View Full Version : TMI - Nothing happening

Launching the shortcut ends up creating a MonkeyIsland101.exe process.... which lives for about 10 seconds then vanishes. Nothing comes up on the screen at all. No errors, no page to register the game, no game, no black screen, nothing.

Im using a 4870 1GB with the latest drivers (Which I have reinstalled) and I have also tried re-installing the game twice (On different drives no less) to no avail.

So I tried downloading and running a random Strongbad demo and that seems to have issues as well. This time at least you get the register/demo page... but when clicking to go to the demo that vanishes and nothing happens.

Im using windows vista 32-bit.

Ill prat around so more when I get home, but any ideas would be useful.

Thanks.

Hi, I`m sad that my first post here is about not getting the game to start.

I downloaded the first episode and started the Launch setup. That part worked fine. In the last window I choose the start game button, but nothing happened. Also I choose to get a button at my desktop, nothing could be seen. I didn`t worry and tried to start the game right from the installed file, but it didn`t work. Therefore I uninstalled the game, but the folder is still there and so is the content.

Second try to install the game at a different place, this time I got the link at the desktop, however the game isn`t starting.

Tried changing the resolution, nothing happenend, and the setting is at 32 Bit.

I am using a Notebook 2,2 GHz AMD Turion, with 1280 x 800, Windows Vista, a NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GS, 2 GB Memory.

Any Suggestion?

I have the same problem as Moonlight, the program appears in task manager but nothing happens... the reason the game files remained after the uninstall was that the program file was still running and therefore using the files but you just can't see it on the desktop!

Running vista 32 Home Premium, resolution 1280x800x32 using GeForce 8400M G (laptop)

I`m glad someone is expiriencing the same problems than I, though I`m kind of relieved, that the problem isn`t sitting in front of the computer.

But I`m sad for you because you can`t play.

Ok guys, couple things we can try:
Update video card drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us) and directx (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en).

After that, let's try a clean boot. You know, just in case:

To Boot Clean in Windows Vista

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. Click on OK
8. Click Restart.
9. After reboot, run game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Thanks a lot Will for your suggestions!

At the moment, I`m downloading new video card drivers. About DirectX I`m a bit confused. Shouldn`t ToMI bring the needed DirectX update?

Only to make sure, because I`m not a tech-guru: booting clean Vista is to exclude problems with the generall settings of my system?

Ive tried all of those things along with anything else I can possibly think of that might even have a small chance of getting in the way (Getting rid of ATIs CCC, closing windows processes that arent relevant, trying with user account control on and off, using compatability modes, trying lower resolutions, turning off windows firewall, redownloading the installer. Ive even taken the time to uninstall a bunch of stuff I no longer use).

And none of that worked.

Will

It should (and does) but a lot of people choose not to update it. Also, I'm not sure I've ever seen a program that gets corrupted as easily as DirectX. It's never really a bad idea to try updating it.

As for the clean boot, this is just to get rid of any weird background programs that might be affecting your system. One other thing I suggested in another thread is to try unzipping the attached file into your \My Documents\Telltale Games\Launch of the Screaming Narwhal.

Now I try clean boot. I appreciate your effort!

Oh and just to test that it wasn't something wrong with my download I installed it on the work computer and could get into the demo (not allowed to play at work so no point signing into the full game)

EDIT:
Have tried clean booting, replacing prefs (not that that should make a difference as the launcher doesn't open for TMI).

S&M opens the launcher in all instances, but the game flashes a white box on the screen then disappears with a maximum runtime of 2 seconds.

TMI appears for ~5-10 seconds in Task Manager and disappears, never displaying a launcher.

EDIT #2: To add to my frustration, my laptop (Vista x64 C2D 2.16GHz, 4GB RAM, 7400 Go!) can open Sam & Max _AND_ TMI, but doesn't have the grunt required to play them, whereas my desktop cannot.

I'm starting to wonder if the problem is actually the soundcard or something equally weird.

EDIT #3: Okay, turning on GX mode lets Sam & Max "Launch" to two splash screens (Gametap and TTG, iirc -- rebooting atm!), before crashing. TMI still won't even show the launcher. Updating the drivers with another patch (aimed to fix WC3/WOW (I don't play either so I hadn't even thought of patching it)).

My issue may be a separate one from the others; looking at the fact that my ability to launch is hinged upon sound cards, I might try disabling all audio devices and shall update this post once I've tried it.

EDIT #4: No, it requires a soundcard to play. :)

Greetings.

