now to my question:

So just spent like 2 hours reading every post in this forum...gotta say, i haven't been this excited about a game since gabriel knight 3...efmi was a bit too clunky for me for a monkey island game...i usually hate 3d adventures which burden you with the third dimension as opposed to enhancing the experience. Grim Fandango is the only 3D adventure that comes to mind that got it right (and dreamfall). I hope the movement through environments is fluid and efficient...also I hope the quick exit is implemented in the game, because i hate walking across the same screens over and over! Cant wait cant wait! tonight i'll dream of monkeys!

Question for the team: Is Elaine's lipsync fixed? I'm refering to the game's intro, the line "And now we're going to die, again. Heh, wonderful!"
Yeah, that was fixed a couple days before the gameplay video released. Sadly, the footage had already been captured. :/

It's so funny how people blow EVERYTHING out of proportion so quickly.
So are you guys still tweaking the game today; or as you said before "even down to the last minute"? Or are you basically taking a big rest before the big day hits?

Wow. I just read this entire thread after pre-ordering the game. I've got a couple of questions that I'm fairly sure haven't been covered.
1) What programming language do you guys use? You also mentioned somewhere earlier that you use some custom stuff. (sorry I can't be more specific, this is a long thread!) I'm a British Computer Games Development student at University, but I've little experience of how a company actually uses the tools and skills I've been using. Sorry if that question's a little vague!
2) I read the worldofmi.com interview with Ron Gilbert (mentioned earlier in this thread). It came across that he was kinda grumpy that people had gone and continued the series in a way that he hadn't planned. But then you guys got in contact with him about this project. Is that grumpy face just a show or is he actually annoyed that the series has turned out differently. If he is, does that frustrate you?
3) I gather that this forum will stay open until at least the end of the series. I'm guessing you'll have threads where we can respond and ask questions about each episode as they come out. Are we allowed to suggest changes and new ideas, or does that come across as arrogant? (since you guys are the professionals)
I'm sure I'll be back with more questions after the launch tomorrow! Can't wait!
I can at least answer that first one. We use LUA for the game scripting and C++ for the back-end coding and tool building. We actually use a *lot* of proprietary tools. With the way we develop games over such a short period, we needed the tools to be custom build to match our production schedule. We've tried to design as much of the system in such a way that anyone in the company, regardless of background or training, can pick up the tools and be competent within a few days.

Thanks for the quick reply! Sounds like a nice system.
I've only just finished my first year at uni, so at the risk of revealing that I actually know very little, I might make a few more comments.
Back in the day when they were making the first Monkey Island game they were using SCUMM, which is presumably a proprietary tool. Someone (I think it was Ron) mentioned that they upgraded the SCUMM system to recognised more fonts so they could do the upside-down text after the circus-cannon puzzle. Is it right to assume that you often upgrade and improve your system? Is it a risk in using a custom system that you might not innovate as much with the technology?

Its a full moon on the 7th...hmmmm. Will look for a moon in the game.
I got no major questions they had to been all asked before. I will ask this. Is this fallowing closer to the original story that the creator of Monkey Island 1 and 2? Or is this you guys making your own story for it? I read that you talked to the creator of Monkey Island but I'm wondering who's story this is.

Is it right to assume that you often upgrade and improve your system? Is it a risk in using a custom system that you might not innovate as much with the technology?
We are *constantly* updating the system. I think with custom tools, you actually end up innovating more because you know the inner working of your tools so well. It's easy to walk up to one of the programmers and say "would this be possible to do." And if it isn't possible, they can usually suggest some reasonable work-around.

