I think I'll probably go to work, stay there 8 or so hours, then since it's a Friday I might go out and drink.
All this will culminate in my sleeping in late the next day, and then probably playing Halo or something.
I hope that wasn't too terrifying a glimpse of the future!

The Mayans will just make a new calendar. My calendar runs out every year and the world hasn't ended yet. :p
and then probably playing Halo or something.
The horror!

Well the 21st is a Friday, so I expect everyone being excited for the weekend... and the suicide/pregnancy rate being higher than normal that day...
EDIT:Oh and FYI, the Mayan calendar already expired, they kinda didn't have leap year in their calendar.

Except the Mayan calendar isn't expiring. They found a new one that goes on for longer.

What makes people think that the Mayans totally must have seen something coming that far into the future that all other cultures regardless of knowledge or technology can't see anyway?

Or rather "how could they have predicted the end if they couldn't predict another continent of people finding them".

To the original question of what I'll be doing - getting drunk (provided I remember) because hey, any excuse.
To where the conversation's turned - the Mayans knew jack shit. There is no way some mystical prophecy about the end of the world is going to come true because it's a load of made up crap. And that's even if this nonsense was accurate - I've seen several reports that the date's wrong.
In short - not worried, but will possibly get drunk anyway, if only to try and cope with working near Christmas.

They did. Sort of. They and the Aztecs both had predictions of the Spaniards arriving the year they did.

Well, the cool thing about the Mayans is that even without the technology, they were still able to have an incredibly accurate calendar, which points to having some sort of way of precisely measuring astronomical occurrences. That alone makes them pretty cool.
Now, they could have possibly predicted the end of the world if they had been able to somehow plot the trajectory of an asteroid and then predict what year that asteroid would hit the planet based on its trajectory. Of course, they're a few years off in that instance. There isn't a large enough astroid due to hit until 2018.

That's the day of the Senior Christmas Formal. Unfortunately, I was not able to talk the party committee into a "Ho-Ho-Holy Shit It's The Apocalypse!" theme.

The Mayan calendar ends - or one of them does. Nothing in Mayan scripture actually says anything about the end of the world in 2012. And even if there WAS such an odd entry, these are still the guys who calculated the beginning of the earth to have been in 3114 BC, so let's just assume their scientific knowledge as well as their skill in prophecies is rather limited.

Yeah, they completely cut out a good chunk of the Egyptian civilization with that date. And the Sumerians apparently just showed up with Adam with city-states, writing, and the wheel already all invented somehow. Maybe an angel gave it to them.

No. I saved it because I never liked Rap. Especially not in the 90s.

The native conception, and this includes the Aztecs, was that the world occurred in epochs each ensuing in a new age. Each epoch ended with a disaster. In the year the Aztec epoch ended, which was shorter than the Mayan's or more accurately, split into smaller segments, the epoch coincided with the arrival of Cortez. However depending on which culture consulted, efforts had to be put into preventing an actual end of the world.

Matthew 24:35-44
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

I expect him to come walking through that door every hour until I'm ninety-five.
There, that should do it.
Yes, I know trying to game the system against an omnipotent deity is hazardous to your health and soul, but I gotta try. Call back in seventy-two years and we'll discuss how well it worked.

It's kinda odd, but in Praying with Jesus, the prayer that accompanies Matthew 24:36-44 (or Mark 13:32; Luke 17:26-30, 34-35; 12:39-40) says this:
"O God, I never want to live in complacent sloth, soggy in religious routine, smug in pious satisfcation. I want to be expectant and ready for the next thing that you are doing today and again tomorrow. Amen."

A headline on CNN.com today for an opinion column was: "What can we learn from the collapse of Maya?"
Of course, my first impression was, "Ummmm, don't go up against the Telltale Tool?"
They have since changed the headline. Spoilsports.
