I don't know how far this topic'll go, but it could be interesting. I guess it depends how often you guys listen to music; I do it every day!

I'll start. You can post links too if you want. I mostly only ever listen to songs I like, so this list might end up being rather silly. :D

Under the Boardwalk - Bruce Willis and the Temptations - 11/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2zk56DDjGc&feature=related)

Joy to the World - Three Dog Night - 11/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBRHpjWRIME&feature=fvst)

Devil Woman - Bruce Willis - 9/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDXkd2NyCCE)

Sinner's Prayer - Bruce Willis, BB King, and Billy Preston - 10/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysiT0P6OtvU)

Everybody Jam! - Scatman John - 11/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VaJVDHRpvA)

Snow Road - Yuka Tsujiyoko - 9/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VI6z-aOmlY)

Fair play to that! :)

Currently listening to Fully Faltu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zr8hVyHBiw) from a new Bollywood film called F.A.L.T.U... I rate it a 7/10. While it's a grand catchy beat for now, I might go off it later... and also, Pitbull might asking for his beats back. XD

I just can't figure out why she had to hurry to the bus stop to catch the bus but then rides in her friends car. And then she's already partying in her friends' car and trying to figure out which seat to take when she is already seated and the rest of the car is full. THERE ARE MAJOR CONTINUITY ERRORS HERE.

Well, the 'album(s)' version of this thread didn't go very far. But I'm sure this one will remain close to the top, seeing as how people listen to single songs a lot more than they listen to albums (the impatient beings).

Well, I guess I'll have to post the last couple of songs I listened to last night, which were:

Iron Maiden - "Invaders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63gdZAsl62E)" - 6.5/10
This is quite frankly one of their worst songs (discounting their B-sides). The riff is bland, the chorus is ugly and sounds like it was thought up in about 30 seconds, and the only thing that saves it from being a five (out of ten) is the soloing in the latter half of the song. If I wanted to turn somebody off from Maiden, I'd show them this song.

Iron Maiden - "Children of the Damned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b91rSw4xuYY)" - 9.5/10
Unlike "Invaders", it sounds like some time and thought actually went into writing and constructing this song. The riff is memorable (unlike in "Invaders"), the chorus is actually pleasant to listen to (unlike in "Invaders"), and even the soloing from "Invaders" - one of the song's positive aspects - is outdone by the solos in this song. Overall, this song is one of the best tracks on what is otherwise a pretty mediocre album.

Fire - Lupe Fiasco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH4Jl7q1UOw) - 8/10 I'm a sucker for rock/ hip-hop crossovers :D

Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v_4O44sfjM) - 9/10 Not usually one for ballads, but I really like this!

L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCHzicKq3W4) - 6/10 Fun and catchy, but nothing special.

Shadowland - The Cast of The Lion King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0xU6Pu3ifw) 10/10 I can rarely resist showtunes, but this has to be my favourite from The Lion King :)

Open Arms - Elbow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRFqUlRelN0) - 7/10 Only heard this because of Comic Relief, but I quite like it. A tad too sentimental though

If I wanted to turn somebody off from Maiden, I'd show them this song.

I'd pick anything from X-Factor for that purpose, it's probably the most depressing album I own, and I own Automatic For the People.

Also, for my money, Gangland's a worse song

I actually liked 'X Factor'; I think it's a pretty good album that's unjustly ripped on. But I do think that a lot of the songs on there could have been a whole lot more if the guys had just spent a bit more time cultivating them. It's like, with each of the songs, they wrote some good material, but didn't bother to put in the time or effort to improve them or make them into something great.

Also, for my money, Gangland's a worse song

Yeah, that song's not great either. "Gangland"'s another of the uninspired, boring songs that occupy the majority of the 'Number of the Beast' album - undoubtedly their most overrated album, if not one of the most overrated albums in metal. However, "Gangland" doesn't quite get up my nose as much as "Invaders" does. The only true moment of brilliance on the album is "Hallowed...", and "Children..." on a good day. But overall, pretty much every other song on the album is quite mediocre.

INVADDERRS, DOO-A-DO-DO-DOO!!

...thanks.

I say that would be Mother of Mercy on The Final Frontier. I personally like the song but when I showed the lyrics to my friend, he was all "Breath of fire? Do they still use that? LOL I'll pass".

No, the lyrics weren't exactly great on that track: rhyming a word with itself ('done' with 'done'), rhyming 'fire' with 'desire' (my most hated metal cliche), including the line "Rivers flow with blood", rhyming 'crying' with 'dying', and the one you mentioned. It's guilty of a lot of lyrical cliches and failures.

The rest of the songs from the album have pretty decent lyrics, though, like those in "Coming Home".

Iron Maiden - "Mother Russia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsNo0WaqJH4&feature=related)" - 9.5/10
This is easily one of the best tracks off of 'No Prayer for the Dying' - an album that I don't actually consider to be that bad. And, if I'm going to be completely honest, I think I get more listening pleasure out of it than I do from 'Number of the Beast'. I think this is one of the best 'NPftD' tracks for two reasons - a) Dickinson's voice is less scratchy/screechy on this occasion, and b) Maiden really have managed to create that (almost)neo-classical metal sound on this track, which is something that I noticed a lot of on the 'Dance of Death' album (which is one of their best albums, in my opinion).

Stuart Chatwood - "Introducing the Prince (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGEYVT2ygFw)" - 9/10
This isn't the best or most exciting track on the 'Prince of Persia: Sands of Time' soundtrack, but it's still pretty darn good to listen to.

Michael Land - "Jazzy Voodoo in the Swamp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFAUkHJ2P_o)" - 10/10
This piece of music is cooler than anything I've listened to tonight, and it's cooler than anything you've listened to tonight.

Listening to Within Temptation's new album for the first time right now, and it's good so far. The symphonic sound is kind of shoved into the background, though, and that's disappointing. There's also a distinct lack of the softer songs that they do so well.

Sex in the air, I don't care, I love the smell of it
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But chains and whips excite me

Maybe i'm a prude, but this is a poor state of affairs. There's a few smells that fly around during coitus but I doubt any of them would make there way onto a Magic Tree air freshener in someones car.

The whole chains and whips thing has to be the most tired and cliched example of sadomasichism going about, I was uttering phrases like that when I was a young warthog about to start secondary school, except thery were always in relation to someones mum of course.

Don't even start me on what the song actually sounds like the lazy uninspired production is just bland city.

Iron Maiden - "When the Wild Wind Blows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHg9PJc1Nds)" - 10/10
And with this, I've finally concluded my chronological listening of Maidens entire catalogue. And on what better note to do so? This song is easily within my top 5 Maiden tracks, and one of my top 10 tracks of all time. This is probably one of the most profound things Steve Harris has ever written; the lyrics are great and deep, and the music at the beginning end of the track is hauntingly beautiful. I really love this track, and if 'The Final Frontier' were to be Maiden's last album, then this would be the perfect swansong.

Nine Inch Nails - "Mr. Self Destruct (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7_1o-fuRAQ)" - 9/10
Good stuff, good stuff. Not the best track on 'The Downward Spiral' (that honor goes to "Hurt"), but still pretty darn good. Great lyrics too.

Alestorm - "Death Before the Mast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yKFQap_N9g&feature=fvwrel)" - 10/10
I can't not love this stuff. I love pirates and love metal. So when the two are combined, along with some good songwriting, and a certain degree of intentional goofiness, it just results in an incredibly likeable form of music. This track here is one of my favourites from 'Captain Morgan's Revenge'.

Dream Theater - "Peruvian Skies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfCM0WsAIHI)" - 10/10
A somewhat uneventful first half sets up for a second half of amazing Deep-Purple-meets-Metallica riffage. This is one of the best tracks off of one of Dream Theater's worst albums.

