What number Sam and Max: Surfin' the Highway (hardcover edition) did you get? I plan on taking all numbers posted and compiling a list of corresponding usernames. Obviously this isn't going to be complete since not everyone who bought a copy frequents the forums, but I thought this might be cool.
I'll try to update the list every day or two.

466 edit: ah already got mine from main thread. :D
2501 (actually unnumbered) went to Steve Purcell
2502 (also unnumbered) is floating around Telltale's office. I am going to try and con my way into claiming it, though.

After all the work you put into these books you have to con your way into getting one? lol
One of the unnumbered ones. I'll surely end up getting one of the regular ones :P

well, if steve got the unnumbered one...then you can have number one. that way everything would be like i predicted, which might end up to be quite nice.

I got 1009 and 1010, yeah I bought two, and I'm leaving 1009 in its wrapper safe in a box high on a shelf. If I had known, in my younger years, that the original printing wasn't going to last forever then I would have bought several of those, as it is mine is pretty hammered. But I love the construction of the hardcover, it's like a textbook without all the tedious learning and such.:D

But it does teach us. Just the important things, like how to disembody a criminal or how to pick out the least nutrious corn dog (so much so that it isn't classed as food anymore) to eat.

The UPS guy dropped off my package a short while ago. I wound up with number 906. I thought about flipping the included card upside down to fool my friends, but then I realized that it would read 906 either way. Overall, I'm happy with the hardcover. I was a bit worried after reading Slothboy's post in the other thread yesterday, but thankfully, those fears weren't realized.

#901 for me.
502. Mine was thrown over the fence that surrounds my little side yard. :p
The poor UPS guy didn't have much choice. Some people moved out of their apartment, filling the dumpster to overflowing. With no place to put my own garbage, it sat right by my front door, so the UPS guy didn't have a place to put the box. I should say that he didn't fling it, just dropped it over (with no bumps or bruises).

One time a UPS guy left a package nestled in the top of this huge bush (tree, really) next to our driveway. I didn't notice the package until a day or two later when I happened to come in the front door (I usually go thru the garage) and noticed a delivery confirmation note stuck to the door. Under "special instructions", the guy had written BUSH. I had no clue what that meant...
I eventually found it, but we needed a stepladder to get the damn box out of the tree. Really weird.
Also, I love that this thread exists. I want everyone with a forum account who bought a hardcover to post here and let us know what number they got. :D
That's funny! :D I guess they didn't want the packages to get ripped off by anyone.
I haven't taken the shrink wrap off yet either. I saw the number on the back on a card (or envelope maybe). Is the book plate inside of that?

Once my posty didn't even deliver my package, they didn't leave a card, nuttin' and just took it to the post office. It was only when I went to check at the post office if any had happened to it as I was moving 5 hours anyway when I found it was there and if I hadn't collected it, in a few days it would have been sent back. Lazy gits.
And I would have been mad cos it was my Batman, Robin, Joker and Harley Quinn snow globe (which I've been wanting for months!)
Sorry rant over. But the morale of the story is... posties SUCK.

The number thing on the pack is just a piece of paper. The book plate is glued to the first page of the book.

I had something delivered once where the guy left a message in my door saying "package bin" and I thought "wtf?!" and opened my wheelie bin and rustled around trying to find it. Then I noticed the wheelie bin had been slightly moved forward and the package was behind it against the wall. From the front of the driveway on you couldn't even notice the difference and thanks to the incorrect information left I had to sort through rubbish instead :(
ohh, the package bin....isn't that the thing that people put in front of their houses once a week?

After four months of waiting and paying $60 for the book + shipping and additional $23 they taxed me for an item purchased outside of Europe I finally got my book. Beeing one of those who preordered I thought I secured a high enough number for myself. No chance. Oy of 2500 books printed in total I got:
1225
Telltale: This sucks! $83, all this waiting and all I get is No. 1225. Nice. I bet people who just bought the damn thing got 2XX. I am disapointed. If I knew from the start that this is how it's going to be, I would have never preordered it. I'm sure eBay will soon offer books with various numbers to choose from at similar price.
I thought the point of preordering was not only to secure a copy but also to secure a higher number. This wole number thing is a total and complete mess. If it wasn't possible to send out the numbers that correspond to orders, the books shouldn't be numbered in the first place. I'll certainly feel screwed if a guy who buys this today gets the 100th book. Or 200th, or 300th, or 400th ... Since all I got for my money and waiting was 1225.
Emily

I thought the point of preordering was not only to secure a copy but also to secure a higher number.
I'm sorry you thought that and I'm sorry you're disappointed with the number. :(
The point of preordering was to secure a copy, period, as this is a limited run and we have no idea how quickly we'll sell through them. We knew that ensuring the numbers went out in the same order the preorders had been placed would be impossible, and we never promised it, but we did do our best to make sure that people who preordered would get their books from an earlier set in the series than people who didn't. (Notice no one's reported that they have a book in the high teens or 2000s yet? That's not a coincidence!)
The fact that Steve signed and numbered every single book makes them special. You have proof that your book is one of a 2,500 limited run that will never be reprinted! It also makes them more valuable, regardless of what the number is.
Morden
06/27/2008, 06:11 am
Yea well, as long as the book is selling ... I just feel cheated out of a higher number because of how poorly things were planned. It would be nice to have a list of orders and list of numbers so that people could actually see which number in line they had and what number they eventually got.
I know I wasn't the first one to order the book, but I sure wasn't the 1225th.