I just downloaded the episode, installed it, tried to play, but the game won't start up. Not that there was an error code or something, the process "moneyisland101.exe" does start, but there is no window, no game, no launcher, simply nothing.

What I tried without fixing my problem:
- game reinstalled
- directx reinstalled
- upgrade to latest graphics driver
- changing my screen resolution
- (right now) installing all the newest windows updates (including ie8)

my system config looks as follows:
- Intel Core2Duo 2x 3,00 Ghz
- 2 gig Corsair DDR2 RAM
- GeForce 8800 GT @ 1680x1050
- Windows XP SP3
- dxdiag: "nothing unusual"

long story short: "can anyone help me?" :(

One thing I think worth noting & I'm curious if others have had a similar experience. I ran into this issue with W&G3 (process creates launcher folder & data in %temp%, task manager shows process getting up to 47-52 MB, then disappears). I had no issues when W&G2 came out, now the same mysterious behavior. That, unfortunately, indicates this was likely a windows update (or some other evil auto-updater: java/adobe,etc) that took place between the release dates of W&G 2 & 3. Ideas?

Side note: After all of the actions everyone has already mentioned taking, in addition to a few others (uninstalled other SecuRom game & killing all traces, java uninstall/reinstall, IE security set to lowest possible settings, running as hidden full Vista administrator account, even cleaning out all traces of jquery 1.2.6, as the launcher is using 1.2.1), I ended up just dual booting into XP to run the game. After the last two nights determined to get this working, I'm calling it quits & dual-booting to run Monkey as well.

Yep, I've tried all these things (updating drivers, reinstalling, redownloading, clean boot) and no luck. Just downloaded my free episode of Wallace and Gromit (thanks!) and same deal: nothing visible occurs, but a process does start. You're not alone with your feelings. I was really looking forward for TMI's release. I even tried to disable every virtual cd drive, any emulation - still nothing, so it seems that it's not suckurom's fault.

Hey guys, I'm looking into possible solutions, but this is a really frustrating thing to track down. This might sound crazy, but have you tried running the game in safe mode?

aSak
07/09/2009, 12:53 pm
Hey!

What do you mean with "safe mode"? If you mean "Windows Safe Mode", then yes, it was the last thing that I tried, but it didn't help. If you mean "the game" in safe mode, then enlighten me how to do this. It's quite hard to do anything without even a game window (or launcher or whatever) popping up. :)

But still, my mood is getting better because of you. "Finally someone who cares."

// if this helps: a list of programs running on my machine. Not that it made a difference if these are running or not, but maybe the problem's hidden somewhere there:
- ASUS SixEngine (because of P5Q motherboard)
- Fritz WLAN driver software
- Logitech G15 drivers
- Razer Copperhead driver software
- Avast anti virus
- Spybot S&D
- Punkbuster services
- Daemon Tools (which I deinstalled, rebooted - no effect - reinstalled DT again)

Ditto that.

Yeah I just had a go at putting Windows in Safe Mode, no luck.

I've just noticed that when the process appears it initially seems to be active, using a certain percentage of the CPU, but that quickly drops off to zero in a few seconds. No more CPU activity, but eventually a drop in the memory the process was using happens after a few hours.

Again don't know if this is useful but I don't really have anything else to add.

Yeah, I've been mostly dealing with this issue in another thread, but we are definitely looking into why this might be happening. What's really frustrating is that one or two people have gotten it to work by just formatting their hard drive and starting over, so it's not the hardware. But that isn't exactly an ideal solution to ask people to completely erase their computer.

brimtastic
07/09/2009, 01:50 pm

That is right, formatting is actually not a solution. In fact, I'd be willing to re-setup my system completely, if I knew that everything'd be fine. As long as this is not confirmed, I'd prefer a simpler solution. ;)

Hey Will: Can we merge these threads? its difficult to keep track now...

My Problem is occuring on an ASUS laptop... but you've said hardware isn't the key...

I also have AVAST!... So I wonder if that does anything? or could this be a vista type bug... It's my wifes laptop... I can ask her if she would let me reformat it but it's a drastic solution to one problem... now if only this had been relesed on xbox I wouldn't be having these problems ;)

Ok, really stupid questions time, but do you all have plenty of space on your hard drive? Do you have multiple monitors? When the item is sitting on the taskbar, is there the possibility of right clicking on it and if so what are the available options?

skicamel

300 GB free on one drive 320 GB on another. (Comodo antivirus, by the way). Single monitor. No item shows up in the taskbar, only the process in task manager.

