View Full Version : Sam & Max Surfin the Highway - Now Shipping!

Hey gang,
Starting today we're finally taking orders for the all-new reprinted Surfin the Highway! You can get a bit more information on the store page (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax-highway).
There will be a limited-edition, signed hardcover version (as suspected by basically everyone), but we haven't got many details this very second, other than "it will be extremely awesome." I'll try and fill you guys in in the near future.
We just got a couple sample copies of the paperback delivered to the office a few minutes ago, and we will be posting pictures in this thread and on the store page in just a bit. (Note for now: The paperback version came out excellent! The cover has some embossing and spot-varnished elements and they came off the press looking beautiful. I'm damn proud of how it came out... and am now leaving my computer to go post some pictures!)
Also, if you're going to WonderCon (http://www.comic-con.org/wc/), be sure to come by our booth and check out the book! Steve Purcell will be there for part of the day Sunday to do signings!

$49.99 for the hardcover? *screams* That's quite a lot, no?
I'm also a bit annoyed at how it is limited edition (although that's to be expected), but I was going to order it along with all the season 2 stuff to save on shipping and (more importantly) customs... oh well.
(totally ordering this too!) (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/snm-prints-surfing)
There's a tough balance to strike between making something affordable and consumable, and making something special and unique. We erred on the side of special and unique, given that we're already producing an extremely affordable (and awesome) paperback version.

What'll sell more on eBay in the future? Signed, or unsigned? ;)
Don't worry, I'll end up getting the hardcover anyway.

Dude, you really think 49.99 is much? I've bought other Limited Edition books for well over $100...
Awesome price, and I'm gonna pre-order as soon as I get home.

As with everything Sam & Max related, I have just creamed myself and pre-ordered the most expensive most limited edition I can find.
Once the DVD is available, and if the books haven't shipped by then, will we be able to merge orders to save on shipping costs (to the UK)?
Clearly I will be ordering that and the most excellent pride-of-place mantlepiece hardware.

So silky....and smooth....and..and.... *Begins to drool*
Erk.
If I ordered both the paper back and the hard cover at the same time, will I be waiting until the hard cover is released to get both? I suppose it is not a huge deal, I've been waiting years to get Surfin', a couple months won't kill me.
Emily
02/06/2008, 12:07 pm
Yep, as stated on the store page, any merchandise in an order with the hardcover will be held until the hardcover is available. Sorry. :(
(But I agree, after waiting all these years, what's another month or two? It's going to be worth it!)
Also, I forgot to mention this in the original post, but Emily has posted an excellent "making of"-type blog ... in the blog! (http://www.telltalegames.com/community/blogs/id-296) Check it out!

So is there a planned date for the hardcover release or, and I hate to quote 3DRealms and jinx us all, is "When it's done"?

Once the DVD is available, and if the books haven't shipped by then, will we be able to merge orders to save on shipping costs (to the UK)?
Unfortunately not, but we expect the hardcover to be available before the DVD, anyway.
Also something for non-US customers to be aware of is that you may be charged import taxes when the package arrives in your country. (For some reason I don't entirely understand, we can charge VAT on downloadable goods but not physical goods.) Usually this is not a problem because most of the stuff in our store has a lower value than the value at which customs charges start being applied, but if you're planning to buy a bunch of stuff and especially if you're getting the hardcover, please look into your country's import laws first so you won't have an unexpected surprise.

If there were, we would have said so. :p The interior pages were already printed and we are working on the covers now, but there are logistically a lot of things that need to happen before they'll be done, and we don't want to announce a date we're not sure of. (As an aside - there's a whole other story about the hardcover that I didn't even get into in that blog... maybe another time. ;))

Drat. If I'm reading the dutch import tax laws (http://www.douane.nl/particulier/internetaankopen/en/internetaankopen-03.html#P24_2278) correctly, I'd have to keep the package value below €22 to avoid import tax. That rules out any combined shipping.
(When) do you expect it to hit bookstores? I'm considering waiting to get it at my friendly local book importer.

When i got my sketchbook it was labeled as software, will that be the case for the surfing the highway books too?
Because apperently there is no tax on importing books to Denmark

It'll be going to some comic stores fairly soon, but as far as I know, only North American stores (for now, anyway).
If there's a store you like to import from, tell them to look for it in the Diamond Comics catalog.