I know ... I know ... But then again I see people posting messages "I got mine TODAY! Number 234!". Mine had to travel all the way to Europe, and the number is fairly high. The order was shipped on the 14th so it must have been the first batch out, right? I guess mine just got picked from the wrong box. It is signed, it is special, but 2XX is still more special than 12XX. Heck... If I got the 1250 it would be perfectly fine. Nice and clean, right from the middle. But noooo ... I placed three test orders before the book was even added to the store, meaning mine were the first three orders placed, and I got two books in the 600s and one in the 900s, if that makes you feel any better. I promise you, it's random. ;)
Morden
06/27/2008, 06:35 am
I promise you, it's random. ;)
Oh well ... as long as you promise :) Ok ... Now that I complained a bit, I can finally start convincing myself it really is special. If I was ever to sell it on eBay [which is HIGHLY unlikely] I would add something like this in description:
"Before you buy, you should know that the number is random and yet still special. Emily from Telltale team told me that herself" *screenshot from the forums here*
Ok, I'm off to enjoy my expensive book now. No matter what number you get, the pages are still the same, and everybody knows that what really matters is on the inside, right?
P.S. - The overall quality is SUPERB. The book looks, feels and smells nice. I'm really pleased with the quality of both paper and print. If I could wish for something more I would wish for a dust cover.

Last time I checked, 1225 x 2 was 2450, not 2500. It's not the "exact middle book" now is it? I even mentioned before that if I got the 1250 book, I'd be pleased.

First off, I didn't get the #1 book and if I did, you wouldn't hear a word of complaint. Second, if you're "appauled" by all the bitching, you're out of luck. It's my book, I bought it, I ordered it ages ago, it was NOT cheap and I got a number I'm not pleased with. If this somehow bothers you, I could not care less.

I'm gonna go pick up my copy from the post office in a bit, I got slapped with a 16 quid fee which i'm not at all happy about. I'll be more than a little pissed if it's handling fees and customs, VAT pisses me off enough because it just seems so unfair we in the UK get such a massive 17.5% whopper in there (plus customs says that books are charged EITHER 0% or 17.5%.. wth? there's no rhyme or reason or explaination as to what will get stung)
The bitching about numbers, well... I'm not that fussed though I do have to admit, the shambles with the first couple of hundred is a bit of a joke. Not Telltales fault mind, it's the warehouse.
I would have liked to have gotten a lower number because I preordered but that's the way it goes I suppose, seems Telltale don't have much control over their warehouse and the staff who appear to be opening boxes at random and sending them out. Perhaps next time guys, it might be worth the time and effort to send things this important out yourselves like you did with the case files. That way you ensure they get processed the way you intended instead of the random and chaotic shambles.
That said, while people are getting books in the 1000 i'm yet to see any 2000. So it may be random but it seems to be only the boxes they can get to easily (i'm imagining the 2000's are at the bottom of a large stack hahaha)
i got number 1181...didn't i tell you people to get me number 1??
okay, actually....i didn't. :D i like it the way it is..

Oh, and on the topic of customs and tax charges, the packages are labeled "Software made in USA". I don't know if this applies to tax fees by customs aswell but generally the tax for books is lower than tax for software. Not to mention labeling a package containing a book with "Software" is incorrect. It's not software. It's a book!

I believe that mislabeling a customs decleration form can lead to higher penalties as well. Customs doesn't take kindly to customs forms being filled out wrong. I don't think they'd care much if it was labeled software instead of book as software levys more of a customs fee but should they open the package and discover the customs form is wrong? According to HM revenue customs they CAN if they deem that the reciever or sender is trying to pull a fast one, actually slap a massive fee on you for fraud.
It's worth knowing that. As I said, I doubt they'd do it for software instead of book.. it's more to stop people writing gift when it's not to avoid a fee... but still.. you never know.
Also, yes, games are charged at a different rate to books which seem to be done on a case by case basis.

