Somebody I know told me that Cloud's girlfriend was Aerith, although I doubt that. Does anyone know who it is? I dont want to start any trouble. I'm not a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, but can somebody answer this for me?

Edit: I should have been more clearer, I didnt sound like I was. I should have asked who is clouds girlfriend.

I'm not sure he's explicitly with anyone, though the closest is probably Tifa.

Cloud and Aeris (do NOT correct my spelling) were clearly interested in each other, but unfortunately she died before anything could happen. Cloud and Tifa, on the other hand, were childhood friends and it's sort-of hinted that they may, at some point, hook up after the games/film, though it's never explicitly said.

So Aeris was never Cloud's girlfriend, though she might have been if she hadn't died. If you want more info on the history of all this, then here we go...

Cloud is basically a nobody. He leave Nibelheim full of dreams of becoming a big-time SOLDIER, but ultimately ends up as one of the nameless grunts that make up the Shinra army. However, there's a guy named Zack who IS a SOLDIER, and the two become friends. Zack also dates Aeris at some point.

After Cloud and Zack return to Nibelheim and Sephiroth goes bat-shit insane, the two escape with Zack badly injured. The two almost make it to Midgard before Zack dies, and Cloud, who's suffering an identity crisis, basically takes on Zack's life. Eventually he bumps into Aeris, and she's drawn to him because he reminds her of Zack, though she kind of learns to like Cloud for who he is as well.

Then Cloud goes bananas, Sephiroth proclaims he's a god and Aeris gets a sword through the chest. So much for that romance. It's shown, however, that as she becomes one with the Lifeforce, she reunites with Zack and they're happy ever after. Despite being dead. Go figure.

I think I've got that fairly accurate, though I'm sure someone will correct me. It's been a while since I played the game, watched the move and read the short stories.

Got it, spelling is off-limits.

So Aeris was never Cloud's boyfriend, though she might have been if she hadn't died.
What.

If Aeris hadn't died, there's a chance that she and Cloud might have ended up as Boyfriend and Girlfriend. Not that hard a concept to understand.

In FF7, you have the option of which person you would like Cloud to pursue a relationship with (Aeris/Aerith or Tifa). At the Golden Saucer, you go on a date with the girl you chose and do such things as ride the ferris wheel. There may be further interactions which vary depending on which girl you choose, but the initial visit to the Golden Saucer is the one place that comes to my mind at present.

For anyone confused about the names Aerith vs. Aeris: Aeris is the name given in the english releases of the game. My wife says that her brother's copy of FF7 called her Aerith, but also that he had the PC version. Whether this is accurate or not I have yet to verify.

A) Who you go out with at the Gold Saucer is not a direct player choice. The game memorizes with whom you've been most friendly with and that's the person to surprise you with a date at the Gold Saucer. I've heard it could even be Yuffie or Barret, but that might just be a cruel internet rumor. :D

B) The Aerith-Aeris discussion is pretty futile. Japanese does not have the "th" sound, so the English translation from the Japanese letters used an "s"; however, I think I've seen Tetsuya Nomura's original character design with the European letters "Aerith". So it's rather unclear what was "intended", and if there is a "correct" spelling. Funny story: The German version - one of the most horrible translations in the history of gaming - was obviously translated from the US version (!) and used "Aeris". I immediately changed it to "Aerith" back in 1997. So there you have it. :D

Update: I was speaking about this character design thingy (http://www.adellacosplay.com/images/uploads/aeris-ff7.jpg). At least I can confirm that it already existed in 1997. ;)

You can go on a date with Barret as well, and I don't think Cloud could be considered gay. Cloud is single all throughout the game, and I don't think he's ever even had a girlfriend. He was too busy trying (with little success) to advance his career to become a Soldier. Tifa is his childhood friend, and though he probably had a crush on her at some point, and maybe even she has some feelings for him, they're not in a relationship during the game (nor in the prequel Crisis Core, in which he's already left to become a Soldier). Aeris is, however, very close to be his girlfriend before she dies, and there's definately something going on between them from the start (although Cloud is too messed up in the head to make something out of it).

