Given the proliferation of "The X Threads", I've made a thread committed to music... but only soundtracks! Which ones have caught your interest lately? Why?

I remembered Musically Inspired discussing how he felt the original Batman theme was stronger than the new Batman theme of the Nolan trilogy. While I disagreed, I did agree about one thing... the Danny Elfman soundtrack is amazing.

It's awesome Hollywood music at its best. Bold, big, brassy. "Waltz to the Death" is a creepy track that just invokes the image of Joker dancing along at the top of the cathedral.

The actual Batman theme itself is interwoven into many of the action sequences, and the spirit of this 80s Batman just pops to mind. That raw fighter, cruising along through the skies, forming the Batman silhouette upon the moon. Awesome.

I've always had a fondness for the Ghostbusters soundtrack, both for it's orchestral score and for it's licensed songs. After reading the title of this thread, I immediately got Elmer Bernstein's main title theme of Ghostbusters in my head. :)

I can't really say that I enjoy Elfman's music as stand-alone hearing, with the exceptions of his main themes. Elfman creates some awesome movie themes (with Batman and Spider-Man being among my favourites), and he's actually a really awesome composer in that his music really compliments what's happening on the screen and greatly enhances the mood, but is impossibly boring to listen by itself (unless he somehow weaves in the main theme into the tune :p ). But that's just me, I guess.

I have a fondness for (what else?) the music from the Star Wars films. It really was the best part of the movies, especially the prequel trilogy, but it's amazing in its own right.

Listening to it separately is actually a really weird experience, because you keep getting images in your head of the scenes the music is from, but because it's in your mind it can be radically different to how it actually played out in the movies. The piece that plays when Luke looks at the sunsets is amazingly epic in my mind. It's hard to go back to putting it to actual images now.

For recent soundtracks, I can't name any that I've thought stood out among the rest. I really miss Jerry Goldsmith's scores. I do think the scores to the Stargate series were fantastic, though.

I'm currently listening to the Gattaca soundtrack.

Michael Nyman is a majestic composer. Some of the songs on this album are so strong I get chills. "The Arrival" uses strings with such finesse and grace, and the upwards swell of the song really reaches into the heart. You really feel the protagonist's pain.

Most of the CDs I have are movie soundtracks. I think they make good background music when I'm also doing something else. Star Wars and Indiana Jones are always good, and I'd recommend some Pixar scores as well (in particular, "The Incredibles" and "Monsters, Inc.").

I'm hooked. I listen to this a lot.
It qualifies as a soundtrack because it is official music bundled with Skyward Sword.

EDIT: oh... and by "soundtrack," DAISHI I hope you mean "score." I love film and game scores (instrumentals), but normally not soundtracks (ie. with vocals). Albeit with certain exceptions, like Simple and Clean and Passion from Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 respectively.

I always operated under the idea that a soundtrack is the recording and the score is the written music that contains all the parts so that the conductor can conduct properly.

Otherwise, I don't know what the hell I've been buying all these years.

I completely forgot to mention I listen to video game soundtracks. LOTS of Video Game soundtracks. Mostly stuff garnered from Indie Music Bundles at the moment, so things like the Mighty Milky Way, Imposter Nostalgia, stuff from games I've never even played. It's all good stuff and great to listen to while writing.

Bwahaha If we're talking Pure OSTs I have way, way too many! XD

Loads from Indie bundles alone!

But I also have over 200 GOG titles, many of which include a soundtrack as well!

I will admit I like the Descent Soundtrack, some of the tunes off Might and Magic, and I love almost every indie chiptune I hear.

(Once I get my 2 32gb Class 10 microSDs and my second memory card adapter for my PSP I'm going to add loads more music to my old card (planning to split my games and music into two 64gb cards you see (a 128gb PSP is a beastly concept! :D)). I'd have 64gb to play with, and thats A LOT of music)

(I'm into chiptunes at the moment. Virt and Disasterpeace are amongst the best at their craft. Preschtale by C-Jeff is just fantastic. Taking the concept to a whole new level!)

EDIT: Oh and Castlevania.
I'm really liking Castlevania's music again. Enough for me to go back to the games and play them on the Wii.
(Emulating NES on Wii and playing with the Wiimote is very comfortable. I recommend it! :D)

I'm also unashamably admitting that I practically know Megaman 2's music off by heart! HAHA!

I love movie and game soundtracks, especially if they have a catchy main theme. In fact, one of the downfalls of Iron Man 2, IMO, is the complete absence of any music cues from the first movie. The Transformers trilogy had a good score. Batman and Batman Returns were amazing. I love the soundtracks for all of Star Trek, yes even "Where My Heart Will Take Me" from Enterprise. I also enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks, and Sherlock Holmes. I also love John Williams music, though my favorite would be the Superman theme song. It just embodies Superman, in my opinion.

I don't know if it's considered to be the 'best of Jerry Goldsmith', but my favourite music by him is the Gremlins theme. It's only over the past few years that I've got into soundtrack albums, starting off with the various TV shows & films I liked. From TV I've really got into Bear McCreary's work, most especially his work on Battlestar Galactica (his other work is good too, Caprica, Eureka, the Walking Dead but I so far only own the BSG albums).

Recent film soundtracks I've got include Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Star Trek & Moon and has given me three composers to really look out for: John Murphy, Michael Giacchino & Clint Mansell (I also love Mansell's Lux Aeterna for Requiem for a Dream but I really don't like the film).

There's only one game soundtrack that I've really listened to (I should change that, considering I do have a few others through various indie bundles) and that is Alan Wake by Petri Alanko. It is beautiful and haunting and stands on it's own as well as it fits the game.

