Just got my book along with the Effigy Mound. The Effigy Mound is a bit bent around the edges unfortunately, but meh. I ended up getting the number 911. If I ever forget what number to call during an emergency, I can always look at my copy of Surfin' the Highway. I'm sure this book will save my life at least once. ;)
Of course the alternative significance to this number would mean that this book is actually a bomb. I'll hold off on removing the shrink wrap for a bit just in case.

P.S.: Today, when I was driving by the Turner office in Atlanta, I happened to notice that they were playing an ad for Sam and Max (well, technically Gametap) on the electronic billboard that they have.

I got mine about five minutes ago after explaining to the nice Home Security Salesman that there's a "No soliciting" sign in our neighborhood and I was going to call the cops on him.

Got number 446. :D

Just opened it. What a nice new-book smell.
Just looking through the full-color artworks in the back. Very nice. My $50 was well spent. :)

Well I just got my copy of the book and I must say I'm a bit unhappy. The quality is not what I was hoping for. Its still in the plastic so I can't even comment on the interior but the printing on the spine it total rubbish. It's beyond crooked with the "S" in Sam touching the very front edge of the spine. Additionally, the "M" in Sam is only partially foiled with only the last part of the M getting any foil. I can accept this kind of quality on a 10-20 dollar item, but this should have been caught by QC when dealing with a limited edition 50 dollar book.

Now I have to decide if I want to send it back or not.

Here's a picture of the book:

My spine text is noticeably off-centered, but nothing to complain about. Your spine, on the other hand, looks horrible. I would certainly not be too happy with that one!

What do you other brits think? 3 weeks? that sound reasonable? I've had stuff from canada take 7 days but they seem to have a more speedy postal service, what's up with that? curse those canadians and their efficiency.

Hey man, crooked spine stuff just adds to the charm... or something. I have AD&D books where the inner papers are too big for the cover! it's really really funny. There's also one of the books that's renowned for spine explosions, I don't own it but apparently every copy seems to just spontantiously explode in a shower of paper when you try to read it.. hahahaah.. ahhh TSR, how we miss you and your shoddy print runs.

Our shipment arrived yesterday, including the ones that were supposed to have gone to the warehouse. We were supposed to get 1-100 and then starting with 101 they were supposed to go to the warehouse, but several in the 100 and 200 range came to us by mistake. That's why the earliest numbers we've seen in this thread have been in the 300s and 400s. (Also, I do think the fulfillment house is opening the boxes randomly - they're not labeled on the outside and I didn't really have faith that specific instructions about which numbers to give to whom would be followed, so I didn't bother.)

I have two test orders on the way that were definitely the FIRST orders placed since they were before we pushed the store live, so we'll see which numbers I end up with. :D

The printer looked at each book plate as they were being put in, so I think they would have told us if any were messed up. They did notice some repeats, which we tossed, and some missing ones, which Steve redid.

Slothboy, the spine should not look like that. Looks like you got a fluke defective one (hey, it happens!) Send an email to support@telltalegames.com and reference this thread (don't attach the pics, though - the support system won't take them) and we will arrange to get you a new one.

from several earlier discussions about this i would say that most shipments from telltale's warehouse to europe take indeed between one and three weeks, longer if your customs officer likes sam&max. they seems to be getting faster though.

Hello everyone. I was wondering how many of you U.S. STH buyers out there that got an email confirmation that your book shipped on Friday, and it has not yet arrived. I have had an unusual number of my purchases go missing in the mail. They just don't turn up. I think my mailman might be doing something with them. Losing them, bringing them to the wrong place over and over. I dunno. Anyway, i just wanted to take a sample of others experience so far. See if i am alone, or in varying degrees of company on this. So, if you are in the U.S., got an email on Friday saying that your book was shipped that day, and it has not yet arrived, then if you don't mind, drop a note on here. Thanks in advance to any and all posters.

