I like the YELLOW one better because the spiral in the white one kind of "interrupts" Sam & Max.

Yellow; the white one seems too plain, and I can barely make out the spiral in the background.

Yellow. The minimalism of the white is nice, but minimalism doesn't really go along with Sam and Max. ;)

I had to go with the white, but really any cover in which the characters' firearms are so predominantly showcased can do no wrong.

I'd like the white better if the gray spiral were more noticeable... but otherwise I chose yellow.
Edit: After coming back a second time to look at it, I find myself preferring the white one. It just looks more like a Wii game case.

The white one. That image of Max has sort of a yellow tint, so he blends in and becomes kind of lost in all that yellow. He "pops out" a lot more on the white box.

I picked the yellow one, but I can think of this: The darker back round color is light blue, and the lighter backround color is a darker but still somewhat light blue, and the logo is written in red.:p:cool:

I have to say the white. The pair (and the red logo) pop out much better than they do on the yellow version.

I don't like either one. The yellow is a bit of an eye sore, especially with it's massive lensflare. The white is too plain, and very underwhelming.
Actually, the yellow is sort of better because atleast it suggests action (as in, they are running away from an explosion) whereas the white version just looks like the characters were clear-cut from some render and pasted onto a white background with a white spiral thrown in.
The design for the PC version of season 1 were much better. It had stronger colours and stood out more. It also depicted the characters properly as you had a baseball bat, an oversized gun, and a police badge.
The typography for the title was a lot better. Here it's very plain looking, relying on the font to make it stand out, whereas the PC version cover had an interesting composition.
I suggest you take the yellow cover as base and try changing the yellow colour to perhaps a dark red as well as making the flare bigger but toning it's intensity down greatly.

hard. No offense, but white looks too generic even though I like that cover. I think you guys should do a blue cover. Yellow looks cool but it is too yellowish since max is yellow in that image

I have to go with the white one, it seems so much cleaner and slicker. The yellow one looks kind of aged and the glow is too distracting. Plus, the red text is cooler. A Steve Purcell illustration, however, would look so much nicer. It just needs more texture ... These two options are really kind of bland.

I'd vote for the yellow one if it was tweaked so Max stood out a bit more from the background, agree the white one has too generic a look.

Yellow. It makes the cover have more action, compared to the bland and nonexciting white one. For me minimalism doesn't work well on white backgrounds for some reason (games, magazines, whatever).

If I have to choose between just those two, it's the yellow. It least it has some variance in it, while white makes it look like you couldn't be bothered to put in a background.

I prefer the yellow. It stands out more and looks a lot more action-packed. The white however, looks very bland and lazy. I also like how the blue text goes so well with Sam and the background with Max. It's like Max is the cause of the explosion and Sam keeps their name, reputation, and professionalism together........ The colo(u)r scheme describes the characters well!:)

Apparently, The Adventure Company (http://www.samandmax-wii.com/index_wii_eng.html) feels that the two covers should be mixed!

That is a temporary box from long before we even got to this point.
Also, yeah, we're not really looking to do a major redesign (but thanks everyone for the suggestions :D). Just curious to get people's gut reactions about the yellow vs. the white.

06/21/2008, 09:57 am
I wouldn't choose any of the two. To be frank, both look quite boring. If this is supposed to be the Wii version of Season One, why not re-use the original artwork from the PC edition? It's much better than CG on a plain background.
The thing that bothers me the most on these covers is the light source from behind the characters. I know it's there to make everything look better so that characters don't look like they're simply copied and pasted, but without any real background it looks like some cheap photoshopping.
I always loved how Steve Purcell stuffs so many things into his covers. Take the original "Hit the Road" cover, or comic book covers. You see this cover and you know that there's alot of crazy stuff going down in this game.
If you've decided you will go with this particular artwork, I suggest you work on the background. Maybe the DeSoto parked in the background just behind the characters with the headlights on [for the light flare]? Isometrically positioned, parked in front of Sam & Max office? Maybe some bugs and rats stuck in the grill and some other details like that?
What you have at the moment doesn't work as a good cover, at least not for me. It's a bit like "So ... I've pasted the characters, pasted the logo, added the flare ... so now what? Do you want the background to be yellow or white?"
P.S. - While I was writing this, Emily posted a few words. With no major redesign in mind, you could still do a nicer background under the layer with characters. I vote DeSoto + street.

