View Full Version : Yes, you buy individual episodes on consoles (5$) and the entire game on PC/Mac (25$)

I'm not 100% sure I will like the game, and I do not want to commit to an entire season if i don't like the first episode. Will there be any way to purchase individual episodes off the Steam store? Currently you can only prepurchase the season pass.

Sadly, no, there's no way to purchase individual episodes, at least for the PC.

There'll likely be a demo released at some point with gameplay in it but that's something you'd have to wait for.

If they don't plan for releasing one episode at a time (A la everything prior to Jurassic Park), then you can pretty much expect to -not- be able to buy them individually. With Jurassic Park on the PS3, even though it's split up into 4 episodes that you need to download and install separately (And technically they're separate in the PC version), you can only buy the full season. There may or may not be a demo on the PS3, so that might be sufficient for the OP's needs.

They may release the 1st episode to buy once the game comes out. They did that with Monkey Island. They haven't said they won't yet, and since they are selling single episodes for $4.99 on consoles I don't see why they wouldn't for PC too. JP doesn't count since they always just sold the whole game. BttF sold as separate episodes.
I'm sure they will for PC. The preorder is also ONLY on PC, you can't preorder for consoles, and it's cuz they're doing the Be in the game contest that you hafta preorder full season. Don't worry OP

I can't think of any reason why they couldn't do this, but to be on the safe side, I'm probably going to wait on getting this until anything's announced. Actually, maybe I'll pick up the first episode on consoles, just to see. Usually I'm gung-ho on preordering, or at least buying, everything Telltale puts out, but I'm one of the people who got burned on Jurassic Park.
We've been selling season-pass-only on PC for quite a while. Back to the Future was sold that way as was Devil's Playhouse, and even Tales of Monkey Island, back to 2009.
Often later in the season or afterwards we open up single episode sales, and also often at some point the first episode shows up on its own as part of promotions or sales, but we've found that it is actually way easier on everybody (including customers) to start off by just selling a season pass.
When we opened up on day one selling seasons and individual episodes, the communication was "BUY THE SEASON. OR AN EPISODE. AND THEN UPGRADE YOUR EPISODE TO A SEASON. OR IF YOU BOUGHT TWO EPISODES HOW DO YOU UPGRADE?" and we immediately spent more time explaining how the episodic structure works than explaining what the game is!
It's frustrating that the people who are interested in just buying one chapter get left with a dilemma, I know, but it turned into a situation where we had to make the call that we can't please everybody out of the gate.

Thanks, I'll probably get the first episode from there. I'm still gunshy after Jurassic Park, plus I didn't really like the comics.

...just buy the episodes separately, I don't feel like paying $25. I remember reading online that you could buy each episode for $5. Is this still true or not?

At this time, you cannot buy episodes separately on PC/Mac.
They might be available separately at a future date, but no such thing has been officially announced by Telltale.
The only way to buy the episodes separately right now is to purchase the PS3 or Xbox version.

I was hoping to buy the first episode so I could see if I liked it before I paid for the whole thing. So I guess there is no way to buy the episodes separately? Kind of a shame...

You can only buy individual episodes on XBox & PSN. On PC it is season only. I think you will like it though!

So I bought the game in steam/pre-ordered for £18.99 and I assumed this was the season pass version to give access to all 5 episodes seeing as each episode on there own is roughly £3.50.. Apparently not, can anyone here explain what on earth is going on? steam forums offer no help/advice.
Although this has been said, I was a bit skeptical of the game at first and thought since it was based on a comic & TV series that it'd be a huge flop like others, but it kept me firmly gripped at the helm bashing buttons away to get through the first episode.
This then led to my surprise as I had no access to the next four episodes, which I assumed I would having paid the full price for it. :(

the rest of the episodes aren't out yet. it's going to be like Sam & Max or back to the Future, with episodes released monthly.
corruptbiggins
04/24/2012, 03:47 pm
The remaining episodes finished yet and will be released on a monthly (if they stick to the usual release schedule) basis. You pay in advance for all the episodes and when the next one is out you'll just be able to download and play.
It's an episodic release. Episodes 2-5 haven't been released yet.

Ahhh right, my mistake there then, that's fine by me just steam has it stated that you can play all 5 episodes if you have bought the season pass instantly, must be an error on there end leading to the confusion! thought I had paid £18.99 for just the one episode haha, thank you :) grr will be just as bad as waiting for the next TV series season to start then with it being monthly but hell, it's too interesting and fun to play to hate :)

"Episode 1 is available immediately upon purchasing the full season with the remaining episodes being delivered monthly thereafter."
Must of read it wrong on Steam. Its pretty clear, but its worth the wait trust me.

I had pre ordered the game and now I hear that you have to pay $25 for the other episodes? Does pre ordering the game get you all the episodes for free or do I have to pay?
der_ketzer
04/25/2012, 09:09 am
You heard wrong.
The pre-order includes the whole season.
As does buying the Game after it's release on PC and MAC. There is no single episode purchase available on PC and MAC. Only on consoles. And there episodes are 5$ each.

Ok just want to make sure cuz if i have to pay 25 for all id loose my mind lol. Also i had to go to the .exe to put it in windows compatability: windows 98/me and run as admin to get it to start up because i kept getting the .exe crash everytime i tried to start the game.

You can't. Microsoft doesn't like letting Telltale do that so you have to buy every episode separately.
Gibbeynator
05/02/2012, 02:04 pm
Well, if the remaining episodes are DLC, and it sounds like they are, why can't Microsoft just let them sell a season pass for the DLC, like other games with season passes?
PsychoRaven
05/02/2012, 02:06 pm
You'd have to ask Microsoft that. I'm sure Telltale would love to know the answer too.

Has Telltale actually come out and said Microsoft won't let them?
I mean, it would seem pretty strange for Microsoft to arbitrarily say no to Walking Dead while okaying Mortal Kombat, LA Noire, Gears of War 3, etc. for season passes.

This started long before TWD. This started back when they were releasing Sam & Max season 1 on the 360. In fact for awhile there TellTale quit releasing stuff on the 360 due to this problem.

Yeah, but no other games had season passes on X-Box Live back then, either. I believe LA Noire was the first one.

So what's that please?

again, microsoft not so evil in the uk, at most each individual episode is £4.25 which is £21.25 for all 5, but as you can buy 2000 microsoft points for £16.99 its works out to be much cheaper, im sure there would be a similar offer in other countrys?

Oh, so that's just my currency? That price $32 is the "lower" price for the 2000 MPoints as you say.. However, you can buy it (in the Czech Republic) for 620,00 Kč which is $32,6 or £20.1

On the PC, you only pay once, $25, and the episodes download through the client you installed. On the 360, you can pay for episodes individually, and they all load from that little client.

No. The $25 was for all 5 episodes, but currently episode 2 is only available on xbox live. Once episode 2 (and the rest) are available on the PC, they'll be free for you to download.
And that should be sometime today.
You paid for all episodes, don't be afraid.

Today I've pressed to buy The Walking Dead episode one, and it brings me to the shop with Walking Dead 24,99$. Then I pressed to put in the second episode and I get the same thing - Walking Dead. Is 24,99$ the cost for whole series or they just don't specify episodes in the checkout?
