Game keeps reverting back to episode 1

Just to get this out of the way, I love this game and for me it's game of the year but recently ever time I try to play a save file I am reverted back to episode 1 and this didn't happen just once. 8 freaking time I have played through the game now the furthest I have got so far because of it is when you talk to Chuck on the train. This is only recently I have beaten episode 4 (I also have the achievement glitch.) Please can I have a fix for this I am a huge fan of the game and I have played every episode on release and I just don't have the time to beat the game another few times. I am using the xbox 360 version and I have downloaded the recent patch.

We are still ivnestigating this issue and hope to find a solution soon. Can you please give me some more detail on what you did before experiencing this issue? For instance, did this occur during gameplay, loading a save or otherwise? If after loading a save, how did you shut down the last time you played? Did you use the Pause Menu, Main Menu, or the Xbox Home button? Any detail will greatly help. Thank you.

Matt appreciate the prompt reply.

This occurred in all instances when I was starting the game up from attempting to load my last save. It breaks at the same spot, too, as described above. I always shut down pause menu > exit game.

That help?

Same Issue

I am having the same issue.. I was at the point in Chapter 3 when you come across the train blocking the way. I entered the boxcar and decided to stop playing.. I shut off my xbox by exiting the game through the start menu and closing the xbox from the dashboard.

When revisiting my game it said continue under Chapter 3.. when I clicked continue it started chapter 1..

Please help.. I do not want to lose my progress.

what a shame

i recently purchased episode 3 of the walking dead, i played through a bulk of the episode, reached an autosave and decided to finish the next day, the next day i went to start chapter 3 and the game reverted me all the way back to chapter 1 i tried getting back my progress several times until the game started chapter 3 from the beginning i decided this was better than playing whole game from the beginning so i replayed the chapter i shut it off again and the next time i started it kept reverting me back to chapter what the heck, i hate the walking dead the i find the show and the comic boring but i love this game but this glitch makes your wonderful product a waste of time effort and money if you do not fix this problem soon i will never buy or recomend another one of your works ever again.

If you have a 3rd slot on episode one copy your 1st slot into the 3rd slot it worked for me

fixthewalkingdead 11/18/2012 08:12 pm

i moved saves from slot 1 to slot 3 and the game loaded chapter 3 from the begining but now kenny is talking to me like i took the supplies even though i didnt and the stats from chapter 2 say i didnt take the supplies, i like this game, a lot but chapter 3 came out a couple of months ago and you havent addressed this problem and other issues i think it says a lot about what you think of your customers that your willing to put a faulty product on the market and offer no update, i will tell all my friends on xbl not to support you, my niece wanted back to the future, guess what you can kiss that good bye, my brother and roommate both saw this glitch today and said the game looks cool but no way would i put myself through that i wont stop until you give us the quality i know your capable of

shannonclaudin 12/11/2012 08:43 pm

A Title Update was released this past weekend that will resolve this issue.

Exactly the same place in the game and the way I turned it off, then when I next come back to play says loading last save and takes me to the beginning of episode 1!
Can't simply be coincidence can it? Please help because I don't really want to start again until the problem is fixed :'(

I'm having the same problem at this point too. I have the latest patch, which was supposed to fix the problem. When I load the save I can still see my stats from Episodes 1 and 2, and it'll let me select 'play' on 1, 2 and 3 (I haven't downloaded 4 and 5 yet) but no matter what I do, I get sent back to the start of Episode 1. It suggests to me that my save still exists but for some reason the game's not reading it correctly, or something? It's really really irritating - more than that, actually. I've been really loving the game up until now, and I don't want to have to start again if I can help it - kind of defeats the object of player choice :(

I'm playing on Xbox 360 too, by the way, if that matters. And as far as I can remember, when I quit out I went through the main menu first, which is what I generally do.

Despite Title Update, game sent me back to beginning again

I have now lost all the progress I made in Episode 2, and have been sent back to the beginning of Episode 1. :(

MattP 12/13/2012 11:59 am

When did you install the Title Update? Were you online (xbox live) or offline when this occurred? When you played Episode 2 were you online or offline?

MiamiViceCity 12/13/2012 12:09 pm

I installed the Title Update yesterday. Episode 2 worked just fine then, even when playing offline.

When I tried to continue playing Episode 2 today, it threw me back to the beginning of Episode 1 and saved over my Episode 2 progress.

