BEHOLD AND WEEP (with joy)!

PS: For all of you Telltale forum visitors, how about a little less plushy talk and a little more statue and action figure discussion. ;)

Was that a hint at possible upcoming Sam & Max action figures from Symbiote? Share and discuss among friends!

Ohh yes, That'll do nicely
Very nicely
I'll take one of those :D

Also I love that they have kept us up to date with images of the various stages
Thanks Symbiote!

I want one of those!!

As for the action figures, I think I remember Symbiote saying they were working on an unannounced Sam and Max project beside the Statue, somewhere, so maybe. ;)

I want Sam & Max action figures! Actually, as I've gotten older, I've noticed that the distinction between statues and action figures has blurred... so I'll take whichever has the most effective price-to-coolness ratio.

au contraire...of course some statues are sold as action figures and vice versa, but the main criteria for an action figure is articulation, or else it won't do much "action". if it won't move it's a statue or better statuette...since it's small enough to carry around.

jup, those the the genuine sam&max rats as seen in the comics quite often.

Well my point is that since I'm just going to put it on a shelf and look at it, articulation has become a non-factor for me.

action figures have the slight advantage of being posable, more or less, but usually the joints look quite ugly, so i would prefer a nicely done statuette.

Zeek
04/15/2008, 09:30 am
^Unless you get the Todd MacFarlin models, then there's no real point to having joints at all. Seriously, some of those action figures are better off in the poses you see them MITB.

Same with many Japanese "Action Figures". Sure they usually come with tons of swappable body parts and lots and lots of accessories, but most of the time have very vew articulation points and/or lose balance in just about every pose except the one it was in in box.

I do not like it... :S

Making a real 3d statue from a cartoonish character is always hard.
In this case I think the material is too smooth. It should not, they are a dog and a rabbit.
The mouse in the gun works in the paper but in the statue not so much.
The head of Max seems strange, the problem is probably the mouth that is too little marked.

It is not definitive anyway... Lets see...

Zeek
04/17/2008, 05:37 am
Keep in mind that this is a blank base. Much like in ceramics, the final product all depends on what is painted on top of it.

Right now, there isn't suppose to be that much texture in any of the furry critters because that is how they are drawn in the comics and cartoon series. Very rarely do you see either with their fur roughed up. I don't expect the paint job to do that either.

I think Sam's hat brim could be a bit less straight, and his muzzle seems a bit long, or something. Those are very minor gripes, though. The piece is very nicely done, and I would be happy to own it as-is right now (even without the paint).

you're just jealous...no, seriously, what muzzle?

His snout, then... it seems too elongated to me. Although, it could just be due to the angle that the picture was taken. And again, this is just a minor nitpick, overall the sculpture is amazing.

Laserschwert
04/18/2008, 05:23 am
I thought so too about his snout, but on second inspection I think it's the shadow cast by the hat which fools you (and me, apparently).

The statue is based off of the comics more than the game.

I was fooled by that as well, though it does give it the bulbous appearance it has in the comic. Also I like the little crease on the edges of his smile, and that he's got a bit more weight to him than the Telltale Sam. Fortunately, Sam has looked very different over the years. I think TTG's Sam looks more like his early comic form, combined with Hit the Road-gone-3D. This sculpt is definitely inspired by Purcell's more modern renderings of the guy.

Formaldrahyde
04/18/2008, 05:03 pm
Primarily, I think the character's pupils were misunderstood. I also think that Max's face doesn't have the correct proportions, and that his eyes should be going inwards, should be thinner/smaller and his nose should be much smaller. And the brim on Sam's hat could be a little more shaped or else it'll look Amish, like it does right now. Other than that, its mostly perfect.

Also, what the hell happened to Sam's eyes? Maybe they're just hidden by the shadow of the hat, but... seriously, that's kind of creepy.

the details on the hat are less sharp nameley at the back and it looks like the indent in the hat is no more

Yeah the blog is annoying. It's called "Symbiote News" but it's mostly filled with random posts that no one comments on everyday. Unless you check it frequently you'll probably miss the real news since it gets pushed down the page.

I shouldn't bash it too much. After all, I found out about the movie Tekkonkinkreet from one of the posts. If they wanna do blogs on a variety of topics it's fine, but they should seperate the two.

They should make a Max action figure that shoots real bullets and a Sam action figure that eats real food! Then the world would be at peace. Exept for violence and world hunger. Peace is overrated anyways

In case you guys missed it, there was an update on the statue a couple of days ago as follows:

"Changes:

1. Added stripe in tie knot.
2. Metallic guns have been made more black and less metallic.
3. Changed grip color slightly.
4. Suit and hat are now same color.
5. Suit and hat are now more grey
6. Rats more grey brown with flesh colored extremities.
7. Tomatoes in hot dog are now red.
8. Base is now black.
9. Minor tweaking to Max’s eyes and nose.
10. Secret sauce added into polyresin mix. (Goes great on french fries!) "

They also seem to have a little surprise ready. You can check it out here:http://blogs.ign.com/symbiote_studios/2008/09/14/101461/

From the blog http://www.symbiotestudios.com/blog/

"We are happy to announce that we will start taking pre-orders for our extremely limited edition Sam and Max statue on September 29th for release in early December. This statue will have under 1,000 pieces made world wide and retail for only $75. The item is huge in scale with the top reaching over 12 inches and the base over 10 inches wide. The entire statue is very heavy in weight yet most shipping to locations in the United States will be around $10. Each statue is hand numbered, shows the limited edition mark and has the Sam and Max logo.

Due to the limited edition of this piece and the high demand for this item all pre-orders must be paid in full at the time of order. We do this to make sure that only serious collectors and fans have an opportunity to purchase this piece of art.

As an added bonus all those who order will receive $5 off our next Sam and Max item which we will be announcing shortly. The next Sam and Max item retails for under $25, so $5 is a major savings. We hope to have the new items approved for pre-order by September 29th.

Thanks for all your support and look for new images of the statue coming soon."

Go through the ordering process to find out, you can cancel after you've discovered it (if you like). It's probably $72US, that seems to be the standard international rate.

I wonder if their sculpturer used that expanding foam plastic I was looking at for a project I never completed. I'm told that if you don't seal it with resin, it will expand at 50% its original volume over night every night until sealed or until it becomes bloated with air.

I just ordered one. Somehow I missed that they were taking preorders, and was terrified that they'd be out of 'em. Whew!

I'd be tempted, even at $75 USD but international shipping will be a real bitch.

Mmm, tempted yes... but nooo international shipping will kill. I'm gonna look into it however because damn that's cool. The promo they had wasn't as awesome.

It would be about $210, actually. Glad I preordered before the drop, making it about $160, $180, something around there.