White, because Max pops out better on that one. Probably because his fur is a bit yellow-ish, making him disappear in the first box.

The yellow one. As it has already been said, it gives the idea of Sam & Max running away from an explosion, so it fits their destructive nature better than both of them jolly jumping around in a peaceful white background.

See this is why I think the white one would be better.. So many of those boxes have so much going on them.. With the white one, you see a rabbit and a dog holding massive guns.. nothing else, but that is an unusual image and you would think people would pick it up and wanna read the back.. the yellow one sam and max get a little lost for me.

I perfer the white. The yellow seems more of an eyesore. Just too loud and obnoxious looking. Especially with the lens flare.
i dont llike the yellow one personally, but the white one i love, it makes sam and max themeselves stand out alot, and it instantly grabs the buyers attention, especially if the buyer never seen sam and max before. The white one will also go with the rest of the case, considering the case is white, and alot of other areas on the case are white, itll make it stand out so much better and makes the game alot more appealing to pick up and read the back to find out more.
The yellow one, i dont know, i really dislike it, it doesnt make it stand out at all, and it makes it not very appealing to pick up and find out what the game is about, also it doesnt make sam and max stand out at all, making the game blend in with the rest of the games on the shelf.
Also remember not everyone has seen sam and max so you want something bold and the main characters to stand out, to stand out from the rest and to catch the browsers eye.
I would be disappointed if the yellow one was the chosen colour, and if it was chosen ill go to the effort of going somewhere to get the white one printed

From the replies that I've been reading, everyone has made valid points when it comes to both covers. I found myself agreeing with most of them, therefore making it difficult for me to decide! I really like the yellow, but I think it would look a lot better if Max was whiter so he'd stand out a little more. The white looks very nice, too, but, as some have already stated, it doesn't really fit Sam & max.
There's no apparent light source to explain why Max looks yellow on the white box, so he doesn't look right in the middle of all that plain whiteness.
The yellow box looks great, though. So I like it better.

I pick the white cover -- provided that the blue spiral winds up looking more visible on the print than it does on my monitor. It's a really close call, but the white one does have the advantage of Wii brand recognition, and it does "pop" a little more. The yellow one is nice, but I guess it's sort of in-between the two extremes of having a very detailed cover and a very simple cover. But in this case, extremes are good.
By the way, I don't think what's on the yellow box qualifies as "lens flare" -- that implies some diffraction effects caused by a bright light, including light circles and rainbow-looking stuff. This is really just a bright light.

But tone down the lens flare a bit. At first I thought Sam was a bit transparent! And it was hard to spot the yellowish Max.
So no lens flare on Sam's leg, a bit more white on Max (use Quick'n'Brite), red logo, fix typo and I'd be happy to buy it for my brother who has a Wii.

I love the yellow one! :)

Neither. But if I had to choose, I would pick the yellow (even though the light source is... distracting...).
As a few people had suggested before, I would highly suggest going for a redesign or add something extra to what the cover already has. I know the main idea was probably to make it clean and simple, but it's too simplistic as it is.
Also, I have a problem that the cover does not describe the game very well. Don't assume that some random person will walk into a game store and automatically know who Sam and Max are if they saw this cover.
I'm not going to hide that I'm a new S&M fan. I just started playing the games early this year. Before then, my only knowledge about them were: it was an adventure game series and the main characters are animals. It was only when I actually browsed a few of Steve Purcell's drawings that I figured out that they were "cops" and starting to get a gist of their personalities. (Why I don't read game reviews or something? I don't know, I just don't.)
But definitely the fact that they were police (and that they looked like a fun duo) hit a key with me. There are so many games out there with animal protagonists, and guns (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/image/926672.html?box=63236) won't set S&M apart from the gaggle. I looked over Hit the Road, Season 1 for PC, and the animated cartoon's box arts. They all have signs that they are police: their two-toned desoto on the first two covers and a "shield stamp" on the cartoon (as if "Freelance Police" wasn't clear enough in the title).
So, if I may ask a very important question: Why make a Wii version?
I want to say, and I hope you all agree, along the words of 'to gain new fans who wouldn't have given a glance at S&M before because it was exclusively a PC game.' Therefore, I think there should be different strategy for the premier cover. This is, after all, their first game console game...
Sorry for making such a long reply. I guess I needed to get that off my chest. ^^;