I DID however finally get a half-decent procmon log saved. The very first entry was the SecuRom registry key closing, so it should cover everything the launcher hit. Let me know if you want a copy. 14MB .pml file (open in procmon). 1.4 MB zipped so should be fine if you want this emailed.

Hey ski, could you send it over to warmstrong@telltalegames.com? It's certainly worth a shot. Thanks!

I just downloaded Sam and MAx s1e1 and the program starts up, so if there is any difference between these two programs?

MaGoo:
Just doing some text comparisons between the earlier launchers and the current, a number of things had changed. For a quick demonstration, open the index.html that the launcher creates (Start the launcher, Start-->Run--> type %temp% click enter. Sort by date, find the folder the launcher created...). The earlier index.html opened alone will open as a web page with a number of portions of the launcher showing. If you try to open the newer launcher (most noticeable in IE), it will continuously reload itself. Not that this has anything to do with the problem, but just a generic example that the underlying code has changed.

I gathered from another poster somewhere that another version was able to be run by bypassing the launcher. That's not possible with the version downloaded from Telltale, but I am curious if the issue isn't the launcher alone. I understand the need to update things as you go, as the hackers have always hacked the last version, so I wouldn't suggest re-implementing an earlier version, but it might be worth looking at in the short term, even if just emailing those being vocal with a workaround. I'm really curious if this would launch with no problems if the launcher wasn't a part of the process.

Ok, really stupid questions time, but do you all have plenty of space on your hard drive? Do you have multiple monitors? When the item is sitting on the taskbar, is there the possibility of right clicking on it and if so what are the available options?

My hard drive is parted in two partitions. Game partition (were ToMI is) has over 80 GB free, System partition nearly 80 GB free.

one monitor only (it`s a notebook).

No item in the task bar, but right clicking on the process gives me the options:
open path
end process
end process structure
virtualisize
make an Image
determine priority
determine membership/belonging
properties/qualities
change to service

My windows isn`t in english, therefore I translated the options, hope you could identify what they are.

One option is grey: troubleshooting/fault diagnostic.

I only have 11GB free, but from the sound of the other posters this wouldn't be the problem. Single monitor. And again, like the others, no taskbar item, just a process in the task manager.

Really stupid answers time!

- I've got ~6 GB of space left on the first partition, where I installed TomI
- around 90 GB left on an other partition (tried installing there to, but no changes)
- I only have 1 monitor (LG Flatron W2242T)
- There is no item in my task bar

Does this help?

hi my name is guybrush and i want 2 be a pirate..just kidding...
i got teh same problem, just a process which is doing nothing
ehm..
iam using a desktop pc, relatively fast (fast enough to deal with monkey island and lechuck companions), one screen, one wlan adapter, no antivir, winXP pro x64 version 2003 SP2, IE6 (but iam using firefox)

i think it could be a problem with the IE, cause in all cases there is no launcher (maybe iam wrong but in my opinion most gamelaunchers are "using" IE)

(i really know that it won't solve the problem but i will stay here and press F5 5times per minute, seriously: i don't have an idea to get rid of it)

Could this be a browser problem then? I've recently "upgraded" to IE8, but I use Firefox of course. I also have IE8 64-bit.

Well, it didn't work with IE7, then I tried the windows upgrades (including IE8) and it still doesn't work. :/

It's probably not related to IE, I would imagine that there is some specific process that is running that is causing a conflict, best thing for people to do would be to run hijack this or something else that lists your processes so we can find a common thread.

- What do you think are we doing here? I don't know if Telltale is actually working on this problem, but I hope so.

guys give them their well deserved break at the weekend!

I`m eager to play the game too, but I can see that the weeks before and after a new game are packed with work. This weekend`s us, next others though they wouldn`t get free time for a few weeks.

I really do appreciate Telltale's good support and I am willing to give them their free weekend. But... without Guybrush, my life just isn't complete.

Interesting. I dropped that into IE8, and FF. FF just dropped it due to a lack of ActiveX (expected), but the posts were borked, and from analysis they're linked to the control.

If you try to open the newer launcher (most noticeable in IE), it will continuously reload itself. Not that this has anything to do with the problem, but just a generic example that the underlying code has changed.

IE8 went into some sort of EPIC panic. It kept trying to load something unattainable. I worked out what's failing, but given my laptop and desktop run the same versions of things, I cannot work out why.

*falls over and dies with histerical laughter*

IT WORKS!!!!! I got the silly thing running... but this can't really be the solution for everyone...