Rebecca Black - "Friday" - http://www.robertchristgau.com/icon/x2.gif
It just doesn't get worse than this; this is just the pinnacle of crappiness in 'music'. I forced myself to listen to the whole of it yesterday (which was Tuesday) and really couldn't believe just how incredibly awful this track was. I practically tortured myself. How the hell do people like this get recording deals? She sounds like a horse with a cold, and her lyrics read like the diary of a nine-year-old girl (but in present tense, and not as well written). But apart from this track featuring the worst lyrics I've ever heard and some of the worst vocals I've ever heard on record, it features almost every trait that mainstream music is guilty of these days: grinding repetition, generic music, the token black rapper half-way through the song, and complete lack of originality both in the composition and in the choice of subject matter. Almost every track in the charts is guilty of these things, it's just that they've been amplified in this track and have become blatantly obvious. But the thing is that if it weren't for the over-descriptive, terrible lyrics and awful vocal delivery, the masses probably wouldn't pick up on these aforementioned problems, and would probably just swallow it like all the other rubbish that's fed to them. Absolutely no thought has gone into creating this 'song', and it frustrates me that talentless, brainless people can put some hollow, meaningless lyrics over the top of a generic background piece of music and still gain more recognition and success than somebody who can create the most thoughtful, articulate, profound poetry and integrate it with a cleverly composed that complements it perfectly. That's crap; that's not how things should work. But hey, I guess that's just how things go. The industry has been like this for a while now, but I think that it's reached a new low. Sure, Miss Black has been ripped on quite a bit and has met some serious criticism, but whether her music is acknowledged as being bad or not is beside the point; she still got a recording deal and she's still getting attention, which is all any artist needs.

Now I know why I usually avoid mainstream music altogether, but my curiosity got the best of me on this occasion.

Jonathan Coulton - "Still Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI)" - 9/10
I heard it for the first time after finishing 'Portal' for the first time last night. I was surprised at how much I liked it. It's incredibly catchy, I think that it's well-written and those lyrics are smart and pretty funny. Overall, I think that the song suits 'Portal' really well, and it was a nice way of capping off a great gaming experience.

Laurie Anderson - "Another Day In America (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xBUXTVVDDw)"
I don't feel I have the right to give this a score, since I don't think I fully understand this form of music. It's more just poetry read out over the top of a very dull, obscure, but great piece of music. But I do very much like the poetry; the words being said are rather strange, but understandable, and are hauntingly beautiful in a way, and very philosophical. These elements just seem to come together and form something that is enjoyable to listen to, and something that I can easily listen to for a long time. I don't know exactly what I find appealing in this track, but I do know that I enjoy it immensely.

Primus - "Tommy the Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKB_cH8Sv1g)" - 9/10
Damn these guys are strange, but I love them. I first heard them about a month ago at Soundwave (music festival). I'd never even heard them prior to this, and I was relatively blown away by their performance. I was just so impressed with their musicianship, mostly Claypool's bass-work, which was some of the best I'd ever seen. This was one of the songs they played in their set, and it was one that impressed me the most. Luckily, it's almost just as impressive on-CD as it was live. Like any Primus track (well, all of the Primus track that I've heard), there's some incredibly catchy, funky, zany music backed up by great musicianship and instrumentation. Primus sucks!

Dream Theater - "In the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaGzdOg6EIY)Name of God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAsVYKEAjY8&feature=related)" - 10/10
A truly amazing, monumental progressive metal epic! At over 14 minutes, this track holds my attention for the entirety of it. Beginning with the great opening riff, the song goes through many stages and transitions that range from a slow, powerful and anthemic chorus, to Metallica-esque, guitar driven sections, to quiet jams, to a ridiculously fast guitar solo, to an epic(for want of better word) outtro in which DT have integrated an old war hymn. I love everything about this track; every minute of it; every aspect of it; every section, whether it be heavy, soft, fast or slow. It's a very well-written song, musically.

Also, another thing that must be commended is the lyrics of this track, which deal with the topic of religious corruption. They're quite articulate, and very memorable (well, for me, anyway). And they're delivered greatly by LaBrie, who gives a terrific vocal performance on this occasion.

Bwahahahahahaa!! Excellent stuff!! My tea went down the wrong way when he started on Princess Di. But brings home a very valid point, you don't get your wings in the grave!!

Great, isn't it. I will admit that I found some of it to be in poor taste, but there's no arguing that the song itself is very funny and clever. And the message presented is undeniably true.

Wow, somebody actually took the time to read through my rant :D. But yeah, it is quite awful. I think the critics are right in labeling it the worst song of all time.

Haha! That version of great :). Not the fact that it actually sounds very good (it does sound better, though), but, as you said, because it's a lot more fun to watch. And the fact that it's taking the piss, mostly, and not trying to be taken seriously.

Can't say I'm the biggest fan of fishing, but that song's pretty cool.

It's funny how we associate music with certain seasons, weather, times of the day, etc. I associate classic rock with summer, mostly, and metal music with winter, but have no idea why. I guess it depends on the environment in which you're used to hearing that music the most, or perhaps the environment in which you first heard that music. Don't know why I'm talking about this - just some thoughts and observations.

Joe Perry Project - "South Station Blues" - 7/10
It's not a bad rock song, but like so much of Joe Perry's material (especially the stuff he sings on), it is very bland.

- "Discount Dogs" - 8.5/10
This is one of the better songs of his. I don't know whether it's the fact that he's not singing, or that it might just be a better-written song, but this song seems to have a lot more life to it. It's probably one of the best 'Project songs.

- "Shooting Star" - 9/10
I actually like this one even more than "Discount Dogs", which simply doesn't make any sense because Joe's singing on this one. But, admittedly, he puts in a slightly more emphatic vocal performance than usual - he doesn't sound too bored. Also, it's one of the few songs of his that actually has a proper, likeable riff and enjoyable chorus.

- "Rockin' Train" - 5.5/10
The band's worst. It's just annoying, unimaginative crap. It's also far too repetitious; it has no business being 6 minutes long.

Overall, the Joe Perry Project were a decent rock band/side project, but they never managed to reach the level of quality that Aerosmith managed to reach.

Nightwish - "Poet and the Pendulum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-CwaQGMnJ4)" - 10/10
This song is absolutely terrific; one of my all-time favourites, actually. It goes through so many stages during its 14-minute running time - from quiet, soothing melody, to the most powerful metal riffs you'll hear, and everything in between. And every moment of the track is enjoyable; the song reaches its climax at around the half-way mark, but never do I feel like skipping to it, because every piece of music prior to it is great, quality music. Like a lot of Nightwish's material, there's certainly some cheesiness in the mix (most of it as a result of the spoken word parts), but I no longer really care about music being 'cheesy'. It was actually as a result of hearing this track that I stopped caring about 'cheesiness' in music, because this song showed me that you will miss out on some of the world's best music if you allow trivial crap to get in the way of your personal enjoyment. Anyway, this song is symphonic metal at its best; it's a truly epic symphonic metal masterpiece :).

Joe Satriani - "Light Years Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unPTwg4Z5Ik)" - 9/10
It's a standard Satriani rock song: a bunch of impressive soloing over the top of several highly enjoyable riffs.

Sorry to double-post, but... I don't really care, in this instance; I like this thread.

John Powell - "This Is Berk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ei2HSGeLHo)" - 10/10
This track is terrific; every stage of it is highly enjoyable. It's just one of many great tracks from the 'How to Train Your Dragon' soundtrack, which I should probably buy very soon.

Black Stone Cherry - "Yeah Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjX1e3bwLpc)" - 9/10
It's pretty retarded lyrically, but it's a fun track; a great, powerful, modern southern rock song. I'm not sure why this song wasn't included on the standard version of the album.

Jonathan Coulton - "Want You Gone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVVZaZ8yO6o)" - 9/10
As good as "Still Alive".

John Waite - "Shadows of Love" - 6.5/10
Reasonably enjoyable to listen to, but completely uninspired, unoriginal and unmemorable. This is one of those songs that I know I'll only ever listen to once and never again.

