Let's talk about E3.

E3 began today, and Microsoft didn't have a whole heck of a lot to talk about other then Kinect. As a 360 owner, I can firmly say: bleh. That's not to say that there wasn't anything I was interested in however. Here are some things I found to be worth paying attention to.

HALO 4: I am cautiously optimistic. I'm not generally a huge FPS fan, but I really love the Halo universe, and I do want a continuation of Halo 3's mysterious after-the-credits ending. It's just hard to know how psyched I should be at another Halo game when Bungie isn't at the helm.

HALO 1 HD: Meh. I have played the first Halo so many times that it's hard to get really jazzed up over it, but on the other hand, I'm sure it won't be full price, and all its multiplayer maps will be compatible with Reach.

NEW FABLE: No real details except that it will have Kinect funtionality. But Fable is usually fun, so, yay?

MINECRAFT!?: Pretty surprising announcement. Minecraft is going to be released on the 360. Hard to imagine that it will get all the free updates the PC version gets, though. Sucks to be the dude(s) developing Fortresscraft, a absolutely blatant Minecraft rip-off, for XBox Live Indie Games.

RYSE: Don't know much about it so far other then it's a 1st person action game that uses Kinect. Made by the people that made Crysis, who firmly believe that taking words with the letter i in them and changing it to a y is a wonderful naming scheme.

DANCE CENTRAL 2: I don't have a Kinect, but I've played Dance Central at a friend's house and it's fun... and it's just gonna be more fun with multiplayer. Plus I'm just happy to see Harmonix still in good shape after Rock Band 3's disappointing sales.

I do not own a PS3 so I can't say I'm very interested to see what Sony's got to reveal, but I am very much looking forward to finding out what Nintendo's going to say about their new console. On the non-exclusive front, I'm totally looking forward to hearing whatever new Assassin's Creed-y information there is, and hoping that Telltale will shed some light on The Walking Dead or Kings Quest. I'm also hoping that Square Enix will announce plans to make Final Fantasy worth playing again.

EA was disappointing. All these Madden promises with no mention of fixes to single player issues they ALWAYS have. Nothing about NHL 12(probably booth presentation).

The Arkham City discussion was great though...included Catwoman gameplay and the initial premise. I didn't care about XBOX even though I watched the whole thing.

Coming from a Kinect owner (won it through a contest lol) I really didnt find many games interesting. They only showed four controller based games. Kinect Minecraft was the only surprise that I enjoyed. (I'd say the same for Halo 4, but that was leaked shortly before the conference.)

Although Microsoft's conference was a disappointment, however, there are more announcements I'm looking forward too. I normally don't watch the Sony conference, but I want to see more of NGP/Vita so I intend to watch that tonight as well. More NGP games/announcements would be nice to see. In addition, I also want to see more details on Telltale's upcoming seasons.

Actually, the whole "Kinect control" thing seems like a scam to me. Computers and consoles have been able to understand speech for more than a decade now. It would cost EA a mild yawn to implement the very same thing into the PC version without using "Kinect". But they won't, guess why? :rolleyes:

Dance Central 2 - Whatever. Playing the first one gave me headaches because apparently my brain doesn't like to bounce around like that.

I have no interest in the Sony NGP at this point, but I CANNOT wait for Nintendo's conference tomorrow.

Microsoft's press conference was a COMPLETE DISASTER. I seriously did not see a single thing there that interested me at all. The best I got was a small sense of relief that the "adjusting gameplay for a wider audience" delay for ME3 wasn't because they had to make it EVEN EASIER and more "streamlined", but because they were implementing Kinect and holding back the PC launch until MARCH to do so. And even then, I still don't care THAT much about ME3.

Looking forward to see what Sony's presser contains. The NGP, probably soon to be known as the "PS Vita", definitely has my interest after the unmitigated disaster that was the 3DS launch. I'm also looking forward to Nintendo's presser, because WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING THEY ARE RELEASING, OH MY GOD SOME OF THESE RUMORS HAVE TO BE FALSE BECAUSE OTHERWISE THIS IS SOME SUPER INSANE MUTANT MACHINE.

One linear path with a lot of action happening around you. Buring Ships yeah your there, walking on a beam above it with ease.

As someone who now owns all three consoles, my interest in the next two are still moot. They're only going to show games because that's what gives them good press, despite the new media options being much better then the other stuff they show. Everyone complains that it's too much Kinect: that's nice. This isn't a 'core gamer conference', it's a PRESS conference. That means it has to show everything. Microsoft is the only company that has realized this.