To make the answer short, no, she isn't.

If Aeris hadn't died, there's a chance that she and Cloud might have ended up as Girlfriend and Boyfriend. Not that hard a concept to understand.Ah. Edited my initial post, and am preparing to commit Seppuku. My shame knows no bounds.

Anyway. Aeris was what the name was originally translated to, but Square themselves have since changed it to Aerith in various other games - Kingdom Hearts and such. However, there's still a portion of the fanbase who prefer Aeris - myself included - because that's what she was 'originally' called and that's how we remember her.

Honestly, I call her Aeris because it's easier to say than Aerith and doesn't sound like you have a lisp. Try it.

...also, since nobody's corrected me, I'm guessing my initial explanation of things wasn't too far off the mark?

"Try" probably means checking if it fits. That implies counting the number of squares and checking intersecting letters. Do you count the number of squares without a specific word in mind? In that case, I'd find Han's crossword play superior to yours. ;)

BTW... I'd expect this word to have four letters. BECAUSE I already have a name in mind. ;)

This is just some confusing fan boy nonsense, in my honest opinion. I think people just went bat shit crazy with this story line and its characters. Cloud and Aeris, there is some romance, and there is a hint of some sort of romantic back ground, but over all I think he loves her as a sister or something that he looks after and she looks after him. I don't see any real indication of a sexual thing going on.

It's more romantic in the way of heroism and all of that.

While there's a bit of joking around in the later portion of this thread, the first page has some pretty complete answers to your question, particularly from Darth Marsden and Chyron8472 (though the main, real answer is apparently "nobody"). After all possible answers had been given, it's not surprising that the thread took a less serious direction. Not much more to be said.

I don't see what you mean by the FF series being "forever F**ed" either. It's pretty common in dramatic games with a large cast of characters that the main character won't be paired with anybody in particular, but a lot of potential relationships will be hinted at. If you asked who Link's girlfriend is in the Zelda series, you'd get an equally complicated "nobody" answer.

Just because you're sat behind the anonymous safety of a computer screen, it doesn't give you the right to throw insults at people. Try talking to people in that manner in the real world and see where it gets you.

Also, for the record; my post regarding Cloud and Barrett is completely valid seeming as it can be performed in-game.

What does this statement even mean (I am not merely referring to your dubious use of grammar)? It's ironic considering your mention of the word stupidity.

I played Final Fantasy VII when it was new, loved it like crazy.

However many years later, I went to Target on release day to snatch up Advent Children, my nerdy mitts quivering with joy to be holding NEW FINAL FANTASY VII after all those years.

Then I watched it.

And thus died my interest in seeking out any of the other new FFVII related material.

I've played FF7 once the whole way through. i tried going back and replaying it but I can't get past the 1st CD anymore.

I own Advent Children. It's alright. I think they focused too much on trying to make awesome fightscenes that they just didn't care about the story. I had to watch that thing like six times to fully understand what's going on. The script is just so... blah... that its just hard to follow. Short and uninteresting plot points followed by very long and drawn out fight scenes. The only think really worth watching it for is the fancy CGI and the final fight. And, of course, to see all your favorite FF7 characters.

The story really killed it though. I would have rathered it be actually be the story from the game. Would have game them time to fill in some plot holes.

Didn't play any other FF7 releated games. Almost picked up Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core once but didn't. lol

The thing that bothered me most about AC is how incomprehensible it was even to people who actually finished the game. The first time I watched it, the whole time I had no idea what was actually going on. Just like the game, without reading any materials from the limited edition, you'll be easily lost.

