Well, look at Up. It doesn't look too gimmicky and it still is telling a story while using 3D, instead of blatantly hitting you over the head with "THIS FILM HAS 3D IN IT OMG OMG OMG" like most films do.

To be fair, Coraline mostly managed to do it rather elegantly, I thought.
There were a few blunt 'popping out at you' scenes, but for the most part it just gave things a sense of depth.