You chose UPS shipping, so you should have gotten a tracking number in the confirmation email. According to UPS, it's out for delivery right now, so you should get it by tonight. UPS Ground varies by distance, so that's why it's taken a little longer than others (the packages ship from Minnesota).

Jonglum
06/18/2008, 02:22 pm
The email i received did mention a tracking number, but the space that it would presumably have occupied is blank. I just wanted to see if there were many of us out there with similar shipping time. In the last 4 months, i have had a comic, a book, an 80 dollar DVD set, and another book(this one was lost twice) never turn up. Now, its a given that buying from eBay/Half/etc... is not going to be as reliable as the fine folks at Telltale, but man! I really think my mail guy is confused about where stuff with my address on it goes. Thusly, I am glad to hear that it will be UPS delivering it. Aha!!! guess what i just heard pull up out front? Great timing. Alright, i'm off to take a looksee. I will post my number and any other significant comments later.

Of course it is! Now i feel like a complete dumba**. Anyway, the book arrived. I got number 459. The thing....oh the thing...it's glorious. The pages are so thick you could rip one out and brain someone with it. I am a sucker for aroma. I love the smells of allll the many kinds of books. The mustiness of old books, the new inky smell of the freshly printed. I love the smell of this book. A mixture of serious paper and aggressive ink. They have truly constructed something i feel zero buyers remorse for having dropped 50 bucks on. I love it. Thank you, everyone involved, for bringing us this magnificent celebratory tome. J

Got #534 in the mail today! Wonderful looking book, I should put it and the soft cover side by side. There was just one little urksome thing about it. On my copy some of the gold foil is scratched off on the S and M. =/ I dunno I guess it adds to the worn look of it. It's perfect otherwise. Oh and I love the three circle Telltale logo on the spine, classy.

It's also a lot smaller than I expected.

Funny thing, when I first saw one, the book was actually smaller than I expected, too. I think after so many months of working on it, I'd built it up to be this behemoth of a thing in my mind. The good news is, when we put it in the store we had to estimate the weight, and really had no idea what it would weigh, and in the end we were about right. So everyone has been charged correctly for shipping. :D

The main reason for the shrink wrap was so that when the books were packed into cartons, they wouldn't rub up against each other and potentially damage the foil on the cover. It hadn't occurred to me that they should be shrinkwrapped, but the printer brought it up when we got to the foil-stamping stage, and I think they were right.

Yeah, to me the 20th is almost the end of the month. Heh...

Amazon have just emailed me to tell me that despite their estimate from two previous emails that D&D would not ship till July, it should also arrive Friday.. YAY! I have so much stuff arriving on Friday, I should stay in and refuse to go anywhere till it does show up hehehe.
I wanna play with my little toy Edward (how sad is that?) and read the new PHB and lament!

So now I have to change my estimate, STH shall arrive sometime before my birthday on the 5th.. yeah... that's what I hope anyway.

Emily> does that mean that later orders are more likely to get lower numbers? bummer. I still want 2500 though hahaha.

Mmm shrink wrap.. but then I can't see the pretty insides and the signature! The shrink wrap shall not defy me!

You know, I don't think any of our crazy valuable books are still in their protective stuff... They have their own bookshelf though, where they sit lording it over the cheep paperbacks and gloating.. that is.. if books could gloat.

Sooo looking forward to my books *jumps up and down*

Only for a little while. After the 100s and 200s get fulfilled, people will start receiving higher numbers again. We wanted to ensure that people who preordered got the earlier numbers in the range, so we are holding back the books at the top of the range until all preorders are fulfilled.

From what I read in here, people got books numbered between 3XX and 9XX. This sucks. Nearly fifty dollars, four months of waiting and I'll end up with 537 for all I know. On top of that, the shipping address [confirmed in the email] does not specify a country, but my phone number instead. A guy from Finland noticed a similar problem.

Does the address in the email correspond to what's on the package itself? If so, I hope the book somehow gets here. I guess all I can do is wait. It's been a week since it shipped so if it doesn't turn up during the next seven days I'll worry then.

