Default Big Monkey Island Contest

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Lets see you scurvy pirates, what ye got!

Inspired by the idea in this post, i thought to made waiting for first episode slightly more easier and interesting by starting the Super Ultra Mega Monkey Island Contest. Now, i thought it will be a little unfair to be only a Youtube contest, as not everyone have and know to use video tools and that sort of thing, so i thought to give it a little more optional aspect, so majority can contribute if they want in a style they choose. So, here are my ideas for a works, and of course, they are all with a theme of Monkey Island

- Monkey Island short story, novel, tale, anecdote, stage play... umm, costumes?
- Monkey Island poem, like, "There's a monkey in my pocket"
- Monkey Island video, animation, gif...
- Monkey Island music, cover, original piece of music
- Monkey Island drawing, poster, picture, comic, collage etc.

More suggestions and comments are welcome.

Now, there are already great fan artist there with a great works, so i guess if they take part with on their works they would probably take the prize.. prize?? yes, there are BIG prizes, but more about that later. Still, i thought to open the thread for fun, and if any fan artist with his piece of work want to take part in this little game, he can post also in this thread. So, works posted in this thread will be officaly in the contest. As for the judges, we'll see about that underway (Of course, I will be the main jury, and i m very easy to bribe, so PM me).

Now, the - prizes. Yes, there are prizes and they are big like Big Whoop, so if you've wanted to get rich here's your chance. There are many prizes for the best contestants, like one million pieces of eight, coupons for Planet Threepwood, one-month grog supplies and lets not reveal them all.

I thought to make the Contest until the first episode comes, so lets say until the 6th of July?

and remember - "When there's only one candidate, there's only one choice".

You should probably edit out 'novel'. I'm sure that there are people who can knock out a novel in under 3 weeks but I don't think it's fair to subject that to the reader. Enid Blyton did it and the result was kind of 'cut and paste', even though I'm sure she didn't have a PC.

I know if I ever had kids I'd never let them read any of her stuff... If only because it sucks ass.

Sailorcuteness - congratulations, you are officially the first contender. Your are currently at the first place, and the winner of big prizes

as for novel thing, yea i agree, but its for fun anyway, so it wont hurt if someone actually tries to write a fan novel in a short period of time.

i was also thinking of a modelling as an option, collage and things like that, if someone wants to do that, just name it and i will edit the list in the first post.

But Majus - in all honesty, that flash movie would have to be the greatest fan made Monkey Island related thing I've ever seen. You win. Hands down. Competition over.

...but I'm almost done my Monkey Island sonnet, so I'll put in up in two shakes of a lambs tail! Hoorah!

If you are the true creator of that amazing flash film, you deserve to win hands down. Even the voice of Guybrush agrees. I asked him what he thought of the voice acting in a youtube video of your film and he said:

His response:
Awesome. And I mean that in all sincerity.

To prove I'm not lying, though, you would need to have preordered tales of monkey island. If you have, here's the link. http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/...t=8583&page=22

By the way, Majus, you also spoiled the entire plot of SoMI for me. Oh well, I'm still getting the special addition.

Damn, sorry hplikelike, haven’t thought about that. But it’s still worth to play the game, the atmosphere is magnificent!
Thank you very very much for the kind words, and Doms comment gives me shivers (I am german, and my english is quite amateurish!).

By the way, who is the judge of this contest? It’s just for fun, right?

I'm assuming Edward VanHelgen is the judge because he started the thread. He actually wanted me to make a contest, but I declined due to the fact I've never played a MI game... yet, and I thought it would be better for someone who would get all of the inside jokes.

Sorry to get slightly off topic, but is it just me, or does every foreign English speaker underestimate their ability to speak English? Or maybe we've got such a low expectation for native English speakers to speak it right, we don't mind a few minor mishaps from foreigners?

One last off topic thing, Majus, since your from Germany, I thought you might find one other reply Dom had for a question:

And now let's come to the questions: What do you think of that voice? Would you even try to speak German (and other languages as well), record it and compare it with the localized VO only once just to see how good the other voices fit to your actual voice?
Wow! Totally different! That's kinda funny :-)

Not that it bothers me or should. The humor in character voices is based on so many subtle little cultural things -- regional dialects, speech patterns of different social classes, decades of local pop culture, etc. -- that I can't imagine how the subtlety would translate. You have to do what works for the local market, and I imagine that's why it's called localization rather than translation. Simply plugging the text into babelfish doesn't do it.
I guess what I'm saying is that I don't believe the localized versions necessarily should match my voice as closely as possible. What's important is that Guybrush's character is conveyed, not the tone of his voice. And the way to do that in X culture may be very different than the way to do that in the States.

Alright, from now on, I'm on-topic for the contest.

He quite clearly said there were spoilers-surely there was time to turn it off after realising what it was (its 5mins long and all...)

Well, as an Englishman, and one born among Yorkshiremen, I think our standard for English speakers is appalling. My sister was top of her English class when she was fourteen and she still made stupid mistakes like mixing "certain" with "curtain" etc.

Foreign countries i've been to tend to have a much better standard for languages in general, which means if they are confident enough to write English in a forum, it'll already be at a good standard.

Just compare one of my old acquaintances from Netherlands with me:
He studied: Ancient Greek, Dutch (d'uh!), German, and English. He could speak the last three fluently.
I studied: English (d'uh!), and German. The latter I spent two hours a week learning over a total of about 50 weeks.

It's not really the same, is it?

Yeah, I don't know any Monkey Island fan who hasn't already enjoyed your SoMI flash