That's a big problem indeed. Thankfully the package with my book wasn't caught by customs, but if it had I would've been wrongly taxed because although books are except from all taxes here in Brazil software gets charged with an outrageous 60% fee that's calculated by adding the full price of the product with the shipping fee. Worse, any complains filled about wrong taxes applied to imported products take an average of 15 months to resolve, during which the package stays rotting in a warehouse, and another 2 years to receive an reimbursement.
I lost count of how many times I ended up just bitting the bullet and paying the wrong amount just to avoid all that headache.

Yea, well ... That's something that won't get sorted in here. It's a Telltale Games forum, not Telltale Useless Warehouse forum, and I'm guessing it's the lovely people at the warehouse who label book pachages with "software" and send people ridiculously high numbers on their Surfin' the Highway.
I hope that Telltale people will understand that the wrong labeling costs us SERIOUS MONEY. If you send a book, label it as a book! I wouldn't give a damn about the label if it didn't make any difference, but this is money we're talking about.
If the warehouse is doing a poor job, convert ladies' bathroom at Telltale office to a warehouse and store your stuff there. The only girl on your staff is Emily and I'm sure she won't mind. Heh.

Are you trying to just be a loud jerk? Guess what... we're human beings too. We exist as real people outside of this forum.* We DO realize that it costs you serious money, and that knowledge stresses us out and makes us feel bad. Believe it or not, we're even working to solve these issues.
As Doug said, it's harder to solve than just flipping a switch, or "getting another warehouse." The amount of pipeline and infrastructure going on behind the scenes of an electronic transaction (especially through a business which sells a mix of custom manufactured hard goods, wholesale-bought existing merchandise, and electronic downloads) is staggeringly, surprisingly immense. If it were as easy as flipping a magic switch, please trust me that we would have flipped it a long time ago. Our web team has been hard at work for months on working out better solutions to the issues you and others are experiencing. Hopefully someday sooner rather than later, issues like this will be far less common. On that day we will probably dance around, and also, very likely, be a bit drunk.
For now, I'm really sorry that you hate everything. Thanks for sticking around through thick and thin, even still :).
As for "converting the ladies bathroom," well, that's fine. You can come in and work for free 40 hours a week packing up merchandise and shipping them off around the world (and also act as the crossing guard to the mens room, for whenever a lady wants to use a toilet). Anything that doesn't fit in the ladies room is going to have to be stocked on palettes in your apartment, as we simply haven't got the space in the office for such an operation. I'm sure you won't mind :D
* The fact that there are so many staff posts on weekends and evenings is due to dedication, not, as incorrectly rumored, to our web staff consisting wholly of faceless automatons who love slapping you with inappropriate customs charges. Easy mistake to make, I know, but yeah, we are real.

but for a small company (you still are pretty small aren't you) they are doing very well and have some of the best customer services, dedicated, helpful and friendly staff. they are consistently giving us brilliant products which not all can buy, one day i hope they can expand to have a European (their second biggest audience i believe) warehouse for merchandising etc, if this is at all possible.

I was just a bit dissapointed with the number I got. This, plus the additional $23 in customs fees affected my mood I guess. I've been a good Telltale customer so far. At least I think so. I got pretty everything with Sam & Max except for the t - shirts and posters. I will continue to buy your stuff and I hope you will get some of the warehouse related issues sorted out.

As far as storing things in my apartment, it's small but I wouldn't mind! Talk about perks of the trade. I'd know exactly what number of Surfin' the Highway I was getting! Then again I'm not sure if storing some of the things in the ladies room and the rest in an apartment in europe would be a good combination. This, plus getting to "work" would be a pain.
Anyway, I'm sorry for being such a pain in the ... you know where. I'll try to be good. I promise.
it's a miracle how sometimes issues that seem so simple just won't got away. the customs sticker's thing might have been solved last year, but i guess we all know how frustrating it can be adressing a certain issue and not getting the reaction you hoped for. happens all the time in our modern world. so, if telltale is onto the problem then it will be solved sooner or later. changing the warehouse could solve this issue, but also created several new one. that you should always keep in mind.
about your number: damn, 1225 is totally cool. okay, you could have gotten a lower number, but, hey, it's still nice.

well getting back on track my number is 853..which sucks considering I bought the hardcover like an hour after it went on sale.. Why couldn't I get lower? Other than that I'm very happy with the book, glad they did a hardcover, very happy with the better paper quality. This is def. the best version of surfing the highway that's been released.
As for Telltale's warehouse issues. I will try and avoid buying anything from Telltale that has to ship out to Australia. I don't blame the telltale employees, but from a business standpoint it's just not good enough, and the problems gone on for far too long(over a year) My paperback edition of STH arrived after 6 weeks and was damaged one of the many problems i've had with orders..In fact if it wasn't telltale, and they wern't selling sam & max stuff I'd prob stop buying stuff from the store all together