Just ordered a hardback, among other things. Tried to use Paypal, but for some reason it wanted me to renew the information on my card because it had expired (next year. Paypal must live in some sort of timewarp)
So, instead, wired the money. Which was a whole other level of confusing (since banks make money from your money, they seem to try and make it as hard as possible for you to send that money elsewhere.)
Still, sorted. Now I wait impatiently.

Just curious, but what will the hardcover end up being like? Will it just be like the paperback with a hard cover and the normal cover art wrapped around (as a removable sleeve type thing)?
My love for all things Sam and Max will probably end up forcing me to buy the hardcover in the end.

The details are still up in the air. It will be similar to the paperback, but not something as simple as a dust jacket of the paperback art (I don't think anyone really actually likes dust jackets... they're kind of annoying, and cheezy when you get down to it!). We're working it out. When we have all the details nailed down I'll post a mockup and specs in this thread for you guys. It'll be sweet, though.

Yes it will! In fact, if you take a closer look at the Surfin the Highway store page, once you've selected a copy of the book, the price of the Season Two set drops to the $26 upgrade price immediately, so you can take advantage of the deal right there if you want. Alternatively, you can upgrade at any time.

Ugh...I can't decide if I want the hardcover or paperback. :\
Why choose?
I went *nerdgasm* and got both :D
...and probably gave your credit card a stroke or something.
at least that's what happened to me. i saw the news and went to the store instantly. since both versions of the book are probably pretty awesome, i ckecked them both. then i looked through the "stuff you might also want to buy"-section with the feeling i should be save from further temptation, 'cause i believed everything of interest already to be in my possession. damn, i was wrong...new print. i could, however, keep myself from buying the signed one.
now all i have to worry about is import tax...and finding a new, better paid job before my credit card is charged. okay, i might also need to get another frame for the print...one to match the one of the street print...i will end up buying two new frames. anyway, i'm quite happy now. the free 201 is a nice idea, i can use is to get someone else addicted to s&m...
the only thing that bothers me is, that there is no edition of the book signed by jake..
I love that old-timey pic of Steve and the alligators. :D
I wonder how recently that was taken. His kids must think he's the best dad ever. :D
@wisp - I did the economical thing and ordered the limited edition one first. Once the Season 2 DVD, soundtracks, and other goodies come out, I'll pick up the paperback. I doubt TTG would take it out by May.

*shakes head*i tried that with my last orders, but it somehow never turned out right. so now i order the items as they are listed.
btw, i am really excited how the hardcover will look. the ultimate thrill would be to have it bound in some kind of fake leather, like the stuff printed on the softcover, and then have the title embossed in gold letters. ohh..and the picture from the original cover art should be embedded into the leather in some kind of glass medallion. ahh, forget it..real leather, printed on hand made paper using baby squid ink..
*shakes head again*sorry..

Hi.
Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere (but after a little bit of research, I couldn't find anything), but a 25% discount on the season two purchase when purchased in conjunction with the book is mentioned in the press release.
I purchased the complete season two a while back (just about when it first became available).
I don't suppose there is a way for me to get the discount retroactively if I buy the book now, is there?
Thank you!

The "25% discount" is actually that when you purchase Surfin the Highway you are also given a free gift copy of Ice Station Santa, which you can give to yourself or to a friend who hasn't played Sam & Max. Once you have an episode of Season Two, purchased or given to you as a gift, or however else you can get a single episode from Telltale, you can use it to "upgrade" to the full Season Two for just $26, which is 25% off the regular price.
The deal isn't retroactive, unfortunately, but if you buy the book, you will still of course get that second complimentary copy of Ice Station Santa which you can give to a friend in lieu of spending nine bucks on some lesser gift they surely wouldn't appreciate as much! :)

Will the Paperback be reprinted, if it is sold out? At the moment i really would like to save on shipping costs and wait until the season 2 DvD is available, but if it is possible, that even the Paperback won't be available anymore at that time, I would order it now.
The goal is to keep the paperback printed and in stock until I die, so hopefully I'll outlast Season Two's DVD.