Why don't you write into support@telltalegames.com with your concerns. That way you know they'll see them.

Also, the specific number on the book means absolutely nothing to me. I don't want to see these numbers turned into a pissing contest. I don't think if you get a lower number, somehow the book is more special. That's just my two cents.

Why don't you write into support@telltalegames.com with your concerns. That way you know they'll see them.

I just thought it would be kind of cool to whine a bit in public. Also, people who have similar problems [with no country specified in the shipping address] will know they're not the only ones. Besides, I'll mail the support if the book doesn't reach me. There's still time.

Also, the specific number on the book means absolutely nothing to me.

I have no intention of selling the book, I have ordered one copy only and I I would like a cool number. Someone in here got the 911, right? Now that's just too damn cool. Freelance Police and 911? That's just awsome. If I get a number I'm pleased with, I will feel good about myself and I will know that was a well spent sixty dollars [including shipping] and it was worth the wait.

If I get a crappy number, well, I will still be happy I finally got the book and I didn't have to pay $100+ for a used one on eBay, but it won't be the same kind of joy. If I get 777, I'll be pleased. Any nice and even number is fine too I guess.

It's just me and I like to bitch alot, but I did get the hardcover for sixty dollars and by preordering it I was hoping to get a number between 1 and 200, not 853 or 628.

Just to have something unique and Sam & Max related, you know? I don't live in the US so I can't get my copies of the games signed, I don't want to sell my book on eBay, I just want it for myself. I enjoy the games, the animated series and I love the comics. A nice number is just this cherry on top of the cake.

I don't really know what number in line my order had, but I sure would like to get a number that isn't higher than my place in line. "Oh, so you preordered to get a higher number? Ooooh.... We kind of missed that". ;)

you sure do...:D
...no, seriously, i can understand that you would like a special number. everybody does. that's why i usually don't buy numbered items unless there is also an improvement compared to the unnumbered version. my general rule: if you buy numbered stuff everybody will have cool numbers except you. also, there are probably a lot of nice numbers after 300...okay 911 is already taken.
also, i think it was asked in advance several times on the forums, if the order number will be related to the number in the book and the answer was that telltale would like to do it that way, but it most likely won't be possible.
i rather have a "meaningless" number in my book than having to pay 5$ more and get lower, but probably just as meaningless one, because i preordered.

See this post (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=68702&postcount=454).

Several cartons of books that were supposed to go to the warehouse came to Telltale by mistake. Right now they're on a truck back to the warehouse. When they arrive there, the rest of the orders will ship.

Ah thank you. I knew you said it may be about a week so I was wondering if I had missed my e-mail.

This book is awesome! Thick and Nasty!
I love the art gallery. It's beautiful! I also noticed that alot of the old fake ads and games are mixed in with the comics instead of being put together all at the end. I guess this is the way they were in their original comic book form. I'm a little underwelmed on the colourized version of "Fair Wind to Java" but other than that I really love everything. I can't wait to sit down and read through the whole thing.

Looking at the cover for the unfinished comic about Max getting shot makes me wonder why Steve never finished it for this collection. It's the "Freelance Police (game)" of the comic world in some ways.

He probably has a good reason. Time, money, loss of interest, applying to Pixar so he doesn't end up homeless on the street selling cheap knock-off versions of character drawings like all the street artists I always end up seeing somehow whenever I go to Florida. You know, something like that.

Yay, my hardcover arrived today! The confirmation email was full of lies; shipping was supposed to take "at least 10-14 business days, and sometimes up to a few weeks", but by my calculations it arrived in only 8 business days. Quite impressive since I live in Finland.

The book itself looks great, though a bit smaller than I imagined. I was also expecting to get a slightly lower number, but 550 is pretty good. In my opinion, 40 euros was a small price to pay for such a fine piece of literature.

And now to get stuck in!

