Spoilers! Added trivia to ToMI Chapter 4 in the Monkey Island Wiki

I suppose you may know that I added some trivia to Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 4: The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood in the Monkey Island Wiki. Here's the trivia that I put in:

Quote:
When Guybrush talks to Stan during his evidence gathering to prove his innocence, when he asks Stan how the sales are going, Stan replies that "Celebrity merchandise is always a good investment," and that "NOTHING sells like dead celebrities," which is a reference to several actors, singers and other celebrities who died in the summer of 2009, while LucasArts and Telltale Games were still working on Tales of Monkey Island from "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal" up to Chapter 4. Guybrush responds with, "Yeah, well, I don't plan on dying today," which is a bitter irony, since it foreshadows his own unexpected death at the hands of LeChuck at the end of the chapter.
Speaking of dead celebrities, don't you think it's kind of bizarre that so many celebrities had died in the summer of 2009 and been made fun of in the South Park episode "Dead Celebrities"? Here's the link on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Celebrities

So what's your opinion on my update?

You dont really create a thread about trivia you post on a website. I was the one who told the hrwiki about poker night, and Im not saying anything about it.

Although it has been strange how many celebratys have died recently.

Sorry about that. Anyway, I wonder if Guybrush's unexpected death at the hands of LeChuck is a parody of how so many celebrities died unexpecedly.

I like how people jsut invent random connections and make it official trivia.

Where is there ANY proof that those lines have anything to do with the celebs who died that summer?
Celebs die year round every year.

Well, I've got proof right here, and it's in the link for Entertainment Weekly's October 2, 2009 article, "Mourning in America" (#1068 ):

That's not proof at all. He wasn't doubting that the celebrities died, only that those lines had any connection to the deaths which I also doubt. There is no reason for us to think Stan said that in reference to anything.

What about the way that Michael Jackson sold a lot of hits since his death? That's not a connection, right?

Hi Debbie,

Since you ask, it's not a connection, actually. It is a correlation. Correlation does not necessarily imply causation. (Google the phrase "cum hoc, ergo propter hoc," if you want to learn more about the formal logic of this fallacy.) In this case, companies making money off of dead celebrities isn't at all specific to the year 2009 -- it's a well-worn truism that goes back many decades. A "universal truth," if you will. So in the context of Stan's dialogue, there is no need to appeal to specific years and/or celebrities. It would be like me making a general joke about corrupt politicians, and you assuming that I was referring to Rod Blagojevich. Sure ... MAYBE I was thinking of Blago when I made the joke ... but I didn't need to have been. You would require evidence to make a claim that was that specific.

I don't mean the tone of this to be hectoring or rude. You're enthusiastic about these games, and in participating in the community, and that's great! I'm also guessing (this is just a guess) that you're young -- perhaps in your teens? Either that, or you've carried into adulthood that youthful spirit that constantly seeks connections as you process and organize information. In any case, seeking connections is terrific; just remember that it's easy to get carried away ... and trust me, I know whereof I speak!

Thanks, Admonisher. And I am already an adult, yet still have the kid in me. Sorry I was a little carried away.
