I'm curious, how many people in our forums own a copy of TF2, or are planning to make a purchase of the ever popular Orange Box (http://orange.half-life2.com/) from Valve?
Because in Telltale San Rafael Branch, there has been a lot of recent playage of TF2. And we are looking to open up a server for the TTG team and forum members, so i was just curious to see how many people would actually give a hoot. Holla back at me yo!

TFC was my life in High School. I'd love to give TF2 a shot but I can't see that happening soon. I own Half-Life 2 but I haven't touched it. Mainly because I need more space on my computer :(
Maybe one day though! Hopefully TF2 lives up to the original.
Edit: That orange box looks like a pretty neat... I was wondering what it was all about. I might pick it up sometime. I won't mind paying for the original HL2 again cuz I got the copy I have for only $5 :P

Ya. I was a HUGE fan of TFC. That game was the shit back in the day. TF2 is a little different. Its a lot faster and its a lot more noob friendly, but they've done some great stuff.

Do you know if its gonna be cross platform? For some reason I don't think it is. But I'm probably gonna get the game for the 360 as well. I have too many friends on XBOX Live that I can't let down.
ShaggE
09/27/2007, 11:36 am
I doubt it'll be cross platform. (Thank gods, since I suck enough already... I don't need to face the greatly advantaged keyboard-and-mousers on top of everything else :P)
But yeah, once I GameFly the Orange Box, get a Gold account, and replace my shoddily made stock headset that broke merely because I dared to actually use it (the shame!), I'm all for some cel-shaded shooty-shooty.
I'm christened on Live as ShaggE21 if you or anyone else here would like to expand my laughably small friends list. :D

Did they get rid of the medic's ability to infect people? That was my favorite thing to do, next to conc jumps.

Ahhh... I remember many great late nights of sneaking into enemy respawn's and infecting everyone.
One of my favourite things I used to do with a friend was sneak into the enemy respawn in murderball (think that's the map) and build sentry guns. There weren't any defensive guns that would kill us so we could just sit in there and catch people in these cycles of death/respawning.
I love the way TF2 looks though. I remember when they first released screenshots of the the way the game was originally gonna be. It looked like another Counter Strike game which was sad. I'm glad they scrapped it.
I just watched one of the TF2 trailers and I am drooling. I love how they make light of the soldier rocket jump. It's neat that in the original game it was a technique that players deveploed with the class (I think). I also love how they made this more like a cartoon which really suits the game. I don't think TFC was originally meant to be like that, but it just turned into this hilarious non-serious game.
NickTTG
09/27/2007, 03:35 pm
Ya the way that TF2 was originally planned out, was a very serious tactical shooter. Where one player was the commander who had a tactical birds eye RTS view of the battlefield. And his job was to place buildings and helpful structures for the team, and lay out routes and paths. It got scrapped because people weren't co-operating. But it sounded like a fresh take on online FPS'.
And sadly, they got rid of the medics ability to infect AND conc jumps. But the game is balanced very well in regards to power vs speed. There is a class for everyone. You can suck hard at FPS' and be at the top of the ladder. Classes like Medic allow noobs to just heal teammates from a distance with the medic gun, and get support points when the person you're healing kills someone. You basically get a point every time you do something good for the team. The scoreboard doesn't display kills.
Everyone should get the game. Then we could have forum matches ;)
EDIT: And actually we do have a Steam Community page, but I was told that it was only for the Telltale Team. You'd have to bug jake or someone ;) Some guy already made one for fans, but I don't think he's really into managing it, so someone should make a real one. I'll join! Hit me up on steam. SteamID: Shinobi_Tdotcom

Heh! The medic can shoot syringes at people, but I Don't know if they can infect. Conc grenades are gone. Fortunately the game is still really fun. Most of the things that they cut out, in my opinion, really help streamline and define the classes better, so people are now all doing their jobs instead of lobbing grenades at each other left and right.

Sweet thx for the add! And ya, when i go back and watch the first 2 trailers (not the "Meet the..." ones) all of the animations you see the characters do are in game. Those are all gameplay shots! Totally awesome. The game has seamless animations that blend together with whatever the character is doing beautifully.

Yes I've got Orange Box, mainly because of TF2. I'll gladly stop by a TellTale server for a game or two sometime. Too bad I'm European so I won't be able to be around at the peak times.
QWTF was the first online game I really played. And boy did I play it. :p
I hadn't played FPS games in some five years before TF2. What a giant wave of nostalgia it was to run into friends from ten years back on the TF2 servers. :)
Just toss me the name of the server if one is put up and I'll drop by for sure.

I've been playing through Half life 2 and it's been pretty awesome. I feel bad for Gordon Freeman though.
"Okay Gordon, you'll need to take the coast"
"But it's Antlion breeding season!"

