View Full Version : Telltale expands, promising "two unannounced series"

Just in from Adventure Gamers (http://www.adventuregamers.com/newsitem.php?id=1618):
At an early GDC gathering on Monday evening, Telltale Games revealed that prominent industry veterans Mike Stemmle, Justin Chin, and Brett Tosti have now joined the rapidly-expanding company. In fact, the latest round of hirings has virtually doubled the size in the California-based studio in the past year. The extra staffing is needed, too, as Telltale also revealed that it is gearing up for "two unnannounced series" already in development.

It's great to see Telltale grows... Maybe it means the financial situation is great and a company can live by producing adventure games ?

Good stuff. While I'm one of the more critical people posting on the S&M board, this is awesome news and proves that I should keep investing on your products even if I don't agree with all the choices. :)

Stemmle I know, but who are the other two guys mentioned in the AG quote - Chin and Tosti? It's fantastic that you're expanding, I can't wait to see the wonders that lie ahead.

You know, now that we have kind of used to new Sam & Max games being released regularly and the initial excitement has kind of worn off, I think I'm actually starting to think that I'd like to explore a whole new story more than the remakes. Sam & Max was something that really had to be done, but now I'm ready for new waters!
There was no cool biker comic franchise that Full Throttle was based on and it turned out to be more than awesome. Why couldn't Telltale do the same, especially now that there's even more great talent among them?

I trust you guys, let's stun the world with something new and incredible, alright? :)

Stemmle I know, but who are the other two guys mentioned in the AG quote - Chin and Tosti?

Both are former LucasArts employees. Justin Chin is probably best known for the Jedi Knight games. He later left LucasArts and founded Infinite Machine which put out a console game called New Legends and was planning to make that Xbox Sam & Max action/adventure before the company went bankrupt. Brett Tosti has a pretty extensive (http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,1142/) background as a LucasArts producer.

I have my fingers crossed that at least one of the new franchises is an original IP. Now that they have the budget and man power to do so, Telltale should put their designers to work on some new and pine scented ideas. Popular existing IP's such as Bone and Sam & Max paved the way for original IP's. Don't get me wrong, though. I hope that Bone and Sam & Max continue. I'll also admit that Monkey Island would be nice, too, but I'm not holding my breath.

Before speculation starts running rampant, I'll go on record saying that both of the unannounced series are based on existing licenses. We really like working with licensed properties for various reasons (the built-in audience and brand recognition that comes with them being some), and I think we'll continue to do licensed games for the foreseeable future.

Let's add 1+1 together. Jim Ward stepped down from lucasarts, Telltale hires three ex-Lucasarts heavy hitters, Telltale is going to announce two new titles that are based on existing franchises. Neither of the new titles are going to be Monkey Island.

Full Throttle

and

DoTT

Though honestly, I doubt it'll be anything like Full Throttle or DoTT or any other of the old classics - they don't really have the built-in audience and all that. Both of the games are probably going to be Some-Very-Well-Known-Franchises (that have not yet been made as an adventure game, a la CSI).

Seein how telltale games made a CSI games, I wouldn't be suprised if one of the ips they got is Lost. True, L&O and Lost are two different types of show, but the two televisions are quite popular and Lost does seem apporiate as an adventure game. If not lost, then maybe Law and Order SVU.

That was actually something I was wondering about for some time.
Some old Sierra licenses are good licenses, but most of those can put the player in a position in which the controlled character can die (permanently, but with a quick "try again" function) or feature deaths of main or secondary characters (Take for example Phantasmagoria)
Would TT make such kind of games, or is the imperative to follow LA's edict of making deaths taboo too strong?

BTW, Quoting S&M 203's tag line, I would love to see more "edgy and subversive" games too.

True. Fourtantely, Sierra did away with the deaths in LSL ever since the PC version of Love for Sail. Since then, there are no deaths in LSL. However, I think that is the only lsl game that doesn't have deaths,

An episodic season based on The Simpsons would be awesome. First, I think The Simpsons would make great adventure games (they've been really unlucky with all the action games based on the series, which just don't work that well). Second, lots of Simpsons fans would buy them, even if they're not point'n'click veterans. That means more money to TTG!

Hmmm, new licenses... the most logical conclusion is that they're probably cult comics BUT, if we want to have our little "what we'd love to see done" discussion I second the Tex Murphy comment, i'd also love to see the two sequels to Loom but that aint ever gonna happen *sad*. The fan made one just isn't the same.

Let me see, Lost is already being made by some other company as is the L&O series so they're out. To be honest I don't really see the point in any more games in that style, CSI is sort of about all you need for that crime solving genre (though I did like the questioning function in the last L&O game heheh).

WHOO WII! I'm eagerly anticipating more games for the wii. So far i've been rather dissapointed with the selection of games (mostly sport and shooting games ew) so i'm eagerly awaiting the chance to buy the new telltale CSI game, Alone in the dark/park (ahahah) and this other telltale wii game.. oooo mystery game.