As it stands now, it's yellow, with red text, with Max lightened up a bit to be less yellow, and with the light burst (it's not a lens flare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_flare)) reduced slightly. It's still subject to change a bit at TTG's and The Adventure Company's discretion, but everyone's feedback has been very helpful to the process :)

As it stands now, it's yellow, with red text, with Max lightened up a bit to be less yellow
All right! Good call :D

As it stands now, it's yellow, with red text, with Max lightened up a bit to be less yellow, and with the light burst (it's not a lens flare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_flare)) reduced slightly.:)
So... are you going to post it? We're (or at least I'm) looking forward to seeing the finished product.
I think we're waiting for it to be officially 100% finished and approved by all parties.

The yellow one looks like a GOTY edition. As such, I prefer the white cover. However, I do wonder how the cover would look with a light blue background. I think it would make the characters stand out, add a touch of color, and still fit in with the Wii motif.
*EDIT* Gaaah! How did I not notice this thread had a closed poll and six pages. Oops... well, looking forward to seeing the game in stores when that happens.

So is this box from Amazon the final box? (Can't remember if they had this art up before the poll or not)

It's reasonably close, but not the final art.
The images on the first page of this poll are both far closer to the final art than that Amazon shot.
an ad for it

Cool! The box in the corner there isn't final -- it's a temp one, but they had to send that ad out to get printed early.
Here's the box which went out for submission:

White, but make the swirls in the background more prominant. It's clean, inviting, and says something about the season (but not too much).

I still think the two PC boxes, especially the one we get through this website, are nicer. But this box isn't bad either, and they do look like they're running off to a rather exciting adventure. You can see the excitement in their dark, featureless eyes!

I hope JoWood doesn't change the box for the Australian release. Good jorb!:D
Can you post a bigger version of the final box?
hmm, the final box is somehow missing a telltale-logo..

It's probably on the back with all the other logos, seeing how TTG has their name scrawled across the top ABOVE the title.

It looks better with the box quote and logo.

It is indeed on the back "with all the other logos" (Telltale's and the Adventure Company's :)).

Really missed the boat here, but a stark red background would have probably been best; it conflicts the least with the character colors.

Random fact: Nintendo only allows the logo of the publisher of record on the front of the box.
Even though Telltale and The Adventure Company are co-publishing this game, TAC is the publisher in the eyes of Nintendo, so their logo goes the front.

...so, other than being the people to look to for the best games I've ever played that nobody's ever heard about, what *is* The Adventure Company, anyway? Are they just the guys that have the infrastructure to distribute games in box and disc form, or what?
I'm just curious as to their role in this, and also why Nintendo considers them to be the "main" publisher. Was it just random, or what exactly?
The Adventure Company is a registered retail publisher with Nintendo, which they presumably set up when they were publishing their other games on the Wii (eg that Wii Agatha Christie game). We're registered online publishers with Nintendo (SBCG4AP coming soon to a WiiWare near MeeWare!), but as far as I know, we didn't bother becoming a retail publisher in regards to Sam & Max Wii, because we were partnering with someone who already is one. They have the experience and infrastructure to mass produce games and to get them into stores. They're also in it together with us to go in on advertising purchases, and stuff. It's nice to not go it alone on something like our first self-published console retail release; having a co-publisher who wants the game to succeed just as much as you is a nice thing to have.

We got the finalized box art, and it's good. Now, TELLS US WHEN THE GAME'S COMING OUT! I need the information, so I can tell my co-workers over at GameStop the release date, and spread the word over to the over branches of the GameStop Corporation.

No specific date yet, but DreamCatcher/The Adventure Company (http://www.samandmax-wii.com/index_wii_eng.html) (Telltale's co-publisher in the US) says August 2008. Does that help?
