I gave the acidic spray bottle back to young Doc BEFORE using it to get the fur.

Is there anyway for me to get the bottle back from him or have I encountered a cruel bug?

If you can't get it back, that's quite the bug. I'm going to investigate this and get back to you. Can you reload a past save file for the time being?