Mr Grossman!
Would you be so kind as to put to bed the rumours surrounding the ending of Monkey Island 2. I know you worked on it, and Bill Tiller has spoken about it, so I thought you could possibly lay it to rest?
*spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't played the original MI games*
The rumour goes like this: There was always the idea that the ending of Monkey Island 1 would be that it was all just a Calvin & Hobbes style dream. That ending was never put in place, obviously, but parts of it were used for the ending of MI2... In the very end, though, two things were added to bring it back to the world of MI and keep the door open for any sequels: "Chuckie's" glowing malevolent eyes, and Elaine back on Dinky Island wondering where Guybrush was, pondering if LeChuck might have put a SPELL on Guybrush.
This, of course, means the poor old Guybrush did indeed have a spell put on him, but was there ever a moment when you thought about leaving the ending as was... Just in the amusement park?
Is this all true? Thanks so much for your reply!
Ah, i have read some of the creators inverviews and posts saying that he [not 100% sure if this is right] no longer had control over the Monkey Island story line. He said [again not 100% sure more like 75%] that the true ending has YET to been shown. This is what i have learn...is it right? don't know...so yes I ask the same question as he did!
Monkey Island 2 had a horrible ending. Seriously, it made MI2 the weakest in the series (until Mi4 came out).
I think 3 did it's best to salvage a plot from that ending, and most people will agree 3 was the best.

That's kinda similar to one of my questions a page or two back.
It's all about whether we accept Ron Gilbert's word as a canon or the canon of the subsequent games. If Ron's as stingy about this subject as he (occasionally) sounds, I can imagine this constant debate over the "correct" MI canon to be frustrating for the script-writers for Tales.
On the other hand, Ron sounds like a nice guy. Maybe I'm making a fuss where there isn't one. Somebody'll answer my question and let me know...

I'm not really sure if that question's getting outside your job description, Will (I'm not really sure what your job is really). Are those kind of design decisions made by other people? I guess "code monkey" is the phrase. If that is your job, you could answer another question for me: How much creativity do you get within your particular job? I always imagine the designer making all the creative decisions. Is that true and does it frustrate you, or are there loads of things you get to be creative with?
Hopefully part of those two paragraphs made sense/was aimed at you!

I think you will find you are in minority in this opinion. In all polls on Monkey Island fan boards that I have seen had LeChucks Revenge in the well deserved first position with Secret trailing by about 20%.
And I think the ending was pure genius. Monkey Island 2 is a masterpiece in my opinion and one of the greatest games of all time.

Well I'm just killing time until Tales comes out!yeah the ending to mi2 blew my mind. twice. once with the carnival  then once again with elaine standing by the hole wondering where guybrush went . it left so much to the imagination and created this wonderful mystery. it was a brilliant ending. best out of all 4 games, in fact. (monkey robot? urgh. cover lechuck in ice and sail away roll credits? uGHH. rootbeer lechuck to death and watch him explode in the sky? ok that was pretty damn cool. but still, MI2 had the best ending, in a lot of people's opinions).

Always controversial, isn't it? Some hate it, others love it, not too many opinions in the middle. Having a cliffhanger like that would have been a much better idea had Ron or any of us actually worked on the next game. Which, of course, we didn't, and poor Jonathan and Larry had to figure out what to do with it on their own. I thought their game was rather good.
I'm not going to say anything about what was or was not originally intended to follow that cliffhanger. I would caution you not to put too much faith into any particular rumor you might hear about it. Those who know don't tell, and those who tell don't know. Make up your own mind about what it means - that's what poetry is for (and, um, also the bizarre endings of funny computer games).

I guess my thoughts were from a design point-of-view. I wonder if you guys might design some bits in a certain way just because that's the way it's always done in your games and with your system. Or are you guys too creative for that?
Well it's always a good idea to design within your core competency. We do this one thing very well, therefore it's a good and safe idea to do that some more. Stuff outside of the norm can be new and exciting, but is often a lot harder to implement. As such, it runs a greater risk of falling flat and just not being that interesting. That said, I think we try to keep a good balance between the two things. I think in the initial design phase we end up throwing around a ton of ideas regardless of how hard it would be to actually do, and then we end up weeding down ideas until we have a produceable game.
If that is your job, you could answer another question for me: How much creativity do you get within your particular job? I always imagine the designer making all the creative decisions. Is that true and does it frustrate you, or are there loads of things you get to be creative with?
Actually, I'm just Lead Tester. In short, I play the games. So you would probably assume I have absolutely zero creative input. The way we are set up though, we have a pretty free flow of ideas. The designers are very open to ideas, and I'm constantly walking over to the designers and programmers to hash out ideas and fixes. I've got my hands in a bit of everything.