Ok, cool. Also, what's the story behind that actual content of the book? Will all of the extra stuff that's on the paperback's cover flaps be in the hardcover in some form? I know there's not much of this stuff, but I'm trying my hardest to convince myself that the hardcover is worth it, and I don't want to be missing anything that's in the paperback. :P (I have a feeling I'll end up spending $100 in the store by the end of next month with the Animated Series on DVD, and the fact that I plan on finally buying the Effigy Mound. I'm from Norway, the one lucky country that is charged VAT on physical goods.:p Last time I ordered, there was the situation where I had to pay VAT again when I got it because the shipment wasn't marked as already taxed. Have you heard any news as to whether Digital River has made any changes to this system? :)
I have already ordered the new poster and the hardcover Surfin' the Highway, for $99.91 including VAT. Expensive, but I have been looking forward to reading it for years now. Wooohoo! :D

What would I ever do with my money without you guys? I probably would have spent it on something boring like clothing or food. I'll have to wait a little while longer since I combined everything into one order, but that's okay.
Thank you, Telltale.

I'm from Norway, the one lucky country that is charged VAT on physical goods.:p Last time I ordered, there was the situation where I had to pay VAT again when I got it because the shipment wasn't marked as already taxed. Have you heard any news as to whether Digital River has made any changes to this system? :)
They've told me this shouldn't happen again, but who knows. If it does happen to anyone, let us know about it, please.

I would hazard a guess that the amount would be "as many as preorders made plus a few more". It would certainly be rather annoying if people who order the HC now get told "Sorry, you missed out on our actual limited print run which we didn't tell you how many".
If preorders are large, I'd hope the number of copies ordered to be printed will be slightly larger...
[In other words, my suggestion is that if you want the hardcover, order it now. If you wait, you may miss out]

We will not take more preorders than we have books. But there's no guarantee how long the hardcover will stay in the store, because they are a limited run. So yeah, if you want it, buy it. And no complaining if you decide to wait and then miss out. :p

Ordered my copy! I wanted the hardcover but I'm a cheapskate :( Oh well, can't wait anyways :) I have read half of it already, I went to library once to check it out, and they sent it to my library from the orange county library. But unfortunately, due to my vocabularies lack of the word 'due date' or 'calendar' I didn't return it on time. And boy was the orange county library pissed that a rare book was missing in the middle of Utah. It cost me 5 bucks for every day I didn't return it, and ever since then I haven't gone to the library cause they don't like me :(

My old copy was actually stolen (accidentally) from my local library. I checked it out and then lost it, so I paid for the missing book (which was cover price plus a bit for a fee I think). Then, later, I found it again! Then it disappeared again, and I never found out what happened to it that time.

When I found out I had to pay 245$ for it I almost did feel like stealing it, but then again I'm really paranoid about the feds finding me for some mysterious reason *cough*Idunwantmyharddrivewithbackupsofover10,000d vdstobeconfusedwithpiratedmovies*cough*
and I have really big guilty conscious so I don't think I could ever really steal something. My friend points that out all the time when I spend large checks on imports for Japanese music that I could download online, and since they aren't published in the US it's not illegal to pirate.

I'm not a bad person...
I once took out a Bone book from the library, and being convinced I had already returned it (and telling them that) I ended up finding it a couple of months later under the passenger side seat of my car. Luckily, during this time the library was going through renovations and setting up a new computer system so they decided it must have gotten lost in the chaos. I could have kept it and they wouldn't have ever known, but (being the upstanding citizen I am) I returned it :P

Emily

UPS is a lot quicker and their tracking is more reliable. I'd go with them.
The only reason not to go with them would be if you're shipping to a PO box, because they don't do that.
How long does the economy shipping take?

Anyways, on the topic of Surfin' the highway..
I got it on Thursday and I've been ambling through it slowly, cause I've been scanning Steve's amazing attention to detail, looking for hidden jokes kinda like the little side panels in a mad magazine, and lo' and behold, I found the first ever reference to Bosco...
BOSCO. WAS. A. TICK! Look about 17 pages into Chapter 2 of 'On The Road,' where the Pirates are showing them all the attractions they have stolen. There is a tent that says Bosco The Singing Tick!
Maybe this is why Bosco is so crazy!? Maybe because he is not of our kind, he is afraid he will be caught and sent back to do circus work as a singing tick? Maybe Flint knows his secret and that's why Flint is following him? Maybe all his years in the circus biz was how he learned all the crazy accents [despite poor disguises]? Maybe his years as a tick explains how he met the bug?
I'm onto you Bosco....

