Now that I'm eagerly awaiting my Season 1 disc I was wondering if there are any fan-made or official DVD covers for download for Hit the Road. I would love to put my Hit the Road disc into a DVD case to put on my shelf next to Season 1.

This is the image that was the cover on my cd-rom version, which came in a modern dvd case:

I think there needs to be one thats exactly like the original box art. With the road map edging it all around.

When my Season 1 DVD ships, I'll create a "Hit the Road"-cover that matches the design of the S1-DVD... if you have the patience, that is.
If I had the resources to do one I'd put the HTR art where the Season One art is and where the ripped black parts on the top and bottom are, instead of it being just black it would be cool if it were the road map from the original box. On the bottom part is where "Hit The Road" in it's original font would go and as for the top, the Police Badge with "Sam & Max" would fit right in the middle kind of overlaping the rip where the map and art meet.
That's my idea!
I'm not sure if it would end up looking good though...

It's actually cheaper to buy it from Telltale themselves (the whole Season + Disc), or it is in the UK anyway.
EDIT: Just checked Amazon.de. You actually get the game cheaper than it is on the UK site, but it's only by £3 / €4.50(?).
If you really want the Telltale cover, you might as well cancel your Amazon preorder and order the series and disc from Telltale (or if you've already bought the series online, you might as well cancel the preorder and get the disc from them for the cost of shipping (€7.40) anyway)

i ordered from amazon and not from telltale because the one from amazon has a complete german translation, with the original voice actors from hit the road.. But the cover wouldn't match the disc. Both versions have different features.
It's blasphemy! It would be a shell of an truly great item.
Plus people who downloaded the game would be able to make bootlegs and I really don't want to see that.

I printed it out on Matte Photo paper, but Glossy Photo might look nice also. Also, I used Letter sized paper with the Borderless Printing option enabled. If your printer doesn't have Borderless, or if it requires somewhat large borders, you may have to locate some Legal sized Photo paper.

If you compare it to the original back, you'll see that there is some other rearrangement, as well as the horizontal flip. This was done for the best alignment with the other DVD case elements.

Actually the coffee stain doesn't show very much when printed (at least on my printer)... it's more visible on screen.
And why are you flattered? Because I stole your design? I could steal more of your stuff, if it does it for you...
It's cool to see stuff I made burgled and used to retheme the old game... People could have easily done it the other way around and done a box for Season One that was "more true" to the old LEC boxes or something like that, but it went the other way instead, and that's cool :)
Also, as some here know, I have a history of making fake (http://mojoart.mixnmojo.com/fan-art/_art_jake-rodkin_emi-box.html) game boxes (http://mojoart.mixnmojo.com/fan-art/_art_jake-rodkin_sam-and-max-action.html)... it was a mysterious hobby of mine 6-7 years ago, for some reason, so it's cool to see some well-done fake boxes derived from my now-amazingly-real real box art.
I think Meelworm's and Laserschwert's are both incredibly lovely. If I had a DVD box of HTR, I'd print them out.
I would also like to commend Jake on using the word burgled. That's awesome!

I'm still into my cover-design hobby which started years ago... it looks like I somehow have to get some 2D (http://img2.imagebanana.com/img/nve8xw4/history_covers.jpg)-design (http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/7435/24prev15dm4.jpg)-work (http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/2319/prev2hr9.jpg)-stuff (http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/3923/frprevnew2ni0.jpg) into my life, since job-wise I only deal with 3D- and video-stuff.
Are those all cover sets you did?
Laserschwert
09/10/2007, 05:20 pm
Yeah, somehow German labels tend to make each season-release of a TV-series look different, so I had to take on the task myself. The history-covers on the other hand started with "Kingdom of Heaven", since the German release didn't have the cover-design of the US-one... so I did that one (again, from scratch), and somehow I ended up doing three more.

I know, I've never paid any money to the site, but I'm very tempted. $8 for 50 downloads is pretty good. Alot of their stuff is top notch too.
You should set up a site for that stuff, Laserschwert, if you haven't already.

Although they're all available at the German crazycovers.net (which gives download-credits depending on forum-activity) I've put some of the stuff on several other forums as well... since "LucasArts Soundtracks" is already in a long-time sleep, I don't think it would be too good starting yet another site...
True enough. I meant more of just a personal site for your stuff, not themed to anything and without any implied community participation, but yeah.
I don't think it would be too good starting yet another site...
How about setting up something on Flicker? Should be enough to identify yourself as the creator, but good sharing tech to distribute the work.

Seriously though...These cover designs are great...Jake, I saw your Max Payne and Serious Sam ones ages ago...I thought they were awesome then and I still do...the Monkey Island one looks cool too...
The only thing is, now I have to debate which HTR one I like best...luckily I havent gotten around to printing it off yet...XD
Also, Laserschwert, if you were really keen on this stuff you could maybe even do requests...

I wouldn't call myself keen... and since these things really take a lot of time to create, I would never take requests, since the minimal amount of free-time I have can't be spent on things I don't have a use for. It's as easy as that :)

Do the colors match the S1-cover? They do on my printer, and I was really surprised by that. Obviously a simple monitor/printer-calibration by eye helped a big deal here.

It also has lots of custom covers though, e.g. for people who want all their games in DVD cases or jewel cases.
Laserschwert
09/13/2007, 05:48 am
Yeah, but there are other sites that deal with custom covers in a much more appealing way, like RixGrafix.com.
And since cdcovers.cc is offering CD-labels as well, it's pretty obvious it's made for people who prefer not to buy DVDs or games, but get them some other way.

