I discovered that the numbers that Hardtack and Trenchfoot guess incorrectly are reference to the Arc Numbers! Hardtack's number, 27, is a reference to the Arc Number 27 curse for music in general, due to the startling number of musicians who have died at a young age, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana, and, most recently, Amy Winehouse (R.I.P.
) It is also the arc number for "Weird Al" Yankovic, BTW. And Trenchfoot's number, 42, is a reference to what is known as the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" in Douglas Adams' 1979 novelization of the radio comedy broadcast,
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the first book in what is now the
H2G2 series.
