As far as I remember the MI games have always made funny sidenotes on the "sexual preferences" of certain characters. Though what didn't happen yet is that the game openly yelled it out.
Also it seemed those "sidenotes" were never to be taken seriously. They never seemed to be more than just a practical joke (like for example
the bra from Largo) in MI 2)
I think in ToMI people are reading way to much into (for example) the "Isle of Ewe" joke or the dialogue with the merpeople.
