretty kool. rubber pants commandos and mack salmon showing up would be great also.

I actually really would like to see some kind of map or more maplike-interfaces--the calendar in Episode 4 or the cooking ingredients in Episode 2 for example. Instead of Max asking you who you're going to call, there's a map or rolodex with images for White House, Sybil, etc. Of course a map when driving the car would be pretty cool, except it might look like overkill when there are very few locations that you can visit.

(I think I might just not like Max asking "Where are we going, Sam?" or "Who are you calling, Sam?" Imagine Max asking what day we should change the date to, or what ingredient should we put in next...)

ICBM's! Oh wait, they just did that. How about Sam & Max in space?

Here's a strange idea: a pair of very different episodes that take place simultaneously. In one, you play as Sam, and in the other, you play as Max. They could have the two splitting up are working seperately, but whatever the case, the two games should feature very different points of view. Perhaps such a concept could be crammed all into a single episode.

03/08/2007, 08:26 pm
ooooh, that's a really neat idea! but that sounds like a bigger project than just a regular Sam&Max series.

I'd like to see some better villains! Brady Culture was kind of lame, Myra was more a parody of talk show hosts than a real threat, and Chuckles was the one behind the goings-on with the Toy Mafia, so he didn't have much screentime in the third game.

The giant rampaging marble statue of Abe Lincoln was closer to the usual wacky standards of Sam & Max antagonists, but I'm hoping for guys like Lactose, the Intolerant; Larvo; the giant moon roaches; the Beast from Central Aisle; maybe Lorne: The Friend for Life. I can't think of any others just now, but those people almost managed to seriously endanger our heroes and were still funny.

I thought they just said they were considering Season 2? :/

And so are we!

OK, three words:

Time tra vel. Having the duo meet themselves as old people... Or cubs... (I just love the kid-versions of them in the sketchbook!) Or just meeting themselves from 5 minutes before.

Ah, which gives me another idea: A kid-episode! Sam & Max solving their first case as cubs...

Obviously people here are eager to get something more crazy than just a crime-sitcom.

I love time travel and character switching. Sam or Max (just one) should get sent to the past, and the one in the past should have to work with the one in the present to get back to the future!
(I just played Day of the Tentacle, can you tell?)

AdamG
03/09/2007, 10:19 am
In the cartoon series they were kids in an episode, and in another they grew older and older. (Sam was all wrinkled up and saggy, Max was spotty and hunched over with a cane and a long beard.)

Does anyone consider the cartoon canon, perchance?

I was just watching the intro from episode 4 again, and I think Season 2 would deserve a new credits-sequence. Maybe an intro along the lines of most sitcom-intros, with "footage" from the previous season(s)! So, having the best moments from Season 1 being replayed in a more cinematic way (and not the "gameplay-looking-at-it-from-the-side"-way) and maybe some crazy stuff from the machinimas, cut together in the sitcom-way (and varying from episode to episode). That's my proposal. Do that.

Jake
03/18/2007, 09:02 pm
That might explode the game. That might be awesome though. I had a more elaborate idea for what to do with the season 1 intro, but we ran out of time and ended up just going with the driving. I think it worked out really well, and was a nice reference back to past Sam & Max stuff, but there's potential for far cooler stuff.

numble
03/18/2007, 09:13 pm
Well the E3 announcement/trailer looked like a good idea of something like that--driving through a vortex while different Maxs float/fly by--something more elaborate could involve scenes from the past somehow.

Jake
03/18/2007, 09:15 pm
The only issue with that is that an intro involving scenes from the past requires a LOT of 3D data - lots of past sets, all flying by in rapid succession. It could explode. I wanted to push the 60s spy movie silhouette thing further for season 1, but the idea of doing a Laverne & Shirley type thing was also brought up at one point... so, heh, you never know what'll happen in the future.

numble
03/18/2007, 09:25 pm
Can't cheat and just play pre-rendered/pre-made video? I guess filesize constraints come into play...