Jorn - "Song For Ronnie James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVibU7DICtM)" - 10/10
Jorn is the master of balance in this song. He's created a track that aims to be both a badass metal song and a sentimental ballad, and he pulls it off really well without making the song sound confused and directionless. It's a great metal track and a perfect tribute to Mr. Dio. This song was written prior to his death (and prior to his diagnosis, I think), but was released just after his death; it's a shame he never go to hear it :(.

Judas Priest - "Worth Fighting For (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4fqsvciuFU)" - 10/10
This is just one of those songs that is just faultless. It's one of my favourite 'Priest songs of all time and one of my favourite rock songs of all time. It's very well-written and very well put-together. The melody is great, the riff is memorable, and Halford's vocals are great (because this one is actually within his range), and those layered vocals//harmonies give a lot of depth and texture to the song.

I hope Serj stays on this musical path for a long time. System was a great band, but his solo work is miles above anything he did in those days. This song (hell, this entire album) is a fantastic example of that. It's not exactly the deepest political commentary in the world, but it comes from a sincere place, and Serj can paint some extremely interesting verbal imagery.

Doctor? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZs_zg6HHxs) by Orbital live at the 2004 Glastonbury Festival. I was there and it was fantastic, not just this track but the whole set.

9/10 for the normal track, 10/10 for the live version (based on being there)

That got me reminiscing about the 2nd time I went to Glasto, in 2007 with one of the highlights being the Chemical Brothers on the Sunday night (exact same slot as Orbital 3 years previously). Here's them with Star Guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4R7vBB6KPk).

8/10 for the actual song, but again 10/10 for the live experience.

I seem to be missing the 'hilarity' in "Jack Sparrow". I mean, it's light-hearted, it has some semi-funny moments, but I honestly can't see how anyone can laugh out loud at it. I dunno, maybe I'm just different, but this brand of humour fails to appeal to me.

Judas Priest - "Better By You, Better Than Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqAPVB4u9Zs)" - 9/10
A good cover; they breathed a lot of life into the song, I think. This is probably one of the highlights of the 'Stained Class' album. Halford sounds great on it (as his voice was still strong back in those years), the soloing is really good (though this can be said about any 'Priest song), and the recording is really good for the time period. Also, I managed to listen to the whole song without killing myself, which is always a positive.

Steven Tyler - "(It) Feels So Good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9h6Ug6snVE)" - 4/10
Oh, now this is just crap. I love Steven Tyler, I love Aerosmith, but this song is just terrible; I stopped listening half-way through.

Black Label Society - "Parade of the Dead (Unplugged) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3M7DGYGrJ8)" - 9/10
Musically, I absolutely love what they've done with it, but I find that Zakk's vocals on this track don't really sit well in the context of the track. It's not as though it's a bad vocal performance, it's just a little too over-the-top for an acoustic rendition, and it sounds a little unsuited and out-of-place. And that's the reason why I can't give this a 10. But, apart from that, I'm really impressed with what they've transformed this BLS tune into.

Epica - "Fools of Damnation: The Embrace That Smothers, Pt. 9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csYBwZPCleY)" - 10/10
Okay, well, that was amazing... on almost every level. An incredible display of musicianship and songwriting; this song is packed with great riffs, arrangements, compositions and performances. I have no criticisms for this song, not even the scream/growl sections (which is something I'm usually not too fond of in metal music).

Rush - "Cold Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_saheuIIjQ)" - 10/10
I really love this song; it's one of the best from the 'Counterparts' album. It's not as though it's the most exciting song, or the most impressive song musically, but it's just a really well-written song. It's very catchy, very memorable, and perfectly constructed. The verses are solid, and the chorus is even better, which is how every standard rock song should be. This song feels very complete, as though the band took their time in writing it and piecing it together; it achieves its full potential and is the best it can be. It's also one of those tracks that actually makes me feel something, rather than simply being impressive or 'sounding really good'; it actually appeals to me on a whole different level.

- "Double Agent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6D4mxbUnmg)" - 10/10
This song is also terrific, but for different reasons than "Cold Fire". "Cold Fire"s great because it's a consistent, smooth, perfect standard rock song. "Double Agent" is less of an accessible, mainstream-sounding song; it's a lot more ambitious and experimental, featuring a number of different riffs, styles and sounds which are all thrown together into one song and manage to miraculously stick together perfectly in order to create one brilliant rock song. It's as though Rush had three half-finished compositions, and thought "screw finishing all of these off; let's chuck 'em all together and finish just one song instead," and as I've said, the final product is nothing short of excellent. Also, like "Cold Fire", this track speaks to me and makes me feel something.

These two tracks came as a pleasant surprise for me. I had originally bought 'Counterparts' for the tracks "Cut to the Chase" and "Nobody's Hero". Never would I have thought that the album would feature two tracks that far surpass those.

Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes(album)

One release removed from what fans called the "sell out" album(songs became shorter and more chorus oriented), Iced Earth, lead by guitarist Jon Schaffer, shot back with this masterpiece. While this album did contain their big ballad Watching Over Me(about a childhood friend of Jon's who died), it also included their heaviest song to date, Disciples Of The Lie(referring to disgraced catholic priests). This production which concludes with three interconnecting songs subtitled the Something Wicked Trilogy(an original story by Jon somewhat resembling "The Omen"), is strong start to finish; held together, in no small part, by the powerful and ranged vocals of, then singer, Matt Barlow(now retired).

I would do well to point out that the band has played 10/13(one of the excluded being an instrumental) of this album's tracks live and still play 6 regularly, thirteen years later.

The recipe for greatness in Something Wicked This Way Comes: A solid base of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest; a dash of Slayer; a pinch of 80's KISS. Mix well. Bake. Ice with a thin layer of vintage Black Sabbath. Enjoy.

Just listen to this stuff! That's just freaking amazing stuff, I think. It sounds just as good as any of Zimmer's other material (heck, that's probably because it is some of Zimmer's other material), and that acoustic guitar really gives the music a nice, new little twist. There are a few other tracks from the 'On Stranger Tides' soundtrack that were really impressive; this is just one that stood out.

KISS - "Unholy" - 9.5/10
I've returned to this video multiple times after Johro linked it here. I've just kept wanting to hear it; what a great track! I also listened to "Heart of Chrome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1ovuI7I3jY)" (10/10) and this was even better. I have to be in a very specific mood for ambient music, but when it clicks, it clicks HARD, as it did here. I had never really listened to Buckethead/Death Cube K until last night, and I think I've been missing out.

Billy Elliot: The Musical - 'He Could be a Star' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7B4V6bEvec&feature=related) - 8.5/10

I'm a sucker for any musical, but I actually had low hopes for Billy Elliot. A lot of the songs proved me wrong though, this being the prime example. It's full of emotion, but the emotion feels real rather than over-the-top like in many musicals. It's sad yet uplifting at the same time. Plus - Geordie accents! :D

WhoCares - "Out of My Mind" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2vxQApPg40)" - 10/10
I first listened to this about 3 weeks ago, after reading about this band project on ClassicRockMagazine.com. When I decided to go check them out, I was expecting mediocrity; so often, when amazing musicians come together from different bands, they fail to achieve anything of high quality. In fact, the idea of supergroups such as this just comes across as cheezy to me for some reason, and I'm not fond of the whole idea. Usually the final product is a song (or songs) that are only really of 'filler' quality. So I wasn't expecting much from this song, but I was surprised to actually be presented with something of brilliance - an amazing, Black Sabbath-y epic with some great riffs, solos and overall musicianship. The song actually wouldn't feel out of place on Heaven & Hell's self-titled album, given the dark nature of it. This track is very atmospheric, very entertaining to listen to, and just a very good song. I was pleased to find that the musicians involved actually managed to pull together to create something worthy of their respective statuses, rather than just a cheap, money-grabbing knock-off that was thrown together in 5 minutes.

"Holy Water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQYjEa3FdUo)" - 10/10
Also a terrific song with a great riff and a really nice chorus. This sound of this track bears a closer resemblance to Deep Purple's musical style this time around, with less of a Black Sabbath influence. It a little like Deep Purple's slower songs, such as (to give a recent example) "Walk On", but with some heavier riffing, and a more up-beat sound overall. It's great stuff, really; if it were to have appeared on one of DP's albums, it would have been a definite stand-out.

