View Full Version : That PC Version

Is it me or has the PC version been kinda marginalised? At least 3 people I've spoken to (plus many more I've seen online) have said things like 'Yeah, but I don't have a Wii' and after all, the only evidence of the PC version is an afterthought at the end of the press release and a small visual gag during one of the adverts. Some websites aren't even reporting the PC version.
I'm sure Nintendo would like it if people bought a Wii under the mistaken impression that it was the only way to play this game, but I'm getting a little bored of posting messages saying 'It's a PC game, too!' Especially as (I imagine) there are more PC owners in the core audience than Wii owners.
Also - and I'm sure this isn't the case - it kinda gives the impression that the PC version is just a quick and dirty afterthought port without much thought going into it. Perhaps the balance will be restored a bit once we have a date for the PC version?

We will have many more details about the PC version coming soon. We wanted to start with the WiiWare announcement, so we're holding the PC details back for its own announcement. (And they'll come with plenty of time for people to make an informed decision about which version to buy.)
Our decisions about how to reveal information has NOTHING to do with the game's development! The game is being developed for PC and Wii simultaneously with equal amounts of effort going into both. The PC version will be great, don't worry.

A week ago, none of us knew about the game's existence at all, let alone the PC version. Give it time.

Oh, I'm certainly not complaining. I just noticed that there's a bit of confusion around the release, given the number of people lamenting that they don't have a Wii, and the PC version sometimes not being reported.
As I said, I was sure that it had nothing to do with the development - but I can see how someone might get that impression.

PC is awesome.
Don't get us wrong, having it on PC is a definite awesome.
But for the ones who have hated the Wii: Playing Strong Bad on the Wii with minimal and ridiculously fun wiggle and waggle, makes a lot of sense, and transcends all hatrednessessesseses.
And for the ones who never really cared for the Wii, or have been looking for one: The idea of kicking the Cheat with motion control or easy point-and-click action sounds amusing and intriguing, and this game is the "Push" they need to start searching for the Wii (or even more-so).
And of course, for the poor college man/woman (sucks not having money even for food), or sheltered child: They probably don't have a lot of space, or enough "power" in their comps, as they probably destroyed their space with MMOs and RTSs up the wazoo, or they're still using a computer that's as old as Strong Bad's computers.
And for hardcore fans: Knowing the Chap-Bros. love Nintendo, is enough incentive to get it for the Wii instead of the PC. (Or for the people who have enough cash: Both)
We'll get the PC version too. But the Wii version just sounds intriguing at this point. First, give us time to process all this awesomeness that has appeared before our worldly senses... then we'll think rationally.

Will they come out at the same time? Both versions sound good and I'm going to give them time, but I will feel a bit screwed over my support for Sam and Max if the Wii gets SB first.

Because of the (assumed) nature of the core part of the game, (point&click to hear&listen,) watching teasers and trailers is kind of like playing the game itself.

I'm a total Wii freak, but I'm not sure which version will be more awesome. Using the Wii-mote to navigate through the world of (Strong) Bad sounds awesome, but I'm wondering if the PC version will have certain advantages. It may not make sense, but I'm just curious.

It's because I'm at college and my Wii is at home (because otherwise I might be wasting all my time on that... as opposed to wasting all my time with other things like I do now...) so I only have the PC when I'm away from home. Thus, when I'm not at home I'll have to get the PC versions.

I've been a PC Gamer girl for 10 years. I was "concidering" Sam & Max, but making a Strongbad games seals that deal.
Wasn't the a Sam & Max cartoon in the late 80s or early 90s?
Molokov

Sam and Max was a comic in the late 80's, a game in the early 90's and a cartoon in the late 90's.
Go check out the store for the reprint of "Surfin The Highway" (the comics), and the DVD set (just released!) of the cartoon. You'll have to search to find the LucasArts game "Sam and Max Hit the Road" because it's generally only found in the 'bargain bin' nowadays.