It took less time than we said it would? A travesty! Put the book up on a high shelf and don't take it down again for at least 6 days. :D

Also, the rogue books arrived at the warehouse yesterday, so the rest of the orders should be shipping! (We are sending a couple more cartons over today to cover the most recent orders, so a few of you who just bought in the past day or two may still be backordered.)

no, that can't be the reason. it's only 50$...what do you think that second kidney is for? also, you can always get a bit of money from some russian break-your-kneecaps-guy...he is probably going to want it back someday, but you surely don't need to fear anything if you have a "surfin the highway" hardcover..
..furthermore, i've seen collectors pay a lot more for far less. no, i came to the conclusion - just about now - that sam&max fans are a lot more polite than other fans and are hesitant to order it, because they want others to have a chance as well.

Hi folks. Got some possible bad news for other UK S&M fans I'm afraid.

I missed a package from the postman today which I can only assume to be the Holy Grail we've all been waiting for. The card he left behind says I'm going to be tonked on Customs charges a freakin' great £16.07. Bit disappointed as I've bought loads of books from the US before and not been hit with a charge like this, and I'm sure I read in these forums somewhere that there shouldn't be any Customs charges (but maybe I'm wrong, it is nearing the end of the week and my brain needs a rest).

Not great news I know but thought I better just warn you other Brits to keep a bit of cash handy in case the Surfin' The Highway Fairy pays you a visit. With any luck you'll be more fortunate than me.

I'll cry if that happens to me cos I couldn't really afford the book at the moment and that happened to me recently with a tee shirt I bought. ...that may also be true, but there are regulations for this type of greedyness. if you get overcharged you should be able to set it right somehow. if it seems the customs charges are to high, you should ask your postal dude or customs officer about this...before paying the charges. then you should somehow get the chance to prove the true value of your package.
of course i don't know how high import tax and customs charges are in the uk..so £16 may be a correct amount.

Well the UK is a member of the EU, so they shouldn't be paying any more on customs than any other EU countries.

I actually read up on customs charges before ordering because I was afraid of possible extra charges. I can't remember all the details, but I do remember that the hardcover's value was low enough so that no customs charges or taxes would be charged.

I got hit with a customs charge for a little over £14 for my book and other items, bear in mind that £8 of that is their 'handling fee'
I'd not be bothered at all paying just the £6 customs, but that fee really is too much to charge for what they do, which amounts to slapping a sticker on the box and get you to pick up the package. I had this problem when I got the season 1 set and a bunch of other goodies last summer, and i'm sure it'll happen to me again with things I buy from the store in the future,

Emily

The handling charge is pretty annoying. :( We tried to get UK customs added in at checkout to get rid of the handling charge, but since we're based in the US and that's where the merchandise is coming from, we're legally not allowed to.

WHAT!? a customs fee!? NOOOO! I failed to account for such a thing and with three books shipping.. ouch.. this is gonna hurt.
I remember I had to pay a customs fee for several of my planescape books because some ebay members wont do the whole marking it as a gift thing (bah I say, BAH. We wouldn't have to lie if customs charges weren't so stupidly high) and it was sort of painful.

Damnit, i'd better get my books and not have to pay lots MORE money, i'll be pissed... and trust me, noone wants a pissed hormonal Sam and Max fan on their ass. lol.

According to my man you can appeal against the charge and claim it back. Check HM revenue customs website and see if there's anything about it there. In the meantime, i'm gonna go check what i'm likely to be charged

It claims books should be free.. so is the warehouse labeling things as "game" again? if so, Telltale, get on their asses and tell them to STOP.

They are at least free of customs... but you've got to pay the import turnover tax (basically the tax you would pay when buying it normally in your own country). In Germany that tax is 7% on books... so since I've bought two hardcovers, one paperback and an "Effigy Mound", that's a total of about 103,00 EUR, meaning around 7,20 EUR of tax for me to pay. I don't know though, if the fee is added to that, when there's no customs to be payed.

