When you are re-playing the game to change who stays and who doesn't, do you have to play the whole episode over? i.e. if you want Ben to live, do you have to play ep. 4 from the beginning? Or is there a way to start at a specific checkpoint?

You can rewind to the specific chapter of the episode you would like to change and play from there.
But you can't just change a decision an quit.
If you want to change an early decision you will have to play through the rest of the episode to register it.

I personally can't. When I want to see how a certain choice plays out I didn't take before, I actually have to make a whole new playthrough back to episode 1. So to see different ways episode 5 can go and see new dialogue, I have to play through episode 1, 2, 3, and 4 all over again haha. Just my OCD I guess, same happened with Mass Effect. Couldn't play 3 differently without first replaying 1 and 2 differently as well.

Yeah, just rewind. Changing Ben's fate is especially easy, but others take more work if you want to change something from an earlier episode.

I know that feel.