Well, I was speaking for the newer Macs with the Intel chipsets.
Well my 2 cents is I let some people know about it and they were more primed about the sam and max stuff coming out/getting ported to the Wii. So that was good business sense Telltale.
As for Stong Bad and great Awesome I will play it on either platform. I am wondering if there will be a full season discount for the Wii version as well since I always wait then buy. That would probably break any tie for me.

Seriously man. Pretend I was at the office so I could post a new photo of that jump to conclusions mat. You're making things up here.
This is probably the closest I'll come to buying a Wii - the games looks like it's going to be fun. The only problem is that close is no hit. I already have a DS, but for the current generation of consoles, I want my GTA, GT4 and Final Fantasy and probably a bunch of other stuff I forget.
It's PS3 and PC all the way for me, and although I do appreciate that Strong Bad should be a Nintendo game, I'm not buying one. Any chance of a DS game? I think it's got more chance of success. Maybe sell it with Trogdor stickers :)
Right now we're doing the game for WiiWare and PC. A DS game would definitely be awesome (who doesn't love the DS?!), but its not what we're working on right now.

On rereading this, it does seem a bit passive-agressive, so I apologize. I was also thinking along the lines of a PC release date announcement coming soon before or at the same time as the actual Wii release. I guess I was just frustrating myself.
Speaking of which, are you planning to announce any specifics concerning the PC release (release time relative to Wii version, differing features, etc.) any time soon? It can't be too long now, at any rate, since you said previously that you'll announce any differing functions (if not more) long enough before release time for people to make an informed decision.

I'm curious. Is SBCG4AP being made on the PC and ported to the Wii or is it being made for the Wii and being ported to the PC. Or are they both being made separately but identical in content?
Harald B
05/31/2008, 11:31 am
They're making the content in their in-house engine, the Telltale Tool. (You can see a bit of their editor in this video (http://www.gamecyte.com/2008/05/21/the-telltale-art-developing-strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people/1497), at 2:33.) The engine was originally for PC but was ported to Wii a while back. So for SBCG4AP, there's not really a making+porting or making+making, just the making.

Both are being built concurrently with the same toolset. Neither one is a "port" -- the programmers can make a PC build or a Wii build at their leisure, off of the same core codebase.
to get back to topic: how much more leisurely will the pc build be handled?

Yeah.
So hopefully PC and WiiWare Strong Bad next week!
There might be another one.

They've released one for the past bunch of weeks.
And if anybody wants to check for themselves what gets released, go to press.nintendo.com, and usually by noon EST they'll have the weekly updates.

Well, just because that's the way they have been doing it doesn't mean they will do that every week. The Virtual Console games have been alternating between one and two, so there's still hope. But that could just be wishful thinking because I'm really looking forward to this game.
Or Nintendo could decide that nobody wants that paint game anyway and people would much rather have SBCG4AP next week. But I doubt it.

According to this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WiiWare_games), Pirates: The Key of Dreams is scheduled for July 2008. This means that if Nintendo keeps posting only one WiiWare game a week, and P:TKoD is indeed released in July, then there's no way the SBCG4AP will debut in July.
I know that Emily recently said here (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=72763&postcount=9) that she doesn't want us to see Nintendo as faceless corporate bullies, but it seems likely that SBCG4AP keeps getting bumped because Nintendo sees Telltale as having next-to-no seniority (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=seniority).

IT JUST AIN'T RIGHT!!!!! sorry if I'm not making this easier, it's just, does the world need another pirates video game? plus, around 1/4 of my summer revolved around playing this game. (as strange as it sounds) a guy can only live on Sam and Max for so long

You know, you could also go the other way and say "If SBCG4AP is indeed released in July, then there's no way P:TKoD will debut in July." There's no reason to believe one way over the other without further news.
And remember, I believe the original delay was Telltale's call to add some finishing touches to the game, so it's not like this has even been Nintendo's delay from the get-go. As far as I remember, Telltale never told us when exactly they finalized the game and submitted it, so we don't even know how much of the delay is because of Nintendo.
As for seniority, look at the people who made the pirate game and the paint game. One doesn't even have a Wiki page, and one hasn't done much else. It seems like Telltale has more seniority than most WiiWare designers.

