My game restarts to the beginning whenever I press esc

I'm at episode one. When I'm in the pharmacy and beyond, my game restarts to the beginning whenever I pause the game and tried to resume it. There's no save file that I can load. Can someone help me? This happened three times already and its very frustrating to lose all that progress.

I have to try that out, but it doesn't solve the root of the problem though. How do I save game and resume it going down the road?

This game has an autosave feature so it saves at several checkpoints. Those checkpoints are located after something big happens like huge dialogue or zombies attack.