Been there, done that. I have done everything within my power to get this problem fixed, but they keep doing it. I have no idea why it's so difficult for those guys to label the forms correctly.

That being said, if anyone gets dinged by customs because your customs form said "software" instead of "book", please email us at support@telltalegames.com and we'll get the issue resolved.

The deal with customs is: They should charge you for every purchase made outside of Europe. They not always do. Sometimes you can get lucky and get away with it, since they can't be bothered with every single package.

The rule is: They charge you by what you paid for the merchandise. If the value / price is NOT specified, you won't be charged. You could skip the custom fees alltogether if those who sent the package wouldn't price tag it. Dadly, they do.

Telltale, if you really have to put the price on the package, write it by hand and make it unreadable, ok? ;] For us, europeans. I paid $23 in fees for Sufrin' the Highway.

i received this fine piece of printery today and must say it's quite marvelous.
shipping took two weeks, that's okay, i'd say. i was a bit disappointed with the packaging...nothing got damaged, but it easily could have. the (quite heavy) book was inside a way bigger box and had just some crumpled paper on top of it..it was slipping around in the box like there's no tomorrow. but nothing happened, so i guess it's fine with me.

Telltale, if you really have to put the price on the package, write it by hand and make it unreadable, ok? ;] For us, europeans. I paid $23 in fees for Sufrin' the Highway.
they did that last year when i ordered the season one dvd. all customs declaration sticker were handwritten and kind of hard to read...and from what i remember back then, a lot of shipments got opened by customs, 'cause they didn't know if and what to charge, and thus the packaged got delayed. on the other hand the value on my recent package it also handwritten and only a strange symbol...could be a 52, but i could also be...a strange dwarven rune or something.

p.s.: i wasn't charged anything..luckily. btw, i read that the amount you are allowed to import "for free" will be raised to 150€ at the end of this year. at least in germany, but someone told me that this might be the same for the whole european union. let's hope so..

Mine was 7.83 vat and an 8 quid "handling fee" which pisses me off. I don't mind paying VAT but HOW is them putting a box on a shelf and leaving it there worth 8 quid?

Oddly, I also noticed the convoluted route the book came via. It's got a sticker from somewhere in the US and then the bit that got me, it went through Germany!? What on earth? I thought that was a little odd, i've never seen a package come by such an arbatrary route heh.

The books are wonderful! the paper back is cool but good god the hard back is gorgeous! the paper! OH GOD the paper. It's so thick and fantastic feeling.

As mentioned here (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=70519&postcount=598) - if you are hit with customs charges, please verify with the customs officials why you are being charged. If it's because VAT is required to import books into your country, or on all packages above a certain value, etc., then there's really nothing we can do about it. But if it's because the customs form was filled out incorrectly, we can rectify that for you. In that case, please send an email to support@telltalegames.com and explain the situation. (Hold onto the customs paperwork you received, as we may need to see a picture of it.)

This hardbound edition is more enticing than the pressing waft of an expired box of Glazed McGuffins on a warm summer day!
I was so compelled to feel the thrill of its ownership that I stuck up a supermarket and and used my ill gotten gains to order my copy a few days ago, along with a couple of posters and an Elvis decanter with a hole in the neck.
Now all I have to do lay and wait for the postman to bring it to me!
Hope it comes soon,I've been sitting awake in the DeSoto for 4 days now!

There's a tough balance to strike between making something affordable and consumable, and making something special and unique. We erred on the side of special and unique, given that we're already producing an extremely affordable (and awesome) paperback version.

I think you guys made the right choice...I got my L/E signed hardback and its beautiful!
its always cool to have something special and unique...like that two headed stuffed alligator I bought from that nice witch doctor in florida!

Also there's a new highway surfing print (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/snm-prints-surfing) available. :)

I love that print! I bought it and the street scene one, though I must admit I was disappointed to see the DeSoto was butchered and turned into a lead sled with a chopped roof and pinstriping...Sam would never have allowed that desecration to his DeSoto.