Jake
03/18/2007, 09:31 pm
I couldn't say definitively how that would best work because I have no idea :) ... but there's no pre-rendered anything in Sam & Max yet, and I doubt there would be in the near future.

LuigiHann

So the opening credits sequence is in real-time 3D?
Why, then, is it not interactive? :p

AdamG

I think basically what a Season 2 would need is simply to be bigger and better. Since it would be established by then, er is now, as a success, you could put a couple more people on the project which would allow for more things to be done.

It might sound unimportant, but implementing a city map into Season 2 that pops up when Max asks "Where are we going?" would be a nice way to at the very least make the game feel more open, even if the map's only purpose was to make you have to click on the destination before Sam would say where you're going when there's just one destination.

Adding a place that's always visitable in every episode that's away from the main neighborhood would give the map creedence. Kind of like the map from Hit the Road, and the gas station. The map could be drawn in typical Sam & Max fashion on maybe an old burger wrapper from a fast food place or on the dashboard.

There's that resteraunt way over on the extreme right of the neighborhood too. That could always open in Season 2, and introduce a new character(s). A resteraunt would make for an interesting setting. :D

Laserschwert
03/19/2007, 03:11 am
And as with a lot of TV-series there's always the chance of... *drumroll*... "Sam & Max: Freelance Police - The Movie" (or in this case "The Full-Length Game")!

But let's stick to more episodes first.

There's that resteraunt way over on the extreme right of the neighborhood too. That could always open in Season 2, and introduce a new character(s). A resteraunt would make for an interesting setting. :D

Yeah, and you can meet your informant over there... or just order some "really bad food", as the sign says.

Hey, i know you guys are at early development if development have started at all for the 2nd season but i got a question...

what are the chances of you guys bringing are loveable flint paper as a reaccuring character in the 2nd season. I was really sad that you didnt include him in the 1st season. Dont get me wrong i love the 1st season so far and it's one of my favourite point and click games and yes i have played most of the lucasarts games when i was younger. Just really really curious and really miss that character.

ogoun
03/19/2007, 05:08 am
Use the "salmonax" character.. I think he would make a good villain for an episode, and I dont recall him ever having much exposure in the sam and max universe (comics, cartoons, etc) before...

Also, many games have had fun with the "advent" magic words "xyzzy" and "plugh".. Perhaps max could find some 5 letter character wheel thingy (like that thing in the davinci code) that was related to the main quest, but if you move the letters to say xyzzy (instead of whatever word is needed to be entered as part of the main quest), then you are instantly transported back to the office, for example, without all that pesky driving.. Would have been handy in episode 4 :)
Plugh could also do something funny.

Cheers,

Pete

I ask myself that every day. I also ask why it wasn't a song and dance routine with 30 desotos doing synchronized swimming-like stunt-driving maneuvers while barreling down the freeway at 200 miles per hour. Then I remember "it's because we built it in two days!" I think it came out pretty well, though. A lot of people were pleasantly surprised by it when they first loaded up the game, and in my book that's a success.

what I really like to see in season two is something based on the comedy shows by Norman Pace & Gareth Hale. Those guys are hillarious and would be perfect as a guest spot on sam & max. If not them, then some characters from their show. Billy & Johnny would be perfect for sam & max :D

I wouldn't mind seeing (read: implement these ideas immediately!):

- An episode 'guest directed' by, say, Steve Purcell, Tim Schafer or Quentin Tarantino. Or all of the above.

- An episode involving a Cthulhu-mythos inspired cult. Even Sherlock Holmes got his own 'Cthulhu' game, why can't Sam and Max?

- CarBomb! (or non-Lucasarts licensed equivalent)

Why would Sam and Max need raytracing, bloom and whatever other graphic effect is in this week?
Especially when it means people on PCs lower down on the power spectrum can't play the game because they're still using the same equipment they got last week instead of tomorrow's graphics cards.

That said, I think the graphics the game has now do the job very nicely.