I preordered the hardcover pretty much as soon as the email was sent and still got 1035. Look at Emily's numbers though, they simply aren't being sent out as "first person to order gets one, so on and so forth" otherwise surely she'd have gotten 201, 202 and 203 but she didn't!
I believe the warehouse is just sending random numbers. OK you have a slightly increased chance of getting a lower number if you preordered but if you look at the sheet of orders recieved they are sort of all over the place. None in the 2000 yet though.. so maybe there's some logic to it.
don't really mind to be honest, i'm just happy to have such a pretty book with Steve's sig! YAY! and I have what looks suspiciously like eraser gunk behind the signed paper ahahahaha, telltale eraser gunk! what a bonus.
I have only had one item damaged and that was the art of S&M which suffered a little scuffing to one side. That was a while ago and my current three books arrived in pristine condition *shrug*
The only complaint I really have is the mislabeling of customs forms. My t-shirt last year was also labeled software.
Flog them warehouse staff! or send them for reprogramming.. I mean.. retraining.. yeah... <_< >_>
Aside from that, Telltale, you guys have been awesome. Your customer service is top notch.
Should I feel special or scared that I'm one of the few that doesn't mind having a relatively high number and is just happy that I actually have the book? I'm getting mixed signals from this thread about that, since everyone is going all hardcore comic-book collector/invester from my perspective.

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore comic book collector and I certainly didn't want a better number to increase the value of the book in case I want to sell it, because I don't and I never will.
When the hardcover version became avalable I ordered it as fast as I could because I wanted to have the book. The book with all of its content that I so much wanted to read. Finally. The number is a bonus and knowing I ordered it early I hoped for something in the 100 ~ 500 spectrum. That's all.
I still am really pleased with the book and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much in fact, that when I woke up in the middle of the night the other day, I sneaked out to the living room, carefully without waking the wife, and read it instead of going back to sleep. I tried not to chuckle too much.
I am happy I finally got it. I guess it's seeing others posting their numbers made me a bit jelous.

For instance, I like the number I received for my surfin the highway book since it is fun to say. Even if it was some other number, I know I will still like it just as much since it makes me special. LOL
I think I just like getting any number than caring about the order of the actual numbers.
you're probably right, but couldn't the guys and gals at the warehouse at least open the boxes in the right order? that way the number would at least roughly represent how desperate someone was to get the book..:D
As far as book numbers go, all I care about is that the books are so fancy they've GOT individual numbers. My copy is busy putting the rest of the bookshelf to shame. I have to keep reassuring the paperbacks that I won't judge them by their covers.

It wasn't at the bottom of the pile, at least not that we can know for sure. This has been explained again and again, but it was because of a mix up in how the boxes got sent to the warehouse. I get that you're being sarcastic, but this is getting really old really fast.

I keep on whining because every time someone posts their number, it's somehow even lower. Seeing all the people who just recieved their books get numbers from the 2XX range doesn't really make me feel good about myself.
This, plus the fact that people who had something to say about my complaining either got lower numbers or didn't actually buy the thing. For all I know, I could get a higher number if I bought the book TODAY. I know that lower numbers have been reserved for the preorders but only so many people preordered and Telltale is still selling everything, right?
I'm just curious when will people start getting higher numbers, that's all. And the fact is, I'm stuck with what I have.
I wonder if there is anyone out there who got an equally high number and wasn't pleased with it. I'm not one of those who'll say "The number doesn't matter to me ... I'm pleased with whatever I get ... It's all good". I preordered, spend a ton of cash on it, wanted a high number and didn't get it. I got the exact opposite in fact. Apparently this makes me a loud jerk.
P.S. - Telltale did decide to number the books individually. In doing so, they must have known that this will make people want "good numbers". If the books were just autographed with no number on them, there would be no problem. If you put a number on a LIMITED EDITION you know what you're getting yourself into, right? Or at least you should know. Most people in here act all grown up about it and don't really care about the numbers [Yea, right ... Good one, Mr #2XX and Mr #3XX], well I do.
I know that Jake, Emily and others from Telltale team didn't send me this book, but it was Telltale who planned this whole thing with numbers, warehouses and the rest. Where am I supposed to complain if not here?
they could have at least opened the boxes with the lower numbers first, not the other way round...anyway, it's no use crying over shipped books.
btw, morden, i hope you realise that your argument about how much you spent isn't really...valid. you didn't pay more, did you?

I got #637 and it took too fargin' long to get here.
So, to ocuppy me idle hands, I devised a plan to suicide bomb Telltale twice (three, if one of the attempts happens to fail). It's SO good, I actually was sad when the book arrived.
Then I brightened up at the idea that I could always save that plan for later, or maybe even secretly share it by means of this forum, so any other person could do it. I would just put a "Don't peek, Telltale" in the title and it'd be smooth going.
However, when I opened the book, all thoughts of revenge flew out of my head. I know Steve signed all books, but you could see there was something special in mine.
The way he so lovingly put that dot in whatever it was, you can tell he was thinking "This book is going to that Ima Silly Puss guy from Spain, or whatever, whom I never met and never will, but with whom I feel a certain special bond with, so I'll just take more time into fashioning this pre-printed signature on his book."
Thank you Steve, and thank you Telltale. I wept openly.
Cheers!