I wanna see what Nintendo are hiding, i'll be occupied during the conference though so i'll check it out when I get back. This thing if it's ridiculously convoluted could be the thing the haters will rally around oor it could be total genius... or it could just be a thing that plays games

They likely are using GSM for the vast majority of their models and didn't want to have a different type of mobile chip for the US market(which is very large and should be easy to shift production resources to). Due to that, AT&T and T-Mobile were probably their only technically viable choices, and T-Mobile's future is somewhat uncertain.

E3 seems pretty lacklustre so far.
Sure the PSVita seems interesting
Only one thing I want to know about it, and that is: will the PS1 classics for the PSP+PS3 going to be compatible with it as well, because if so, the prospect of playing Final Fantasy IX on the go is excellent.
(And before anyone asks. My PSP is in a bad condition, it really is. Some idiot (older brother) dropped it in the toilet and though miraculously it survived, it does not function properly at all now. The UMD drive is broken, the keys are unresponsive and worn, and the screen has a horrid aura (caused by water damage). The battery died too.)

It seems affordable (but barely like the 3DS was. Its probably going to be like £250 here...), but I hope the games are even moreso.
A reason why I stuck to the DS (and the 3DS to an extent), is that the games tend to get to a nice cheap price after a few months.

Well since I know there's at least one other person looking forward to seeing something about Colonial Marines:
IGN isn't covering SEGA except for 20min on the new Sonic(the day after the planned birthday celebration....I don't know whats going on there and apparently IGN doesn't care).
Gamespot just has their wandering crew with nothing time slotted in.
Gametrailers either isnt covering anything past day 2...or they just don't plan ahead.

Disappointing. The only thing I could find is that the website, Gamingtruth, will cover it...but not streamed.

The PS3 and 3D stuff bored me to tears, as did a lot of the actual software for the Vita.

But they seem to have hit the price point they needed. Not too far out, but $20 more than the competition to give it that "premium handheld for Grown-Ups" impression.

I'm really impressed by the Vita's hardware all-around. it seemed though that any games I'd be interested in were shoved into three second teasers at the end of the presentation, leaving me badly wanting to see more coverage of games that AREN'T major PS3 franchises because I honestly couldn't bring myself to care less about Uncharted or various shooters.

I love the thing as a device. The PS Vita as a MACHINE impresses me greatly and I really want one. As a device with a library of software that I intend to use, PS Vita has yet to really pull out the stops for me.

I noticed somersaulting, the ability to call in an air strike, and near seamless transitioning from gameplay to cutscene and back.

edit: Also, the ability to physically grab enemies over cover to pull them over it and stab them, instead of merely using cover to hide behind.

BTW, Nintendo is saying that the Wii U's controller allows you to not only have a small screen interface with which to interact with the game, but also the Wii U controller supports a latency-free, wireless screen for playing a full blown game on a handheld device (so long as it's within wifi range of your console,) so you can play Wii U games while someone else uses the TV.

Looking at the device. I don't think it will be beating the 360 or PS3 in terms of power, so I do think although they've got Darksiders 2, Arkham City, etc they won't be the superior versions. Being able to play on the controller when someone wants to use the tv is an handy feature, but other than that, I can see it becoming very gimmicky fairly quickly. Like how all the developers felt the need to include motion controls in games when the Wii came out, ultimately ruining the control schemes, I fear it will be the same with this.

As for everything else in the conference... More of the same franchises. Sigh.

They completely forgot about normal Wii games as well, focused entirely on 3DS and the new one.

Thoughts:

-Nintendo got to the point pretty quickly and kept dishing out announcements and relevant information. That was nice, after the stalltastic Sony conference and the completely irrelevant Microsoft conference.

-They still have yet to show a must-have 3DS game for me, yet. Luigi's Mansion 2 looks okay, but not like a system-seller.

-If they have NOTHING to show on the new Smash Bros. game, the thing is way too far out for it to really be a consideration at this point.

-I feel like I just watched the announcement of a controller, not a console. I'm left with so many questions! Will it have internal storage? What kind of discs will it use? What kind of A/V ports will it have? What is the plan for online on the thing? What games are we getting?

-Even some of the usual details for the controllers are vague. What's the range on those things? Battery?

-Color me skeptical about the controller. It looks somewhat awkward to hold and use, to me, compared to a normal controller. It also seems like it must be really expensive, exponentially raising the price of entry to families and people who, you know, want to play with friends.

