Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead

Hey hey! Sam & Max episode 203 is almost here, and we've posted the trailer, some screenshots, a piece of concept art, and a blot of teaser text to the Night of the Raving Dead website (http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/nightoftheravingdead). Also, there's a blog post (http://www.telltalegames.com/community/blogs/id-293). It was potentially inaccurately paraphrased to me that the core of this episode was originally conceived by Steve Purcell,* who, when asked what should be in Season Two, blurted out "Eurotrash vampires." So, there you go.

Take a look at the new stuff, and discuss away!

Jawoll!

Oh the beginning looks very good and makes you even feel a little bit like in a Murnau/Schreck movie but as soon as the colour and the rave jumps in the magic is over and it more reminded me of the popular demo by farbrausch ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq-aLBNwpPQ ).

Would have been very cool to play a game in the silent movie style!

By the way shouldn't "dead" be "Toten" instead of "Todes"? Would be "Die Nacht der ausgeflippten Toten" then (plural). Also "Freiberufliche Polizei" sounds more reasonable than "Unabhängige Polizei".

That... that... that might just be the best trailer ever, for any game.

I thought the trailer for Moai was the best one, but this is even better. :D
I think it really catches the Sam & Max delirium. I am especially intrigued by the screenshot with that new arcade sequence...
P.S.: What's the vampire saying at the end? "Look at me, I'm so..."?

NickTTG

My sources tell me he says, "Look at me, I'm so edgy and subversive."

For one sweet moment, i thought that maybe the whole episode would be in black & white. That would have been fantastic.

Did I see that screen shot right? Are we going to have a Paper Boy mini-game involving delivering CDs to the undead at break-neck speeds? That's going to be one nice mini-game!:D

The vampire sounds like a Sacha Baron Cohen character. :D

EDIT: If you go to GameTap, you'll see a hint of more things to come like the return of the Commissioner, the next Desoto upgrade (which I'm happy to see finally), the reuse of the Secret Service dance from 104, Sam's Banjo, and a Sam & Max meets GTA scenario with the new mini-game.

OMGWTFLOL! Best trailer ever. Love the silent movie effect, the "German" (ish?) title cards [with great approximate English translations] and the music.... and then we do get a little bit of a picture of our new Vampire character. This is indeed going to be a very very good episode, I can tell already! :)

can't wait, it made me wanna break down and dance... and i did... and people saw.... and they laughed. but i can't hold my lack of dance skills against sam and max, i still can't wait! and good for me i barely have to, only two weeks till it comes out! aren't episodic games the best! viva telltale, viva SAM AND MAX!

Yeah, I've already been all over the translation... and by the way, the best translation for "Freelance Police" would be "Freischaffende Polizei"... ("freiberuflich" passt grammatikalisch nicht so ganz... oder heißt das semantisch? egal... ;) )

Correct me if I am wrong, but were you guys inspired by Castlevania in the creation of that vampire character? He looks so much like Issac from Curse of Darkness in both behavior (being a bit flamboyant) and appearance despite that the vampire in S&M doesn't have tattoos.

pic of issac (from the castlevania dungeon site):

Steve Purcell and Dave Bogan might have been inspired by that, but more likely both characters go back to a more common vampire archetype... I think this mostly because I don't know if Steve has played that game.

And they totally ignored the umlauts! Those things are not just for show (as in rock band names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_umlaut)) you know. ;) Bonus points for effort, though.

And I loved the fake-English subtitles. Sam & Max: The Not-on-Staff Police!

I've watched the trailer on two different computers with two different internet connections and both times the video lagged throughout. Is there going to be a downloadable version?

Jake
01/31/2008, 12:09 am
downloadable version (http://files.telltalegames.com/samandmax/videos/season2/nightoftheravingdead/sammax203trailer.zip)

Also, GameTrailers.com has the video in a zillion different formats, so that's always worth checking out.

Thanks!

The best part of the trailer IMO is at the end with the shots of Sam & Max in slow motion. Perfectly executed!
I need to make that sequence into an animated gif.

Yikes! I didn't realize how big the trailer is until I finished downloading it. I hope my work doesn't notice the excessive bandwidth use, lol. Although I'm on my laptop using wireless, so maybe they won't be able to find out who.

, I do not find Noe spontaneously so now; that does not fit both, whereby from the tongue likes to go to a lighter:O) Hauptache it is "unabhaegig" any longer, and the error with "DEAD" and "death" is changed. I always ask myself, who is pulled with localizations to rate. Beautifully that the Gruselversion into German comes along. Probably we have to owe this Nosferatu. ;O)

Awesome Trailer dudes ! The twenties horror-movie style is realy original and funny and the "not-optimal" German subtitles and the "even-less-optimal" English subsubtitles only add to the wacky flavor of Sam & Max.
Even though I'm glad to hear that the release date has been forwarded, it's a shame that I won't be able to get it when it comes out. With the start of the new semester and work I'll probably won't be able to download it until late thursday afternoon. On the other hand, the server will probably be less occupied then, so it has it's advantages.

You know it's kind of a running gag through the history of video games as still a lot of games lack a proper translation and i'm not even speaking about spoken text here, just written stuff. So from time to time it's just fun pointing that out. We have 3d graphics with millions of colours and not even jaggies are secure anymore but one thing remains for sure, those funny translations. :O)

the part during the "sepia" scene was organ music. the suspensful kind. the dance scene was techno. the danceable head-bobbing kind. :D.

Lines said by the Vampire "This promotional material is hella whack, yo! Hit it!" and at the end "Hoooooooooo! Look at me! I'm so edgy and subversive!" Both said with a German accent. Kinda one of those you'd expect a goth to have.

