Don't get too immersed in all TWD doom and gloom. It's still a story, and a pretty good one at that, about Lee and what he lived through during a ZA. If it was about killing off people just to kill them off then the story would be one episode about some guy on riot control duty in Atlanta. Likewise it's not so much one-upsmanship on who can come up with the sickest thing to send Lee into. Rather, when you have a character who did not die right away, the longer he lives the more bad and good things he's going to encounter.

TTG picked Lee's story to tell just like Kirkman picked Rick's story to tell. Lots of drama about someone who lived a long time in a ZA (relatively speaking of course)