-I feel like Nintendo is operating by some kind of moon logic with this thing, and it's to their detriment. By going balls-out on this controller, creating this weird THING that doesn't really fit with the way most games are controlled or manipulated, it seems like they're cutting themselves off from a lot of ports again, or opening themselves up to lackluster ports. I like the concept of wii U, but there wasn't any software that really sold it to me. Given that wii U is essentially nintendo's spin on multi-monitor gaming, it's pretty good. And it'll suit my style of gaming perfectly (I prefer to play games with headphones on, and nearish the screen, so currently handhelds are my thing. Handhelds and laptops. But now I can play console games, and my entire wii catalog whilst laying in bed. Cool.)

Also, Lego city stories is blatantly a child friendly GTA (also on 3DS), but that's okay with me. I feel the GTA series is far too OTT with it's maturity that it's immature. It's like they want to sell it to pubescent teens (the very same people who can't buy it), and the amount of foul language is something I detest.

They said it will be expandable with USB as well. In that case, as long as you can plug in a SATA drive in an enclosure that converts to USB, you could drop in 2TB on a spinning drive for $100.

My worries are less focused on expansion than they are on base console space. If they don't include a couple hundred gigs on a base model, how do they expect to expand their online content delivery strategy? Sell only to people willing to buy large drives completely separate from their consoles at an extra cost?

Sure. It's my understanding that Nintendo, being foremost a Japan-based company, is concerned with the physical size of the console. It has something to do with how, in Japan, real-world space for stuff is a premium. This is shown not only in the size of the Wii console, but also the size of the GameCube and the fact that it has a handle.

Now, granted if this were an issue they could always include a laptop HDD internally- which is considerably smaller than a full-size SATA drive- but that would increase the price point and I'm not sure Nintendo wants to do that.

To me, the reasoning behind the name instantly reminds me of the Scene in Simpsons where Homer is visiting some TV studios to get them to change a character name, and they explain the reasoning behind the show's name "Police Cops". "We thought, what do people like most? Police? Cops? Police Cops." It just seems like they put far too much thought into the name.

Nintendo's press conference got me excited about Nintendo again after giving up on them. We'll see how it goes. At least there's a LOT more third-party interest. We've known for a while now that the Wii U will have better graphics than either the PS3 or the 360 (the 3D tech demo video with the bird and the fish looked spectacular). Now all that's left to figure out is if their online delivery system will be improved. If both Nintendo and Sony have consoles with AAA cross-platform titles and free online play then Microsoft is going to have to bend and stop charging for Gold accounts.

Another thing I'd like to know is if it's compatible with Gamecube controllers. I read that it is compatible with GameCube discs but that's useless if we can't use the controllers to play them. And it wasn't mentioned in the specs anywhere. I'd also really like to know what kind of storage possibilities it's going to have.
EDIT: I guess the GameCube backwards compatibility rumour wasn't true. It's not listed anywhere

Also, finally we get Game Boy virtual console titles for the DS. Should have happened back when the first DSi launched.

Luckily the Dsiware stuff I got (which is great they carried that over since I didn't have a DSi) divides decently from those figures.
(got 20p left over from £20. A lot I know, but Shantae, Dragon Quest Wars, and Tetris Party are pretty good value and should last me between releases)

Plus it doesn't save card stuff (and option to would be appreciated Nintendo :mad:), so you have to keep entering your card details if you want to buy more stuff.

Banjo Threeie came out a while back, people don't treat it as such because it did what Paper Mario did and made it a radically different but still wholly enjoyable game. That said, really glad Paper Mario is back to form.

When Ocarina of Time: Master Quest was announced, I thought I might have to pre-order The Wind Waker to get it, even though I didn't own a GameCube yet. Luckily, I got a GameCube for Christmas before I had to make good on that intention.

Now it looks like I'll have to pick up Ocarina of Time 3D when it comes out, even though I don't have a 3DS, if I don't want to pay through the nose on eBay to get the soundtrack.

I'm just super psyched for Zelda in HD graphics with more quality than that of the PS3 and 360...assuming it's not that stupid cartoon look. The Zelda tech demo for WiiU looked VERY nice.

More than likely Arkham City will just be a port and won't take advantage of the extra screen in any way. It would be awesome if it did, though.

It would be interesting if you COULD use more than one, though. Each person could have their own view in a game. Split-screen without the splitscreen! And that's just off the top of my head. Actually, come to think of it didn't they demo a game at the press conference called Chase or something that showed that?
