Question Bob the skeleton's portrayal in SE

I really like the way they portrayed Bob the skeleton in the Special Edition. He looked a bit less menacing and a way more "minion" type of guy, always afraid of the Big Boss and somewhat silly.

I don't know whether it was voluntary of not, but they really got to me with this Bob, because I've always thought that in the original SMI he was kinda unclear in his role, like, he sounded afraid of Guybrush with the root beer, but at the same time menacing anyway. Here they got him begging for mercy, which to me is just a perfect portrayal of some small jerk getting what he deserves.

What do you think?

I dunno, his role always seemed clear to me. He even says to LeChuck that he was not given the option of becoming part of his crew, and it was clear from only the original text he was being sarcastic when he said he was lucky.

Plus, I thought the visual redesign almost ADDED some menace to poor Bob. Only the voice toned that side down for me.

He was one of the few characters whose sprite is a lot better in the Special Edition than the original IMO. The voice is also great.

Yeah, his voice is great in that it's so harmless and obedient, it becomes funny. But I think he also kinda looks a little sillier in SE than he did in the original.

I didn't notice much difference between old and new portrayal, although I always imagined that his voice would be bit different.

Another thing: I find Bob somewhat analogue to Dinghy Dog in CMI: he's sort of not really evil, he's just pathetic.

And I think he always had the option of dying, he just took the easiest way out and surrendered himself to LeChuck. Thought that undeath would end his wussiness... Thought wrong.

It probably didn't hurt that he was voiced by none other than Rob Paulsen!

You may know him better as Raphael from the 80's TMNT or Pinky from Pinky and the Brain.

I really liked Herman Toothrot's new sprite as well.

Heman looked a tad too short to me. Comparing to his buddy the hanging corpse there, he was at least 1/3 shorter.

And Guybrush was taller than usual in SE, which contrasted them both.

You know what's funny is I found an ad for Secret of Monkey Island today in an old gaming magazine that specifically described Guybrush as short. Maybe they meant short as in short on money? Then again, they also use the word broke so it'd be redundant.

And if we look at the Curse of Monkey Island manual, it actually shows past Guybrush design and question "Why is Guybrush soo much taller in this game!?" I believe that was never answered.

Of course it was: because he was drawn by Purcell, and inserted in game as such, for them developers being too lazy to draw their own models. And if you look to this compared to what we all saw in EMI, I can only say that Purcell was the (only) right choice there.
