Better shift your peepers over to the blog, since I bet that's where the news will break first.
The hardcover stuff is very very close now, finally. I should have more news in detail in the coming days.

April fool!
Nope. The April Fool's joke was learning after a week of unreturned phone calls that our rep at the printer's is suddenly no longer with the company...
We're plugging away. Stuff is happening. We'll show it off real soon.
i hate it when this happens...and nobody tells you.
good thing i have my softcover to read. also, now i have time to earn the money for the hardcover and don't need to sell my car.

Must be a pretty crappy car if you need to sell it to buy a book... :P Can't you sell the tape deck instead?
no, the tape deck is broken...the car isn't crappy at all, but i don't need it at the moment, because my employer supplies me with a new car every 6 months..:p

I assume it's one of the "extra-pages" (at least I think I remember you mentioning the hardcover getting some extra-pages over the paperback).

No extra pages in the hardcover. I think there might be an extra blank page because of the printing process, though.

Woohoo!! That'll show those cheapskates who only got the paperback! :p
(AND, I was confusing those with the extra-apges who are generally added in the re-release... paperback included)
That could be the inner pattern for the paper jacket that most hardcover books come in. Kind of makes me wonder what the actual hardcover looks like naked.
...Go ahead and run with that. I don't care. :D

not saying what part of the book this is... but hey
it's probably one of those things you put inside books to remember the page you stopped reading or you want to read again or something...i think it's called bookmark, but i also thought those things were in your browser. maybe it's attached to those ribbon-thingies the really huge books have...like the bible. anyway, a bookmark would be totally nice, since sth doesn't have numbered pages...and i usually use stuff that's sortof important like the letter that reminds me to do my tax declaration or even money, which i forget to take out and find it again years later when it's lost all it's worth. so, i'm voting for bookmark...on the other hand it might be something completely different.

Its the bookplate, which will be pasted/stuck to the inside cover. Steve's signature will be on the bun. :D
might be...or each books number will be printed on the bun. if it was a bookplate and have steve's signature on it, wouldn't that imply that the books would belong to him? they are normally used to express ownership, right?
Somehow, if it is a book plate, I see Steve's signature on the mustard dollup and the book's number on the bun.

I'm pining for my hardbook...I hope it gets printed and shipped soon, as it's going to be my substitute now that the last episode of Season 2 has been released, and we have a long wait until the next season!
Barring insanity, the hardcover is going off to the printer this week... at which point I'll be able to start talking about it! :)
Because insanity never happens here....
Which is a wonder given the two comedy franchises you guys were given licensing rights to.

The only unwanted gifts I have were some bars of soap and a wash cloth with 'Holland' sewn onto it (penpals...gotta love them). I think wearing bars of soap would just make the bullets go through me quicker and the wash cloth would only clean the bullets on their way out
..hey, nothing like a clean bullet. you know how dirty those things usually are? if you're really shot at a lot, you should consider to soak the washcloth with some antiseptic-stuff as well.
i totally like the idea of attaching it to a belt and carrying it around all the time. that way you can hold it aloft and cite from it whenever appropriate. i really hope it get's one or more of those ribbon-bookmarks expensive books use to have, so you have quick access to the best lines when citation is needed..

I'm too lazy to read 16 pages... if it was already asked I appoligize, but do we have a ship date set for the hardback yet?
(and I love your idea, wisp, of keeping it with you to quote lol --- that's what smartphones and ebooks are for!)
The hardcover contents are now totally at the printer. They're checking the files over the next few days, to make sure that they're good to print, then they'll print off a test proof, which we have to approve, and then they'll get printing! We'll know very soon when the books are expected to actually start rolling off the press.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. That looks amazing!
We estimate June for shipping.
If this estimate is correct, then June will be a good month for me. Not only will I have the Sam & Max: Surfin' the Highway hardcover coming my way but also my Victorian Romance Emma - Season 1 box set and my Maj. Motoko Kusanagi figure. This means, of course, that May will go tortuously slow. I await with eager anticipation.

im not sure if this has been asked before as the thread is so long and the question could be anywhere in the forums
does the number on the hardcover correspond with the order in which they were ordered?
will the last person to order get #2500 and first get #1? I know steve gets a few and staff of course :P so will it start at 50? 60? and what are my odds of a decent numbered one off ebay now that I can afford a nice 300$ shipment :P muhahah store is about to be......raided.
anyway just want to know if ill get one of everything now then hunt a low number one for collection purposes, might take years to see early number ones if ever :P
BTW an original TPB surfin the highway sold on ebay for 20$ with a sam and max card. I didnt bid cause I have 4 cards and 3 TPB's. I dont wanna horde but I was so tempted!

