Great, cheers mate.
I think some things are a tad different than in the image I've been using, so I'll probably have to tweak the models, but it should work out alright.

uggffff i hate sounding defensive like i can't take critique. i guess i'm just trying to say i'm not going for a professional mi2 special edition look. i'm just messing about with what i've got and seeing what happens.
Hey, I think you have every right to be defensive. I would have been XD It's not very nice for you to put work into something and then have someone tell you it "accomplishes nothing" :/
and I wouldn't really call that constructive criticism either. I think it looks great! Make an animated gif to show off its 3D look ;)

Hehe, thought I'd join the 3D frenzy with a pre-alpha pirate 3D model. There's not much there yet beyond the basic shape (he hasn't even received his second eye yet), but what the heck, I still think it looks nice (keep in mind I just play around with modeling tools around once a year and never, ever use them for my daily work)

Sounds interesting, please do post.

08/17/2009, 03:51 pm
Really? Well... this is the new pic I'm working on.... He's suppose to look like Guybrush a little but act a little bit more like Elaine... He also is suppose to have brown hair.. If your wondering... my avatar pic was the original

08/17/2009, 04:00 pm
I can't quite imagine him in the current MI universe which just seems to dark and cynical for this fella, but if anybody ever makes a MI for children then they better take a look at this. He'd fit in perfectly.
About the eye: I was actually thinking about giving him an eye patch, but I'm not sure yet.
Miaharpy
08/17/2009, 04:04 pm
Well, he's only suppose to be a teenager. But hey, didn't Guybrush looked like he wouldn't be in any dark and cynical stuff either in earlier games? XD
hansschmucker
08/17/2009, 04:07 pm
*laughs* I guess you're right. It's just that I started my MI experiences with MI2 and never quite accepted MI1 (and to a certain extend MI3)'s style as the "one and only MI style".
Miaharpy
08/17/2009, 04:09 pm
XD I see. Oh! And your animated pirate is great too! :D Even I can't do that!
hansschmucker
08/17/2009, 04:12 pm
Hehe, if it can be done with a mouse then I can get reasonable results even without much practice, but give me a pen and I'm completely lost. Different people, different skills :)
Miaharpy
08/17/2009, 04:28 pm
Guess so ^_^. I'll try to draw more of my character to see if I get any better. lol
KEBSD
08/17/2009, 04:35 pm
I think he looks really great. I feel like Guybrush's humor is what makes the game so successful, however, so I wouldn't make him more Elaine-ish.
hansschmucker
08/17/2009, 04:39 pm
Miaharpy, just in case you understood it differently: "if anybody ever makes a MI for children then they better take a look at this. He'd fit in perfectly" was not meant like "he's not good enough for MI". I just think he's a different kind of character and needs a different scenario.
Miaharpy
08/17/2009, 05:15 pm
I think he looks really great. I feel like Guybrush's humor is what makes the game so successful, however, so I wouldn't make him more Elaine-ish.
I guess that is a good point.... but I want him to have some of Elaine's personality XD I think it would be crazy if like... Elaine is put through all the stuff Guybrush did.
Oh and hansschmucker, yeah... I was thinking of another scenario, not the same as Guybrush's. ^_^
KEBSD
08/17/2009, 05:39 pm
Fair enough, I guess that'd be cool, him being ruthless yet his attempts at fierceness squandered by his clumsiness :P
Hmm, now I must ask... his name?
Miaharpy
08/17/2009, 05:48 pm
Edward Threepwood... My friend's idea XD... Funny that was the first name he thought.

He does look like an Edward.
Do you have Photoshop? If so, you should color the image in and add dimension to it.

Edward Threepwood... My friend's idea XD... Funny that was the first name he thought.
Oh my! that is priceless.. reminds me of the Joke.
Q: Why does "Edward WoodWard" have 4 d's in it?
A: if it didn't it would be Ewar WooWar
and perfect in the theme of people making fun of the threepwood name.
Miaharpy
08/18/2009, 02:54 am
No... I don't have photoshop. I should though and learn how to use it :D. Glad you guys like Edward. It gets hard to think of what a good character would look like these days.
gingerale
08/18/2009, 05:47 am
Ooh, I was mentioned! Hooray!
But yeah, Edward Threepwood was my idea, and she named his (little?) sister Mayshell Threepwood. I've been drawing her. ^^
Here's my idea (http://80.221.19.94/stuff/mayshell.png) of the pose I might make her, bit of the clothes and some personality given to her.
Here's my idea (http://80.221.19.94/stuff/mayshell2.png) of the face and what she might look like, although I should round her face a bit and make her look younger. Edit: Of course, she also needs a hat.
They're just sketches though. Didn't spend that much time doing them. xD
My first post!
KEBSD
08/18/2009, 07:43 am

I'm sure Gingerale wouldn't mind, Edward and Mayshell were originally my ideas. It's just that we decided to make a deal that since I was drawing Edward, he could do Mayshell. ^^ And we end up naming the other's character. Pretty fun too.