Just IMHO, but for me the style fits just very well in the theme of S&M.

Graphics are just a part of the whole "picture", so i think the balance is really given. ( I'm also sure that TTG will enhance/refine the graphics here and there slightly for the good of the "whole picture")

Ok 5:4 for Season 2 would be cool, but thats just a bite( for me at least )

ok, not saying raytracing or whatever technical 3d stuff,
i guess i meant better effort in textures or art direction
the big textures kinda annoys me.

i remember the first scene of epsidoe one with the bulletholes on the wall and thinking what crappy 3d.

After reading your post, i guess you are just to nostalgic.

2d/graphics/painting/ hand drawn animation(pixelfight) != 3d/graphics animation, that's a whole other world.

Give them much much more money, and they can hire more staff...to do more stuff.

Just to mention, thats the first Season, do you all right the first time? Are you perfect?

btw in which resolution do you playing?

Not a offending post, just ..yick yack... my own yick yack.

Edit X; But yeah i should admit, that some other adventures from some companies had some weird style(not even the right word for it) in 3d, as example, the (canceled) max in freelance police looked odd.

2d/graphics/painting/ hand drawn animation(pixelfight) != 3d/graphics animation, that's a whole other world.

Give them much much more money, and they can hire more staff...to do more stuff.

Just to mention, thats the first Season, do you all right the first time? Are you perfect?

btw in which resolution do you playing?

Not a offending post, just ..yick yack... my own yick yack.

Edit X; But yeah i should admit, that some other adventures from some companies had some weird style(not even the right word for it) in 3d, as example, the (canceled) max in freelance police looked odd.

i was playing 1024x768

money.. i hope they made loads out of this one..
but if they had to choose between hiring artists over scriptwriters... ill go with the writers. I buy this game for the fun dialogue visuals were secondary.

I'm telling you, having Sam and Max go back in time to 1980 to stop the season's villain from taking out Steve Purcell and, as a result, destroying reality would be totally awesome.

I don't want to order it because microsoft said that that site didn't have security. Did anyone order that part?

I ordered stuff from DeLoreans store one time, no problem =) Used Visa to pay, shipped to Europe, Norway.

DeLorean keychain, t-shirt and a watch ^^ I love DeLorean, I'm going to buy one when I get rich, until then I just have the keychain, but that's cool as well =p

About season 2... what I would like to see is variety in the setting. The office has to be there all the time. The main street including Bosco's and Sybil's are fun but I think they will get old with season 2. I'm sure the two characters can make an appearance in a different sort of way. Kinda like how Jimmy pops up. When half the game takes place in the same setting as before, I don't think it would be good thing for another season.
I loved season 1, but if next season still involved getting items for Bosco to solve part of the puzzles its gonna get repetitive. By that I mean going to the same store and dealing with an insane price in the same manner as before. Those things worked real well in season 1. I'm just worried about it getting repetitive in season 2.
As to features:
-An inventory where items can be combined
-Surprise us by having Max "controllable" at one point. By that I mean you tell where to go, but not having him solve things the way anyone would expect (i.e. using the gun on an object is taken literally with Max beating someone with it).
-As mentioned before, have earlier actions affect the outcome of things. But what would be cool is having our progress in an episode make something else appear in another. For example, melting the polar ice caps in ep4 could have a background effect on ep6 whereas those who have not done so will not see it. Same goes for people who didn't buy ep4. This can boost sales too.
All in all, I do have faith in Telltale and I am sure they'll be able to mix it up just right. Which is why I'll be buying season 2 when its available.

yes to flint paper!!! YAY FLINT!
yes to inventory being a little better with using items on eachother (we got a tiny bit of that in the mole the mob and the meatball but only one puzzle)
oh, and as has been mentioned before.. a look at function seperate from get.

