Ask Your Parents Trophy

Does anyone have any idea how to get this trophy? I have played through the game twice already and this is the only trophy I am missing. Any tips/hints would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

GinnyN 05/02/2010 09:57 am

I found a list here, I hope some of those could help you.

trikster40 05/02/2010 01:43 pm

Yeah, tried everything on that list already :( I guess the only option I have is to play through again and click on EVERYTHING!

GinnyN 05/08/2010 02:44 pm

I just check another one: When you talk with the C.O.P.S., sometimes Curt will say good bye saying "End of Line" which is, I think, a reference to Tron.

Fishstick_Kitty 05/09/2010 05:56 am

I'm from the "ask your parents" era so I may be able to lend a hand with some of the references. Thanks to Ginny for posting the link :)

when talking to grandpa stinky he calls sam and max barney and harvey..... I couldn't get him to call Sam Barney. What he said to me was something like, "Have you ever hit anything with that gun of yours, Fido?"...

"Barney" (Sam) would be Barney Fife, the deputy on The Andy Griffith Show. Barney was such a bad shot he was only allowed to carry a single bullet and even then he had to keep it in his shirt pocket. The few times Barney was actually able to fire his gun outside of the holster still resulted in his intended target being missed.

In the original 1950 Harvey movie, Elwood P. Dowd (played by Jimmy Stewart) said that Harvey was a "pooka". A pooka is an imaginary friend, just like Max. ;)

And Harvey here is fine, until we reach a planet with a 'You must be this tall to invade' sign.

Looking at the screen shot, the scene is referring to the movie, Godzilla versus Mothra (1964). Mothra often did battle in Tokyo and when he/she/it died, the egg it tried to protect was left behind to hatch and carry on the butterfly-monster legacy. Max would be Godzilla and the pink creature is a Mothra during its larval stage (ergo, the need for the height requirement sign).

When you check out the ectoplasm on the table in Bosco-Tech Labs, I think there might be a Ghostbusters reference, but I could be wrong.

I'm 99% sure the Ghostbusters movie reference is right. Ectoplasm is believed to be physical evidence of a ghost or spirit so if the ghosts in the movie left slime behind, one would naturally expect Mama Bosco to ooze, too. My 1% doubt is due to the movie's release date (1984) which is 20-30 years later than the other "ask your parents" era references.

I hope this helps!

Personally I thought that was a reference to this scene from the animated series:

Ah, good point. I didn't consider the cartoons as my mind was stuck in the good ol' days. You know, when the only way to change the channel on the B&W (only) TV was to get up and walk across the room...
I still think that creature is a Mothra larva. ;)

GinnyN 05/09/2010 05:18 pm

Personally, I think Granpa Stinky is just calling Max short.

Here are the "official" lists:

Ask Your Parents

Heard 7 references no one under the age of 30 will understand.

Train station use baby carriage: "Rosemary keeps wandering off and leaving this thing behind." (Rosemary's Baby)
Train station use pile of junk: "Some secret passage. It's just a bunch of junk, like this old scanner." "Oh boy! Whose head do we explode first?" (Scanners)
Skunkape ship opening: "I can't wait to get my stinking paws on that damn dirty ape!" (Planet of the Apes)
Skunkape ship brain awakens: "Gordon's ALIVE?" (Flash Gordon)
Skunkape ship use bazooka Max: "Hey, Skunkape! Say hello to my little buddy!" (Scarface)
Bosco-Tech Labs use ectoplasm: "That must be ectoplasmic jelly, 'cause ectoplasmic jam don't shake like that!" (Glen Miller song)
Bosco-Tech Labs use wardrobe: "Don't open it, Sam! It probably leads to a fantastic land of wonder and thinly-disguised religious allegory." "Good call, Max. We already wasted enough time poking around that tollbooth." (The Chronicles of Narnia and The Phantom Tollbooth)

Don't Ask Your Parents

Heard 10 double entendres.

Devil's Toybox Cavern talk to cultists about rift generator: "I gotta turn on this machine to stop a gorilla." "Down the tunnel, first door to your right."
Penal Zone entrance: "He just wanted to rub our noses in the Penal Zone. So to speak."
Skunkape ship Bridge enter teleportation mode: "Well done, my friends. Now select a phone number that Max has memorized, to teleport himself and his furry longtime companion to that location. And also Sam."
Skunkape ship Bridge beginning of Act 4: "...The Penal Zone!" "Tee hee."
Skunkape ship Bridge re-enter in Act 4: "Did you see that, my Queen? Not only did I defeat Sam & Max, but I took care of the Penal Zone in one stroke!" "Unfortunate word choice."
Skunkape Ship Bridge use homing beacon on Skunkape: "Now we just use the remote control Momma Bosco gave us, and Skunkape gets sucked right in the Penal Zone!" "So to speak."
Meesta Pizza use cell phone on pizza boxes: "Not since we accidentally wandered into that theater on Times Square."
Talk to Max: "I don't need to go to another planet for a methane-rich environment, as long as I've got you, pal."
Pick up Jumper Cables in DeSoto: "It's simple, Sam: the RED cable goes on the RIGHT nipple, the BLACK cable clamps to the...."
Skunkape Ship Bridge talk to Superball: "Don't worry, Superball! We'll hit that gorilla where it hurts the most!" "Right in the Penal Zone!" "Yes, I get it sir."

I was trying to avoid to think about those as Double Entendres. Really.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the list ^^!

Oh! just one more thing!

Hey! I'm under 30 and I got all those references, except for Flash Gordon [heard of him plenty though] and the Glen Miller song... Talk about under-esitmating people born in the 80's, man. :D :)

And under-estimate reruns!

Those are pretty well known. I got most of the others, too, and I started kindergarten in 1994.

I really agree about the first one. The second one I got straight away, though. Max doesn't get cut off quickly enough.

Didn't get these ones when I first heard them (I thought the middle one was just a case of "And Zoidberg!"). Still don't get the last one at all, and I'm not sure I get the first one, either.

It's not like I didn't understand it. It's just, well, in the moment I though the double meaning I started to use Brain Bleach.

Better save some of that bleach for these...

"Max, the playing cards have granted you the power to thrust your consciousness into the fleshy minds of others and pluck out their innermost thoughts." The Brain

"Because when our story reaches its bowel tingling climax, only You, my friends will possess the ability to save the entire universe." Narrator

Didn't mean to imply that. I was just paying too much attention to what he was probably about to see before I realised why he said it.

Don't worry. I just was telling you what happened to me. And I always pay attention to the jokes because I brought this game for that.

It's a case of "And Zoidberg!". The problem is who is the long time furry companion, if it's not Sam. (That joke, by the way, it's used by Sam in Surfin' the Highway a couple of times, I think. I was laughing with that, not because the Joke per' se. I was laughing because somebody was using that joke with Sam instead for Max ^^UUU)

Avistew 05/14/2010 05:25 am

Yeah, I get that now, but I didn't really wonder at first. Plus by the time he said "and Sam" I had forgotten about the "furry" part so I assumed his companion was his gun or something.
Either way I didn't really think the companion had to be someone else is what I mean. I thought the joke was simply saying "and Sam". Sometimes the joke is that a sentence doesn't make sense.
I certainly didn't imagine that in the sentence "teleporting him and X", X would be part of him. It's like saying "can you hold your hand and your fingers?" I just didn't think of it as a possibility.

Plus if it's a part that's supposed to be furry... Just saying, it's more likely to be his tail >.>