I used processexplorer to have a look at what was running and I watched and the last thing it did was access a file dinput8.dll (or something like that) and anyway I searched up on that and it was directx... so I ran the dxdiag and the thing failed trying to open the panel for direct input... so I updated my sound card drivers (hadn't thought of that one before then) and also tried to install Direct X again from downloading the whole thing from MS... this time it didn't tell me there was nothing to do, it just said checking files for updates... anyway after that I restarted and tried dxdiag again, and once again the input pannel was taking for ever to load... and while it was doing that I decided to plug in my wife's Tablet to fiddle with the drawing programs while I wait and the silly thing started working... I loaded up the Monkey Island game and I got into the screen asking for my details... so I haven't played as yet, as I thought I'd let you all know my progress and if it helps any of you than that might be worth the time :)

Yes, this is weird, I got the same problem with DirectInput and I did indeed once install a graphics tablet. I do not own it anymore. But there seems to be some driver left. Uninstalling now. Will keep you informed. Could this really be...

OH MY GOODNESS! YOU MADE IT!

In spite of the last dxdiag reporting no problems, there actually was a problem checking the InputDevices. I uninstalled the drivers of the graphics tablet and there's a window! It says something like "If you already have a Telltale account..." - YES! FCUKIN YES! I never would have thought that THIS might be the problem...

Well, I dont know if the game will run without any futher problems, but this one seems solved, finally! So I say with my worst German-Australian accent: "Good job, mate!"

:)

Addendum: There seems to be a problem with non-standard input devices. Anyone encountering the same problems as we did, try the following:
- Plugging in the additional input hardware (like joysticks, gamepads, graphics tablets etc) OR
- Deinstalling and unplugging the additional devices

With only my keyboard and mouse installed, everything seems to work. :)

Sorry, I`m not such a techie and English isn`t my first language.

As far as I get it it`s something with a graphic tablet? I am using one too! And the solution is easy - just plugging in the tablet?

That is one possible solution, yes.
The other is to unplug it and delete the driver and software of the tablet.

Seems like we do have something in common. :)

If that works for others too, than you should write telltales support about your findings so they can look into it and fix it :-)

I think you already described it just fine and could send them this link to your post (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9771&page=4#80).
But let's see how it works for Moonlight. If it works he is the third one with that problem and it is unlikely coincidence.

Figure its about time for me to chime in.

I downloaded and installed the demo version on Friday night to give it a whirl before buying the game. Lo and behold it wont start. Ive been reading the discussion thus far and tried the various things out to no avail.

As for the current string, I have no non standard input devices. Ive got a mouse for my laptop, using the windows drivers and that's it. My DXDiag input window loads without issue.

Its not an absolute solution but the circumstances may yield information useful to the developers.

Maybe you should try updating the device drivers? I know that the Windows standard drivers should do their duty, but - I don't know?

Is your mouse always plugged in?
What's with the touchpad?
Ever installed a scanning device? Webcam?
Anything that might be used by DirectInput, I guess.

I bet it's something like this.

FortuneGT

Appreciate your input.

I did go ahead and try that afterward. Installed Logitech's setpoint, the touchpad utility software and even took a browse through my device manager looking for extraneous things.

This is this was a clean install of Win 7 RC and the only "device" installed is the mouse. Of course Ive picked up a lot of other programs and junk over the past months so thats not to say a reformat wouldn't help. On the very very far end of that train of though I could try uninstalling my printer and the mobile device drivers for my phone sync, but those aren't DX related and Id really rather not at this point.

I did not know that a graphics tablet is related to DirectX, so it might maybe worth a try. I'm sorry that this thread didn't help you yet, but the problem might be related to Windows 7. I mean, it's RC, right? Yes, i know that a lot of people are already using TomI with Win7, but "you know what I mean".

I'll let you know if I get another idea.

I'm glad to see that my solution helped a number of you. I wasn't able to play after I wrote that post, for 2 reasons... 1) I started it up and the graphics were choppy so I'll have to spend some time tweeking the settings, but more importantly 2) my wife complained that I was on her laptop right at that moment and had to get off... so no quench to my Monkey Island thirst :(

DX deals with input devices for whatever reason. Mice, Keyboards and tablets are all input devices. Thats about the extent of my knowledge as far as DX goes.

Ill hang tight for a bit, I will most likely buy a new computer in the coming months when Win 7 goes retail. So far though I just like the RC to much to get rid of it, and the dual boot wasn't that great. Ill be a bit more concerned when all 5 Episodes are out because then I'll be really itching to play the whole tale. Other than that Ill leave it to telltale to work on.

