View Full Version : The adventure begins... at E3!

This week, several members of our team will be at E3 showing off Tales of Monkey Island, giving interviews, and subsisting on candy bars from the vending machine when the lunch lines turn out to be too long having a grand old time. And as a Tales of Monkey Island preorderer, we're going to let you in on the joys of being at E3 -- just like you were here with us!

Not sure what the web access will be like at the show, but we'll try to check in each day and let you guys know how it's going and where to look for Tales of Monkey Island coverage. I'll kick it off by saying that after a mostly uneventful flight, I arrived in LA and checked in to the hotel to find six boxes of Tales of Monkey Island buttons waiting for me. And that's only half the stash! The rest will be arriving tomorrow. We'll be handing them out at the show - hopefully in an amusing fashion. Watch later this week for pictures. 'Til then, here's a shot of the buttons, to tide you over...

http://files.telltalegames.com/blogs/e32009/monkey_buttons.jpg

I'm off to find some lunch (fully recognizing that this could be my last real meal for a week), then heading to the convention center to get our booth set up. First interview's tonight, with Adventure Gamers (http://www.adventuregamers.com), then the show officially opens tomorrow!

Did LucasArts get a new president or something? Those aren't Star Wars things, but yet there they are on the site. It makes my head swim. How soon till the apocalypse?

Meh I don't like those things, the t-shirt looks cheap (and I'm not too fond on their take on Guybrush.... especially his hair), and I would NEVER have their cover poster on the wall when I can have the one Steve Purcell made

That said... I hope we get some fine Monkey Island merchandise in the Telltale store :D (T-shirts!)

And wow Emily, I hope there's a way for us to get some of those buttons too! I can't believe you actually have a "Ask me about" button :D

This is AMAZING. Thank you Telltale for bringing more Monkey Island :)

Especially with Dave Grossman et al involved.

I think the look of this is great. Far better than the last two games (although I enjoyed them both). I think that this will have the 'feel' of the original games that I grew up with.

Thank you!!!!

/sigh, didn't miss E3 until this post.

Been away since they had that little issue with too many Gamestop Employees, I wasn't one of them, but I was just as into the swag. I have a friend going this year, I'll text him to look out for you.

Not nearly as exciting as these buttons, but if you load any of Telltale's *other* games up over the next week or so, you'll see a big Monkey Island advertisement featuring the same art.

They did, actually. His name is Darrell Rodriguez, and he's a big Monkey Island fan. :)

Well, if he's the one responsible for allowing Telltale to license Monkey Island, and also for green-lighting the remake, then he's a good man in my book. Could this be a sign that - gasp! - Lucasarts once more cares about it's classic (and best) properties?

Whatever the case may be, if I were to entrust the future of a much loved classic franchise to anyone, it'd be to you guys/girls at Telltale Games - I can't think of a a more capable crew of scurvy, no-good, grog-addled, filthy, thieving, sneaky, cut throat pirate lowlifes!

Hm. Perhaps my "pirate lingo" didn't quite work out to be the complement I meant it to be... ;)

Hi fellow private pirates :)

I love those buttons, especially the "Ask me" one. I think the evolution shirt was funny too but it didn't explain where the 3-headed monkey fits in ;)

I'm in a total MI media blitz today since finding out the news and am ecstatic! I was happy a few days ago when I saw Telltale re-upped the "Summer of Sam & Max" but apparently they'll be sharing the summer with a few monkeys too. Hopefully Max plays nice with them.

Looking forward to more E3 news, thanks again Telltale :)

We had a great meeting with Dante from Adventure Gamers last night. Here's his preview: http://adventuregamers.com/article/id,1024

After that, Kevin, Dave, and Lindsay (our office manager who's experiencing her first ever E3) went out to a really weird Japanese dinner. I might post a picture of it if my stomach ever recovers.

Up today: Mixnmojo interview at the hotel, then rush over to the convention center where we meet with press back to back to back. We'll also have Day 1 of our rent-a-pirates handing out buttons and making a general commotion near the front entrance of West Hall. I'm hoping they'll do some live action Insult Swordfighting. :D Pictures to come whenever we can get online to post them!

"Exactly" what I did. I don't think I even knew at the moment how much I was being charged , either. Yeah, as Jake said, our E3 room is really just a meeting room, intended to be more practical than flashy (and thanks for not just barging in... a few people did that today, which was awkward).

There should have been pirates afoot near the doors leading into the West hall Expo floor, handing out buttons. They'll be back tomorrow. Failing that, check back on the hour or half hour and you might be able to catch us with the door open. Or slide a note under the door. That could be fun. :D

We had a long and fruitful day at the show. Met with lots of press -- so many their names are jumbling together in my head. Not sure if any have posted their impressions yet. Got some pictures too, and will post them in a thread in a bit, but first Lindsay and Dave and I need to find some food, before we shrivel up into hungry little husks. Hoping to eat non-Japanese tonight... which might be tricky, since our hotel is smack dab in the middle of "Little Toyko".