Domain - "Last Days of Utopia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qN9sHGEPdE)" - 8/10
Amazing guitar-work, and some great musicianship, but the structure of the song is just a little too cliche and overdone in the world of power metal. Maybe I'd appreciate it a bit more if I were listening to it through something other than a 360p YouTube video.

Pride & Glory - "The Chosen One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8WPcAfDWa0)" - 10/10
Possibly my favourite song of theirs. It's a very well-written track, and I really like the influence that the orchestra has on the song overall.

Yeah, about that... their lead singer, Peter Steele, did indeed die last year. :( The cruel irony of it was, he had just started to get his personal life back together and away from his addictions.

I've stepped away from rap for a few years now, but I've always enjoyed Eminem, and I decided to catch up on him recently. ... Holy shit. This song is fantastic. (and it turns out Rihanna is actually a pretty good singer)

Well, the whole album is fantastic, but I'm not going to do a track-by-track. I'll just say that LTWYL and You're Never Over are outstanding, and the rest are damn good too. Heck of a reintroduction to the genre.

"Mary Ann (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIN_TRa-UJ4)" - Macabre

Has to be one of their best clean vocal songs. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a great song though. The solo was off from the usual pace. The riffs were forgettable, but this band has always been more about the subject matter than the music itself. I must admit that I do have a crush on the new album. It's been 7 years since the last one(well 8 from now, but the new one came out late last year)...and it's pretty good. It's no DAHMER, but it's good.

:
"Now the rainman gave me two cures
Then he said, "Jump right in"
The one was Texas medicine
The other was just railroad gin
And like a fool I mixed them
And it strangled up my mind
And now, people just get uglier
And I have no sense of time
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again."

Not even really a song but more a call to arms. Creative imagery and wordplay combined with a marching drumbeat and melancholy violin lines make this a piece that really sticks with you. Somebody also made a nice typography thingy for it in the youtube link. Not what i'd have envisioned personally but it's still pretty bloomin' snazzy. Check it out.

Might I ask why? I thought it was great :).

Cultural gap here methinks, I loved it long time :) Bar the guitar solos which were identical to the original and didn't really fit the Bossa Nova vibe, plus playing them in clean exposes how much classy distortion and reverb gloss up everything in lead guitar :p

Dream Theater - "On the Backs of Angels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oasnbzEMV08)" - 10/10
I must have listened to this song over 30 times by now, which is not like me at all. Usually I try to refrain from overplaying songs, or listening to them multiple times in succession, because I like to 'preserve' them, in a sense, so that I can still appreciate them for a long time to come. However, on this occasion I've simply been unable to help myself. This song has everything that I would expect from a good Dream Theater song. Heck, it has everything that I'd want from a good progressive rock/metal song; it has reasonably complex structures, impressive playing and musicianship, great soloing, and a number of different sounds and odd compositions.
The funny thing is, while the track has all of these elements, it manages to also be one of Dream Theater's more organized and song-orientated tracks. It seems to have balanced all of the progressive aspects out with hooks, melodic choruses, welcome repetition, and memorable moments. Ultimately, this makes it an ideal single, as it satisfies the more hardcore DT fans, whilst also being accessible enough for those new to the band.
Overall, it's a very good progressive rock song which should be heard by all fans of the genre by everyone.

Terrific songwriting backed but by amazing musicianship and technical proficiency. This song is a perfect blend of old school prog (from the likes of Yes and King Crimson), modern prog (a la Dream Theater) and Deep Purple-style classic rock. This song is insanely good.

Yeah, I sort of noticed things going in this direction as well. But, then again, I have posted some ratings/reviews of songs which I've hated, and some which I've been indifferent towards (but the latter to a lesser degree, though). I guess I will often talk about songs that I love because they're mostly the ones which I have anything interesting to say about them.

Overall, maybe a 7. For a non-Steve Perry Journey song, a strong 8...maybe 9. Classic sound...sounds straight out of the 80s Journey. I'm a fairly big Steve Perry fan and I, unfortunately, cannot ignore this song existing. I wish he did sing it. Track by track first impressions of I'm With You by RHCP

Monarchy of Roses - Strong start to the album. Nothing amazing, but it's certainly unique and funk-ful. Klinghoffer really knows his way around a guitar.

Factory of Faith - Anthony's "rapping" is as weak as it's ever been here, but the chorus is very catchy, and that bassline... oh man.

Brendan's Death Song - I've always been a fan of RHCP's softer songs, and tracks like this are why. Simplistic, but with a big emotional impact. Chad, for once, actually carries most of that impact here due to some great drumwork. I'm really liking how this album is mixed so far. Everyone's equally easy to hear.

Ethiopia - That's some funk-ass funk right there, at least until the chorus. This sounds like a Stadium Arcadium b-side, which (to me) is a FANTASTIC thing. Instant favorite.

Annie Wants A Baby - This is going to be one of those songs I like at first, then grow to be obsessed with. I can just feel it. Also, if the last song was a Stadium Arcadium b-side, this is easily a By The Way b-side that's been remixed during the Stadium Arcadium sessions. (sorry that these descriptions are getting more and more vague)

Look Around - Anthony's rapping again... much more listenably this time. But "put my peg into your square"? I thought we were past this, guys. Ah well. Extremely catchy song, but much weaker than the last few.

Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie - Damn, I love this song. Anybody who's reading this has already heard it, so... moving on.

Did I Let You Know - Hey, Josh is singing in the background! And he's not bad! This is RHCP fooling around outside their genre again, and it's great. (Right after I type that, Anthony says "I like you cheeky/so Mozambique-y". GODDAMMIT, ANTHONY. NOT COOL.)

Goodbye Hooray - Heavier song, seems designed to show off Josh. And my god, does he take advantage of it. If they never told anybody that Frusciante left, you'd think he was still there. Wow.

Happiness Loves Company - As the title indicates, this definitely has a happy feel to it. Appears to be single-bait, but in a good way. Fun little ditty.

Police Station - A lot of mellow, some heavier sections, what seems to be a piano (but after Wet Sand, I'll never make that assumption again)... extremely enjoyable.

Even You Brutus? - Oh, damn. YES. Just... just listen to it. Go on.

Meet Me At The Corner - Back to mellow, which I normally love, and this IS a great song... but after "Even You Brutus?" it sounds limp. Bad track placement.

Dance, Dance, Dance - It's a song. ... Okay, there are some good sections in it... but me no gusta. Shame that the album has to go out like this.

So yeah, I'm not a music critic, obviously, and I haven't let this album digest yet, but at first blush I love it. It's not their greatest effort, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse, what with expectations being through the roof. I just hope die-hard Frusciante devotees give it a chance.

My Dad just Downloaded the New Muppets Cover Album and I figured I'd take advantage of this opportunity to review a brand new album.

