Default Grim Fandango NOT A SEQUAL

I was looking at some of the forums on here about Grim Fandango and how a lot of people are opposed to a sequal because the story of the first was so good. which it was!!!

However I wanted to engage the idea of having a Grim Fandango game but with a different character in the lead thus not having to back track or tread on the toes of the previous story line.

Maybe one with Glottis or something. Following this idea, what are peoples thoughts and possible story ideas?

The only way I could see it working is if they did it like the Dante series. First. Hell. Then. Purgatory. Then. Paradise. Without Tim Schafer it's impossible.

I have a few of ideas:

1. Manny and Meche arrive to the 9th underworld only to find out that it isn't all it's cracked up to be, in fact it is just a world full of many dangers. Manny and Meche must then spend their time trying to find a passage back to their previous world.

2. Manny and Meche arrive at the pearly gates. St. Peter says that for some strange reason, Manny's name is not on the list (of people allowed into heaven). Manny must go back on a mission to prove himself worthy of a place in the 9th underworld.

3. Manny discovers that Glottis is in a spot of bother or some major trouble and must return to help him.

...okay then, you come up with a better one!

It'd have to be a new character, Manny's tale is over. But you could still have other characters show up, like Glottis and the sea captain etc.

How about we all play Brutal Legend and be happy. Stop telling creators what to create.

And its not an adventure game, which is what most folks here are fans of.

Talking about adventure games >>>> playing RTS/Action/Driving hybrid games.

(Im still getting it, of course. If only to support TS)

Must...wait......another....11 hours...

GAH!

Brutal Legend is gonna be awesome. Reviews gave it 8.5~9.0, so even though it's a TS it's a hit with the mainstreamers. I'm looking forward to it, it's fun sometimes to just play something mindlessly fun, especially if it's made by Tim Schafer.

Let Tim move forward. Let him make the awesomeness.

Too many gamers want sequels. Encourage new and original IP's instead of whining about the modernization of old ones. Spin offs are no more welcome than sequels are. If it is not intended for continuation nor a series originally - they should let sleeping coffers lie.

Some of my favourite titles are stand alone: killer7, Ico, Grim Fandango, Hotel Dusk etc.

Anyway, no, I don't want to see a sequel to Grim Fandango. It feels like the original storyline was solid enough; the four-year travel (three-year, actually, but still), the enormous corruption in the land of the dead and the fate of Manny was enough for one storyline. Also, the way we didn't find out about the world thereafter, since nobody in the Netherworld knows of it.

No sequel or prequel could top it, and a spin-off would just make it stand out as a sell-out to me. : S

Ostensibly set in the same universe, but no more a sequel than, say, Mallrats is to Clerks.

Sometimes it's better to leave the classics alone. Grim Fandango wrapped up it's story perfectly, and does not need a sequel.

A lot of people here are possibly missing the point of the title, but I am not talking about a sequal. The mechanics of the game, its game play, its inginuity and its characters are all what made Grim Fandango such an amazing game. I am asking what if we keep most of it in, except Manny. Granted he is a pretty awesome character to lose, but as has already been said, his story is over.

Also people parading the idea the sequals and spin-offs are rubbish to the originals is rubbish itself. Fraser was better (arguably by some) and ran for longer than Cheers. But both we're great shows.

Story and character are the two things that make a good piece of entertainment, CGI a close third. So long as they can make a good story and have some good characters, a sequal or spin-off to grim fandango, I don't think, would be detrimental to the reputation of the original.

Maybe because it is spelt "sequel"?

Sorry, very pedantic.

Pronounce it with me.
"We will QUELL the rebellion!"
NOT
"We will QUALL the rebellion!"

If there were a sequel, the only way I'd support it is with the removal of Manny. That said, I'm not sure if things can/should be pulled off in the same way. Maybe a spiritual sequel, but reusing the world seems a bit wasteful.

I didn't say spin-offs in general. Comparing Grim Fandango to Cheers is like comparing Titanic to Simpsons, or something.

I'm usually open to this kind of thing, but GF is not as light-hearted as other games.
Generally, though, I'd want new IP's over anything else.

I can see a Grim Fandango sequel, but not with Manny. I wrote down a bunch of ideas for another story that takes place in the same universe.

Well...I could see it with Manny too, but it'd be very hard to pull off.

Actually, the ending of Shadow of the Colossus sets-up Ico, but Ico takes place around a thousand years later. And you can see the castle in Shadow (when running up on the platform to Colossus 3, stop and look around after you jump out of the water).