How long does the economy shipping take?
It's first-class USPS, but it can sometimes be a little slow, because Digital River goes through a third-party shipping partner who doesn't always ship until a day or two after the shipping notification goes out. The warehouse is in Minnesota, so the closer you are to the middle of the country, the quicker you'll get it.
I ordered a paperback on 2/8 and it isn't here yet. Based on the tracking info I think I'll get it on Monday.

So uh, do we have any kind of time frame for when the hardcover will ship other than just "Spring 2008"? "Spring" is kind of a vague time period. Can we at least know if it'll be early or late Spring? Or are you guys really so clueless about when it'll ship that you just said Spring so you won't disappoint people? ;)
I need to know if I should continue to excite myself, or if I should try my hardest to push it to the back of my mind so I won't go insane from the wait.
Given that the book isn't in manufacturing yet, it's hard for us to tell you when it will ship. When the book hits the press (we still don't have a printing date nailed down), we will tell you.

You know this new version has *more* color than the original Surfin the Highway, not less, right? I think that some people weren't wholly excited by getting Fair Wind to Java in color, but I say they are fools! When most people are talking about bad Sam & Max colorizations, I think they're referring to the Epic Color Collection from waaay back in the day, which has old 80s style comic coloring, which I don't think fits Sam & Max at all. Sam, to my eyes, is this weird sort of poop color; it's awkward.

for anyone waffling on this purchase, i would like to state that this is 100% worth it. back in 1996 i somehow came across the original version at barnes & noble and bought it (their only copy!). if i'd have known it would fetch a hundred bucks in the future, i would have kept it in better condition. regardless, i've probably read surfin' the highway at least 200 times, and i keep finding new stuff to laugh at every single time. i don't know how steve does it, but almost every panel contains at least 3 or 4 gags. i think he's amazing, speaking as a cartoonist...this collection has singlehandedly shaped my warped sense of humor since i was a high school freshman. mack salmon to lil' stonehenge, it's all there in its cheap american consumerism plasticine glory.
plus, you get added bonus references in the telltale games (well, i can only speak for the "Lobsta Fahts cereal" gag & "fizzball" in "Abe Lincoln Must Die," since that's the only one i've played until t-minus 30 seconds).
buy this, you will not regret it.
you were hired by jake to post this, right?:D

I want to buy the special edition so badly but I just can't justify. Now yes I am a huge Sam and Max fan but well it's pretty embarrasing really.
When I first got into Sam and Max (through the 1st season) I immediately went hunting for more. I bought Hit the Road (among other LA games) from Ebay and I ended up looking for Surfin the Highway. Much to my annoyance it was OOP so my only option is Ebay. I managed to find a copy on Ebay but the bid war for it brought the price to well over 100 dollars. (I believe 140 with shipping might have been less my memory is fuzzy on it.)
At the time it was reasonable to me. I didn't expect it to be reprinted so I went for it. I still say it's worth it since it's the original release (and Sam and Max is great) but being able to get a signed, hard cover version for around 100 dollars less hurts.

Any news on when the hardback version will be shipped? Sorry for the directness, but I figure I'd ask.

Yep, for now it's still the vague "Spring 2008". When we know something more concrete than that, we'll say so. :)

First off... promise that the vague "Spring 2008" won't turn into a Team Fortress 2 release and take an additional 9 years?
Second off... could we get e-mails when ship dates are confirmed? That would be awesome.

Spring starts today, March 20.
and when does it usually start?

Spring nearly always starts on/around March 20. Groundhog Day is a meaningless tradition, its results do not effect the start of Spring.
...just as i expected. thanks. anyway, this means, that as long as the spring 2008 release date stands, in the worst case the hardcover should be available in three months.
Hey! It's spring! Gimme gimme gimme!!