The Muppet Show Theme- OK Go
An upbeat, techno-esque cover. It gets a little over-complicated at points, but overall it maintains the cheery and simplistic attitude of the original.
8/10

The Rainbow Connection- Weezer ft. Hayley Williams
Rivers Cuomo and Hayley Williams, singing a flawlessly beautiful and calm duet version of a cherished childhood memory. What more could I ask for?
10/10

Mahna Mahna- The Fray
A classic Muppets song that everybody knows. This cover treats the original version with the respect it deserves.
9/10

Movin' Right Along- Alkaline Trio
This cover version treats the folky tune with a bit of fast paced rock and roll, while still capturing the humor of the original. Surprisingly enough, it WORKS.
8/10

Our World- My Morning Jacket
While I've sadly never heard the original, This song is a fairly good version. Throw in a bit of background singing and we've got a solid cover.
7/10

Halfway Down The Stairs- Amy Lee
A very somber cover of a song that was fairly somber to begin with. The bits of techno bleep just seem thrown in, but it's still pretty good.
8/10

Mr. Bassman- Sonde Lerche
A bass-driven song accompanied by guitar and drums. Simple and down to earth, capturing the spirit of the original easily.
9/10

The Wishing Song- The Airborne Toxic Event
The rock vibe kinda subtracts from the somber mood that this song was originally supposed to convey, but it still conveys the same message.
7/10

Night Life- Brandon Saller
A hard rock cover of a normal rock song, but it still manages to please me. This is the kind of song that would get any kid into the hard rock genre.
9/10

Bein' Green- Andrew Bird
At first, a surprisingly downbeat version of what is supposed to be an uplifting song. Afterwards, it's a bit more upbeat, and overall, it's a nice song.
8/10

I Hope That Something Better Comes Along- Matt Nathanson
A good piano-driven cover of the classic "Why Bother with Women" message. Loses some of the humor in between the verses, but still good enough to please.
8/10

I'm Going to Go Back There Someday- Rachel Yamagata
Another piano-driven cover with a background chorus. It captures the mood of the original almost perfectly and serves an ideal end to the album.
9/10

The Album overall:
While I want to give it a higher score, this album just didn't do everything I expected to see. There was little material that actually surprised me and nothing really jumped out. On the other hand, it's a fairly good album, with plenty of artists giving their own unique takes on classic tunes. So...
8/10 No more, no less.

Yeah, technically it's good and rather impressive, but the song itself is just doing nothing for me. It's a bunch of impressive, virtuosic instrumentation, but it's played over the top of some very bland and lifeless compositions. For me personally, this is just very unexciting music. I'm not giving my songs scores anymore.

I love this song foor it's wit, sarcasm and the way Newman can turn a subject on its heads with a clever turn of phrase.

It's also the only time i've ever heard this particular view of black segregation in America expressed, to express it so eloquently and to music is testament to the genius of one of America's greatest living songwriters.

Couple all that up with Newman's distinctive foggy vocals and Piano work that I can only describe as Americana and you have a little slice of genius in just over three minutes.

Glad to see this thread's still alive!!

Been doing a YouTube Marathon of this music group called "Your Favorite Martian," so here's my two cents on some of their first few singles.

My Balls- Has a nice catchy beat and hilariously awesome lyrics. An excellent start to this band's career.

Zombie Love Song- A nice satire of both zombie movies and overly sappy love songs.

Bottles of Beer- An upbeat and catchy reimagining of the classic time-passing song.

Club Villain- A excellent beat and plenty of clever and imaginative lyrics.

The Stereotypes Song- A slight misstep in my opinion, but still pretty creative and funny.

The Unofficial Smithers Love Song- Who doesn't love a good reinterpretation of a popular TV show? Answer: Nobody.

Orphan Tears ft. Wax- The trippiest and funniest party song I've ever heard in my life.

Mr. Douchebag- An excellent slam on the Jersey Shore phenomenon. What's not to like?

Transphobic Techno- Kind of annoying in all of it's repetition. Not much to say otherwise.

Grandma Got a Facebook- A clever situational song about how your grandma hits on your friends.

I love this group and their hilarious songs, if you couldn't tell. Check them out here. (http://www.youtube.com/user/Yourfavoritemartian)

And no, I am in no way involved with this group.

Megadeth - "The Scorpion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fXeahjkjoo)" - 10/10
I've only just gotten into Megadeth, and I'm wondering why the heck I didn't give them any chance earlier. This song in particular has been one that's impressed me a whole lot. Terrifically powerful, suitably eerie and dark, and also extremely catchy. It's a fantastic mixture of great songwriting, competent musicianship, good production choices, and relatively imaginative lyrics. It's original, it's enjoyable, it's thematically rich, and it's pretty much all I could ask for in a hard rock song.

It's just one example of how Megadeth are so much more musically articulate than most other bands of their genre or style.

Also, it's in the same vain as a lot of Alice Cooper's stuff from his 'Brutal Planet' and 'Dragontown' albums (at least I think so), and that can only be a good thing, since those albums are two of Alice's greatest (but most underappreciated) musical achievements.

Tasteless guitar wank
Hah, yes, that basically sums it up :)

why do bands do this? Don't play something just because you can, if you play something it'd best have a point other than hoping I go "Oh wow! You're soooo good at guitar"
Because that's obviously all the band cares about - showing off their 'chops'. And, ultimately, there's going to always be a crowd who will lap this stuff up merely because they're suckers for soulless speed and technicality.

How did I miss this? Goodness doodo came out with some twaddle!!

Megadeth really are the best of the big 4.

Metallica used to be pretty good, but then they lost something over the years.

Slayer stubbornly refuses to branch out, making most of their songs sound the same.

Anthrax are getting better, but they aren't as good.

Also a great song, which I've actually heard a few times before. But I will say that 'Endgame' did produce some better tracks than this one, such as "44 Minutes" and the other single - "The Right to Go Insane".

Still, though, this one kicks some major arse, and is better listening for those who prefer classic thrash metal to hard rock.

This one I've heard as well; it's an absolute classic. My first experience with it, though, was during my Nightwish phase (which I'm still in, come to think of it), when I heard one of their live cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5aGTwRkYSI)s of the track.

From there, I sought out the original. So that was one of the few avenues that led to me coming to enjoy Megadeth's music. It's strange the ways you stumble upon music nowadays, in the age of the internet; the process of finding new music is very different to how it once was.

BTW In my mind I think Carl Palmer was one of the best if not the best rock drummer out there (but that's mainly after watching his solo during the 1st impression on youtube:)

every song is 10/10 eh? okay, I'm hitting random and rating whatever it is.

"Sold My Soul" - Mercyful Fate - 9

Okay... This isn't the best song off of "9", the (currently)last MF album. Decent track mainly due to the great guitar work. Not a whole lot to say about it. Mid-ranged lead locals with backing falsettos...typical of King Diamond. I'd give it a 6/10. Not really memorable, but I don't feel the urge to skip it either. Final note? If you're going to put on anything from 9, go for "Church Of Saint Anne" or "Burn In Hell" instead.

Bad Salad - "Nemesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5RQFJwU5CU&ob=av3e)" - 8.5/10

I originally found out about these guys as a result of hearing/watching some of their Dream Theater covers on YouTube, which, I must say, impressed me quite hugely; their playing ability is very good; as musicians/instrumentalists, they are highly capable. And, judging by "Nemesis" it seems they're quite adept songwriters as well, if not fully developed yet. There are some nice melodies and interesting arrangements scattered throughout the song, and it's mostly all enjoyable. Though I will say that some of the music does feel a little redundant; there's a lot of fat that could probably be cut out without damaging the song itself. Because, even as a prog fan, I do feel that it drags on unnecessarily for a bit long. I mean, if the actual compositions and riffs were a little more entertaining and varied, then the song's length would probably be justified, but, as it is, no - not quite.

But, in saying this, things really do pick up in the last 3 minutes; in fact, they pick up in a big way. Bad Salad lay down some riffs that just simply pump, soloing over the top as they subtly and smoothly transition between them. And it's not wanky soloing either; it's technically impressive, sure, but it's done in a way which works to benefit the song, and doesn't come at its expense. In fact, it's so integral to the music that I actually hesitate to even call it 'soloing'.

I could listen to those last three minutes over and over again; it's heavy prog rock brilliance that I think even Dream Theater would be somewhat proud of. In a way, that's the pay-off for sitting through the song's 11 minutes. You get a somewhat lackluster (but still enjoyable) 8 minutes of music, and then 3 minutes of superb music.

So, overall, it's a good prog song with some flaws, but it builds to a climax and ends on a high, leaving me wanting to listen to it again, which is what a songwriter should generally want to try to achieve. I look forward to hearing more from this band, as they'll undoubtedly only improve over the coming years, as they develop and cultivate their sound.

Edit: My gosh, I go on sometimes, don't I?