Popped in to say that I'm loving the 203 trailer, just watched it. Very funny.
I think I'll give this episode a bigger try than I did 202 after the disappointment of 201 (though I loved the Helsinki plaque :) )

The Zombie / Vampyre models weren't that cool but Max dance moves and the cepia intro was magnificent.

I still wish the prod values and texture/model quality was higher.

Linque
02/11/2008, 03:37 pm
Ok I just re-watched it. I'm not lying when I'm saying that the 203 trailer is the first thing out of the Telltale S&M franchise I've found genuinely hilarious, I mean laugh out loud funny. The German stuff is most radical, and the dance section with Sam's pistol moves and Max raving is just too funny to look at without smiling.

Good job, so far I can see why Jake said he thinks the next three are the most solid stuff Telltale has yet produced. :)

Am I really the only one that was seriously put off by the vampire/eurothrash guy? I mean come on! The trailer starts out wonderfully with it's Nosferatu theme and subpar translation. It has Sam, it has Max, it has zombies, it has vampires. I'm in a state of total blissful euphoric glee.

Enter sound.

No. No. No. No... No. :(

Telltale, my hopes were pretty high set on this episode. Really, it should be impossible to fail with these listed ingredients. Please prove my worries wrong. Please, please, make sure this new character is funnier than he seems from the little we see of him in the trailer.

Other than that you're doing a swell job. :p

wow... just finished the episode, it made up for a lot... and even made up for all of 202's short comings

some good puzzles, a decent length, lots of goofy things you have to deal with, and just as many plot turns...

im actually impressed with this one, which is saying a lot after how much i bad mouthed 202... but for those of you who hate re-occuring locations, heh... (thats all im saying for the moment)

ill start a hate it or love it thread tomorrow as to avoid spoilers, but for the moment ll i have to say is... my I.Q. must have dropped 10 points from playing this episode, lol

To be completely honest, I'm not entirely sure what to expect, but I have a feeling that Flint will be very important in the next episode, which is awesome. I also have the feeling that there'll be some crazy new location, either back in time or in space (which I doubt since it was sorta already done last season)... Or crazier.

Chariots of the Dogs makes me think of either the Romans or strange paranormal something (Chariots of the Gods), the latter being much more appropriate for Bosco. A Mystery Vortex-like location would be really neat, now that I think about it.

Either way, I'm glad Flint's finally getting (or so I think) a big role. Bosco too.

Oh, and this isn't really a spoiler, but the typewriter ribbon is the best item in the series.

Update from Telltale's offices: It is 9pm (21:00) on Tuesday night, and everyone has gone home for the evening except Brendan and me. Again, that's late in the evening on Tuesday night, the night before the game comes out. The other people who work here during the day are at home for the night, and the game comes out on Wednesday, the 13th of February -- tomorrow -- so there are probably at least twelve hours until we release the game on the site.

Which is an improvement over last season, where the episodes came out around 10-11(1-3 or 4), but later it ended up around 8-9(4 to 5 or 6) I seem to remember. 6-7 pm is much better for me, because then I don't have to sit up all night to finish the episode and risk oversleeping for school the next day :o (yes, I skiped some fridays last season because of sam & max ;) - I'm just that curious).

Oh well, before we know it, we'll be back, counting the days until the next release(I won't, this season, I'm too busy for that, but the rest of you hardcore fans probably will).

A good employer makes work 24/7 :D

Well.. I think that a specific launch-time could bring down the whole download server (or at least slows down data communications) , since everyone tries to download the same game at the same time.

A good employer makes work 24/7 :D

You may have noticed that I was posting at near midnight earlier in this thread and am now posting at 7:15 am the next morning, so I hope you'll cut me some slack!

Also, we don't give a specific launch time because if something goes wrong at the last minute (surprisingly frequent when you're trying to get all the little details lined up for something like a software launch), thousands of people would start trying to access the site when there was nothing to access (or worse, something broken!). Giving a more open launch time ("Wednesday morning, Pacific time") gives us room to account for last minute disasters in a way that, at worst, will only make some Australians grumble at us for being vaguely later than they hoped, instead of the whole world trying to kick down our door because the game isn't out the exact minute we said it would be.

Everyone keeps saying things like that, but it really doesn't work that way. Our downloads are done by the same company that handles Steam and XBLA. I think we'll be alright no matter how many people show up at the same time.

Here's a fun fact about Norwegian laws:

If you are a plumber, you are allowed to fix the neighbors sink, because that is being kind. But you are not allowed to fix your own sink, because that is tax fraud.

Same if own a forest. If you own a forest, you are allowed to chop down a tree and give to your neighbor, so that he can use it as a Christmas tree. That is considered being a kind neighbor, and giving a gift. But you are not allowed to chop down a tree and use it yourself as a Christmas tree, because this is tax fraud.

Yes for me the zombie mini-game is a reference to paperboy, no doubt... but what makes me laugh out loud is the Mortal Kombat reference, just excellent... also the Frankenstein Junior one was really funny, I do love this kind of running gag (as much as the mexican happy birthday singer).

This episode was really cool, the script is getting better and better, wide new locations, animations are a lot better and there is more too (dancing Sam&Max, the slow and detailed soul sucker machine, flint's entry, max in the background trying to catch his soul), it was just as difficult I would like it to be, I managed to finish it in about 4 hours without any external help but three very useful Max's tips... no really I'm happy :)

And I love useless objects, and more when you have huge comments when you try to use them (like something like "yes I'm sure it would stop jesse jame's hand to shoot-up the place, if only it wasn't a useless typewriter ribbon")

It was never in the movies. Typewriter Ribbons were used in the early Resident Evil games as save points. Every time you found a typewriter ribbon, you could save your game. Annoyed the hell out of their players from what I understand.