Well, yeah. Yeah it does.
Telltale's gone and republished a book that's been out of print for years. They've had new things added and had a limited edition hardcover copy made. And then they asked Steve Purcell to sign every copy of the hardcover version separately, adding the number which it was signed in in every one to make it more individual.
Telltale didn't need to do any of this. They could have published the book sans any signatures and numbers and charged the same price. They could have just not published the book at all.
Either option would've saved you posting "I got number 1225 on my book god this sucks geez telltale it's like you don't even care about your fans booooo".
You've got a book you would have been paying upwards of £100 for a year ago. Complete with the artist's signature. So what's the problem?

You've got a book you would have been paying upwards of £100 for a year ago. Complete with the artist's signature. So what's the problem?
I thought I did axplain what the problem was, but I'll explain it again, just for you. I am really happy with the book itself. The hardcover edition is a comic of the highest quality. I am happy that I can read all of these stories and I didn't have to pay £100 on eBay [only $83].
To someone reading this thread it would seem that absolutely NOBODY [besides me] cares about the damn numbers. And I know Telltale said they won't be able to send out books with numbers corresponding to the order. However, they did say that people who preordered will get higher numbers, right?
In other words they DID have some power over what numbers are being sent. Or am I getting this whole thing wrong? So how many people have preordered? What's the highest number that someone got when they preordered the book? Since I got the 1225th book there had to be at least 1225 preorders, right [or 1266, including Shanks' number]?
Since preordered copies will have higher numbers than regular purchases, at what number is the line drawn? When Telltale said the preorders will have higher numbers I thought it will be in the 001 - 600 area. I mean, how many have preordered the book? I'm really curious.
Ok, forget it. I just make myself look worse by posting more about this and it seems like everyone is enjoying their numbers. For me it's a bit too much to have some people get 2XX books and some 1XXX books. It's just too big of a gap and it's totally unfair to the people who coughed up the cash first.
Oops my bad. Still, haven't read it like. Or even seen the movie.
you should do that. now, run along, read all five books, watch the movie...the old bbc thing and the new one...come back and we'll call you a geek again...no, really, it's funny.;)
I thought I did axplain what the problem was, but I'll explain it again, just for you.(...)
The way it appears to me is, that Telltale did not excactly instruct their warehouse how to handle the numbers. Emily said something about this. So, they opened the boxes randomly. The first one contained numbers around 600-700. The next one was something over thousand, you and I probably got our books from that. Later orders seem to receive their copies from the box with 200+. What seems to annoy you is, that now a whole bunch of buyers, that probably ordered it later than you, get 200ish numbers. So it still is kind of random though. Unfortunate, but still somewhat fair, since which box you got your book from was in the hands of the warehouse. You should really try to get over it however. The more you complain about it, the more it bothers you.

Man, you got the number from the exact middle of the run and are complaining. So weird. I would have taken that one.
There are 2500 books officially. Unofficially there are two more, unsigned. I did say it once before since I got the "exact middle book" argument from someone else. But what the heck, let's do the math one more time.
What's 1225 times 2? It's 2450 ... Not 2500 or 2502. Like I said once before, I would have NOTHING against the #1250 [THE exact middle book] or even #1251 [the REAL exact middle book].
2500 divided by 2 = 1250
2502 divided by 2 = 1251
1225 times 2 = 2450
When the editions are numbered, the idea behind it is not to keep count but to make them special. Better the number, higher the value. If the numbers mean nothing to all of you guys, I'll be happy to swap my 1225 for a 1, 10, 100, 111, 200, 911, 666, 999, 777, 1000, 1111, 2222 or any other number concidered to be good. I'm sure none of you care about the numbers ... It's just silly old me who had high hopes when preordering and ended up with a completly random, high number with no significance whatsoever.
Badwolf: Nice choice of quotes you got there. I'm sorry if you have managed to miss the fact that numbers do increase the value. But I'm sure you're one of those who are equally happy whether they get the 100th limited edition or 1473rd. Good for you man. Wanna buy 1225th? It's special you know. It's kind of close to the exact middle one.
Seriously though, if I had another $83 to spend, I would order a hardcover today just to check what does your "preorders will get higher numbers" really mean.
P.S. - Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining because I didn't get a 1, 10 or a 100. It's just that getting 1225 by the privilage of preordeing is laugable by my standards. "Middle of the run" doesn't do it for me while others get 2XX just because someone didn't care to open the right box. 225 would be fine, 325 would be fine aswell ... 1225 is a joke. I can't see how you can say that those who preordered will get higher numbers and then ship out 12XX range to people who waited for months.
Haha you're right, I really don't know how count. I'm sorry for bringing that up again. I'd go jump off a bridge for you, but I'd probably get it wrong and land back on the sidewalk.
Anyway, the reason the books are numbered is so that you know that you have a one of a kind item, not a race to the bottom. You're right that there are a very small collection of specific numbers which are interesting or could have more value than others, but guess what, you were one person out of over a thousand who preordered the book. The books were apparently handed out by the warehouse nearly at random (with some preferences at certain points where you could tell they went through a few boxes in a row, before moving on to some other batch of numbers). If you're annoyed simply because you didn't beat the odds, that's hardly fair. If there was something I could do to improve your situation, I honestly would, but really there's not much I can do. You repeatedly bringing it up in this and other book threads, you leaving a snarky signature, etc etc, won't lower the number, and I don't think that your behavior is going to endear anyone enough to have them swap numbers with you.
You have one of only 2500 copies of that book that will ever be made. Again, I'm sorry you're disappointed that the number you got was lower than you wanted, but out of everyone in the world, you are one of 2500 people who will ever own it, and you have a hand numbered plate signed by Steve Purcell to guarantee that fact. That's a signed, numbered one-time printing.