Deep Purple - "Don't Let Go" - 6/10
There's nothing in this song which really grabs my ear. It's probably the least entertaining track off of the 'Rapture of the Deep' album. It sports a pretty unexciting main riff, an uninteresting beat, and is just your stock standard rock song overall. In short, it's a filler. But, it has got a somewhat enjoyable groove, and some nice piano soloing late in the song, which gives it at least some life and character.

Deep Purple - "Back to Back" - 6.9/10
Back to back fillers, is what we have here. This track follows on from "Don't Let Go", and is basically the same deal. With a slightly more flavorsome riff, this track is marginally better than "DLG", but is also just a bit of a drag, with several interesting moments just lifting it out of plain mediocrity.

Deep Purple - "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" - 9/10
With a faster tempo, upbeat vibe, interesting riffing and, most importantly, some actual balls, this song is a hugely refreshing listen after sitting through the last two lackluster tracks. Still, I don't feel that the track is quite all it can be, and it doesn't quite meet the same standard as other songs off the album such as the title track and "Wrong Man".

I listened to the new Dropkick Murphys album. They've only went and pulled an American Idiot style concept album, i'll need another proper listen before I can give n opinion.

It's odd seeing aul boys in work saying they like this band and stuff, they just exploded the second Shipping Up to Boston was in The Departed.

The Plough (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RegvoFIVJsM) by The Divine Comedy

One of those songs wot does tell a story, this one the remarkable tale of a farmboy who leaves to make it in the city, but a series of disillusioning events lead him to a dramatic lasty resort.

Richly scored, well written, suitably sombre and dramatic when it needs to be. I give it five eggs.

I agree.

Out of the Raptures of the Deep alone, I like:

- Money Talks
- Wrong Man
- Raptures of the Deep
- Clearly Quite Absurd (a bit cheesy, but its not horrible)
- Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
- Junkyard Blues

Thats 6 good songs out of 10, and thats definately not a fail in my book!

I agree, with all of this... except for the absence of "Before Time Began" from that list; that song's truly superb.

And I actually don't consider "Clearly Quite Absurd" all that cheesy; I think it actually manages to avoid that label, personally, which is quite an achievement for a song of its style and chosen subject matter... Okay, maybe it is somewhat cheesy, but it's evened out with some good lyrical moments and a great overall tone. I love it.

Overall, the album really is pretty darn good. I mean, if "Don't Let Go" and "Back to Back" were relegated to the bonus disc, "Things I Never Said" was bumped up onto the main disc, and "Girls Like That" and "MTV" were given slightly better choruses, then I'd probably consider it to be amongst their few finest albums.

I think it's cos it's a good song ;). I highly highly recommend Divine Comedy, here's a few of my favourites if you fancy.

A Lady of a Certain Age (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUio0gU4NCY) - The story of an aging pennyless socialite clinging on to past glorys.

Generation Sex (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzxemuaLG3s) - A brief reflection on the state of affairs in the late 90's. Keep your ears peeled for a genius reflection on Princess Diana's death about a minute in that really hits home.

Charge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5qXoEJI1qQ) - A bawdy little song with a 'Charge of the Light Brigade' theme type thing going on.

Here Comes the Flood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHPqYxp-xpE) - A song about armageddon/media scaremongering. I don't care much for the fan video on this one.

The Certainty of Chance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjJY3-Ze8zI) - I've no idea what this one's about. But it's sure as hell powerful.

The Dogs and the Horses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b2EpmBbo8w) - And a nice big finish to top it off.

That's more than enough, I tried to get a mix of songs in here, but there's far far more quality tunes in the catalogue.

I've been listening to Megadeth's 'Youthanasia' a whole lot since it arrived in the mail, and whilst all of the tracks are either very good or great, this is the song that has stuck out the most and grown on me significantly. Beautiful melodies and strong lyricism combine to create one of the most profound metal songs I've heard, and one of Mustaine's greatest musical achievements. I just wanna listen to this one repeatedly.

This really is a great song, I usually give Megadeth a hard time because i'm not the biggest metal fan and Mustaines vocals really irritate me (see 'Peace Sells') but this is excellent stuff all round. It's actually radio friendly, but it's not one of those sell-out songs.

I always thought Mustaine was both the bands best and worst asset all at once, really creative on guitar, particularly with chords and riffs, not the usual uncreative power chords or lazy open chugging of the low-E string you usually get in the genre. But for the most part, those vocals man!! :p

I fully agree. Well, that's one of the reasons, anyway. Another reason is the fact that bands'/artists' actual best songs are often left off of compilations in exchange for the better-known tracks (see Guns N' Roses' 'Greatest Hits'), and it's just another case of popularity-over-quality, and I'd rather not invest in products which do this.

Plus, being somewhat of a collector, I really see no point in buying compilations, because I'll often end up purchasing a band's entire catologue anyway, meaning that purchasing a compilation would just be a complete waste of my money.

I can't help but think that the LP's becoming something of a lost art in the digital age :(
That's something that I also worry about. I actually hate the popularity that digital music has gained, and I've ranted on the idea of digital music distribution in the past. Listening to an album is so much more rewarding and fulfilling than simply listening to a few songs from an artist/band, but the trends that have been brought about by digital music actually discourage musicians from even bothering with full-length albums anymore. And I don't ever want to see the day when I have to buy a series of my favourite band's singles off of the internet, instead of buying their new cohesive collection of songs every 2/3 years.

I'm yet to buy a piece of music digitally, and I'll probably hold out on doing so for as long as I can.

Hah, yes, I agree that his vocals can sometimes be irritating. But I find that (from what I've heard of Megadeth) his vocals have actually grown less annoying over time. Yes, "Peace Sells" is annoying in the vocal department, "Sweating Bullets" even more-so, and their cover of "No More Mr. Nice Guy" to a painful degree. But I find that a lot of the annoying edge comes from Dave trying too much to sound 'cool' and 'menacing', but he's sort of toned it down in his later years, and, as a result of just sounding more natural, his vocals are much more tolerable.

This, not so much. Sorta falls into all those stereotypical jazz trappings and doesn't really go anywhere.
Yeah, as I said, it's not one of their better tracks. But these guys were actually the first rock band I was into, so I'm automatically going to have a nostalgic positive bias towards all of their material :).

Great to hear :). Sadly the band never really got the worldwide recognition that they deserved. Hugely popular in Australia - almost regarded as royalty, in a sense :D - but completely unknown everywhere else. Which is quite sad, given the talent of the band.

Those guys are actually pretty great, from what I've heard of them. I was really tempted to buy their latest album, 'Death & Legacy', as all of the samples I'd heard kicked quite a considerable amount of arse. But, alas, I was unable to find a cheap seller, and never ended up doing so. I'll have to look into it again, though.

From what I can glean, the band certainly has a whole lot more imagination and musical creativity than most other similar-styled bands. There have been so many bland Symphonic Power Metal acts emerging since Nightwish popularized the genre (somewhat), so it's refreshing to hear some real quality amongst the myriad mediocrity.

The Divine Comedy - "The Frog Princess (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtLos_swC5k)" - 10/10
Not necessarily the best song on the album, but certainly the one that I've been listening to the most off of 'Casanova'. It's just one of those songs where I can't help but feel good/happy when listening to it, even if the lyrical content is somewhat bittersweet (or not definitively positive). It sort of has the same effect on me as songs like Jethro Tull's "Fallen On Hard Times" (10/10), where the melody and vibe of the song just gives me this odd feeling of contentment. I like it.

Bible of the Devil - "Ol' Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVBzvEN-JZQ)" - 8.5/10
This is an example of how to strongly wear your Thin Lizzy influence on your sleeve, whilst still infusing your music with fresh, original elements...

Sinner - "Back On Trail (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgXxszUdgMg)" - 3.5/10
...And this is a example of how to blatantly rip them off to the point where you can identify the exact song that they've tried to emulate.

Another song I have been listening to a lot is When We Stand Together from Nickelback's new Album, a really really good song.