US$29 p&h for a bunch of buttons alone? That's highway robbery! Its because they only have express Fedex, no UPS standard rates. It'd be easier to just make my own buttons, with blackjack, and hookers!

The lights! The music! The beautiful people! It's Vegas for gamers. Monkey Island is on the way. To celebrate, we brought in some resident pirates to get people excited and pass out our lovely buttons.

They've been a huge hit, insult sword fighting and creating overall pirate mayhem. In addition, we have a big sign at the entrance to the West Hall. Even though we love the sign (and we love Gary who created the sign for us) we won't be taking it home so it will be looking for a forever home after E3. Anyone who is either at E3, or in the LA area who wants it...send us something that screams Monkey Island and it's yours! Of course, it's also possible that we will just give it to the first inquiry. You can reach me at lspeth@telltalegames.com.

I was in the LucasArt booth most of the day, showing off our awesome game to enthusiasts. BTW, security is fierce there, they actually have storm troopers guarding the entrances.

That's great, I have to think that played a large part in LucasArts suddenly remembering that they used to make adventure games. The previous fellow, Mr. Ward, didn't seem too keen for them, thus the reason I bought all those 2015 calendars and marked every day as the expected release date of MI5. Guess that was a happy waste.

Seriously, it seemed pretty bleak for a long time there. I can't understand companies with old IPs that treat them like they never existed. If you respect and cater to my love for old games, I'll probably buy new ones from you as well.

We were on Gamespot's show today. Sorry I didn't think to post about it ahead of time, I didn't realize (or didn't really think through the fact) that it would be live. We also appeared on IGN and G4 today (the G4 segment will air tomorrow).

Here's another E3-related piece that you should read: MixnMojo (http://www.mixnmojo.com/features/read.php?article=tmipreview)

It kind of looks like the person moving Guybrush around is clicking on things to make him go places. That's promising.

Wonder what the solution is for getting onto that ship? Doesn't seem like the pirate on there wants Guybrush to get aboard. I'm ready to start solving some puzzles right now.

"Aye tradition! Whoever knocks the captain of the Screaming Narwhal off the deck, gets to be the captain!"

So it's clear what we have to do. And there seems to be some kind of rope winch near to where the soon-not-to-be-captain-anymore stands. Maybe one can do something with that? Oh, I just can't wait! :p

Gary! Thanks a lot for that poster image. I'll go to the city today to have it printed out on a huge poster! :)

Also, I would love to get my hands on a set of those buttons! Especially, of course, the "Ask me about..." one. Please, you've got to make them available to us somehow!

Please?

Some of it does, but there are points where the cursor is hovering over parts of the background and Guybrush seems to walk directly towards them. I'm wondering if it's a compromise of WASD and mouse movement. Something I'd prefer to just WASD alone for moving.

That depends on if they're clicking the background or clicking objects. If they're only clicking objects to move with the mouse and using the keyboard the rest of the time, then it's just like W&G, which makes puppies cry.

I'm really loving all the news/media we're getting on ToMI and it's only the first week. It's so often when a game is announced and nothing is really shown. Even with this game coming out soon, we really are getting a nice dose and I'm appreciative of it. As well as in a whole new dimension of excitement :)

I saw the video on gamespot (http://e3.gamespot.com/video/6211381/) before and the dialogue choices (especially the sock one) had me ecstatic that MI humor is fully back. THIS is the kind of humor that made me love this series from the start

What`s about the Buttons... a set of them in every pre-order-box !!!

As much as I keep failing in my LucasArts/previous TTG trivia (having messed up "rope sack", forgotten the ending of Loom and the beginning of Escape from Monkey Island, etc.), I think I can firmly say that the "Ask me about..." button came even earlier, having originated in Secret of Monkey Island. Cobb, a character from Loom (there spelled Cob), is sitting at a table in the Scumm Bar with an "Ask me about Loom" button on his shirt. If you do in fact ask him about the game, he gives you a full ad pitch complete with a flashing notice that it's an advertisement.

Thank god someone finally said it. That's the third time I've seen the pin gag get applied to the Grim Fandango badge, instead of the Loom badge which the GF badge was a reference to. You'd almost think some of these youngsters hadn't played Monkey Island 1, as it was one of the more prominent and memorable jokes of the game. They'll see for themselves by buying the upcoming HD version of it though I hope :)

Wouldn't you have been 9 when The Secret of Monkey Island came out? I think that qualifies as a youngster. Not dissing you; I was 7 at the time myself, and I first saw the game only a year or two ago. Hey, I got to it late, but at least I got to it! What about a "Blog" on the 'secret' forums? :) Giving us a bit of an insight of how things go at TTG, like how to develop a character from idea to drawing, from drawing to computer, from static computer model to animated interactive figure. Writing the story, how the ideas are involved. You know.. "making-of" stuff, to feed us with regular information the coming month :)

Tim is a fairly ordinary size, though I think in that picture he might be wearing some kind of towering Gene Simmons rock-and-roll uberboots. They make you do some weird stuff at E3 to promote your game (I don't even want to talk about Day of the Tentacle).

