I can't imagine why Lee or anyone would have to chop a zombie into bits - surely this is unnecessary, as it's only the brain that needs destroyed? UNLESS, he's grief-stricken and chopping wildly, OR some sort of scenario like in episode two of season one, when they chop the walker up and smear themselves in its insidey-parts.

It could also be a bait and switch. It's a good technique to keep the fanbase guessing in the long run... Spoiling things that never actually happen, or don't have nearly as much significance as anticipated, or something that doesn't happen till much later than spoiled.