Yeah, I wasn't really much of a fan of that song. I've gave it three or four listens upon its release, but, to me, it just suffered from the Nickelback-single syndrome. Yeah, the song's (arguably) passable, mildly enjoyable and quite catchy, but it's just so unadventurous, I find. To me, it's just a stock-standard Nickelback single; it's unoriginal, and it's traveling ground that's been trodden before.

It's a rock song written with a mainstream pop sensibility. Yeah, the lyrics are okay, but they do have some rather cliche moments, and the quality of the lyrical content doesn't quite make up for the shortcomings in the musical aspects.

I'd probably give it a 4/10, because it's the very definition of mediocrity, topped off with a dash of triteness. Don't let my criticisms tarnish your opinion of the song, though; I understand that the style and structure of the song is very appealing to some listeners. But I just personally think that the quality of Nickelback's music is found in the band's album-only tracks, rather than in their singles like this one.

"Follow You Home" - that's where you'll find some fine rock songwriting. "This Means War" and "Side of a Bullet" - that's where you'll find some some adventurousness and ballsy-ness. "Believe it or Not - that's where you'll find some melodic hard rock that doesn't intentionally cater to the masses, but songs like "When We Stand Together" actually go out of their way to do so, and they suffer for it.

It's the same case with "Far Away", "If Today Was Your Last Day", "If Everyone Cared", "Photograph" - they're all tailored to the tastes of the mainstream music listener. Nickelback's only truly good ballad-single, in my opinion, was "Savin' Me", because the music was prioritized over the damaging 'how can we make this popular?' mentality. On that song, I believe that some actual meticulous thought went into it. But, when I listen to "When We Stand Together", I just can't convince myself that the band put much effort into piecing that together.

I'm generally a critic of unoriginality and uninspired/going-through-the-motions songwriting, and a typical Nickelback single is a serious offender in that regard. They feature all of the elements a rock song needs to achieve popularity, but there is just no semblance of imagination or creativity in the song.

Though, that being said, the song does have its redeeming qualities. They do show some melodic prowess, and I must commend them on the lyrics: '...when we could feed a starving world with what we throw away, but all we serve are empty words which always taste the same...'. But that still doesn't save the song for me, as it's another cliche Nickelback single which is guilty of the unforgivable sin of playing-it-safe and reveling in its obnoxious unoriginality. In fact, ironically, the words 'always taste the same' apply almost perfectly to the bulk of Nickelback singles, which is why I'm increasingly critical of each one that's released.

P.S.: Gosh, that got rather long-winded, didn't it. Sorry, I just have quite a bit to say on Nickelback as a popular musical act, and was actually going to review/rate "When We Stand Together" a little while back, but forgot to. So that explains my rant.
And don't worry, my tirade wasn't entirely directed at you; more-so directed at the topic ;).

Good, straight-forward rock music from a band who have already firmly established an appealing trademark sound.

Eagles - "No More Walks in the Wood" - 4/10
Perfectly harmonized wankery. Only mildly enjoyable if I'm in a state of utter repose.

Eagles - "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture" - 10/10
A great critique of Western culture conveyed through sophisticated lyricism, and accompanied by strong musicianship.

AC/DC - "Rising Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3aZraMkCNg)" - 8/10
A good rock song.

Iced Earth - "Boiling Point (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1OkbSoF_fU)" - 6/10
A mediocre metal song.

The Compulsions - "Ea$y Money (http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/song_details/10810888)" - 3.5/10
A bad rock song.
Death by cliche. Whether the lyrics are an homage to other songs or not, they're still unoriginal and damn unimpressive. The melody in the song is okay, but it soon begins to drone on and wear thin. Besides, the shallow, thoughtless lyrics act as a perfect counterweight to any credibility or profundity that the music may show.

Looks like Sex- Mike Posner (YFM Remix)

I'm not the biggest fan of Posner ("Cooler than Me" was incredibly dull, and "Bow Chicka Wow Wow"... no. Just no.) but this song was actually pretty good. It's a remix of the actual song, which I haven't heard, so I'm just going by the remix here.

The beat is very catchy. I can imagine dancing to it, which already makes it better than most of his work. The lyrics aren't that much to write home about, but then again, there isn't much material to work with when your hook is literally "She Looks Like Sex." But I can kind of understand the message of the song. The girl looks like someone I'd love.

Overall, solid. 9/10

I've been listening to my favorite album on loop the past few days and have been solidifying a lot of my thoughts on it. I decided I might as well them here just in case anyone gives a shit.

"Favorite album", here, refers to the album which I personally like the most as a whole. A lot of things factor into making this my "Favorite album". I like the construction of tracks, as a whole, as an exploration of a theme and its thematic progression. The vast majority of the songs are ones that I enjoy as single tracks, and those that I don't I can respect as part of the overarching structure, even though I don't particularly attach myself emotionally to them. "Favorite" is used in a very subjective sense, I don't claim that it is by any means the "best" album, which might require looking at a lot more albums in a more objective way with consideration for what they accomplished and what they are within the framework of their genres and dealing more strongly in terms of musical performance skill, and I'm not doing that here at all. I'm just thinking about this album in terms of emotional effect and enjoyment on my part, which is very much divorced from what I'd usually consider a more objective critique, which is something I tend to try and strive for in most things.

With that out of the way:

Heretic Pride
the Mountain Goats
2008

Sax Rohmer #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rUbFljMLIY8 )

This song takes the atmosphere of Sax Rohmer novels, their harshness and antagonistic nature, and places someone right in it. There's a real desperation, but a despiration filled with this defiant energy, and I feel like he's really able to get across that prideful, desperate, defiant energy across in the way he sings these lines. Every song in this album has some element of being in a hostile cultural environment and how people react to this kind of situation, where a society has turned on someone for whatever reason. Here, the character faces an atmosphere that is naturally hostile, or that he thinks is, and reacts with defiance and hope.

Michael Myers Resplendent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlA1yyWVoGU)

Though at the end of the album, this song is very much Sax Rohmer #1's sister song thematically so I'm talking about it next. While Sax Rohmer #1 is filled with a defiant energy, this song takes the same theme and takes on a fatalistic acceptance. The energetic chords of the first song are replaced here with a somber piano . There's just a sense of defeat, there is no eventual victory in sight, none of that fervent, energetic hope that Sax Rohmer #1 owns and encapsulates.

The song references the end of Halloween 2, in which Michael Myers emerges from flaming wreckage and immediately falls over, defeated. He's no longer fighting. The song is told from a special effects point of view because, first, it provides really incredible imagery, but also shows a sort of preparation to walk through the flames. He knows it's coming and he's just setting himself up for it(I spent eight hours in my make-up chair/Waxed my chest and shaved off all my hair). That the album starts with defiance and ends with defeat is, I think, very powerful.

San Bernardino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7USvH1j6UY)

A very powerful and emotionally touching story here, I think, in which an unwed couple gives a natural birth in a cheap motel off the highway. Yet another unexpected, unplanned, hastily enacted action in lives that, obviously, are ruled by these kinds of things. The album continues here with the theme of social/cultural rejection, people who find themselves in a situation that is culturally hostile. These are people who will be rejected, who will be scoffed at, who will be judged as promiscuous and irresponsible and rash for the rest of their lives. There's a sense of love that comes from deciding to go ahead with everything and take ownership of this, in spite of the pressure, or at least to find some beauty in that singular moment regardless of what the future brings. The tune here gives off a feeling of fond recollection, of light and joy in spite of the cheap and broken-down surroundings, which are retroactively given a sort of magical glow, an almost poetic beauty.

Heretic Pride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ6O7Jk4MXs)

Here we, go, the titular song of the album, and arguably its thematic core. This song has a defiant energy not all that dissimilar from that presented in the opening track, but now warped, turned batshit insane and turned up to 11. The "heretic" is ostracized, like the other characters throughout, but he doesn't use it as a driving force like in the first track, or accept crippling defeat like in the last, nor does he find beauty or joy in his surroundings like the second track, nor does he feel shame. He owns it in a completely different way, he takes pride in his status as a heretic, as a hated individual, as someone that the community has decided is unworthy of life. He laughs at them, he laughs at their concepts of what is right, he laughs at the very concept that his life even matters. He defies everything and just takes on this really powerful, really energetic, almost infectious pride and zeal that has a contagious appeal. While other heretics and outcasts are at the edge of a flame and are menaced by it or find comfort despite the scorching heat, this song jumps right into the center of it and laughs its ass off, and that kind of raw power and denial is infectious and appealing and makes this one of my favorite songs.