The designers are very open to ideas, and I'm constantly walking over to the designers and programmers to hash out ideas and fixes. I've got my hands in a bit of everything.
To elaborate on this, the kinds of creative input from a tester most likely to be addressed involves devising situations well off the regular path of the game in which the way the characters act make no sense. Like if you solve a puzzle that ends up torching a characters home, should he still be cheerful when you meet him next time? We also try to think about the weird things a player might try to solve a puzzle, because even if it's wrong, it might be a really good idea, and that's a good opportunity to steer the player in the right direction.
We're also in a good position to help designers recycle existing content creatively in crunch times (when generating new animations and voices will be a strain), like at the end of the Homestar audition in SBCG4AP 103. If you wait too long to solve the final leg of that puzzle, the timing will be thrown off (since it's a music puzzle) and you won't succeed even if you had the right answer, so Mike was trying to figure out the best way to let people know they needed to be quicker, and I remembered the line "Too late!" when burning Strong Sad's paper work in 102. Now the puzzle works just fine!
Hi all!
I just can't sleep so I decided to write my first post here just before the release :)
I think I am the true Monkey Generation, being 28 now, I was about 11 when I first got my hands on MI2. It was the ultimately cool game then, and for me, it still is. LOTS of awesome graphics, funny characters, great atmosphere. It also gave me inspiration to learn English :)
I loved it so much that at first I was too critical towards new episodes. I've always loved 320x200x256col pixel graphics (I still do), I am quite conservative in general. But after a few hours of play time I started appreciating the cartoon-style of CMI and the 3D graphics of EMI too. Now I really like ALL MI games. The five episode TMI also sounded a bit strange for me at first and I was a little bit afraid that its style had changed too much... but having all these great names behind it, I am confident that I'm going to love this game too...
If I have to make a preference order of MI games, it would be MI2, CMI, MI1, EMI. But I love all of them, for different reasons. All of them had their different charming style.
Oops, almost forgot: my all time favourite visual joke is Stan's suit. In MI1 and MI2 its pattern was stationary on the screen while Stan moved. I suppose it was mainly because it was hard enough to make ANY pattern in 320x200 resolution. But in high resolution cartoon-style CMI the pattern of the suit still didn't follow Stan's movements even thought is would have been easy to do so. Even in EMI, where it was actually HARDER to put a stationary pattern on the 3D suit, they did it :) I laughed a lot when I first met Stan in EMI. It was both funny and giving some respects towards the original MI1&2 games.
I'm really curious if I'll meet Stan again and if I do, how his suit will look like :)

I wonder how long we have left? If it wasn't released unitl say 5pm or somthing i would get some sleep. I suppose it doesnt really matter when i get it. I guess im just too excited.
I think i started playin Monkey island when we got our first amiga when i was about 6 or so, we got the Lucas Arts Games collection, which had Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Loom, Indiana Jones, and Zak Mckrakken. I used to play it for hours but got stuck when i couldn't figure out where to find a helmet. I didnt find out it was a pot under the stove in teh bar until after the amiga broke. So i didn't actually get very far until i was about 14-15 i think when i was able to play it agian. After that i played 2 and eventualy 3. BOth of whish were great. I bout 4 when i seen it in a shop for the ps2 but it wasnt really the same as the others.
The years past by, im 21 now and i have been patiently waiting for the news that a new Monkey island would be coming. But you were very sneaky and managed to keep it a secret.
Now that we know its here in only a matter of hours or so. Im just as excited now as i was back when i first played the Monkey Island.
Im not sure what to do now. Wait up? or just sleep and get it when i wake up.
It would be nice if you could come up with a time scale of maybe how long we got left till the release.

