well there are 3 hats and the cheapest is under 8$. Nobody forces you to spend 100$ on a (imho really ugly) in-game-item.

Yeah there is an $8 hat, a $20 hat and then the $100 hat.
I probably will eventually get the $8 because I do feel guilty not doing something about the earthquake.

I joined the TF2 ranks again a few weeks ago, just in time for the new conspiracies, heh.
The Potato Hat is awesome (loved the science joke), totally want it for sentimental values haha reminds me of the times I did all those kind of experiments in school and my favourites were the potatos or lemons power generators. Also I want to join the potato hat portal 2 conspiracy madness... I'm kinda sad I can't get it

I don't want to buy the Potato Sack deal since I already own 2 of those games (Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy) and as always they are ripping us (europeans) off with higher prices.

It looks like Potato sack owners get yet another item: the companion cube pin under a different name.

I liked what they did with the Rift and Shogun items and give out Genuine versions to those who order and unique ones to the store and drop system. I don't know why the Homefront hat doesn't, maybe because it wasn't released in the UK? I hope the potato hat gets a unique version.

I know Valve likes their store and their in-game economy but I am a little frustrated with their monthly promos. I enjoy collecting hats but I would rather see TF2 promote a game by giving everyone that hat to raise awareness of the game. (I had barely heard of Rift when the crossover was announced.)

I just want every hat/item without using a micro transaction store. Then I wouldn't have the headache of trading for things.

I would buy the potato sack if I didn't already own 4 of the games. Also, sadly, I'm a bit of an achievement whore and some games like Super Meat Boy, Audio Surf, and Bit.Trip have some ridiculous ones. I've enjoyed them more when playing on a friend's account anyway.

This is why TF2 continues to get free updates. It's become Valve's ultimate tool for artificially boosting sales of other games while still turning a profit of its own via microtransaction.

Of course, there's also people like me, who were completely driven away from the game by this shit. I totally lost interest in Gaia Online for the same reason. Well, that and that it's filled with whiny 14 year olds, but you get the picture.

I don't see much of a problem with updating with free stuff. Most of it is receivable through crafting or trading, and a lot of the stuff looks very nice.

It's not the free stuff that's the problem. It's the pushing to "buy buy buy!". If not for that, I doubt the free stuff would still be possible.

Valve didn't have an online store until the Mannconomy Update in October 2010 (September 30th, actually, but less than 6 hours before October began). They had both promo items and hats available before that... the Sam and Max set being one obvious example.

However, they've been doing way more promo items as of late.

Misc items only have unusual versions if they were a hat that got converted into a Misc, and only then if it was after the Mannconomy update.

That's why you have unusual versions of the Le Party Phantom and Blighted Beak, but not of the Whiskered Gentleman or Camera Beard.

8 new hats and 3 new misc items were added to the game. 2 Engineer hats, 2 Engineer Misc items, 1 Pyro Misc item, 2 Medic hats, 1 Soldier hat, and 1 Demoman hat, and 2 Spy hats.