As the NOA President has stated in a recent interview (although it should be already figured out) they announce WiiWare games' release dates the week they are to be released. There aren't any WiiWare titles that have an exact release prior to the week of debut, so it's not just this game. Although inconvenient, that's the way it is.

Sure. This is the interview. (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37267.html) To quote him, Reggie said, "We announce [WiiWare] on a weekly basis."
hmm, weekly basis usually means "once a week", but in this case it might simply be "not on a weekend"...

This has turned into a pretty monster thread, hasn't it? Sort of drifted off-topic, though...
When I posted this I didn't have a Wii. Now I do, and I'll have to think about which version to get.
if i had a wii, i would probably get the wii-version, since it is suppossed to have some kind of "email"-feature. also, playing adventure games on the wii sounds pretty relaxing. however, it might me possible that there will be sweet disc release for the pc-version...
You're thinking of 'weekday basis', Thesaurus-Lacker, Non-Master of the English Language.
such insolence...what are you implying here? i am not thinking at all...;)
...no, seriously: i wasn't thinking of 'weekday basis', but of week as an adjective, thus being made an adverb through the suffix -ly. btw, this silly joke works just as bad in german as it does in english.

i'm not worried about wii storage, because i can just delete whatever i'm not using and redownload it later. or move it to an SD card, even.
i think people are whining too much about storage issues. unless you want to have a bunch of virtual console games sitting there on the menu not being played, the only reason they need to have more space is for DLC. or they don't realize you only have to pay for something once and you can download it as many times as you want.

According to this article (http://wii.ign.com/articles/894/894061p1.html?RSSwhen2008-07-26_130000&RSSid=894061), the Wii version wont have carry-over content (like the decals on Sam & Max), but it will let you send pictures to friends.

In an interview (can anyone find this for me?) they said that they were looking at dual platform releases. Despite Gametap being on the PC, they consider it a separate platform. It was said that for Sam and Max, the two launch platforms were PC and Gametap... and for SBCG4AP it will be PC and Wii. I'm still not sure if I should get the Wii version or PC version. I'd love to play it on the Wii more than the PC personally. But the mere thought that there is even the smallest possibility of a bonus dvd makes me hesitant.
i would totally like it, if you could buy it on the wii or pc and then get the second version later for less..like a crossgrade or whatever this is called. i mean, i don't have a wii at the moment, so i'll be getting the pc-version...if there will be a few more non-partygames in the future, i might also get a wii and then playing sbcg4ap on it might be tempting, but buying it two times for the full price might be a bit to much for me. don't get me wrong, telltale totally deserves to get my money twice or even more times, but, you know, i still have to pay for the house to put the wii in...

This is why I don't play TTG games on the PC. Multiple games on multiple computers all experience the same 'graphics' problem... (I attached two pictures of the H*R game showing the problem still hasn't been addressed...)
Am I missing an OS file or something? This happens on all of the Sam & Max games, the Bone games, and now the H*S games.
Looks like WiiWare is my only option.

There's definitely a problem with dual monitors, and I didn't have this problem with any of the Sam & Max games. It doesn't stop the mouse from going off the edge of the screen into the other monitor, which is really annoying. And yes, I'm sure it's not a problem with drivers or anything like that.
If someone from Telltale reads this, I'd really appreciate it if you could fix this problem for the rest of the episodes; it's really disappointing.

Have you tried running the DirectX Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en)? There's lots of versions of DirectX 9.0c that Microsoft doesn't bother updating though Windows Update. :/

You should probably try running the installer anyway. I was sure I had all the updates, but apparently they had a 5 MB file to install on my PC and I haven't had any glitches since.

Funny story: Microsoft doesn't include the DirectX 9 files after Aug 2006. Hilarious! :/
The web installer will look and add missing files for 8, 9, and 10. So even if you have Vista (and epically if you have Vista), you'll still need to run the installer.
Today I'm working on the installer to always give the choice to run the DirectX installer. You can always opt out of it, but at least everyone gets up to date. Before anyone asks, we do plan to include the full offline version on our season DVD and doesn't download DirectX files from the Internet. If you have already run the DirectX installer, this doesn't apply to you anyways.