Badwolf: Nice choice of quotes you got there. I'm sorry if you have managed to miss the fact that numbers do increase the value.
Which is funny because earlier in the thread, you said, and I quote
"If I was ever to sell it on eBay [which is HIGHLY unlikely]..."
Emphasis on the "HIGHLY unlikely".
So there we go, you're highly unlikely to sell it, you've already said you were happy with the feel and contents of the book, so again, what's the problem.
And I could compliment you on your equally fine choice of quotes. You managed to not even acknowledge the main point I made (that Telltale could just as easily not have done any of this and there wouldn't be any complaints from you).
But I'm sure you're one of those who are equally happy whether they get the 100th limited edition or 1473rd. Good for you man. Wanna buy 1225th?
You mean "one of those people who doesn't whine on internet forums over a number". You make it sound like that's a bad thing?

So there we go, you're highly unlikely to sell it, you've already said you were happy with the feel and contents of the book, so again, what's the problem.
I'm not even sure if I should bother explaining something you probably already know but won't or refuse acknowledge. People buy the collectables and limited editions mainly because of two things. They can profit by selling them later on or they can be really happy that they got something special. Right?
So even if I was never to sell my book, this doesn't stop me from wanting a better number for myself just so that I can feel good about it. If that's what rocks my boat, so be it.
So like I said, I feel it's a bit unfair for some to get the 2XX and 3XX range and some to get ridiculously high numbers. Keep in mind that there is still only one person who got a number higher than mine [and you don't hear him whining, I know].
But yea, tell me to shut up because I'm the only one who complained.
I don't know if Telltale can put together a total number of preorders but I would like to know what it was. I mean there has to be a range of numbers for those who preordered and then numbers for regular purchases.

In other words they DID have some power over what numbers are being sent. Or am I getting this whole thing wrong?
Yeah, you are.
You see, this is the problem that people are having here. It's not that you're upset you got a larger number, we get that, it's just that Telltale didn't have any power over the numbers.
Well, I suppose they could have withheld the book from release a little longer to make sure that all the boxes were at the warehouse and were being shipped off in the right order, but that's hardly a desirable solution.

I don't see what swapping books would accomplish.
The number in the book is surely completely irrelevant. They're not there so you can say "Hey, look! I got one of the first 200!", they're there so you can say "Hey, look! No other copy of this book in the world has the same number as mine! It's unique!"

it seems to be a big burden for tt to do esp for being trivial. l mean, tt has to ship all the books to their office so that they can spend several hours, if not weeks to organize in order so that they can bring it to sdcc and then cross their fingers to see if anyone comes to their booth with their unopened copy, askin for a change.

Mordon> actually, I DO understand what you're pissed about, as I mentioned earlier with a little less bile. It's a shame tt didn't have as much control and that the earliest preorders were, for want of a better word, cheated out of their lower numbers. It's a shame but that's the way things go. You have a unique number after all. Hell, I got 1035 which given I ordered the hour the email was sent, is a little high. That said, i'm happy that i have a signed copy of Surfing the highway, it makes me happy.
YES it's a shame that the lowest numbers were sent to tt instead of the warehouse, yes it's a shame the warehouse didn't appear to open box 201 to fill the early orders in the meantime (maybe they did? I dunno.. how many preorders were there? A lot i'm assuming... )
BUT all this bitching and moaning wont change things. The moral of the story? You want something done right, do it yourself. (like the case files, lovingly put together by tt's own blistered hands) but that's hardly practical for the office.
I get that you're annoyed that after preordering, and presumably being one of the first 500 or so to do so, that you didn't get one of the first 500 books as we all presumed would be the case. BUT, I don't recall ever being told that we would definitely recieve one of the lowest numbers, mearly that we'd have a better chance of getting the lower numbers than those who didn't preorder.
I'm sure the intention was to have the first 500 get the first 500 books but things didn't turn out that way. Oh well, life goes on. If it matters so so much to you, keep an eye out on Ebay and see if someone with a low number is selling theres for extortionate amounts.. OR, just rejoice in owning something beautiful and well made, signed by the artist and utterly unique.
Yeesh, this board has become hostile... i'm scared.