Other than that, keep up the good work guys! I really enjoyed series one (the text part in episode 5 I think was my fave)

Would love to see a much more interactive minigame base. I loved the infocom style text based advent, I have so many ideas for little games and things that could be added or done differently. A "hogan's alley" (look it up kids) type game that would be called rats alley..and you shoot the rats or aliens and such. Also a sam and max pinball game would be nice.. maybe teleport max into a ball in the machine and have sam play with his life MUAHAHHAA. Also a nice streetfighter type max vs Lincoln or other characters would be nice. ( I think back on the space quest stoogefighter memories)
How about a sam & max casino (sorry mr lowe) and when you win any game more than 3 times in a row max takes off his clothes and goes on a run around the place.. making it a winning streak.(yes I know he has no clothes that was the joke) Also heard a reference to the word ballistic, so many puns around that word could have been made.
I also miss the good ole sierra adventure pointers, I want a hand or finger, with max it would be mouth. Would also love to see at least one episode where max is in control.. yes I know of the irony in the statement and that it might cause some warp in the space time continuum to have control over such a chaotic creature but... :P
I agree with a sort of map instead of just pick where you want to go in text.
Nice hint at the monkey island insults in the reality 2.0 I would love to see a nice full boar insult duel.. it never gets old.
Would love to be able to punch stuff or shoot stuff and watch it have an effect. Shoot the light, it shatters, punch the donut box, max goes to town on it... etc.
A change up of items in places visited more often.. IE boscos, your place sybils.. hers does change but I notice not much goes on in the other places that would make me keep looking at it in the next season :P
Would love to see some of the original characters put into the game like mentioned above as well.
I know there is more but I cant think! As im writing from my work and dont have the text with all my input in it :P I have a bunch of input for the wii port if one exists XD

Anyway sorry for the book!

It's sort of already been done by the cartoon ("The Tell Tale Tail"), but I'd love to see Sam & Max's take on Gothic horror. Lovecraft, Stoker, M.R. James...oh the possibilities.

i want to see an episode where enviromentalists try to take over the world, and plant grass on the streets, put trees everywhere, put windmills everywhere, stuff corn in the exaust pipes of cars, etc....

and have sam and max in the middle of a war between bosco and sybil, and you have to work for both of them without the other side knowing, that would be fun-ny, with a battle line in the middle of the street, etc...

My ideas for season 2

1. Sam and Max infiltrate an illegal street raceing gang. Seeing the desoto pimped out would be cool.

2. Or they could infiltrate a biker gang. That would be cool, you could have Ben from full throttle as a temporary character or just references to the Full Throttle game.

3. Sam and Max could be assigned as spies and Boscoe could supply them with gadgets, aka shoty products. The desoto could be pimped out with gadgets.

What about if another pair of freelance police moved into Sam and Max's neighbourhood. This would spark rivallry and throughout the season the pairs could be sqauring off against eachother in order to solve each case.

A DeSoto inventory item.

If you want to quickly go to another location, clicking on the icon makes Sam say (something in the lines of) "Let's go little buddy". And then Max replies the same reply that you get when clicking on the DeSoto ("Where are we going Sam?")

Of course, if you want the old way, just walk to the DeSoto.

How about making Sam & Max interchangeable (ala DOTT). They could have a shared inventory, but making Sam use an item gives a different result than making Max use the same item. It could increase the puzzle possibilities as well as generate twice the hilarious dialog!

What season 2 needs :

• Flint Paper. That goes without saying.
• A bit longer episodes.
• Jared Emerson-Johnson and all the great people at BASD.
• Telltale's talent :)
• A different "neighbourhood" area. The hallway of the building of S&M office, would be great. But please do not have Sybil and Bosco pop up in every episode, they've been overused in Season 1.
• I like the way the story starts "small" and then takes ridiculously big proportions in Season 1.

You've got a bunch of good suggestions, but I really like this one. I do think it will feel a little stale if we use Bosco and Sybil for the main recurring characters in Season 2.

Flint Paper and someone else* would be good.

That doesn't mean Bosco and Sybil can't have spot appearances, though.