Autoclave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=sskFjbHu_W0)

Another real favorite of mine. I really like the metaphor here, with an autoclave being compared to a heart that just destroys anything that gets inside it. I mean, we've all known(or been) at least one person like that. Someone who just won't, or perhaps can't, let anything positive or real get inside of them, or maybe that's just the way they see it. Every extension of love or kindness feels false and filled with the potential for betrayal.

I love the way this is portrayed, there's a sort of matter-of-fact admission that this is the way it is. It's a warning, trying to push someone away, because the character here identifies themselves as unlovable and untouchable and unsafe for others. This character's ownership of their isolation creates an almost pathological distrust of others comingled with a hatred of the self, a mixture of shame and blame, distrust and longing, and a self-perpetuating loneliness that I can personally identify with in a very real way.

New Zion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Oh4BIGKKeAI)

This is the first song that I more respect than enjoy personally. It ties into something that I never really was a part of, as it links into a "Cultmania" sensation that I never personally experienced. Still, the cult imagery with this spin emotionally is fairly interesting to me, and I respect its place in the album's overall theme of cultural rejection.

So Desperate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wp34j0-Y418)

This is a song that, on the first listen, I didn't care for all that much. My first reaction was that it felt "whiny", and this was a fairly shallow, surface-level judgement on my part. I first heard it as a song about being desperate, about being sad, with no real message to it. Thing this is that it's not really about the desperation itself, so much as it's about how desperation forces people together who really have no good reason to be together. Apply the album's themes to this song, and you have people who deal with their ostracism and rejection by grabbing on to anyone who will let them, and often that brings desperate people together for the sole reason that they're desperate, and it creates couples that never should exist in the first place. I personally love the way he's able to convey that weakness of spirit and the corresponding emotional hunger in the way his voice strains as he sings.

On the Craters on the Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZ_EAr7Ces)

Another one of those "More respect than enjoy" songs. It's about locking yourself away from others, isolating yourself, guarding against some unknown and ill-defined disaster, and finding yourself in a state where that dread is the only comfortable emotion you have.

Lovecraft in Brooklyn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSj9LfA961o)
(ignore the shitty video content, it's the only one available)

This is a lot harsher than the usual Mountain Goats sound, but I still enjoy it. The song obviously preys on H.P. Lovecraft's time in Brooklyn, where he lived for a few years. What not everyone knows is that he lived in Brooklyn during the height of immigration and was, to put it bluntly, a racist xenophobe. This song soaks itself in that fear and suspicion and gives itself a harsher, fearful, conspiratorial feeling that has a powerful allure. Like the character in Heretic Pride who snaps and reduces everything to a joke, this character elevates everything to a pressing, urgent threat. It's a powerful image and a stark atmosphere that really gets inside you.

Tianchi Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FXGZ17y4Urg)

This song almost acts as an instantaneous 180 from the last song. It is as though the relatively harsh feeling of the last song strained them and let go, and this song relishes in lighter imagery. This song is about the Tianchi Lake Monster, and features some really pretty lyrics. The Tianchi Monster is alone, and ostracized, but it doesn't really care. It relishes in its beautiful surroundings, taken in by the lovely nature around it, its proximity to the heavens, and the beauty of the cosmos by the moonlight. It's a really peaceful, lovely song that counteracts Lovecraft in Brooklyn in every way despite fitting into the same thematic structure.

How to Embrace a Swamp Creature (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rF4rCHK_878)

A song about fucking someone you recently split ways with, in the sort of encounter that you'll say that you never meant to happen afterwards. You don't know why you showed up, things get tense, and you end up in bed. The imagery isn't particularly clear to me without the explanation that he gave at a show I went to, but once that context is given it makes a lot more sense to me now than it did on the first listen. "I try to tell you/Why I've Come/It's like I've got/Molasses on my toungue!". He doesn't know why he showed up. He's just there, and filled with a powerful mix of emotions that doesn't let him have a cohesive, understandable voice or even a known reason for doing..anything that he does. I think most of us have been there to some extent or another.

Marduk T-Shirt Mens Room Incident (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=R09CD5VWh_I)

Another song that deals with sex, directly. Specifically, anonymous sex in a Men's bathroom. This song resonates strongly with a sense of shame(And when I washed my hands/I ran the water hotter than I could stand; Face hidden from my view/I let myself imagine she was you, etc). The chorus line, (Weightless, Formless, Blameless, Nameless) shows an attempt to keep from becoming "material", from being "real", from seeing the other person as a "person". The song's title refers to an "incident", a thing that "happened", not a "person", and the song itself tries its hardest to remove "her" from the character's mind. The palpable shame of the act of anonymous bathroom-stall sex permeates the whole song and gives it a really creepy vibe, as the "weightless, formless, blameless, nameless" qualities are romanticized to try and keep away the shame.

Sept 15 1983 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Mz8TMslt8SA)

This one is, honestly, pretty simple. I feel like this song's place in the album is to use the story Prince Far I(Michael James Williams) to show how sometimes people who try to do good and exhibit real emotional honesty are often violently attacked by the world around them. The whole track takes on a feel that is closer to Reggae which, considering what it's a tribute to, really fits. It makes it a really nice track to go before Michael Meyers Resplendent, which is the final track which ends the album in acceptance of defeat.

I really love this album. It encompasses...every idea, really, about being a true outcast. It fits together really well to give off messages that can really reach a certain type of person emotionally.

Pieces (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WgbeGnZGnU&t=78s) by Red

I'm here again,
A thousand miles away from You.
A broken mess,
Just scattered pieces of who I am.
I tried so hard,
Thought I could do this on my own.
I've lost so much along the way.

...Then I see Your face.
I know I'm finally Yours.
I find everything I thought I lost before.
You call my name,
I come to You in pieces,
So You can make me whole.

I've come undone,
But You make sense of who I am
Like puzzle pieces in your hand,

Then I see Your face.
I know I'm finally Yours.
I find everything I thought I lost before.
You call my name,
I come to You in pieces,
So You can make me whole...

I tried so hard! So hard!
I tried so hard...

Then I see Your face.
I know I'm finally Yours.
I find everything I thought I lost before.
You call my name,
I come to You in pieces,
So You can make me whole...

So You can make me whole.

Rejection in the Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_hcb8P8zVY) from the Megamind soundtrack - 10/10

An outstanding musical score from Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, the song is so full of emotions even if it is quite short. But when you watch the movie the music really adds on the the emotions going on in that specific scene.

Pretty clever how they managed to really get you into that scene, but also manage to get a laugh in as well with a running gag.

Haha, exactly. :)

But not to forget the emotions they put in to the characters faces, some of the best facial animations I have ever seen in a movie. No one in real life could show that much emotion in one face.

The little gulp Megamind does gets me every time

Transatlantic - "Dancing with Eternal Glory/Whirlwind (Reprise) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihCryXQCw8s)" - 10/10
I got a really good chance to have a close listen to this on the drive home from a friend's place, and finally gave it the opportunity to sink in properly. I now really, really appreciate it. One of the best ways to describe it is 'grand'. It's a strong meld of several of the song's previous movements, but a very strong piece of music in itself, and a piece of melodic mastery, in a sense. Also, the piece features a very prominent sense of joy, but without sporting a cheesy 'happy vibe'. This displays a strong sense of songwriting skill on the band's part. The lyrics may contain too much of a blatant Christian message for some people's tastes, but, given my personal beliefs, this is no concern of mine (and, besides, they are well-written). Overall, it's a piece that I found quite profound and encouraging to listen to, whilst also being entertaining and enjoyable musically. A perfect way to conclude such a tremendous album.