Hi everyone, first post! (Been lurking for a while though!)
I got my hardcover sent to a friend in New Jersey (though I live in Malaysia) and it arrived last week or so. I have to admit I was a little disappointed with the lack of packaging -- I ordered the paperback, hardcover and Season 1 together, and they all came in the same box with no padding whatsoever. Luckily everything seems to be in pretty good condition, save for a few dents on the paperback corners. But still, a bit of bubble wrap would be nice for next time. :)
My hardcover is #139. Gotta admit that I would've liked 1234, or 777, or 2222, but other than that no complaints!

Wow, I can't believe how much griping there is over the number of the book people received. (I do get the issue about having to pay extra for mislabeled contents and taxes)
Does it really matter what number book you have? Each number is unique - book #20 is no more rare than book #2500. In fact, the fact that they weren't sent out in order means that any argument over "having one of the first books" in instantly elminated.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I bought the book because I love Sam & Max and thought it would be awesome to have a numbered edition signed by Steve Purcell himself. In fact, I was more disappointed with the fact that the signature was on a separate piece of paper that was affixed to the book rather than being part of the book itself. (Don't get me wrong, I also understand how insane it would have been to lock Steve in a room with 2500 books and a pen)
Anyway, I love my book and the fact that once they sell out, that's it - that signed run is over and I'll forever have a "collectible" item - I'll be the envy of millions of entertainment starved people out there - just like the owners of the other 2499 books.
For the record, I haven't taken mine out of it's plastic cocoon, because I bought a softcover to be my reading copy, but if the number on that slip of paper on the back is any indication, it's #933.

It's weird that when I ordered Effy Mound (I ordered that seperately) I didn't get a customs charge then. It's random.
no, it's less expensive. there usually is a certain amount you are allowed to import for free. the sketchbooks are probably below that border and the hardcover above, since it costs more than twice as much. also, customs officers tend to open heavier or bigger packages more often if they can't read the value on the sticker.

I think the misconception some folks have is that they believed they prordered the book to get a low number copy of STH.
Although there were hints that there might be some limited edition STH hardcover with a Purcell's signature, we, the consumers, did not know if all of them would have it, yet alone numbered. From the old blogs I read on this site, I would lead to believe that only a select few were signed and were probably given through internet contest; much like one of those Grickle(spell?) books. Furthermore, Telltale did the smart thing (either in case somethin like this would happen or if Purcell's signature was a last minute bonus, hence the reason that could have delayed the books) in that they did not say anythin about the numbered books until the hardcover were shipping.
So, for anyone who complained that they preordered the book to get a low numbered copy is not really true unless they knew beforehand by reading the staff of TT's minds.
It is like if you and a group of friends asked another friend named Bob to get you guys something at sdcc. He then returns to SDCC and gives you guys the stuff you asked for. In addition, he gives each of you a random figurine as a bonus. However, you are not happy with the bonus you get and demand Bob to exchange it with something else despite getting it for free.....
doom saber
07/07/2008, 12:07 pm
You think people would actually do that? Esp. ones who actually got the low numbers?
True. Also, how can TT keep track on who preordered or ordered the book online w/o spending at least several hours on it?
If such a suggestion ever happened, I can see how swapin books can be a problem. For instance, imagine buyn the book at SDCC and realizing that the booth person hands you a copy numbered 1. However, right after you(as in anyone) pay for the item, the same TT booth member realizes he/she gives you a low number and takes the book back. He/she then hands it to a person (who bought the book eariler on the tt site or at sdcc) who is swaping in a high number like 2324 and then hands you the other person's high number book that covered with donut and ice cream stains. That would suck even if you deserve the high number book. However, you don't deserve a used one for the price of a new one.
Also, who would be in their right mind to go all the way to SDCC, especially with the cost of the aftermarket prices, just to swap it for a low numbered book? Everyone loses in this situation, not just TT.