Hi all!
I just can't sleep so I decided to write my first post here just before the release :)
I think I am the true Monkey Generation, being 28 now, I was about 11 when I first got my hands on MI2.
I'll be 29 this month, and my first PC game was the original Monkey Island - it started a love-affair with adventure games that I've never lost. When I saw that this was coming out (along with the special edition of SOMI) this month, it was like a dream come true. No real questions for the team, just a huge thank you for a great early birthday present!

I'll say. Lead Tester/Product Support, Focus Tester Wrangler, Pizza Picker-Upper, Toe-fu expert ...oh ... my bad, that's Dave.
So you're editors, in the publishing editor sense of the word. And like publishing editors, you aren't very well known by people outside of the industry, but you guys do a lot of work to make everything better. It's not a really brilliant insight, I know; I'm just trying to figure out what you guys do and translate it into concepts my little book-obsessed brain can understand.

What we really need is a countdown timer...
this is such a cool wedding present, came back from the honeymoon to find an e-mail about the comback of MI and I just had to have it... now it's exactly a month since the wedding and it should be here before I go to bed tonight... I wonder if I can survive at work tomorrow with no sleep? or if I can take a day off to play it!
I think TellTale should have talks with Funcom and secure the rights to create their epposodic title "Dreamfall Chapters"... Sequal to The Longest Journey and Dreamfall :) According to reports the story is all written but they don't have any available programmers as they are all busy with an MMO...

But I cannot wait that long!!
Look, some of us (like...those that live in California, ahem...me) will be at work at 9:00am. That means, I'll have to wait until 6:00pm PST knowing that the latest release of my favorite game has been available a full 9 hours before I've had a chance to play it.
But you know what? Come download time, I won't even care. I'll just kick back and enjoy.
Brand new Monkey Island tomorrow people!!!!
Merry Monkey Island Eve! Now get to sleep, so you can wake up in the morning to see what Santa Grossman brought you.
PS For the love of your mouse...don't hit refresh for eleven more hours. You're going to need the left click button to play the game

And it wasn't the first I played (Secret was).
Oh my, I'm off-topic aren't I? Well I'm just killing time until Tales comes out!
Monkey Island 2 is definitely my favourite and I played Curse of Monkey Island first.
Personally, I think Monkey Island 2 had a brilliant ending that could have been an interesting twist, however Curse of Monkey Island killed it in my opinion. I would love to have seen the original plan for the third installment, even if he created the game today but as an alternate sequel.
Either way, I'm just glad the series is still alive and I can play another enjoyable entry.
Oh and don't get me wrong, I love CMI, I just don't like the backstory they used for MI2's ending.

My first ever telltale game purchased, now im just waiting for the release!
I hope its a good one, ive been an obsessive MI fan since i first played it on my atari ST back in 1992, and didnt actually get to finish it until 1998 due to the atari running out of memory or something every time you entered the island fort! I had to buy the monkey island bounty pack for PC in 1998 to finally finish the game!
Anyway, cant wait to play this!

Always controversial, isn't it? Some hate it, others love it, not too many opinions in the middle.
Well, mine's pretty much in the middle. I didn't like the ending of MI2, but I didn't hate it, either. I'd only hate to think the stories of SMI and MI2 were just supposed to be thought up by a little kid, but the appearance of Elaine in the credits is proof enough for me that Guybrush was indeed under a spell.
And I LOVED CMI, too!
Now, I'm eagerly waiting for Tales to be downloadable...

MI 2 was the first I played when I was a child, and is my favorite (followed by MI and CMI). Love the finish, and agree with the idea that CMI did not use it well. But CMI is a good game, though.

Whilst we're waiting, I'm gonna resurrect the "which MI is best" discussion (I missed it whilst I was sleeping).
I played them all in the correct order (woo!) and I have to admit I like them in this order: Curse, Revenge, Secret, Escape.
For me, Curse was everything I'd always hope for from a more advanced tech Monkey Island. The combination of the art, music and voices was so beautiful and it really immersed me in the world. For me it's a game experience unlike any other.
I loved the twist ending on Revenge, and overall it's probably the best game from a puzzle point of view. I recognise it's brilliance, but I'm afraid Curse's charm wins for me.
I also quite enjoyed the way Curse tied up the loose ends from the end of Revenge. I don't like the idea that different designers had different ideas for the story of MI3, it makes me feel cheated as a follower of the series. So I just go along with whatever makes it into an official game, so I can have some sort of series story to follow. And it wasn't hard to agree with whatever Curse was telling me!