They don't say if Murray the talking skull is in the game, yet they say LeChuck turns into a human. WTH?

Really, which is the bigger spoiler?

I generally don't mind spoiling something that happens in the first five minutes of the series. Where it goes from there is what's interesting.

You can't say stuff like that and not explain it!

Well, there was this bucket of "tentacle slime," made out of who knows what, and we had to... no, I'm sorry, it's too painful, my therapist wouldn't want me to go on.

Just reading through the inside jokes page of MI3 and had to chuckle at the Grim Fandango one, as it is a button saying "Ask me about Grim Fandango", like the buttons of the Telltale crew say "Ask me about Monkey Island" ;)

http://www.worldofmi.com/features/trivia/injokes.php?game=MI3&s=1

It was completely misunderstood in the french version with a "Demandez-moi tout sur le fandango" (Ask me everything about the fandango"... When Grim Fandango was available, I had never done the link...

They make you do some weird stuff at E3 to promote your game (I don't even want to talk about Day of the Tentacle).

Oh my. Some people here have quite vivid imaginations, you know

Honestly, though. I'm reading this in the morning, and it was a well needed hearty laugh :)

Did they have to order that specially from Japan? (Kids, if you're looking at Sailor Moon fanart, and some if it is labeled "NSFW" just back away slowly. Trust me.)

I, on the other hand, am indeed fairly small - less than five and a half feet from stem to stern. But I'm much larger on the inside. I'm like the Tardis of game design.

See, I don't think of less than five and half feet tall as "fairly small", seeing how I'm just an inch and half over five feet, you giant. Besides, the best things come in small packages; diamonds, cell phones, Max, dynamite, etc.

Actually, it was "le fandango noir", the black fandango, but black can also have the grim sense, so it could have been a potential french title for the game, even though it wasn't.

Dick Clark painted a portrait of me, which is aging in my place. It's not pretty.

I was out with Emily and Lindsay one night during E3, and we all got carded. Once upon a time that was annoying, now it's a compliment.

Don't know if anybody posted it but >here< you can see a 14 min interview and gameplayvideo, but if you don't want to see anything of the game before playing you should not watch it

Wow those are extraordinarily long questions. Though I am happy to see inventory combining back, there are a few moments in Strongbad in particular where I was getting extraordinarily confused as I wanted to use things I had on other things.:)

Seconded! That'd be awesome, especially if it was point and click only. Get in touch with the BBC and make this happen. Any living Doctor is fine with me, but it might be nice to give the 6th Doctor a chance to redeem himself some more the way the Big Finish audioplays have.

Doctor Who just screams episodic adventure...I'm not sure why.

How did the people react when you announced ToMI? Were they excited?

People were very excited! Everyone I met with at E3 was twitching to some extent. (And not just because we were at a video game show.)

Okay, there was one guy who, when I asked if he'd ever played Monkey Island, replied, "I think my brother played part of one of them, and I might have watched him, once."

But everyone else was super stoked. :D

Telltale should put "Home of the real Monkey Island developers" under their logo... then again that'd probably lose them the franchise, so maybe bad idea :p

It was well timed as my roomate is a monkey island newb and I was already in mid education with him (we were about a quarter of the way through CMI at that point) - so pretty much everyone (myself included) were excited as hell. Actually, she wanted to be more like an astronaut, which is why she studied physics and astronomy in college. Yet she somehow ended up in EDP instead, which is called IT now? I think? So yeah, when I was eight I wanted to be Jim Hawkins from Treasure Island, and she wanted to be Kip Russell from Have Spacesuit Will Travel. My mom is actually a bigger Geek than I am.

AndyBundy

Whoever I showed MI1 and MI2 before, said:"I wouldn't play it because of the graphics and the interface." But they still had fun with the dialogues and that's what counted these days, though the graphics were nearly high-end at that time. Today too many developers think of astonishing graphical effects while leaving the concept of gameplay and fun in game way behind. You know that the developers had no fun programming if you don't see anything funny and original on screen (ingame). Sometimes jokes are created while working and you think:"Man if other people would've been here, they sure had something to laugh." Developers can use visuals to recreate a similiar situation. If you only talk about the situation half the fun goes away because you have to imagine the situation plus the reason why it's funny.

Silverwolfpet

I trully agree with you. Honeslty, I played fangames based upon Monkey Island that were better than anything new on the market at this moment (except ToMI :p). I actually bought a playstation 2 console, so that I can play old games that were based upon gameplay, rather than graphics.