Is the hardcover going to have the glossy effect like the paperback, and with the protective sleeve? Haha, I'm torn between buying the Paperback/dvd bundle, or waiting to get the dvd later and ordering the hardcover version. A hardcover/dvd bundle would be nice, but can see why it wouldn't be possible, as the HC will probably be limited copies.
Also, is the autograph, going to be on the cover, or inside somewhere? Sorry for all the questions:p

Right now the autographs are sadly still living inside Steve Purcell's various pens, and, I guess, his hand. Or something.

Winter: November, December, January.
Spring: February, March, April.
Summer: May, June, July.
Autumn: August, September, October.
At least that's how it is here and it always starts on the 1st of each month.

Again, of topic but why does your Spring start 20 March?
Spring (and Fall as well) begins when the sun passes directly over the equator, which happened to occur on March 20th this year.
Somewhat on topic: I finally gave my friend her copy of "Surfin' the Highway" on her birthday last Monday. She loved it! :D
The hardcover art posted earlier looks really nice :).

Completely related to everything, I think what happened was originally Spring was meant to start on 20/21 with the dealio solstice, and then there were arguments over when spring really started, so the met office or whatever said, screw it let's split it into months to shut everyone up, and started Spring on the 1st and split it into 3 month blocks. :P So it all goes down to what you really believe when Spring starts. It's not gonna make Surfin' the Highway ship any faster though unfortunately

The above is correct. Actually in the Finnish language, June = summer moon, December = christmas moon (used to be winter moon back in the day).
If there is such a thing as an official first day of spring, I don't understand why it's March 20th tho ... why not March 1st? Is it really an official day?
Mister Flibble
03/22/2008, 06:27 pm
What was I talking about a solstice?
I was thinking of Vernal Equinox, which I think is when the sun is directly over the equator, which I think was the starting point of spring, that's why it was a stupidly accurate date, but as I said they split it into months to make it easier.

I'm sure it's:
Spring - September, October, November
Summer - December, January, February
Autumn - March, April, May
Winter - June, July, August
Although recent weather pattern seem to give us a four month summer starting mid November and a reasonably short winter.

I'm pretty sure English weather is like
Spring: Some random day in December
Winter: The morning after that
Summer: About 10 minutes after previous winter
Autumn: Every alternate Tuesday
Or something crazy

Hows it going with the ship date lately anyways. Been wanting to order the DVD for some time now, but didn't want to order the dvd only to have the book (HC) be released like 2 weeks later. Figured I may as well save money on shipping if I can:) If you still don't know though, i'll prob just buy the dvd now and put the HC on a seperate order.

or if you don't really have the money, but don't care, you could do it like myself and order both editions. that way you get one to read right away - well, if you get the package - and one just to be awesome..

I don't have ANY money, so I had to compromise and order the DVD as a "You Know You Love Me" present, which I generally persuade my mother to get every other month, and have Surfin' the Highway hardcover as a birthday present. Which is May 6th, so I'm not going to have Surfin' for ages, so I'm half hoping it takes forever to actually ship out, although I'm hoping for everyone else it's sooner than that.
On the other hand my grandmother just gave me money so I could order the paperback now...

Ooh, May 6th for the Hardcover? There's a gamble I wouldn't want to take without seeing the Vegas odds first.

I'm hoping it comes soon and then my mum'll give it to me the book immediately out of pity and then get me something else for my birthday.
Not that it wouldn't be a worthwhile birthday present in itself!

I ordered a copy of
"• Sam & Max Surfin' the Highway (Limited Edition Hardcover)"
February 16, 2008.
and i still don't have any news, not even a shipment confirmation for my order.
since it's more than one month since i purchassed i'm starting to be a little afraid. Is there a way to know if my order was shiped ?
The hardcover edition isn't completely done yet, so it won't have shipped yet. They still have a Spring 2008 shipping date on it. When it's done and ready to ship, they'll let you know.
Although I think I got a confirmation for my order at least. You can email support@telltalegames.com so they can confirm the order for you.

Oh ok, I though it was finished. I had a confirmation for the order. I was just afraid it had been shiped and lost by the post office or something like that. Thanks a lot for the answer Mel.
The hardcover stuff is very very close now, finally. I should have more news in detail in the coming days.
