The comics are easily the "best" Walking Dead lore.

I was late to the party, I watched both seasons of the show in a day and a half, then played Ep.1 of the game and then I was bummed I'd exhausted all the visual media. Then a couple weeks later at barnes and noble I picked up the first "compendium" (issues 1-48) and I had to buy it, then I read it in a week, bought the paperback volumes 9-15 to keep me going. Then I got issues 91-98 on ebay and actually went to a comic book store (felt good to support a local business) for releases of issues 99 and 100.

Moral of the story: Comic book is addictive and fucking great to read. A couple times I just had to pause and stare at a panel to take in the emotion. In the TV series (which I still enjoy) it was just "Oh well Dale is dead now, mooooooving on.

Oh wait, nevermind. I got that backwards.
The TV series is a detached story line and the events differ from those in the comic book.

The video game is supposed to stay canon with the comic books (same universe) but there are a couple discrepancies already; so for now none of the media have anything to do with each other.