Coming into this late, very late. I have to just say that I am very happy to hear that things have been going so well for you guys. (I heard about this when it happened, just now bothering to write something.. hey, I'm in a chatty mood)

I honestly had never heard about you guys (and ladies!) until the news that Sam & Max was coming under your wing. And I was overjoyed to hear that you were working with Purcell on the project. I have to say that I was a little itchy on how things would turn out at first, but not moments into the demo for the first game, and I was buying the first season. Telltale knocked Sam & Max out of the park, and improved that, and continue to do so with every episode. Season Two is fantastic, and I can really feel that you guys have hit your stride with the characters and setting, and the zany humor we all so love.

I anticipate these two unknown properties quite a bit, and I have confidence that Telltale will do a great job with them, even if they turn out to be something I am not entirely a fan of.

I think this is gushing fan post number five or so, so I will just end it quickly here. Keep up the great work guys, I love your interaction with the community, I love your eyes for detail and willingness to listen to what we have to say.

Forever yours,
Tony.

P.S., see what I did there. It's a love letter... sigh, I know, I am lame.

P.P.S., Wild speculation on my part as to one of the new properties. THE TICK! Spooooon! (P.S.S? I can never remember)

Yep..

Curious as to what Telltale Games' episodic adventure game series for WiiWare will be? You won't have to wait much longer to find out.

All will be unveiled at Nintendo's media summit in San Francisco next week, says Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors.

Woo! Flight of the Conchords episodic adventures!

Quick true tale about my last job:

A major challenge we faced was creating a way for players to maintain their bearings as they steered their starships across the vast empty expanses between planets. Eventually, it was all but decided that we would place blinking markers in space to establish "roads" in space.

These markers were known by the various Conchords fans on the team as...

(wait for it)

"Buoys in Space."

I'll say one thing about a possible FotC game: The dialog needs would be darned light.

http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/04/09/gyakuten-kenji-new-phoenix-wright-prequel-starring-edgeworth/

This is DEFINITELY the new game developed by Telltale games. The reasons for this surely being the telltale game are:

1) The quote of Dan Connors from earlier - Ace Attorney fans are great at figuring stuff out of course

2) Ace Attorney is a very funny franchise - which is exactly the second fact we know of Telltale's unannounced series

3) The game is perfect for episodic format - it is practically episodic already

4) According to the information about the new game, it will be a 3rd person point and click adventure - perfect for the Telltale Sam&Max's engine

There is of course one itty-bitty contradictions - it says it's developed for the DS, and all the screenshots are for the DS. But, of course it could be a mistake. Or maybe they are developing versions for both platforms!

When I say modern, I usually refer to the last decade of animation, mainly cos I'm heavily into the 50's-70's era of cartoons.

Oh.Well, Jhonny Bravo was, and still a funny show.Especially when I think Jhonny got Thor's hammer and went to, um... was Valhalla or Asgard or where ever, were the Norse gods were?

You experience, now that we have form of used to new Sam & Max games being issued on a regular basis and the initial fervors has kind of worn off, I think I am really starting to think that I have like to research a whole new story more than the refashions.

I'm guessing that it's going to be based around one of the following...

A) Chowder
B) The Simpsons
C) Team Rocket

Yeah, I know my guesses are totally out there, but who knows?

Must be an elaborate spam bot trying to use a statistical analysis to generate speech patterns similar enough to those of actual users. Too bad he's using his powers for spam rather than science, as this is one of the better implementations I've seen yet.
An interesting read, at any rate. What we're looking at is a glimpse of the words and sentence structures we use most typically around here.

In the e-mail I just recieved from telltale (announcing the new Sam&Max DVD), at the bottom, under the sub-title "Also Making News..."
There are two hyperlinks:

"Strong Bad" links to http://www.telltalegames.com/mail/45384104/strongbad

and "Mystery Town" which links to http://www.telltalegames.com/mail/45384104/mysterygame

A clue??

Looks more like a cruel, evil tease.

BUT.

I'm sure that while they distract us with their fancy new mystery game, they're doing the usual "growing company" thing. Oh sure, they're a nice small company at first. And then suddenly they're not talking to fans anymore, they only make Star Wars games, and they lay off entire teams that work on those Star Wars games!

That link may go somewhere in the future :)

(and no, the game isn't the long rumored 'Legends of Mysterygame, Arctic Explorer')

It's true, all of it!

Anyway, I'm going to get back to making a webpage about a short cartoon man with a wrestling mask for a face who is famous for answering emails.

Hey now, you've already abandoned Bone. Who knows what else you'll abandon as you roll ahead in your quest for riches and power!

....

I still haven't gotten around to buying the Bone games, though, so I guess I shouldn't care too much. =)

Heh. Chowder would be a nice game. As long as you get the visuals right. The art style is pretty much the best thing about Chowder. I also love the art style of the Misadventures of Flapjack. Are they done by the same studio? It seems like there are a lot of similarities.

When is the new reveal going to be made? Is there a specific Telltale event sometime during the convention?

They should make a game based off something from Weebl's Stuff.I'd play a point-and-click of Magical Trevor, Prawn To Be Wild, etc...
