Unless it's possible to not kick the can and the T-Rex leaves after a bit. But i don't think there's a way to save him.
It would have been cool if the game was a bit more choose your path so that way when it comes to the scene where he's talking to Nima he decides not to join her and the game takes a slightly diffrent path from there.