People buy the collectables and limited editions mainly because of two things. They can profit by selling them later on or they can be really happy that they got something special. Right?
But the thing was that we didn't knw the books were numbered until they shipped them. Sure, I bought the hardcover over the softcover because it is a collector's item, hence the cover. However, I didn't know they numbered it and I thought that was a nice touch even if it were number 2300 or 2345 or whatever. Having the number just makes my book unqiue and no, I won't swap with anyone with my opened book especially since I get attatched to stuff I received.
i'm not 100% sure, but i believe, by the time you could preorder the book, it was said to be signed and numbered.
you are right however, that swapping the books now, would be nearly impossible. assigning numbers according to preorder date would have been nice, but it was said beforehand on the forums, that it won't be possible...at least not with a lot of extra efford.

Hm, I got myself 1,306. This is a rather uninteresting number so far as I can tell, but I don't really care too much. It won't make me feel as bad about actually READING the book. Like, if I got #1, I'd probably not be able to even remove it from its wrapping. Same book, I know, but....
.....I didn't buy it in hardcover for its limited nature. I bought it *when* I did due to that(I didn't want the books to run out before I could get one), but....
I buy books to read them, not as decorative items. So this guy's gonna get read thoroughly and enjoyed. Wow this is nice paper. I don't think I've seen such nice paper in a book before. I just hope I don't break the spine by reading this book, because *damn* is it really, really nice and I know a replacement would be prohibitively expensive or impossible to come by.
Damn you Telltale and your limited editions! I just wanted a hardcover book! ;_;
....on a side note, does anyone have any of the earlier books? I want to see if the signature is longer on like, book number 51 than it is on book number 1,306. Because I'm wondering if Purcell started to get lazy after signing over 1,000 books. xD

I haven't looked at the signature thing, but Steve has wrists of steel, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were pretty consistent.

Wow, I'm late to this party. I got #983, myself. Woo!

Steve Purcell, an independent comic writer currently working for Pixar that has wrists of steel and produces drawings as a waste product.
He should add those comments to his resume. :D
"well, mr. purcell, you've been working for pixar several years. that does not impress us at all, but some guy on the internets says you got wrists of steel. so....you're hired.":D

Well, tabacco *would* have a bit more credibility than "Some guy on the internet". Seeing as they are...uh...co-workers? Or something. =p

Just got mine literally a minute ago, after just over a week of rushing to the door in anticipation whenever the doorbell rang. A guy came who i thought would deliver it, but he was delivering my Mum's new passport. I went back upstairs, sat down at the PC, and saw a parcelforce van drive down the street, but it did a u-turn and went back.
Then, the van pulls up again, and it turns out he hadn't see the house number.
I got 1350, which according to wikipedia is the year that:
England invaded France.
Battle of Les Espagnols sur Mer: An English fleet personally commanded by King Edward III defeated a Spanish fleet.
Hayam Wuruk became ruler of the Majapahit Empire.
the Black Death first appeared in Scotland.
I'm debating with myself whether to take off the plastic wrapping, or buy a paperback version to read.

I've thumbed through both the hardcover and the softcover with my greasy little mits mwhahaha. The paper is soooo nice. But i'll stick to reading the softcover for now, especially with a little toddler keen to add his own artistic mark to all our literature (cute but damned annoying! he wants to sign all the books too awwwww)
REMOVE the plastic wrapping, if not just so you can caress that cover and flip through those wonderful pages.. mmm (ok, now i'm starting to make it sound like comic book porn.. tisk)
Steve's wrists of steel are legendary, least.. they should be.

is it washable?
can you put numbers in all the frames so that the toddler can know what colours to use when colouring in?

Dude, that messes people so much. That's how people end up calling the color "red" the number 5.

I so would too! hahaha. I'm still so tempted to get "baby's first Mythos" because hey, everyone wants to teach their kids about the wonders of the great eldritch evils.

Nope! No one's reported that yet, so you get first honors of having a series of numbers that are sequential neighbors*!! YAY!!
* = Sequential Neighbors meaning numbers that are found in the same four digit grouping but not nessicarily in sequential order.

what number sam and max: Surfin' the highway (hardcover edition) did you get? I plan on taking all numbers posted and compiling a list of corresponding usernames. Obviously this isn't going to be complete since not everyone who bought a copy frequents the forums, but i thought this might be cool.
i'll try to update the list every day or two.

What'd be really creepy is if you got number 666. It'd probably mean that this book will break easily and cause something terrible (like, say, your toast burning) to happen. Damn Satan!

or if you had 999 and mistakenly started reading the book upside down from the back...hmmm, satan wins again.. curse you big man

That almost makes me feel lucky for what we get charged.
That makes me glad that I wasn't charged a customs fee for four CDs I ordered from Japan!

how much did you order? only the hardcover or half the ttg-store?? because if you only ordered the book....that would be over 100% import tax/customs fee. that's quite ridiculous, if you ask me.

Ordered the hardcover and season one soundtrack. The import tax was not that much, but the customs fee was a joke.
