Can't give the toast to Wallace

[Mr. Flix]

I am stuck in Act I of Episode I: I have collected all three breakfast parts (Eggs, toast and honey), but while I'm able to give the egg and honey to Wallace, when I try to do the same with the toast, Gromit will just shake his head.

I tried a new game and doing everything word for word from the official walktrough, but the result is the same.
Any suggestions what I or the game might have done wrong?

My son and I used several hours trying to give the breakfast items in different orders, looking for other items in the house etc - Wallace simply wouldn't take the toast. Now I see it's a bug in the game - figures!
We're also playing a GOG version of the game.