What software do you guys use to make the covers the right size?
Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc, but the software is irrelevant in regards to getting the right size. Just create a new image with the following settings: 3240 x 2175 pixels, 300 dpi. When you print that out at 100%, it will be exactly the size you need.

Regardless of the program? I know that the whole image fits onto a normal size of paper but do most printers print that close to the edge?

Mine doesn't, but the Cannon at my design school does. Hell, it can print magazines on industry-grade glossy paper too!:D

The size at which an image is to be printed is stored in the file itself (as the dpi - dots per inch - value).
And DVD-covers aren't that big... I guess there's no printer that has a problem with printing at that size, since after all there's about half an inch space towards the edges of the paper on each side.

I don't think that's the same font. But if it is I believe I was told that the Sam & Max font is already a pre-existing font

I think it was an existing font that was edited to Steve's requirements.

It was part of a "Country Picnic" pack of fonts, IIRC.
Fontdiner.com
The font for episode titles, etc in Season One was "Square Meal." The font for "Sam & Max" is based on "Motel King," but for the official Sam & Max game logo itself, Steve Purcell did some tweaks to the lettering by hand to make it a bit more stylish.

Huh, well I'm having problems printing out the covers. When I right click and print and the photo printing wizard comes up the two best options are Full Page Fax print or Full Page Photo print. One rotates and centers it while the other crops and rotates. Neither of those look right. When I go into Photoshop and try to print I get an error saying the image is two big for the paper and there will be some clipping. When I click on print preview the area it wants to print is a blown up blurry portion of the cover spine.
So uh.....any tips?

One thing I've been doing is, I brighten the image by about 20% then print it with the paper set type the borderless 8.5x11, I brighten it because most printers will think that setting is photo paper and it will use more ink making the image darker. Just set the papers borders to all 0s, and I've been getting the best results printing at 99% size instead of 100.
Kinkos will let you sign into a computer and print off a color 11"x17" page and leave without making eye contact with an employee :) I every morning at PAX in the Kinkos next to the convention center, printing off a zillion signs, and only bugged a guy the first day.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to print this cover off. I bought photo-paper and I'm all ready to go but each program warns me about the picture being squished or cutoff. I know my printer prints boarder-less too (It was in the booklet!).
I tried splitting the cover into two peices but undercoverxp won't have it.
Nero is useless also since the cover is too big for it's templates.
Dvdit's program is a joke.
Trying to print it through "paint" is useless because the print preview shows 10% of the cover with the rest cut off.
I guess I'll go hunt for more programs and such. I'm determined!

Well, at least I might have an idea what the problem might be. It looks like somehow the images lose their dpi-info when being uploaded, since the downloaded images kinda seem to get a dpi-value of 72, which of course makes it way to big when printed. But still, UnderCoverXP should be the solution there, because it allows to determine the exact printing size...

So after a lot of digging I've found that the problem lies in my HP printer. It won't print that close to the edge of 8.5x11 paper because it loses it's grip of the paper toward the end. There is a way around it though. Instead of trying to re-explain it I'll just quote it:
"I was having the exact same problem as you. The problem is because the printer doesn't have anything to hold onto to continue feeding the paper through. So you have two options:
1) Use legal size paper 8.5 x 14
2) Cut a rectangular piece of paper out to attach to the bottom of
your 8.5 x 11 paper, then specify it as 'legal' under your print
options
I have some nice thick photo HP paper that is 8.5 x 11, so I've been using option #2. It's kind of a cheesy fix but it works and won't cut off any of your cover."
Source (http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-34092.html)
I'm out of paper and I don't have any tape, so once I resupply myself I'll give it a go and let you know if it worked!

I got it to print on the photo paper! I'm impressed with the quality but I have to say... for some reason it printed a little bright
Everyone's printer will print it differently.... because every printer uses different ink, uses different colormatching settings, etc, etc.
When we printed the real covers to the Season One discs, the printers sent us back proofs to see if the colors were too bright, too dark, etc, etc, and for all the poster prints and stuff that we do, we always go to the printer and do color checks as the first few come off the press, to make sure that they don't look off for some reason. For the Season One cover print (the "Street" print), Steve spent about 40 minutes working with the pressmen running different ink levels, until he got the press printing colors he was pleased with.
When you print at home, if you want something to be exact, you probably have to be willing to go through the same process, but with your home inkjet :)

isn't photopaper to thick to be used inside a dvd-case?

Those aren't pictures he took. It's a program that you load DVD covers into and it renders them into a 3D image. I have one, but it has a stupid watermark :(
The photopaper is pretty thick, but it still works.

I think you're talking about IMANDIX, but I've done it a little more "hands on" with 3dsmax, a professional 3D-application. And 3D-graphics is actually what I DO professionally... unfortunately the need for DVD-covers is quite minimal, so that's just a hobby.

Hey, i know this is WAY old, but I'm kind of nostalgic right now and wanted to make the manual's and dvd cover's for my old lucas cd games.
I have the original cds alone and wanted to put them in DVD cases with some of the original box art and manuals so they kind of feel "complete"and look great on the shelf next to my other games and movies.
The dvd cover for hit the road made by "meelWORM" is really, really great.
But i also want to re-create the manual, I took the one from replacementdocs.com, but it's not complete, it doesn't have some of the mini-comics, so i have been kind of re-creating the manual (also in full color) but i'm missing at least one page, i found it in the french manual, but besides being in french, it's a really terrible scan.
So i was wondering if anyone has the original manual and is willing to scan that page for me? (it's the breakfast at the dinner page, and maybe a better scan of max's paper bag page).