I went into the folder with my prefs.prop and created a file called '.lenc' (Windows Explorer probably won't let you create this file, you'll have to use a cmd prompt)

This caused the game to open and show the telltale games/lucasarts screen, but then it goes black. Oh well. it opens. That's a start.

Edit: after reading a bit, it looks like .lenc files are some sort of encrypted lua file. I updated my lua files -- but I don't see lua as a dependency in Dependency Walker. The lua engine must be built in? IDK.

I have news! Its 95% Fixed. I have located the source of the problem.

Long story short I booted in safe mode, game starts up, after a lengthy scouting process I found the culprit.

I will make a nod towards the developers and let them know:
The Process FSGK32.exe belonging to my F-Secure Technology Preview 2009 somehow prevents the launch. (Its a security suite thats W7 compatible)

I will look into sorting through this, though I do know that simply turning off the firewall and such has no effect.

I decided to drop that software and go back to my old one (now that its compatible), I will be enjoying the first episode during the coming week.

I can't even get the damn thing to launch... still. The only suspect processes that might be stopping it from working run on my laptop, and even dropping them does nothing.

Safe mode kills my sound so it throws that error... I'll give it a reboot to see if it boots in a short while...

Desktop cannot play at all... still stuck without a launcher for ToMI, and without S&M starting.

Huzzah! Great to hear so many of you got it working! Let's see if we can fix it for the rest of you guys. So, working under the assumption that it IS in fact something DirectX related for everyone, would one of you be willing to try downloading the DirectX SDK (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24a541d6-0486-4453-8641-1eee9e21b282&displaylang=en)? This is the developer's version of DirectX, so it will likely have a bunch of stuff you don't need. But since it's a full, different download, it should redownload all of the DX files, regardless of whether or not your computer thinks it needs to update them.

Sadly the solution isn`t working for me. Connected the tablet, but all the same.

Tried to uninstall ToMI and give it another try, now I have two folders with all the content. Anybody here that has got all the files after uninstalling? First one remained from first try.

I would give it a try Will, but I`m not sure if I`m the right person. I`m a technic user, not more. When you think I could handle it, I`ll do it.

Have you also tried aSak's other solution, Deinstalling and unplugging the additional devices?

I also read about corrupted setup files in this forum. You might try downloading it again after deleting the browsers cache as described here. (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=156290)

I read that, but I don`t think I use something like that. My computer is a notebook and I`m using the integrated touchpad, no additional mouse. There are a lot of devices installed here (like scanner, printer and so on) But I didn`t hear someone has problems with them.

I`ll try another download, thanks for that advice!

So, am I right that there is noone left in here who can't play ToMI at all? :)

Mines still dead. The only other input devices I have are 360 controllers, and neither plugging them in nor uninstalling the drivers made a difference.

At least the special edition of the original is out on wednesday. That'll give me my MI fix for now.

My suggestions for diagnosing the cause would be to run in safe mode and see if it starts first. My problem was not tablet/DX related and I got the launcher to finally appear in safe mode. Poking around I found one of my security software's applications was blocking it. Stopping that process/Removing the software fixed it all right up.

As for tablet/other hardware issues, you can use this (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/remove-old-drivers-after-upgrading-to-new-hardware) to show hidden/inactive devices and remove them.

Okay, folks, this is insane. I just hopped onto Steam to get the Lucasarts Monkey Island, and figured I'd give something a shot while it downloaded. I tried loading the TellTale game into Steam. Ran it from within Steam, and the launcher OPENED! Left Steam & tried the ol' ever-failing shortcut on the desktop & whaddayaknow, there's the launcher... Logged in, launched the game and all is beautiful. I've been out of town since the last time I posted (7/10?) & my computer has been off the entire time.. Absolutely nothing has changed since I last couldn't launch it. If anyone is still having the process showing in Task Manager, then disappearing after 20-ish seconds, you may want to give this a shot.

I don't know if checking your memory (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=164629&postcount=15) helps in this case, but you should give it a try.

FortuneGT

Yeah, the first step would be to find the general source of the area, be it conflicting software (try safemode), input/driver issues (DXDiag/Device Manager), or hardware issues (check memory and update drivers where possible)

BUMP!

This is getting really frustrating. Since I bought it on steam I can't install on laptop, do we get refunds at steam?