A Maya learner's edition. As I said, I do this about once a year, not nearly often enough to get any other edition.
I created him by simply extruding faces from a box, then moving the vertices and so on and so forth. Finally, I made a subdivision proxy and that's it.

Thanks, and sure you can go ahead and mess with them all you like. ^^

"How appropriate, you fight like a...OW!"
I've been dying to do some fanart, especially after seeing Ryan's designs and sketches! I changed Guybrush a little bit so I wouldn't feel like I was flat out copying Ryan, kind of wanted to give him my own spin.
No idea why he's fighting an effeminate pirate...he was supposed to be a generic bad guy and after I drew his pose I thought it'd be way funnier to give him a flamboyant personality.
Mandatory Murray cameo of course, since after Guybrush he's my favorite Monkey Island character :)
Here's a bigger version if you are interested:

It's good but you messed up the nose.
A pretty female nose in a cartoon drawing should be be drawn very very lightly. You basically stick with the suggestion of shade, not with the actual form. The more lines you add to a female face after a certain limit, the older/uglier it looks.
Here I am shamelessly relinking my own work as that happens to be the perfect example.

08/25/2009, 07:21 pm
Dude.. seriously, The nose was the LEAST of my concerns.
I don't mean to sound like I can't take criticism, but with your lines and style, you must at least have some form of training or do this like a hobby. For me, other than the Grog thing I posted a while ago this was the first time I'd picked up a pencil in 10ish years.
I get that it was a feminine nose, and I did the best I could with no real ability to shade that well as Mogan's nose is mostly defined by the shade and what isn't there.
way to one up me, BTW. lol
bobdevis
08/25/2009, 07:31 pm
I didn't mean to humiliate you or something.
It's just that the first thing that stuck me was the nose.
As for skill; Everyone needs to start somewhere. I just wanted to make a point that sometimes it is better to NOT add a line, even if it's there IRL. You were asking for options after all.
It actually took me more then 8 hours to make my version of Morgan, so no I am definitely NOT an art pro :)
Btw, whats up with the similarity here.
We both have the nick 'Bob the Fish' (but in different languages) and we both decided to do a Morgan fan art. Creepy!

08/25/2009, 07:34 pm
yeah I porbably could have left the pencil line there rather than ink it for a better effect.

The fact that you don't listen to electronic music as a genre doesn't make my song unlistenable, it makes it not fit your musical taste. It's like saying that listening to chiptunes outside of videogames is wrong. The world is full of people that like to listen to electronic music at home, so don't write that my song is unlistenable or that I chose the wrong genre. Write that you don't like it. ;)

Hehe. Parodies. Fun! :D
Here's one I came up with set to the theme song of Gilligan's Island :):
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
that started back when Guybrush bought
This really rotten ship.
The brew was a mighty simple plan,
the recipe was sure
to take the crew on board that day
On a spell guided tour, a spell guided tour.
The weather started getting rough,
their conciousness was lost,
Then thanks to the magic of the voodoo brew,
the ocean had been crossed, the ocean had been crossed.
The ship was next to the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With ghost pirates,
Guybrush Threepwood,
Herman Toothrot and Otis,
The cannibals
The Sword Master and Meathook too,
Here on Monkey Isle!

I really loved Steve Purcell's concept art of the three Barbery Coast pirates (http://spudvisionblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/just-few-more.html). It reminds me of a picture that you might see on the wall in the back room of their barber shop. It's like a snapshot from a moment in time when they used to be pirates sailing the seas. :)
The pose Steve put the three pirates in was so much fun, I just had to colorize it and update it with their final look from The Curse of Monkey Island. :D

has this fanart thread became some sort of photoshop thread now? Because I see more photoshopped pictures than actual drawings. Oh! And good job on your drawing Guimero64!
I just think that photoshopping pictures together isn't really art. What's art is when you would put all your heart into it.