While I understand the motive (somewhat) behind making the car a convertible for the games so you can see Sam & Max...I really wish you would stay true to the comics which are the sole reason for Sam & Max's fan base...as well as the reason the game exists.

I hope Steve Purcell will make the DeSoto a Hardtop again and make some more great posters and shirts.
Some Sam & Max decals for my car would be great too!

Actually, it was Steve's idea to redesign the Desoto. He did a rough sketch of the new design and they used it. He said it was his favorite thing about the new games.

I'm shocked he would have done that,I really love the original stock appearance of the DeSoto in the comics and tv show.
I have a real 1960 Adventurer 2 door hardtop and that car is a work of art as it is from the factory,it has very elegant flowing clean lines that convey motion even when standing still.Chrysler called it "the forward look"
In my opinion lowering it and chopping the top and adding pipes and pinstripes destroys the impact of that cars design.
Steve Purcell is a brilliant artist, but the new DeSoto in my opinion looks cheesy. I dont like the rat-rod look with the JcWhitney chrome pipes down the side and the obligatory pin striping..its too cliched...God forbid if Sam starts wearing baggy pants & Max gets tattoos and a nose ring next! (ooh...the horror!)
I have been a fan since the original comic on Fishwrap came out..I have all the books put out..(except the effigy mound)...I hope Steve Purcell doesnt continue to update (redesign) Sam & Max.

Steve..if you're out there...PLEASE "restore" the DeSoto!

HaHa!
Well.... it is a cartoon after all, so thankfully NO real DeSotos were harmed in the making.
But the old DeSoto kicked butt.
But I'll play along...Sam has the original parked somewhere in the garage and just bought this customized one to drive in the games! LoL

not quite...somewhere in the games they talk about it, that the current desoto is a new one and the other one is gone for good...but, you're right. it doesn't really matter, what happened, since it all just fictional anyway.

Dude, it's just a freaking car.. my goodness.

Isn't the new one based on a different model anyway?

Calm down! nobodys threatening to go on a rampage with a rusty garden weasel here!

This forum is for Sam & Max fans to express their opinions..all I said is that I think the new DeSoto is cheesy looking and I prefer the original in the comics.
Thats all.

You dont have to give a damn about it if your attitude is that "its just a car"

Its all just fictional anyway.

I suppose there are folks out there who might actually like the "new" Get Smart over the original as well...(shudder)..R.I.P. Don Adams)..but there are many others who were fans of the original series that dont like to see things arbitrarily changed.

NBC found that out when they made that new Knight Rider tv movie and they changed Kitt from a Trans am into a Mustang...Knight Rider fans were livid.

Its always a bad sign when original characters are revamped needlessly.
yes,the DeSoto is just a car (and a fictional cartoon one at that) but it figures prominently in their adventures and is an integral part of the story a lot of times and I flat out like the original best...it looked like a vintage cop car..not a lowrider...end of story.....thats my personal opinion.

And no the new car is still a 1960 DeSoto...its just heavily customized now!

With a muscle car engine, flaming paint job, roll bar with police siren lights, and a grill that is similar in design to those found on big rigs on I-40.

Oh, and a hula doll on the dash! :D

Thing is, I can see them giving their car a muscle engine just because then it goes faster, louder and can run over more motorcyclists lol. Though being so low you'd have a much bumpier ride, here's hoping they upped the suspension as well.. mwhahahaha.
Ahem

We can't forget the hula doll! it's essential!

While I don't like the new Get Smart movie over the original series(Don Adams is the best). The movie was not meant to replace the series, it was an homage to it. Don't you much prefer it that the franchise is left with a well done film like that and not....well....Andy Dick?

I do agree with you on Kitt though.

Also something for non-US customers to be aware of is that you may be charged import taxes when the package arrives in your country.

I love it too! It's actually been available for a while as a time life complete collection for $200, but I'm glad they're finally releasing the individual dvds that I can actually afford :).