Unless I am misunderstanding your statement, you should be able to install it on the laptop (assuming it has the proper hardware specs), as one of the benefits of steam is that you can launch it on any computer with net access (and steam) with your account, then download and play any steam game you have previously purchased.

edit:
just for sh#ts and giggles, I installed TMI (from steam) on an eeePC 901 and put in a prefs.prop file set to run at 640x480 and detail level 1. Plugged the thing into the wall outlet so it wouldn't downclock itself.

After about 15 or 20 minutes of doing nothing (similar symptoms as was described in this thread: it spawns a process for TMI but does not open anything in the taskbar or show any video indicative of the game running), it finally loaded to the options screen! The taskbar icon thingy for the game finally showed up at this point. I even got the intro to start. It seemed to be running in the single-digit fps, though, based on the menu animation and the floating company logos in the intro sequence.

I accidentally alt-tabbed out of the game, and when I tried to go back, it sat there for 5 minutes doing nothing with a black screen. It already runs great on my desktop, so I didn't feel like waiting another 15 or 20 minutes to see if it would start running again (it would probably be unplayable anyways), and I just called it a day.

Now, I know that a lot of people in here have systems (especially the guy with a 4870) that are not as laughable as an eeePC 901, so I doubt this is what's going on, but perhaps for some of you with lower-end systems, if you let the thing sit for 30 minutes or so, it might actually pop something onto the screen.

Makes me wonder exactly what the game is doing in those 20 minutes before it starts. Where is the major bottleneck occurring? Trying to detect the hardware? Trying to load things into video memory? I know so little about these things that it would be pointless for me to go on.

You should not discuss the same issue in two threads. That only confuses and people will ask you the same question again that you already answered here (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10579).

If you still have not tried the memory test, do that. If we don't do that one there's not much we can do and you still can't play the game until something magical happens out of nowhere.

I had the same problem, failed to open without any messages.

What was causing this for me was an installation of Lua for Windows I had made recently (http://luaforwindows.luaforge.net/).

I uninstalled Lua and the game, re-installed the game and it worked.

I guess the game engine uses Lua and doesn't play nice with other installations.

hi everyone, ive just downloaded and installed the game myself. after the installer runs i clicked to launch the game immediately. i get into the launcher which prompts me for a username and password. after which i come to this screen:

http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/yy10/kitiara_01/tomi.jpg

how do i proceed from here? i dont see any link to launch the game...seems to me that somethings abit screwed up here...any input??

i tried later on to load directly from the MonkeyIsland101 application file instead of going through the launcher...after about 5 min of zoning in and out of blackscreening the game kind of loaded, but was very very choppy so i quit and didnt continue.

anyone know how to solve this launcher issue? im hoping if it loads through the launcher instead of the direct app that it will be smoother and not so choppy, and hence also playable.

thanks alot for suggestions or advice in advance!

ps: using windows vista + avast + bit defender + ad aware. dont know if that has to do with anything..

I'd say try updating your IE. That will likely fix the problem. If that doesn't solve it though, you can actually still click on the button even if you can't see it. Try clicking around the center of the right window.

Also, if the game is still running slowly for you, try turning your in game graphics quality down in the Settings menu.

I'm very sorry Will, but here's yet another soul who can't play Tales due to the same problem, e.g. no action and a standard Windows error message (telltale games has encountered a problem). The "funny" thing is that I was able to play episode 1 and 2 with my wacom bamboo tablet just fine this summer. Now when I try to play episode 2 again, it won't work. The only major differences to my system between now and then is an installation of Opera as my main browser and BankID (internet bank program). I've followed the thread but I'm still clueless as to what is causing the problem.

Thank you in advance!

hi will, thanks for the suggestion. tried it. but nada. zip. i updated IE7 to IE8, microsoft decided to update the OS at the same time so i probably have one of their new SPs now. anyhow, i ran the launcher again, it was wayyy worse this time. the left side that was showing the advert on TOMI with caption "the plot thickens" (see my previously posted image) is totally gone, replaced by blue sky graphic thats in the bg, the bottom rss feeders are still in disarray but now it doesnt even feed anything, it just says unable to log into community chat or something along those lines. so i clicked around the middle of the blue sky bg between the feeders and the logo, and nothing happened for quite a long time but during that time my computer was totally unresponsive. nothing worked and nothing responded to my clicks. after maybe 7 or 8 min like this, it blackscreened and gave me an error msg saying that there was a security failure due to login or something like this. and then it black screened for a long time before windows popped out an error msg saying monkeyisland101.exe has stopped responding, and it was checking for solutions. i tried to cancel that dialog, but no response. then the whole laptop just hung on me and the screen turned white. i waited like another couple min before force shutting down the computer.

any ideas what the hell is going on?? i dont understand why the game is rendering my laptop completely useless when i try to run it! (im using a toshiba protege r500 by the way, its no gaming laptop but the specs should be decent enough to run MI)

thanks again for ur help

Alright, let's try something completely different. Let's try turning EVERYTHING off:

To Boot Clean in Windows Vista

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. Click on OK
8. Click Restart.
9. After reboot, run game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Thank you!