I don't think postage was that much actually. I think it wasn't more than $10. I don't think customs would be too much of a worry either, I've got stuff shipped that was worth more and larger that I didn't get charged for by customs.

i didn't mean that he's not deserving to have copy number 1 or anything...and giving it to his family is excelent. i just found the idea that someone keeps copy of his own book that he signed himself..a bit strange. steve knows how his signature looks and if his copy would be the only unsigned/unnumbered it would be even more special. sorry, if i sounded a bit like a jerk back there...

...Rare Harry Potter books?
I mean, I know there was the handwritten collection of fairy tales and myths and such, but Harry Potter isn't really a series that's highly valuable, considering they're in most any bookstore you find.
Ist editions of some of the 1st books are valuble cos they are rarer, 1st eds. of the later books of course aren't.
people, please...this thread is about the awesome book, so could you stop discussing harry potter or that spore...i don't know what that is, but it sounds infective...diseasewise that is.
..okay maybe surfin the highway is not the book, but still pretty good...probably a lot better than potter.:D

So as is pointed out in the comments section of the blog post, it's a bad idea to cancel now. No problems there, I couldn't possibly imagine a reason that anyone would want to.
However, is it possible to change the address the order ships to? Ordered some time ago when I was on my campus, but now that I'm home for the summer, I'd prefer not to wait for campus mail to forward it to me.
Looking forward to it either way.

No, which is why some people may want to do a last-minute cancellation. (And I understand about having The Effigy Mound on your order, but we might be able to help with this if you email support@telltalegames.com and explain the situation.)

This a remake of the 1995 book. And their were some more stories made of sam and make in other reprinted issues which this one does not have and well they shouldn't have made 25 pages in colour in the first place.A colour and black and white hybrid book is kinda weird. It should have either been in color or black and white not both

You're not that much into comics, right?
Yes
in the introduction of this new surfin the highway edition...or better the softcover version...steve wrote something about what is included and what is not. if i am not totally wrong it should contain every finished comic in it's original form, except one that was colored in a different way as before, but also like it was originally supposed to be. so, the webcomic is not in it and another unfinished and also unpublished story, that steve purcell has still lying in his drawer or something...and of course the sketches for sam&max are not in sth, but in the sketchbooks.
anyway...the hardcover looks really totally awesome..not to say marvelous. it's a lot thicker than the softcover. did you use heavier paper for it?
also, it's nice to read you included a bookmark like i suggested..since i am usually right and adding stuff i like to a book is bound to make it more incredible...or ruin it completely. in case of the hardcover this wouldn't been possible however..even i can't flaw such greatness. okay, enough of that...take my money and send me that piece of literature already.

Although this is a re-release of the original book, it DOES contain all of the material that wasn't originally included. It been stated over and over
In addition to all of the content of the 1995 original, the new edition contains 25 pages of content developed over the last two decades, bringing the page count to 197 with 45 pages in full color.
The colour comics (save one) are in colour because they were originally drawn in colour.

Was the slipcase-idea discarded, or did you just not take any pictures of it?
The slipcase is wrapped up in the sad story of 1) why this book took so long to come out, and 2) why finally seeing it in print brought tears to our eyes. To make a long story short, we were told we could do some stuff that it turned out we couldn't do, and we weren't told we couldn't do it until the very end of production when all the pieces for the books had already been printed and were on the verge of assembly. Rather than delay the book another few months (!) and try to come up with an alternate plan for the slip case that probably wouldn't have been what we really wanted, we decided to punt on it. The book is still awesome without it.

This is correct. The anniversary edition of Surfin' the Highway (both the paperback and the hardcover) contain all the content from the 1995 original PLUS other stories and a few one-off drawings that were previously unpublished. Except for a few that are unfinished, all of the Sam & Max stories are in this book.
anyway...the hardcover looks really totally awesome..not to say marvelous. it's a lot thicker than the softcover. did you use heavier paper for it?
Yes, the paper is 100#, as opposed to the 60# used in the paperback. It's the same paper in the sketchbooks. Steve pushed hard for this, and I'm glad he did because it came out really nice. It made the production a little more difficult, though, because it meant that instead of using their bigger press, which had been used for the paperbacks and can print something like 80 pages at a time, the printer had to use a hand-fed press that only prints 16 pages at a time. I feel for the guy who was standing there feeding paper into the press. :D
btw..whose that strange guy in the blog, that looks like eminem?... :D
That's Nick. :D

