This is a very legitimate complaint. BttF is certainly Telltale's worst example as far as reactions to random actions go. Tales of Monkey Island in particular was awesome when it came to one-liners based on idiotic combinations, or simply examining things repeatedly.
And I think your conclusion is spot on; it was simply a matter of time.
That said, I did enjoy the season as a whole, but I do hope that season two will feel less rushed.