Will
10/01/2009, 01:33 pm
Well, you can now go through and turn half of the items back on and try it again. You can just keep halving it till you know which one is the culprit. If I had to guess though, it's probably something related to virus scanner or something along those lines.

Megaloman
10/01/2009, 02:23 pm
Right, I tracked it down to F-Secure 10 services causing some problems. FSMA and/or F-Secure Anti-Virus Firewall Daemon seems to be the culprits.

Hey, just wanted to pop in and give my five.

Looking at the services helped, although it wasn't an AV service in my case (I don't have one installed at the moment, you see). I can't remember what I turned off, since I just started uninstalling programs I didn't need anymore. I do remember removing several licensing services and some Apple services related to mobile devices.

Works like a charm now.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread and say that I'm having this problem still too: The Monkey Island process starts up and gets killed within a few seconds, with no error message or application window displaying. I've already gone through the "clean" startup, cleaned temporary files, disabled DEP,, installed the latest DirectX, and made sure my drivers were updated.

The only item of interest I have is that ToMI Chapter 1 has worked before on this laptop (when it first came out and all through until Chapter 2 was downloaded), but after Chapter 2 was downloaded and installed, both chapters stopped working. I'm not sure what this would be :)

I'm running Windows 7 x86 w/ ATI 3650 Hybrid and NOD32 AV.

I'm starting wish I had read the support forum BEFORE I bought this game..

I'm having the same problem as others. Bought it, downloaded it, installed it, double clicked it, and nothing!
No error message. No black window. No buggy images. Nothing!

I've tried the various ideas that have been proposed in this forum outside of formatting my hard drive and the result has been the same. Nothing.
I'm not computer savvy so I don't know how exactly clean booting, adding a file, running through steam(No, not literally!), upgrading drivers, un-installing, re-installing, virus checking, and numerous re-booting, would have any effect I have no idea. Regardless, I did it and it's still doesn't work. Other than wasting a whole lot of life, it's made no impact whatsoever.

Now that I'm done venting, please HELP! Anybody?

My specs are as follows, in case the issue is there:
Windows Vista, CPU T9300 2.50Ghz Laptop, 4 GB RAM, 32-bit OS, GeForce 8600M GT, 200+GB space, McAfee security.

Having just completed TSoMI Special Edition, all I want to do is play this goddamn game!

Cheers.

I am having the same problem with monkey island 102. 101 worked fine (sometimes I had to disconnect the internet to get it to work), 102 nothing.

I have no problems with dxdiag, all drivers up to date, no antivirus atm (though I have done a scan to make sure its not a virus) and only one display. The only thing I can think of is my wireless keyboard and mouse but I can't disconnect them to check because I don't have anything else!

Same problem for me, with the demo. I think I've tried everything that was listed on this thread, but I still gets absolutely nothing (I can see MonkeyIsland101 process in the task manager, that disapears after 6s and 50Mo used memory, nothing else is visible on the screen, not even in the task bar).

When windows was started in safe mode, I got a black screen flash the first time I launched the game, but then it closed without any other display. I've got the same problem on another computer (a quite old laptop, I wasn't expecting the game to run fine on it, but still it is weird nothing gets displayed and the process exits without any error message...). I've downloaded the demo twice to be sure it wasn't corrupted.

My computer :
Motherboard Gigabyte P35C-DS3R
Intel core 2 duo E4400 2GHz
ATI radeon X1950 pro (catalyst v8.593.100.0, date 29/09/2009)
2Go RAM
Windows XP SP3
Internet explorer 8.0.6001
Kaspersky Antivirus (I tried to disable it but it did not help)
6Go disc space left on the partition where the game is installed
I've got a RAID partition, but the game is not installed on it
If I remember correctly I installed direct X SDK quite a long time ago, maybe with some debug libraries, but I did not ever get a problem to launch any other game. I've got visual 2008 express installed too.