0. Oh wait. 1. The demo of FF7 on the PC. I was not impressed.

The PC demo was my first experience with not only a Final Fantasy game but with a role-playing game in general. Like yourself; I was unimpressed with what I played. A couple of months later I went into HMV to buy a new game. I picked up a copy of Unreal and took it to the counter. The sales assistant enquired what gaming rig I possessed, I told him my PC's specs and he informed me that they weren't up to scratch for Unreal.

I took the game back to the shelf and tried to locate another game to purchase. I really couldn't find anything to buy but I was determined to buy something and that's when serendipity kicked in; for some reason I bought a copy of Final Fantasy VII. From the moment I started playing through to the emotionally charged finale; I was hooked. It was and still is one of my happiest gaming memories.

In short; the Final Fantasy VII PC demo is not indicative of the actual game. Part of what makes Final Fantasy VII such a great game is it's interesting (if highly convoluted) storyline and it's charming characters, which are aspects that the demo completely failed to convey.

It would be such a shame to miss out on one of the greatest games ever made due to one of the worst demos ever made. I strongly recommend picking up a cheap copy of the full game and seeing if you enjoy it.

Time for me to chime in...not out of any real reason, just felt like dropping in here. :D

I didn't get into Final Fantasy VII until a few years after it was out. My copy of the game was used, but I didn't think much of that fact at the time. I was too used to my cartridge games working solidly. Anyways, made it through the whole game, got up to the final boss battles without maxing levels, without Omnislash or any other final limit breaks, and no Knights of the Round. JENOVA Death? Not hard. Bizarro Sephiroth? Difficult. Safer Sephiroth? HOLY CRAP. Managed to beat them, then did that little pre-scripted, "there's no way you can effin lose here" fight, then sat back and waited for the ending to roll...and waited...and waited...stared at the black screen like it was a spatial anomaly intent on devouring my soul...and then spouted swears at the screen for a good solid hour. Tried again, couldn't beat Safer Sephiroth if my life depended on it. So, I did what any sane person would do. I took the game out of my PlayStation, put it in its case, and hit YouTube to watch the ending.

Then a couple years back, the game hit the PlayStation Network. I bought it, and played it on my PS3, this time taking great care to follow guides, get every weapon, and generally max out the party as best I could(except Aerith...who cares what level she gets to, she dies anyway). Still never got Knights of the Round, but got everyone else's ultimate weapons and final Limit Breaks. Then at level...I think 70? I went to give one more go against Sephiroth. I didn't think I had a chance. JENOVA? Piece of cake, took maybe a minute. Bizarro Sephiroth? Didn't stand a chance against the might of three different Bahamuts. Safer Sephiroth? Omnislash and Final Heaven pretty much took care of him.

Verdict on the original? I love it.

Now, onto the Compilation stuff. Before Crisis is a dumb phone game, so never played it. Crisis Core was pretty good. Advent Children Complete(the Blu Ray version) is a fun movie to watch. Dirge of Cerberus was a decent game. And of course, the oft rumored remake is a topic of some interest to me. Particularly after the success of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. If Square follows that formula, just updates the graphics and gives the game a fully realized world, but keeps the gameplay the same with some enhancements, then it'll be great. If they try to make it like the later Final Fantasy games, it'll be a hardcore failure.

I thought that I was the only one this happened to, that was the day my brother and I lost our innocence.

I remember shouting at the screen after Final Fantasy VII's ending. Not because it froze or anything... but because I was extremely disappointed with the ending. xD I just sort of expected something more than 1 minute FMV. Like what happened after etc.

I suppose we got that eventually with Advent Children, but as we discussed already, that was hardly spectacular in terms of story.

Oh, and as for missing endings. I missed the entirety of Suikoden V's True ending because someone decided to walk in my room, and then stand infront of the screen while talking about something, and wouldn't move. Really pissed me off, because I'd gone to the trouble of getting every character so I could see the true ending. Not to mention the last save point was a good 2hours prior to that, along with quite a few bosses along the way. I finally watched it on youtube last year.