Maybe that's why they are so enamored with him even though he hasn't spoken one word throughout the whole ordeal:
NPC: My god, it's Gordon Freeman in the flesh! I've heard the stories about you and have been looking forward to meeting you ever since I joined the resistance!
GORDON: ...[shoots something, then runs away]

I wouldn't know. There were some firewall issues, but nothing a few tricks left and right (DMZ, especially) couldn't get past. The problem was more of getting enough people interested and available at the same time.

TF2 and Portal both make my computer crash. Looks like 3 years is too long to go without an upgrade :(
I've gone 2 years and am getting 50+ fps with everything dialed up... so you're barely over the limit, it seems.
ShaggE
10/12/2007, 10:51 am
Isn't Portal based on the original Source engine? (as opposed to the beefed up Source in E1, E2, and TF2) It seemed that way from the videos I saw, and you'd think a 3 y/o PC could pull off old Source without many issues. :S
... no its using the "new" Source engine. It's got realtime motion blur and the dynamic light exposure stuff, all the other crazy doodads. It's still the Source engine, though, which is pretty scalable.
ShaggE
10/12/2007, 01:05 pm
Oh, I must have seen some old videos, then. (or they just didn't feature the newness)
You're definitely right about the scalability. Even though it's no longer impressive visually (for the most part, that is. It still can be quite prettiful at times.), it's amazing what it can do on lesser PCs.
And from a modder's POV... godlike.
Wait... what were we talking about again? (Sorry, Source is the new Build engine in my eyes, I can't help but rave about it :P)
source is no longer impressive visually in general? or do you mean it's just not nice looking on older PCs?
because if you meant the first thing, you would be mistaken.

I do mean in general, but only because I'm too observant for my own good. The second a polygon overlaps, or a texture repeats too often, I notice it and end up focusing on it. Like the wall textures in HL2: Surprisingly low-res compared to everything else in the game. Blame my analytical personality :P
Plus, I've been spoiled by stuff like BioShock and Crysis.
(Disclaimer: I'm not one of those that actually judges a game based on graphics. HL2 is one of my favorite post-2000 shooters. I just tend to notice tiny things like that.)

10/14/2007, 09:36 am
I built my computer to be a mid-level HL2 box for the first release in 2004 and it did alright. I just managed to lower a few settings such that the latest releases won't crash, and Portal is currently rocking my face.
Ill never get anything as long as steam backs it :P kiss my arse steam !!! sorry.. never liked any of the games made with source that were FPS.

yea I should have been more specific! I do hate the steam system etc.. as for the non source games I dont need steam for most of em.. darwinia is a great example.. dont need steam to play that.. it was freeware until they got ahold of it.
I have to admit my wording was off but yes.. I do like some of the games offered.. :P Thanks for pointing that out XD.
Darwinia was freeware? Do you mean shareware? I believe it had a demo, and then you paid to unlock the rest. Darwinia is still available off-Steam, direct from the developer (http://store.introversion.co.uk/), as is Defcon, their newest game.

Actually, it isn't shareware either. It is simply a full game that one can download a demo (which is an entirely new level in itself) for. Calling Darwinia shareware would be like calling the new S&Ms shareware because they have demos! :p
I'm available to play TF2. In fact, I could be the medic! Bonesawing people is fun.

Demos are shareware! Welcome to the 90s ;)

Yeah there's no much differentiating shareware from a demo except I guess shareware was propagated by people giving their friends a copy since downloading stuff from the internet took forever. Now a lot of demos are huge and too big for even a CD, plus it's easier to say "go download the demo" instead of "I will burn you a copy of the demo!". Also 'demo' is a shorter word and sounds cooler than 'shareware'. Shareware sounds more friendly though.

Well, my SteamID is 'Mack Daddy' (imagine that) and since I live here in California I usually play on west coast servers preferably with a ping of 50 or less. Telltale does (or did) have a TF2 server a few months back as I recall but I never saw anybody on it.
I'm a member of the Telltale group on the Steam Community so you can look me up if you want or if you find me online playing sometime just say "Hi!".

I occasionally play the PC version. Steam ID Dedlok. Feel free to shoot me an invite but play may die down for a bit due to a certain game coming out sunday. BD

On Steam I'm known as James Bondage. It's, eh, a funny name but I've had it since I played Duke Nukem 3D over the school network (yes, that wasn't allowed) with friends. :P

You guys should definitely go for it, I would love to crit rocket all of you in the face. Just curious, how many player slots are you going for, and where are you planning to get your server? By the way my Steam ID is Quackingstick [CP], if anyone here would like to add me.

If you really want to play a cross-platform match, get Shadowrun.

It's the address of our server. You should be able to connect to it in TF2 (if it's running right now). Also, join this Steam group!

Thanks a bunch, I just joined. By the way, I know I'm sounding noobish, but I don't know how to connect to servers using an adress or an IP. Could some one show me how?
EDIT: Found it out, no need to tell me.

How have I missed this topic! (Maybe because I only got the game a month ago or so?) I would be up for playing around on the Telltale server! I'm pretty terrible at TF2 so I don't like to jump into random servers and get stuck playing against a bunch of expert strangers.