I've spent a few hours trying to get it to work, but unless someone points me the problem out, I give up ; or I will spend more time trying to get the game running than to actually play it...

OK, good news, I found the problem. It seems the game uses lua, and I use lua too on both my computers (I thought about that when searching the common point between these computers). I just removed the environment variables LUA_PATH and LUA_CPATH, and everything is fine now :-). I suppose these variables are not needed by the game, so maybe you (telltale developers) should consider removing them from the lua source code, which loads them by default.

Try hitting alt-enter when you hear the sounds.

for people having problems on vista with nothing poppping up or just a monkey101.exe error when you try to run the program. The following fix worked for me.

This fix is only useful for people who don't use their PC as a tablet pc.

control panel > programs > turn windows features on and off > tablet pc optional components

this takes a while. then reboot

and hopefully you are good to go. this fixed problems with every game in the telltale game universe. I bought the whole pack with the Steam discount and now all the games work great.

for people who do use their laptop as a tablet pc... try uninstalling and reinstalling it.. I dunno. but for the rest of us laptop/desktop users this fix works.

Enjoy

Thanks alot :) , that fixed my issue.

I've removed my LUA_PATH (didn't have a CPATH defined) and I'm still unable to play any Telltale games.

Win 7 x64 Professional fresh install, GeForce 8800 GTS with latest drivers, two monitors, no antivirus (gasp!), no input devices outside mouse or keyboard, Lua for Windows IS installed (no environment variables), DXSDK and Visual Studio are NOT at the moment (it's a pretty fresh install)- if it would help, I could install them and try running with a debugger attached. Games purchased on Steam.

Observed results:
Bone, W&G, SBCG4AP, TOMI, Sam & Max: Processes appear resident for ~3 seconds before exiting with an error code of 1. No outward signs of life. Compatibility modifications (tested on S&M101) made no difference.

Telltale Texas Hold 'Em: Silent black screen (with working Steam overlay). Successfully alt+enter to a silent black window.

Diagnostics:
- Process Monitor shows a lot of this just before TOMIe1 closes:
QueryDirectory C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\tales of monkey island - chapter 1\.lenc NO SUCH FILE Filter: .lenc
- As well as this:
RegQueryValue HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMD evices\Audio\Capture\{bc5d8785-c55b-4db0-a79f-e1b036924432}\Properties\{b3f8fa53-0004-438e-9003-51a46e139bfc},2 BUFFER OVERFLOW Length: 144

In fact, it spent the better part of a second rooting around in this pattern. I have no idea why.

Also, it seems to be trying to load a texture for every possible combination of texture settings... I'm guessing that's by (bizarre) design.

Okay, same story, but on my tablet (an HP Touchsmart tx2z). I've updated every possible driver (including my Realtek audio driver, which was the problem on my desktop) and removed my Lua environment variables. No go. Situation is exactly the same (tested with SBCG4AP episodes 1 and 2 and Texas Hold 'Em). Note that it DOES get far enough to create a prefs.prop. edit: derp, let's get restarted

Maybe you guys should add some sort of error logging system? At all?

Had the same problem with my PC at work (all worked at home), nothing worked (tried ToMI, SBCG4AP, S&M). It was LUA_PATH for me too. Thanks Will & Youen.

Wow, it really was Lua.
Uninstalled Lua-for-Windows and reinstalled the games and they work.
But... I want to use Lua AND Telltale games ;_;

Have you tried just removing the LUA Environment variables?

If you need them for something else you could also try starting the episodes via batch files in which you unset the variables before you start the game.

I've got the same problem for myself, none of the launchers from Wallace and Gromit or Tales of Monkey Island are opening up. I can see them start up in the Task Manager, but then they disappear mysteriously. My other Telltale games seem to work fine however.

I've already tried updating my Direct X drivers, my video card settings are already up-to-date and I uninstalled Lua for Windows, but the launcher still doesnt appear. I really hope theres a fix, especially after seeing Sam and Max Season 3 in action, I really want to get back into Adventure games for my Spring Break...

Edit: I should mention that I'm running Windows Vista. Although I assume everyone else is running Windows 7.

Do you have a graphics tablet?
Does dxdiag show any errors in the input tab?

Nope, no graphics tablet, and no errors appear in DXdiag.

Maybe LUA_PATH and LUA_CPATH are still set?

Where would I find those? I'm actually not very familiar with Lua.

Hm, from what I can see in the Environment Variables, they dont seem to appear at all.

But the good news is, they're starting to open up again. As far as I can tell, I'm not having that problem anymore.