Mh, wouldn't it be possible to produce the slip-case no matter what? When it's finished (in a few months), all buyers of the hardcover-version can get it optionally for shipping costs only. After all I assume the extra costs for producing the slipcase were taken into account when setting the price for the hardcover, right? And I would really like to get this, as I liked the idea a lot...
Everything you say is in fact possible. Probable? Not really :( The book was stretching the limits of, shall we say, comfortable affordability, with the 100 pound paper stock and custom slipcase, and I probably lost two years of my life due to the stress of getting what we have -- a nice looking hardcover collection of Sam & Max comics, with design and production quality I'm pleased with -- out the door and into your hands, that jumping back into the ring to make a slipcover that the manufacturer recommended against making with the materials we used, to give away for free, doesn't appeal to me at all. As much as I'd like a slipcase for the book, I'd rather leap from a window than make it right now, to be honest.
If you wish to make your own slipcase, the fabric is "Verona" by LBS. :D
Emily
06/11/2008, 09:56 am
It wasn't a cost issue. The main problem was that we were told too late that the material we were using could not be used for a slip case. The covers and spines had already been printed and stamped, so we were pretty much left in a position of getting slip cases that could potentially look horrible (plus a production delay), or no slip cases at all.
We're all extremely happy with how the hardcover turned out (Steve included! he can't tear himself away! (http://files.telltalegames.com/blogs/surfinhardcover1.jpg)), and I think you guys will be pretty psyched with it, too.

Doesn't the puppet just take the lunch bags? You can buy packs of those at the store. MY problem is the full-sized grocery bags I need for the "space helmets" - NOBODY has unprinted ones. I've actually had to *make* my own bags with brown craft paper. I just don't want my helmets to say "Trader Joe's" on them...

No, slipcase is not the same as a dust jacket. I think Jake mentioned awhile back that the StH hardcover was never intended to have a dust jacket. A slipcase is a hard outer case, which the entire book slides into. example (http://www.academylooseleaf.com/photos/sample014.jpg)

Someone will get 79 eventually (but it probably won't be anyone who ordered through the store already). There were a few book plates that went missing while the printer was assembling them, so rather than hold up shipping the rest of them to the warehouse, the printer is sending us the blank books. Steve redid the missing book plates and we'll put those last ones in by hand. (So 79 will be extra special, because it'll have my fingerprints all over it!)
Also, Steve posted a nice close-up of the book plate and some info about the process of signing them up on his blog (http://spudvisionblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/sam-max.html), should you want to learn more about this bizarre process...

We deserve one good thing seeing as you get everything decent and I have to spend a fortune ordering everything from the US!

Yeah, how much is the DVD cased version in stores over there?
£2. With Day of the Tentacle bundled in.
Granted, that was in a charity shop, but I've seen it going for similar prices at a few different ones.

I got my book! :D It smells minty fresh. I lub it. <3
I'm just disappointed that the animated series has no subtitles at all, seeing as I'm half deaf. Oh well. *turns the volume to Max*

Received my hardcover today! It looks amazing, well done!
Although, I am slightly disappointed that numbers are being sent out seemingly randomly. Considering that I placed my order within hours of the preorder going live, I thought for sure I would have gotten a smaller number than 457.
Yeah,we had hoped that wouldn't be the case, but given that the people who ship things out of the warehouse can rarely get the size of the box right, it was probably too much to expect. :( Fortunately the books are cool!

I really don't see it an issue about the numbers. It's not like lower numbered books are better than higher numbered ones. Maybe people think they'll have a higher resell value, but I'm sure none of you are planning on doing that now...
Or ever, as is my case. That's what I get for being a pack rat. My stuff won't ever go on sale again until I'm dead and my next-of-kin needs some extra cash for their questionable misdeeds.

I dunno, I've always tried to get the lowest number possible on my numbered goods, though I've never sold any of them. I guess somewhere in the back of my mind it just feels even more valuable when you get a lower number. My order was very early on as well and I'm not the least bit disappointed in getting 374.
On a side note, is it just me or does Mr. Purcell have a sort of Judge Doom thing going in that old timey picture in the back? :D

I confess, some of us did buy two just to have one to sell. I feel bad now :p

..but in that case it will probably just be thrown out with the rest of your stuff, because it's "just a comicbook". that's the worst part about collecting.

what happened to the one-per-customer policy?

People always go to me when I get a new collectable 'think of how much you could sell that for n a few years' but 'm like why would I want to sell it!?!?!

I've ordered two as well... one for me, one for my brother (his birthday is in August, so here's hoping for a "fast" shipping... not that I expect it).
Regarding numbers, I feel it's better to have bigger number on it, so that you can say, you've got more of Steve Purcell's ink on it ;) I guess it should contain a lot of 8s, as it probably has the longest stroke of all numerals. So, 1888 for me please!

I wonder if he messed any up. After signing do many, I'm sure there is a slip up or two.
Personally I think it would be awesome if there was a coffee ring stain on the inside, lol.

It'll up the value ten fold!
..but in that case it will probably just be thrown out with the rest of your stuff, because it's "just a comicbook". that's the worst part about collecting. Not in my family. Hell, we own the original vynal record of Disney's Snow White soundtrack from the 1940s, as well as an EP vynal record titled The Best of The Doors. Both are still in playable condition despite the fact the record player broke down on us 14 years ago when we moved. :( Those machines really don't like travelling cross country after 50+ years of use.

despite? more probably "because"...not being played most likely saved those things.
...like with the htr hardcover. it's just for display and feeling good, 'cause you have one. the softcover is for reading.