This is not directly related to the new Monkey Island series, but I'm gonna abuse my exclusive pre-ordering privileges especially for this occasion. Yes, I'm that opportunistic.
I was wondering when - or if - you guys will overhaul the Telltale engine, or built a new new one in the foreseeable future.
It occurred to me during the demo of Wallace & Gromit (and prompting a similar feeling watching the first trailer of TMI) that your graphics engine seems outdated. While both Sam & Max's and SBCG4AP's art direction hide it pretty good, it becomes more apparent with your new IPs.
Just wondering what the plan is, if indeed there is one. I know you're a small but dedicated company, so I was curious if stuff like that is even on your agenda. ;)

Really? Are we doing the 'When's it out' dance yet again?
Oh well, something back on topic to be answered after the release, which I'm sure haven't been asked before.
What version control software do you guys use?
;)

personally, i think graphics shouldn't get in the way of story...or take away from it...i havent played w&g, but scored the new episode with tomi...i thought the graphics served s&m well.

Ok i went to bed a 6am cos i waited all night. I just woke up at 2pm and Oh Noooeeeess its still not out yet... Now i feel even more excited. Must... have.. Monkey Island...
Hmm if it was a virtual waiting outsides the shops simulation i would have had a virtual copy 5 hours ago. :P
Im sure it wont be to long now. We are a very impatiant lot arn't we?
I hope some people dont get to upset when they complete the first episode too quickly and have to wait a whole month for the next release. So calm down guys and savor the fiasta' o flavor!

Caribbean Queen
07/07/2009, 05:46 am
What does this mean?
Pleeease people don't be so silly. Of course we're all excited because we haven't seen an episode of out favourite game in nine years :), but does this "I can't wait" stuff make you any happier? I hope I didn't start all this by writing "I can't sleep" in my first post. I couldn't sleep then because I had worked on an important software project and my head was too full of algorithms. Everyone please do something else until it comes out. Come back after a few hours and don't break the server with pressing "download" button in the second it appears. Or else we'll have to wait much longer :)
If you really can't get your mind off MI, start playing one of the old episodes. Just to get into the mood.

Oh I'm playing world of warcraft while I wait. :D
Its like haviung a nintendo DS at a store waiting to open except better :)
Or I would be if the servers were up, guess I'll play something on my 360 or wii.

I'm not sure about that. Isn't it strange that a team member has not posted anything yet? This whole "waiting til they are in the office thing" seems strange to me. A world-wide release date of the 7th has been officially blown. I'm jest sayin' Arrgh.
They're in their bed now. And even it's not the case, that mean they spend all the night to ensure everything is ok (or drinking some champaign...).
By the way, we're almost there. :D

I don't think I'll be here when it finally gets released. I'm already having forum database problems too. :( But I'll be back tonight! Then the swashbuckling shall commence! Thank you telltale games!

Got some database errors accessing the forum. It Starts.
Somewhere, deep within the caribbean, something stirs. Storm clouds gather. Rain starts to fall.
Two ships will clash. Jokes will be cracked. A villain will be "defeated". A pirate wannabe will make a terrible mistake. If you listen very carefully, you can hear the creak of masts and the flap of sails. And echoing eerily across the rolling waves, from out of the darkness, comes a demonic laugh of premature triumph...

They have said when it will be. It will be during the day, Pacific Time, on the 7th. It is currently 8:15AM Pacific. It'll probably be another hour or so.

With the huge mob crowding the forums right now, will TellTale's servers even be able to handle so many simultaneous downloads? Or will we be downloading slowly until next week before we get to taste the sweet sweet monkeyjuice?