I am also experiencing this issue. I have the title update, and I have pre-existing saves from the downloadable version. I copied the save onto a USB stick to experiment with.

My first attempt was to rewind to Chapter 4 of Episode 3. This reverted to episode 1.

I then deleted the save and copied the old one over again, and made copies into the 3 slots. The outcomes were:

1 - Rewind to Chapter 3, episode 3 - Reverted
2 - Start Episode 2 - Reverted
3 - Rewind to Chapter 6, Episode 4 - Reverted

So to summarize, any attempt to play the game with saves on a USB stick resulted in reverting to Episode 1. I then loaded my original saves from the hard drive (120GB) and made copies. Results:

1 - Original save, didn't try
2 - Rewind to Chapter 3, Episode 3 - Worked.
3 - Start Episode 2 - Worked.

So it seems to me your glitch is likely related to saves on USB sticks. In addition, I had no issues with performance glitches as other posters have mentioned.

Thank you for that information.

Can anyone else who is experiencing this issue let me know if you have either your profile, save, or the game (any or all episodes) installed on a USB drive. Alternatively, has anyone replaced their hard drive or is using an aftermarket hard drive (purchased on ebay, for instance) from a generic manufacturer (not an official microsoft hard drive)?

As stated above, I'm encountering the issue but I don't use USB drives at all. All of my saves - not just for TWD but for everything, including my profile - are stored on an official Xbox 360 hard drive (I believe it's 120GB, it came bundled with an Elite SKU two or three years back). It's got somewhere in the region of 50ish GB of free space. I have Episodes 1, 2 and 3 downloaded onto the drive, and I've only used one save slot. It's titled 'Episode 1' but I managed to get up to the outside of the train in Episode 3 before it reverted. I can see my stats from Episodes 1 and 2, so obviously the data must still be there but the game can't access it for some reason. It won't let me rewind into any Episode, though. I haven't touched the game since it did this, which was on Thursday. I always play with my Xbox connected to Live too, and I have the latest patch (unless there's suddenly one that's been released since Thursday, obviously!)

I really hope that the problem can be resolved, because I genuinely love the game, but I'm hesitant to play through it all again if there's the chance I'm just going to get thrown back to the start again. Thanks :)

MachoMadness 12/15/2012 07:34 pm

I've also had this issue. I suffered the game-breaking switch 9 glitch that's been detailed in other threads, and couldn't get round it no matter how much I tried, so I downloaded episode 4 and 5 and restarted my Xbox, as mentioned. The game started at Episode 1 again, and wiped out my save. I played through episodes 1 and 2 again, with no problems at all, but then as soon as I tried to play Episode 3, it reverts back to the first Episode again. Also my stats for Episode 2 seem to have been wiped, but the Episode 1 stats are still there for some reason.

Yeah, I know I posted this in the other thread too, but damn I am fuming right now. This is such a great game, which I loved, RUINED by technical issues I'd be ashamed to see on a Windows 3.1 FMV game. Plus, I've just wasted my money buying episodes I may never get to play, in an act of good faith which completely backfired on me. No wonder people pirate games so much these days.

GbHaseo 12/15/2012 11:37 pm

I'm having this exact same issue! My thread never got replied to for some reason though so I'll try here I guess. I'm playing on the digital version on Xbox 360S. I have the patch, I have deleted and redownloaded the game episodes several times. It didn't used to do this. After 2 I put off playing the game until all 5 episodes came out. Since then I've now attempted to play this 10 times now since episode 5 came out.

I play through the game normally, I've completed all the way up to the start of episode 4. However, every single time I quit the game, it reverts. I load up the game, select my save file, and I hit continue, but instead of continuing it starts me at the very beginning of the game. I have over a 190GB free on my hard drive, I've done cache deletes, everything. Are you guys doing anything to fix this issue? Because as it stands I have a game that I can't continue.

SamSlayed 12/16/2012 11:55 am

It worked for me

This is a work around not a solution. I found this by accident...My episodes were not loading correctly as so many have after playing 2 and then 1 started to load when I continued I got out and started to play something else. When I later went back to Walking Dead...it let me into 3...had the same problem with 3 when I continued it loaded 1 then just to check I got out and loaded another game (Crysis2) then went back right away to Walking Dead disc and it let me load 4 had all my choices correct...Did not play 5 yet but, plan to tonight...Don't know if this is just a fluke or what but, it worked for me and I was able to continue to play