A friend of a friend just opened a record store in my neighborhood, and he had this little box on the floor of stuff that wasn't priced yet. Inside contained pristine vinyl copies of the soundtracks for Alien, Blade Runner (not the real Vangelis version, that's super-rare), The Shining, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, The Seven Samurai/Rashomon, Taxi Driver, and Russ Meyers' Vixen.

I couldn't buy any of them, not being in inventory yet, and I'm terrified to go back in and find out how much they actually cost :(

Speaking of Jerry Goldsmith, his score for the 1994 Shadow film is better than the actual movie -- particularly the Hotel. Beautiful.

Not too sure if it counts, but the Kung Fu Hustle soundtrack, while mostly classical Chinese music, is very cool. Like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PZhz5vvBjs) or this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wxCuq2OltE)

The vocal version is good, but that instrumental piece is fantastic. If I had the time and actual inclination, I'd re-cut the opening to fit that.

Okay, I just finished watching an anime called Dusk Maiden of Amnesia recently, and as awesome as the opening and ending themes are, there's an insert song in two episodes that is just hauntingly beautiful. I am sad that the full version without dialog hasn't been released yet, but still THIS SONG (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB4BcmYj6pk) :(

Also, I've been listening to Hans Zimmer's score for The Dark Knight Rises. Hauntingly beautiful as well as triumphant. And it's up for FREE HERE! (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=34498)

Damn, I guess that excludes the Soul Reaver/Raziel's theme. As it didn't originate from the game, but was actually made 2 years before the game came out. But there are some good soundtracks in there, that was made for the game it self.

In that case I love the music composed by Hans Zimmer.
Face/Off is on the top of my list, the music that plays in the chase scenes, and the music in the very end is really good.

Oh yeah. That music is fantastic. The only thing that I would change about it would be the spoken interludes. They're fun and interesting, but sometimes I just want the music.

I forgot those're there. I generally just skip around them or loop a track, typically Django, La Corsa 2nd Version, La Chiamavano King, I Got A Name, 100 Black Coffins, Freedom, Nicaragua, Un Monumento, or Trinity (Titoli). I've been looping one of those every day all month. But I listened to Django all the time even before it was in this movie. It's just such a good song, and I thank Tarantino for giving me the chance to hear some of these songs in the theater when I never would have otherwise. I can understand if not everyone would look at it that way, but to me...the movie was partially a concert of music hand picked for me. I can't think of another movie outside of the first two American Tail movies or Leone's westerns where I like every single track and every single track hits a type of music I like individually. What's also remarkable about Django was that it picked out songs I didn't even know I loved yet! But the volume...the sheer volume of PERFECT MUSIC. How often does that happen?

I expected once I read the track listing to be disappointed by the soundtrack, because it used so much less Morricone than I wanted. I'm just a Morriconephile. But once I heard the music, I knew it was perfect. There is a portion of Morricone's work that doesn't hit that sweet spot for me, though. And Ancora Qui is that type of music. It's such a good song. It's not my thing at all, though. It kind of reminds me of Bratja from Fullmetal Alchemist though. I feel like it could have been used more effectively to build on the romance. A piece like that can be used very powerfully. Once Upon A Time in the West has Finale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbLwhekwj5E)/Jill's America (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ienaYD6-ffA) by Morricone and A Fistful of Dynamite/Duck You Sucker!/Once Upon A Time in the Revolution/Giu la testa has Giu la testa, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37viV1niYL4) both extremely powerful pieces of music used to powerful romantic effect in both films. I expected that from this, because there are scenes that mirror scenes in Giu la testa, when Django is seeing visions of Broomhilda. If you see Giu la testa, you'll know what I mean. I really feel like Tarantino originally had something like that in mind for scenes like that, but I could be wrong. The way he did it was great, though. Leone went about it really slow, and Tarantino was going for a fast pace through a long film. I'll shut up now. :D

I've used WinAmp to manage my music collection (soundtracks or otherwise) for years. I like it a lot for various reasons, which are similar in nature to why I love Firefox and Rockbox.

Recently, I started helping a coworker to join the world of MP3s (she and her husband are still using CDs), while also helping her to find a good alternative to iTunes for managing her digital music (as she has an iPhone).

Enter MediaMonkey. On most every site I found, where there someone else was looking for the same thing I was, people kept saying MedaMonkey is the way to go. Well, I tried it. It's... fantastic. Though it might not have as many skins as Winamp, it's got a crapton of features that I love--most notably that I can set up the interface to be braindead simple (while Winamp is forever stuck being fairly complex.)

And, of course, with the CopyTrans iOS drivers (http://cnet.co/bBqSeC), there's no need for iTunes to be installed whatsoever.

Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement for MediaMonkey. It's just that I've been having a lot of fun with it, and the more I use it, the more impressed I am, because I keep finding ways to make it simpler to use than Winamp, while it increasingly becomes more and more superior to iTunes with regard to what it's capable of doing. And I really felt like mentioning it after I just now figured out how to duplicate iTunes' "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder functionality, without my having to think about rescanning like I do in Winamp, and with the files being moved instantly without needing to take time to process them like iTunes does.

I hate iTunes because it's a resource hog, and it confines the user to only be able to do certain things in just a certain limited way.

For example, the mp3 encoder in iTunes only has a few options (ie. "Fair; Good; Better; Best"). Also, iTunes doesn't want to work with any devices that are not made by Apple. I had to install a third-party software called "iTunes Agent" in order for to get iTunes to work with my father-in-law's SanDisk Sansa.

I also quite agree with this lengthy comparison (http://www.skytopia.com/project/articles/music/players.html) between Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, and MediaMonkey. Granted, it is a bit dated, as MediaMonkey is v4.0 now.

Just depends. I like the new soundtrack but they're both good.