Something tells me Guybrush would know how to drive a car or ride a motorcycle if he came across either of them. He seems to know a lot about 20th Century stuff.
DJ Jack, that remix is AWESOME, fantastic job. I guess for those not into dance/electro it might hard on the ears, just give it a chance regardless.
Heh. Tell that to the rest of the internet.
Jpg is like mp3. Basically the most crappy standard you possibly can chose. But everybody uses it anyway because....everybody else uses it.
I beg to differ. MP3 has no direct implications to what _we_ as human beings are hearing. Whereas JPEG in most cases does not strike the perfect balance between quality & data size, MP3 comes close for casual use. They are definitely related, I wouldn't call them alike.
Also like 25% of the internet still uses Internet Explorer 6 which doesn't do .png properly.
I would like to add some additional information to this statement.
IE6 has no alpha channel support & in some occasions there are slight gamma issues. Other then that, there is absolutely no complications as to using PNG.

Not exactly traditional fan art, but I think it still deserves a post here:
This is a 3D edit of Steve's cover artwork. Basically, individual portions of the image were extracted and moved horizontally to simulate depth using a warp filter and layer offsets.
See the ToMI 3D thread (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11486) for information on how to view the image using the crosseye method. If you call a 3D display your own, you can just load it into a standard image pair viewer.

Every real pirate has a sword and shovel in case they need them! Much like Sam always has Max in case he needs somebody beaten up (only in Hits the Road do you find Max in your inventory).

There's some seriously good art throughout this thread. Does anyone think that adventure game fans are generally more artistic then, say... FPS fans? Can't say I've seen much in the way of cool Halo fan-art, but then again I can't say I've much looked for Halo fan art!

*shivers as well* And strangely, I consider myself an FPS fan. But not a Halo fan... In fact I'm having a bit of trouble throwing us FPS old-timers into the same kettle as the Halo crowd.
Unreal, Quake, Doom, Half-Life and to a certain extent Battlefield and Call of Duty. That's what I associate with FPS games, not that hyped-up Halo stuff.
And I think the behaviour is different for these groups as well. Back in the Quake days, when I was a happy teenager we didn't just talk about these games. We made them. We waited eagerly for the level editors and started making our own worlds. We created artwork inside the game and I dare say that this requires a certain amount of creativity as well. I don't think that group was less creative than the adventure game folks, just different. Few drawings, but a lot of great texture work and fantastic models came out of the FPS community. Not to mention awesome gameplay.
The Halo (and comparable games) crowd on the other hand seem more like the typical fanboys. It's more about feeling superior that creating something.

Definitely! Adventure games are much thinking games, and as consequence adventurers must be thinkers and probably (hopefully) creative too.
Adventure games are based on story, puzzles, good graphics and animation, music, all stuff that develops creativity. I consider I'm about 1000000% creative than if I had never seen the art of Monkey Island 2 and enjoyed its magnificent music. That's not to say that I don't like FPS, but I would hate to play just FPS!

Argggg, I just deleted my post by mistake  So, here goes again:
I agree entirely with what you say. I too grew up playing many a classic FPS, as well as adventures and other genres. I have fond memories of such greats as Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight and Half-Life.
I also spent a large portion of my youth creating custom levels. I made a quality (and big) level using Duke Nukem 3D's 'Build' engine. It's set in a futuristic shopping mall, under attack from aliens and features a supermarket, fast food joint's and an adults only area (well, I was 16 at the time) featuring a cinema (playing a dirty movie - natch), strip joint, motel, gun shop, swimming pool (with sharks of course), a travel agents and rocket ship launcher (to launch you to safety and hence finish the level).
The hardest part was creating a construction area where an earthquake was triggered when the player walked within to reach a keycard.
I also made a map of my parents old house (which is a handy thing to have for reliving old memories ) and a recreation of the cabin from the Evil Dead films. Let me know if anyone has a copy of Duke Nukem 3D and wants to play any of these levels.
Wow, I've really moved from the original point of the post! Damn you hansschmucker for bringing back such nostalgic memories ;)
I agree about Halo (hence my earlier shiver) but I would like to make it clear that if anyone on this forum is a fan of that series then that's cool and I respect you. *Just covering my ass* :p