I agree 100%. I really like the characters but they'll feel way too overused if they are used in the same way as season 1. This would be especially true if they follow the same format of: case + Bosco item and crazy price + random Sybil encounter. The formula worked real well in season 1 but it may even kill season 2 by being way too repetitive.

more senseless violence! more "Why... won't... you... die!" and "I really want to turn this guy inside out." + "Oh, that gives me an idea!"

I agree with that too. A more violent Max is welcome in every way.

The Faberge Egg Collection guy :D.

If TT adds Flint's and Stinky's and removes the Sybil+New Job *joke*(completely) and Bosco+Crazy item for a few eps... I'm done.

Oh, and no more Superball/bounce puzzles.

At Bosco's:
Max: I gotta go to the bathroom.
Superball: I'm sorry sir, I can't let you pass. Orders.
Sam: Sic'em little buddy.

hmmm since Superball and the mole weren't blissified/maxified that means...prismatology isn't dead. Maybe Superball could be a door-to-door prismatology evangelist :D

I also agree that Bosco and Sybil are overused. I just posted somewhere else about it, but it's in a thread that's gone a bit off-topic. They're great characters and I don't want to see them go completely, but having them pop up in some different locations, doing less orthodox things and not necessarily being there every episode might be a bit of relief from what was becoming a little monotonous towards the end of Season 1.

And I'd also like to see more Violent Max! In fact, I just agree with everything Maratanos says :) He should have more violent moments and less waxing-eloquent-about-his-weird-habits moments. I don't really think he should be portrayed as crazy, as such... it's hard to define, but I think he's always in control of his violence - he just REALLY loves it!

Edit: Oops, it wasn't Maratanos that said the second bit. Well... I agree with everyone OnCallDoc agrees with!

I'll add my vote for more locations and items. Not just because things got a bit repetitive, but also because even when the puzzles got difficult, all I had to do was walk around trying to use everything with everything, and it wouldn't take me long to figure it out, even if I didn't know the solution.

Okay, hopefully that made some sense. :p

Item combination would also be a very welcome addition to go with those extra items.

I don't care much about more NPCs, but it's obvious obvious that Bosco and Sybil were getting tired by the end of the season. The second season REALLY needs more recurring characters, and even better if they're returning characters from the comics, if there isn't a copyright problem anyway.

Jimmy stays, though. I wanna torture him more. :D

Speaking of "torture", if you're gonna make Max more violent, I'd rather you guys didn't try anything too explicit. S&M was always more about implied violence. The original comics didn't have any blood, and they were UNDERGROUND comics. Just because there was something oozing from the robot's severed head in the hrt opening, doesn't mean the boys have to go hardcore on everyone's @ss.

Oh, and please keep the politically incorrect humor coming. 'Cause more than anything else, that's what makes Sam and Max for me.

Yes, I agree, it's much more funny when it's not explicit. Also, when I referred to Max being more violent, I didn't mean he should necessarily be doing many more violent things; sometimes it's just about the nature of the comments he makes in response to Sam's

How about small playable opening sequences. Like in James Bond when it begins with a previous mission of his. Sam and Max could start with the player having to end their last case.

Well i get your idea. :)

Its just that i´m used to those Oldschool Adventures we all loved (S&M Hit the Road, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Dott etc etc.). All those games had pretty tough riddles to solve, and all included the combining of Objects with eachother. Item Combining would make the game harder which would suit the more advanced players. Hey, how about an Easy and Hard Mode like in Monkey Island 2? That way anyone would be satisfied.

To me old school adventure games are the text adventure games like Zork. While it did have tough puzzles, there was no more combining of objects than the Sam and Max game series has. So, I guess it's really a matter of perspective. :)

-A wedding, because Sam got drunk and put himself in a odd situation, marring another dog, so Max has to find a way to end the wedding
-A prison, because Sam and Max went undercover to catch a guard who has been smuggling contraband with the other guards and the prisoners
-A high school, because Sam and Max never finished the 12th grade
