Well, it's a laptop and I don't know how to install the new keyboard.
Also, French-speaking people in Canada don't use an AZERTY keyboard but a Canadian QWERTY. I have one of those for my desktop, but part of me feels like it would be betraying my country to get one on my laptop

Meh, next laptop I buy in a few years will probably be Canadian. In the meantime this one works adequately. I can still type on the missing keys, it works just fine as long as I aim for the round bit.

Hm. Depends a lot on a variety of things about your computer model. Of course you could always plug in a USB AZERTY keyboard, but that would be a bit clunky, wouldn't it? Maybe there is a computer repair shop that could do the job?

Most keyboards have keys that can be easily pried off and rearranged! For example, proponents of the Dvorak keyboard layout will convert their QWERTY keyboards that way.

Remember is an understatement. I remember it, play it, use the wallpapers, I'm painting actual fan art, and in fact, to get the game to run on Windows 7 64 bit, I have just recently bought the game again (from gog.com, without the DRM, because that's what keeps the original retail release from working on my new computer). And all that without really considering myself to still be much of a gamer...

I find it interesting that several people here refused to resize their screenshots to fit properly in a forum post.

Here's my laptop. I regularly clean the desktop of stuff since, when I download files, I usually save them to my desktop for easy access at first.

For anyone who cares:
- the "Movies" icon links to .mkv rips I'm making of my DVD movies (so I can watch movies on the go without the need for discs)
- the "Play DVD Movie" icon uses MPC to play DVDs, but tells it to open at Title 1 Chapter 1 (to hopefully bypass menus and trailers)
- I use IE and Firefox at the same time when I'm doing something (eg. watching streaming videos) that I don't want to lag my concurrent web browsing.
- yes, I do play RuneScape. My wife and I started playing it in college, and I know more than one rl friend who is much more serious (practically no-life) about it than we are, and I have 99 Runecrafting.
- and finally, this is XP, not Vista or 7. I used a skin (bricopack) called Vista Inspirat that merely replaced the system files that xp uses to display menus and icons, such that it looks like Vista/7 but is not and uses zero memory in doing so. I hate memory hogs like WindowBlinds.

I use it from my bed. I already have a mouse because the touchpad stopped working a while back, and use the mouse on the computer directly, because my whole work area is the computer itself. Unless I can fit an external keyboard over my existing keyboard without it hiding the screen from me or preventing me from moving my mouse freely, it's not going to be practical.

Yeah, that's what I was told. So I pried the all off to clean under my keyboard, and there are some I could never put back. It's been over a year now.
Also, some I put back in the wrong place (just "Inser/Pause" and "Imp écr/Syst" though so it's not much of a problem).

Some also regularly pop out and have to be put back into place, notably my N key.
I wish I hadn't believed people who told me they can be "easily pried off and put back into place", I'd still have a full working keyboard -_-'

desktop keyboards have easily replaceable keys. not sure about a laptop keyboard since it's custom made and integrated into the machine, as well as the keys are so thin.

sounds like you need a new computer. or two. as I recall, you said that your desktop pc is almost as old as dirt.

Easily prying off keys is somewhat less common in laptop keyboards, in my experience. For example, my keyboard(while being an absolute pleasure to type on) does not have keys that can be taken off. When one got snapped off, I had to contact my computers' manufacturer and have them replace the whole mouse/keyboard "slot" in the computer(not sure how to describe it adequately or technically).

Meh, it works fine, just doesn't look good. The desktop one we bought especially to play Tales because the laptop has Linux so we couldn't run it. We upgraded it for the Devil's Playhouse because it couldn't play it, and now it can, so we really don't need a new one either.

Aw, that's too bad. It has worked great on all the desktop keyboards and laptop computers I've owned; unfortunately a sample size of ~8 may not be statistically significant... so the statement in my original post may have been overly optimistic. "Assume makes an ass of u and me" etc.

Fortunately I said "most keyboards", not "all"... so my statement has yet to be proven outright false

My work computer's background is something really boring, but this is the background of my laptop:

I think people should just be careful about things like "easy". I guess it's not rocket science, I removed all keys and could put back like 90% of them. But it's not as easy as I thought it would be from hearing about it, there is a room for error, and if you can't put a key back, well what do you do?

e; caught up in the thread- If you try to clean your keyboard, and it breaks, you can buy a new one. USB keyboards are like $10 or less, or if you don't want to be so distant from your laptop, Netbooks are pretty amazing and incredibly cheap.

And if you run into trouble, find the neighborhood high school nerdy kid and toss him a couple bucks to fix whatever is broken

It's easy for me, so that means it's easy for everybody, right?

...right?

Yeah, I may sometimes forget that not everyone is a techie who takes electronics apart for fun.

After the ad break, I'll show you how to easily overclock the CPU in your network-attached storage device, for fun and profit! Stay tuned, kids... and start warming up those soldering irons!

Add me to the list of people who abuse their poor laptops... I've lost count of the number of times I've tossed mine into hold baggage for a long-haul flight. It's five years old, the case is dented and cracking a bit, the spacebar keeps falling off, but on the whole it's in surprisingly good condition and just keeps chugging along. I'd like to get a new one, but really can't justify it when this one is still perfectly functional.

It takes a computer geek of the purest form to suggest buying a netbook to replace a broken keyboard.

EDIT: Of course I mean that in the best possible way.

I'm guilty of things like that myself, but it's nowhere near as bad as my friend Jeff. If somebody asks him for advice on a new video card or processor (or even just a hard drive), he will spec out five or six full PC builds on NewEgg for them.

I think us computer geeks are the only branch of hobbyists that can't sleep well until our entire town/city/state/internet community has the latest and greatest hardware, haha.
